Princeton’s nightmare begins On Friday and Saturday nights, starting Oct. 9 and running through Oct. 31, and now including Sundays on Oct. 18 and 25, the Bureau County Fairgrounds is once again hosting Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road.

From 7 to 9:30 p.m. when the last ticket is sold, the event will include an opportunity to venture deep into the belly of a sunken pirate ship, interaction with live actors, animated props, sensory deprivation, hayrack rides, a bonfire and the Mummies Eatery.

Admission is $10 per person. If you’re in a hurry, a Speed Pass is $12 and will allow you to go to the front of the line.

The fairgrounds are located at 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton.

PERU — The Friends of the Peru Public Library recently donated funds to support the library.

Charm Ruhnke, director, said, “The Friends have always been generous to the library and this year is no exception. We have wanted a case for displaying larger items from our artifact collection and items from area collectors and artists, the Friends made the purchase possible.”

In addition to annually sponsoring the library’s coffee bar, the Friends help support the library’s various adult, teen and children’s programs. This year the Friends also bought the library a counter-style display case for exhibits and storage cabinets for the meeting room.

Ruhnke said, “The cabinets are counter height, doubling as a buffet for the various groups and programs hosted in the meeting room. We have the best

On Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m., the library hosts Rocket Readers! Kids play games, listen to stories and participate in other activities designed to encourage kids to love reading. There is no charge for the program.

SHEFFIELD — Sunday, Oct. 18, the Sheffield Public Library will host its annual soup supper at the Sheffield Community Center. Serving will be from 3 to 6 p.m. This year all of the restaurants in Sheffield will contribute to the fundraiser by preparing one of their specialty soups.

In addition, a variety of other soups will be made by the library board trustees and librarians including tomato, chicken noodle, broccoli-cheese, chili and sausage/ corn chowder. The cost of the supper which includes up to two bowls of soup, bread, crackers, dessert and drink will be $6.50 for adults.

This year, there will be a kid’s menu including a hot dog, chips, caramel corn and drink for $3. The kids will also receive a complimentary “goody bag” including some fun Halloween prizes and treats.

Door prizes will be given out each half hour throughout the event.

How about a nice salad as your complete meal instead of standing over a hot stove? Make up some fresh bread or biscuits to go along with your salads.

Spinach Salad with Warm Bacon Dressing 5 slices bacon, roughly chopped 1/4 cup white wine vinegar 1 teaspoon sugar or honey 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil 1 pound spinach (not baby), tough stems removed 2 cups seedless red grapes, halved 4 ounces blue cheese, crumbled (about 3/4 cup) Croutons for topping Cook the bacon in a medium skillet over medium heat, stirring occasionally until crisp, 9 to 11 minutes. Remove to paper towels to drain. Remove the drippings in the skillet. Whisk the vinegar, sugar, mustard and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper into the drippings. Slowly whisk in the olive oil until emulsified. Place the spinach in a large bowl and pour the warm dressing on top, add the grapes, blue cheese and the reserved bacon and toss. Season with salt and pepper. Top with croutons.

Walli’s Noodle Salad 8 ounces medium noodles 2 cups chopped unpeeled apples 1 cup grated carrot 1/2 cup chopped sweet pickles, not sweet pickle relish 2 eggs, hard cooked, peeled and chopped 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion 1 cup mayonnaise or salad dressing 1/2 cup dairy sour cream 1/2 teaspoon salt Sweet pickle slices Cook noodles according to package directions; drain, rinse with cold water.

In a bowl, combine noodles, apples, carrot, sweet pickles, eggs and onion.

For dressing, stir together the mayonnaise or salad dressing, sour cream and salt. Add to the noodle mixture and toss to coat. Chill for 2 to 4 hours.

If necessary stir in some milk to make desired consistency. Serve in a bowl or on a platter. Garnish with sweet pickle slices. Serves 12 to 16.

Steak with Ranch Potato Salad 1 pound red potatoes, cut into 1-inch cubes Kosher salt 2 stalks celery, chopped 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 1/3 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 teaspoon paprika 3 tablespoons chopped fresh chives 1 1/2 pounds flank steak, trimmed of excess fat 1 bunch watercress, tough stems removed Put the potatoes in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water seasoned with salt. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, about 15 minutes.

Drain and rinse under cold water to cool, then transfer to a large bowl and add the celery. Meanwhile, whisk the mayonnaise, mustard, olive oil, buttermilk, Worcestershire sauce, paprika and chives in a large bowl. Brush 3 tablespoons of the dressing all over the steak. Toss 1/2 cup of the dressing with

the potatoes and celery, set aside the remaining dressing. Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon evenly in a large cast iron skillet and heat over high heat until very hot, 5 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium high, flip the steak and sear until well browned on the other side, 4 to 5 more minutes for medium rare. Remove to a cutting board and let rest 5 minutes.

Then thinly slice against the grain.

Toss the watercress with the remaining dressing. Serve with the steak and potatoes.

Tex Mex Wagon Wheel Salad 3/4 cup bottled Italian salad dressing 2 tablespoons plus 1 teaspoon fajita seasoning from 1.57-ounce envelope 1 teaspoon hot sauce 1 pound boneless beef sirloin steak, about 1 1/2 inches thick 8 ounces wagon wheel pasta 1 16-ounce can kidney beans, rinsed and drained 1/2 cup drained sliced black olives 1/2 cup Mexican shredded cheese, blend Tortilla chips, salsa, sour cream and guacamole In large plastic food storage bag, combine 1/4 cup salad dressing, 2 tablespoons seasoning and hot sauce.

Add steak, seal and turn over several times to coat. Let stand at room temperature 1 hour. Meanwhile, cook pasta according to package directions, rinse under cold water. Drain and pat dry. Position broiler rack so that top of steak on rack in pan will be 4 inches from heat source. Preheat broiler.

Line broiler pan with foil, top with rack. Remove steak from marinade, pat steak dry with paper towels. Place steak on rack in pan. Broil, turning once, about 5 minutes per side from medium rare. Let meat rest 5 minutes before cutting into thin slices. Combine remaining salad dressing and 1 teaspoon seasoning. Add pasta, steak, beans, olives and cheese. Toss until combined. Serve with chips, salsa, sour cream and guacamole.

Brewmaster is ready for customers, old and new alike Honoring nostalgia with an amped up style and menu

PUTNAM — After decades of serving the residents of Putnam and Bureau counties, the establishment on Route 29, known by most as Brewmaster, has become something of an institution. It recently reopened under new manager and chef, Jacqueline Tierney. While there will be many recognizable features to both the building and the menu, much has changed.

Among other things, a wall has been removed; new flooring has been installed throughout; and the kitchen was completely renovated. The original, copper-topped bar was retained, but it was treated to extensive polishing in order to restore the original luster. It was also extended and the bar stools were reupholstered in their original style and material by the shop which did them originally.

“People have been taken aback when they walk in. Everything is up to code,;we didn’t want to be grandfathered in.

There was so much to be done. We didn’t want to put another Band-aid on another Band-aid, so we started from scratch and gutted everything,” said Tierney.

Tierney has long standing ties to both Brewmaster and Putnam County.

She spent her childhood summers at Lake Thunderbird with her grandparents, and they’d frequently

“They used to have penny slot machines at the tables. I was 5 years old and playing for root beer and free cigarettes. It was a different time,” said Tierney.

Tierney has consistently been a part of the culinary world since she was 16. She began in high school by working in extracurricular programs and placed in national cooking competitions. After high school she received training from a French-trained chef and is now bringing her expertise back to Brewmaster.

“It’s beyond bar food.

I hand cut all my steaks every day, and the burgers are all certified Angus.

All my sauces are from scratch, and nothing is just pulled out of the freezer and dropped; it’s all fresh.

We’ve also had homemade soups, fresh baked cookies and homemade ice cream sandwiches,” said Tierney.

There are also new weekly features, as well as some old favorites returning to the menu.

“They used to do a whole catfish, blackened or fried, and I brought it back. Two of my best sellers are the Thanksgiving sandwich and the pork tenderloin sandwich, but it’s not your typical tenderloin though.

Our shrimp linguine in a butter white wine sauce went over really well. I might bring that one back, I was shocked at how well it did. I was trained in French cuisine, so that’s what I’m used to. Butter, garlic and wine, those are the three main ingredients in French cuisine,” said Tierney.

Those who love brunch will be pleased to read that Tierney is considering starting a menu style Sunday brunch.

SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley Walleye Club will have its 21st Members Only fishing tournament Saturday, Nov. 28. It starts at Barto Landing, There is an $80 entry fee before Nov. 16 and $160 after. First prize will be $750, second $350, and third will be $250. After the weigh-in, there will be free food and drinks.

Rules and regulations for the event are: Both partners must have 2015 membership paid by deadline of noon Nov. 1.

All boats must leave from and return to Barto Landing.

Five fish limit per team.

Fourteen-inch (14”) minimum length.

No dead fish will be weighed.

Scale house will open at noon.

Fishing time will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

PRINCETON — Princeton Tiger Volleyball Club will have the first practice and informational meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 18. PTVBC is a small club focusing on learning growth through repetition.

Practices will be at Logan Junior High School on Wednesdays ranging from 6 to 9:30 p.m. depending on the team. We will host 14U, 16U, 18U teams. We are a first come, not a tryout club; the first 12 to enter are taken.

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball coach Chris Herman and his players will host a fall instructional league for boys from third through eighth grade from noon to 2 p.m. continuing Oct. 17 and 31.

Emphasis will be placed on individual and team defense and offense, shooting, ball handling and league play. Participants will interact with Herman, assistant coach Justin Jacobson and members

Halloween Hustle 5K

LADD — The Halloween Hustle 5K will be Saturday, Oct. 24, at Ladd School. The race will start at 9 a.m. Packet pick-up and registration will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

Fee is $20 if registered by Oct.16, and $25 for ages 14 and up. Entry fee is $10 for ages 13 and under.

Donations are accepted. All proceeds to benefit the students of Ladd CCSD No. 94.

Canal Connection

UTICA — The Canal Connection 10K will be Sunday, Nov. 1, starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration will take place at Waltham School in Utica starting at 8 a.m. and end at 10 a.m. All runners must register in Utica.

Busses will begin to leave Utica at 8:30 a.m. to transport runners to the starting line at L-P High School near the west end of the I-M Canal Towpath. A bag will be provided with your race packet in which you may secure all possessions for transport back to the finish line.

The 10K is race No. 19 on the Starved Rock Runners Circuit. The course features a downhill slope for the first .75 mile stretch. Runners will then enter the I-M Canal Towpath and run the next 4.2 miles on a flat, unpaved surface featuring rock formations and autumn scenery. The race will finish on a paved street near the Waltham School.

Pre-registration by mail through Oct. 27 is $25 and $32 after. Online registration is available at www.runrace.net and www.starvedrockrunners.org.
