Prepare yourself for some frightful fun!

It’s that time of year when we allow ourselves to be scared silly. With Halloween just a few weeks away, you’ll want to mark your calendars to attend orchards, pumpkin patches and of course ... a haunted house or two.

When it comes to the fun of haunted houses and other scary endeavors, it’s difficult to beat the ghoulish fun you’ll be able to have at the annual Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road, held at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. Proceeds from this annual fundraiser go toward funding upcoming events at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, including the annual fair in August.

Event-goers can plan to be scared silly at this event. The Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road is open Friday and Saturdays — Oct. 14, 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29. A single Sunday is also on the agenda — Oct. 23. From 7 to 9:30 p.m., you’ll find a good share of scare, plus a host of other activities including refreshments, a bonfire and more.

The admission is $10, or if you don’t want to wait in line, you can buy a speed pass for $12 and head straight to the front of the line.

Be prepared for a full evening of fun and entertainment. If you like haunted entities to help you celebrate Halloween, this is one you won’t want to miss.

Seeking greener pastures Walnut Public Library wants to develop outdoor reading area

WALNUT — Walnut Public Library wants to give its patrons another place to enjoy the written word — a green space behind the library.

Library Director Michele McAlvey would like to turn the unused parking space behind the library into a green space, which could be used for reading or a number of other things, such as a picnic spot.

“We are looking to turn an unused, weed-infested, eyesore space into a lush green space people will want to come to sit and read for a while, take a rest while out walking in a pleasant quiet space,” she said. “We would have some story hours outside, and maybe even a few summer evenings where we could show some movies.

The ideas we have are numerous.”

The library is working with Elite Landscape from Princeton, and it has been decided the library should work on the project over a multi-phase, multi-year stretch.

“Phase 1 would handle a drain issue with rain water run-off. We need to landscape the area behind the block retaining wall facing Main Street. The cost for this alone will be around $2,000. We have already received $250 towards our green space and would like to ask our village residents if they would like to help financially towards our goal,” McAlvey said.

“Much of Phase 2 will be more labor intensive, as we need to haul old rocks and dirt out of the area, and lay down fresh dirt to plant some lush green grass,” she said. “This is planned for the spring of 2017. Once the grass has been established, Phase 3 plans include seating, a picnic table, container gardens with flowers, a tree or two, maybe some vegetable plantings. When we get to this stage, I am hoping to talk with BVHS (Bureau Valley High School) for help with the designing of the seating and container gardens.”

The project will require volunteer workers, board members and library staff to lend a helping hand to make the green space a reality. The library does not yet have a total estimated cost for the entire project — only an estimate for Phase 1.

Ideas for the green space are featured on a board inside the library, for patrons who would like to see the plans. Anyone interested in helping financially should speak with a library board member or call the library at 815-379-2159.

Yaklich works toward Eagle Scout status

Scout tackles sign improvements at the Prouty Building

PRINCETON — The Princeton Chamber of Commerce and Bureau County Red Cross have a new sign outside the Prouty Building, thanks to a local Boy Scout eager to receive his Eagle Scout status.

Mark Yaklich, 16, a member of Princeton Boy Scouts Troop 1063, went to Princeton Chamber Director Kim Frey and asked for ideas for a project that could benefit his hometown.

When she pointed him in the direction of the dilapidated and outdated signage for the Chamber and Red Cross out front of the Prouty building, he knew it was an area where he could make improvements.

Yaklich said the former sign was too small and couldn’t be seen from the road because of the over-

grown bushes growing in front of the building.

With ideas on how he could make improvements, Yaklich raised $1,800 in donations from people and businesses and worked with Ken Stoner of Stoner Signs in coming up with a new design for the sign. Yaklich said when it came to the design, a big thing for the Chamber was getting its new logo put on the sign.

On Sept 17, Yaklich, along with nine fellow scouts, spent 10 hours completing the project.

Princeton Commissioner Ray Mabry volunteered his services, and Al Taylor from Elite Landscape assisted with laying out the new landscaping.

At the Sept. 19 city council meeting, Yaklich was recognized by Princeton Mayor Joel Quiram who pointed out the improvements out front of the Prouty Building

Eagle Scout is the highest achievement or rank attainable for Boy Scouts.

Only about 5 percent of Boy Scouts are granted this rank after a lengthy review process. The requirements necessary to make Eagle take years to fulfill.

Requirements include earning at least 21 merit badges and completion of an extensive service projects the scout plans, organizes, leads and manages.

With only two badges left to earn, Yaklich is hoping to earn his Eagle Scout honor by the end of the year. He said it’s important to him as he looks toward the future.

He said many scouts who earn the honor are set apart from others when applying to colleges.

Bureau County Retired Teachers will meet on Oct. 20 PRINCETON — Harlan Ehmen, president of the Bureau County Retired Teachers’ Association (BCRTA), invites all retired teachers living in Bureau County to attend the second fall meeting of the BCRTA at noon Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Princeton Public Library.

WYANET — The library’s 2nd Thursday@the Library will be on Thursday, Oct. 13, at 6:30 p.m., with Wyanet’s own Whitney Warkins and “How to Create a Chemical Free Home Environment for you and your Family.” As a health coach, Warkins has come to realize the issues related to chemical use inside and outside of homes.

She will tell the audience how to be healthier and cleaner by “ditching and switching” the chemicals. As always, refreshments will be available after the program.

OHIO — Wednesday, Oct. 19, 5:30 p.m., the library will host a class on Windows 10. Interested individuals should stop by the library to let the librarian know they are interested in attending.

SHEFFIELD — Sunday, Oct. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., the library will host its annual soup supper at the Sheffield Community Center.

This year all of the restaurants in Sheffield will contribute to the fundraiser by preparing one of their specialty soups.

Chef Monika Sudakov from the Chestnut Street Inn will be making squash soup; Z Best chef Eran Salzmann will prepare creamy potato and leek soup; Chef Meagan Couch from Red’s Bar and Grill will feature her stuffed green pepper soup; and Belluccios will provide homemade bread to accompany the soup.

In addition, a variety of other soups will be made by the library board trustees and librarians, including chicken noodle, broccoli-cheese, chili and sausage/corn chowder. The cost of the supper which includes up to two bowls of soup, bread, crackers, dessert and drink will be $6.50 for adults. The cost

for children 8 and under will be $3.

Containers for take-out will be provided. The kids will also receive a complimentary “goody bag” including some fun Halloween prizes and treats.

In addition, door prizes will be given out each half hour throughout the event.

LAMOILLE — Saturday, Oct. 15, 10:30 a.m., the library will host a Halloween/fall story hour with librarian Joyce Sondgeroth. Stories, snacks and crafts will be available.

Therapy Thursdays is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

ALPLM acquires papers of ‘Spoon River’ poet SPRINGFIELD – The Edgar Lee Masters Home and Museum has given the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum (ALPLM) a trove of documents, manuscripts and photographs related to the famed author of “Spoon River Anthology.”

The donation was formally presented Tuesday, Aug. 23, Masters’ birthday. It represents a major expansion of the ALPLM’s holdings related to the prairie poets – Masters, Carl Sandburg and Vachel Lindsay.

“We’re best known for our Lincoln collection, of course, but the presidential library also contains millions of items documenting 200 years of Illinois history,” said Alan Lowe, executive director of the ALPLM. “We’re honored to improve our Illinois collection with the addition of these papers and photos from an important Illinois author.”

Masters Home and Museum President Kathy Olesen and board member Bobbie Lipsky said the collection is being donat-

ed because the presidential library can ensure it is preserved and shared with more people. Other Masters documents and artifacts remain at the museum, located at the corner of 8th and Jackson in Petersburg, Ill. “This is only the beginning of a new partnership between the Masters House Museum and the ALPLM that will continue as new items arrive,” Olesen and Lipsky said.

Masters grew up in Petersburg and Lewistown in central Illinois. The people and places he knew there became fodder for “Spoon River Anthology,” which used fictional epitaphs to tell the often dark stories of a small town.

Masters published many other volumes of poetry and essays, as well as several biographies. One biography, “Lincoln: The Man,” was harshly critical of the 16th president.

“Given his central Illinois roots, I trust that Mr. Masters would be thrilled by having this collection of papers housed at what was once the Illinois State

Historical Library. He admired the institution and donated several personal items in his lifetime,” said Ian Hunt, the presidential library’s chief of acquisitions and research.

One of those earlier donations, a death mask of Masters’ father, will be included in a new ALPLM exhibit this fall. The historical library, which began documenting the state’s heritage in 1889, became a part of the Lincoln Presidential Library in 2004.

The new donation includes hundreds of items: an 1834 letter by Masters’ grandfather, pictures of his family, complaints about his declining finances and much more.

ALPLM staff will catalog the contents over the next few months, giving scholars a better sense of what information awaits their study.

One such scholar is Jason Stacy, a history professor at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, who is beginning a research project on Masters and the Midwest.

More treasures get their turn in the spotlight Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum presents ‘Rare and Rarely Seen’ items from its vast collection SPRINGFIELD – A new exhibit at the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum will celebrate the depth of the library’s collection by highlighting items that rarely get a turn in the spotlight — from a document signed by George Washington and Thomas Jefferson to a pair of shoes from a Nazi concentration camp.

“Rare and Rarely Seen” opened to the public Sept. 28 and will run until Jan. 29, 2017.

“What makes this exhibit so special is that it shows the depth of our collection through docu-

ments and artifacts that, in most cases, have never been on display before,” said Alan Lowe, executive director of the presidential library and museum.

“We’re excited to share these rare items with our visitors.”

Among the items on display in “Rare and Rarely Seen” are: • Wooden shoes worn by a prisoner at the Dachau concentration camp.

• A commission naming a federal marshal, signed

by President George Washington and Secretary of State Thomas Jefferson.

• A Howitzer shell representing Illinois that was fired during President John F. Kennedy’s funeral.

• A dress worn by Marilyn Monroe.

• A letter from Robert E. Lee to Ulysses S. Grant expressing concern that he might be indicted for treason. It includes Grant’s handwritten recommendation that Lee not be prosecuted.

The exhibit also includes two interactive features. One was inspired by the section on politics and will let visitors vote on their favorite item in the exhibit.

Another asks visitors to write about rare, precious items from their own lives; their answers will

be posted for everyone to see.

“Rare and Rarely Seen” will be presented in the museum’s Illinois Gallery. The exhibit is free with regular admission to the museum.

The exhibit will be accompanied by a series of special events over the next four months.

Kid-friendly events are planned for Oct. 3 and Oct. 10. The historians and curators who produced the exhibit will offer a behind-the-scenes look at it on Nov. 17.

The Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum, a division of the

Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, is dedicated to telling the story of America’s 16th president through old-fashioned scholarship and modern technology.

It includes some 12 million items collected by the Illinois State Historical Library, which was founded in 1889 and eventually became part of the presidential library.

The class will be taught by Susan Glassman, Extension educator.

The class offers research-based education for people who are newly diagnosed, caring for a loved one, or have managed the disease for years. This class is designed to empower participants with knowledge and tools necessary for living with the disease and maintaining adequate glucose control. Each class includes a cooking demonstration and taste testing of the program recipes.

PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton is providing a monthly healthy cooking program. Ashley Schwind, Perry’s registered dietitian, will offer a free cooking demonstration and provide tips on how to make healthy meals with samples and educational material.

“In the Kitchen with Ashley” will meet the third Thursday of the month at 5 p.m. in the lower level conference room at the hospital. The next cooking program will meet on Thursday, Oct. 20.

HBB is a newly-formed group to ensure the sport of bowling is continued at Hall High School. With tight budgets, some extra-curricular activities could be cut, so they hope to keep raising funds to keep this sport alive.

Donations will be used to assist the bowling program with expenses such as tournament fees, equipment, travel, food and any other expenses deemed necessary the Hall High School budget can’t meet.

Optimist fruit sale

PRINCETON — The Princeton Optimist Club is selling fruit (Texas oranges and grapefruit) as their major fundraiser of the year.

The Optimist Club provides many different activities for the youth of Princeton and the surrounding area. These activities include the Halloween costume parade, pumpkin races, Easter egg hunt, speech and essay contests, and support of the baseball, softball, soccer and JFL programs.

Fruit can be purchased from any Optimist member, at the Chamber of Commerce office, the senior center or by calling Gary Patterson at 815-8753767. The cost for a 20-pound box is $22 for oranges or grapefruit. A box of mixed oranges and grapefruit is $24.

Seeing ‘Shadows’ of yesteryear ...

The Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War re-enactment marched into City-County Park on Saturday and Sunday, giving event-goers a glimpse into the past. The history lesson included a host of activities, including battles, press conferences, a dance, food and a visit from President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln, also known as Max and Donna Daniels, who were appearing for the last time at the event.

Cornpicker Reunion set for Oct. 14-15 in Walnut

WALNUT — The ever-popular Cornpicker Reunion will be Friday, Oct. 14, and Saturday, Oct. 15, at the Bolz farm located at 14365 2550 North Ave. in Walnut.

“Dozens of vintage cornpickers and shellers, ranging in model year from the 1940s to the 1970s, will harvest the field,” promises Kevin Larkey, who farms the land. Larkey went on to say, “I’ve received interest from vintage cornpicker and farm equipment enthusiasts and collectors from all over the Midwest. This reunion is only held every two years, so they’re excited to again be a part of the event.”

The corn plot to be harvested was planted similarly to check row-planted corn to accommodate the older harvesters.

Pack the Place Pink

PRINCETON — Perry Memorial Hospital in Princeton will sponsor a “Pack the Place Pink Night” Tuesday, Oct. 18, at the LaMoille/Ohio girls volleyball game, at LaMoille High School.

In recognition of breast cancer awareness, Perry Memorial and LaMoille High School are teaming together to show support for both the Lady Lions and breast cancer survivors.

The freshmen game will start at 4:30 p.m., the sophomore game will start at 5:30 p.m. and the varsity game will start at 7:30 p.m. Those that wear pink to the game will have the opportunity to register for a door prize. In addition, Perry will be giving out educational materials regarding breast cancer and the importance of self-breast exams.

Baseball clinic

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its fall instructional basketball clinic for boys ages 8-13 Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16, in the gym.

The clinic will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. both days and will cover ball handling, shooting, defensive fundamentals (footwork and positioning) and offensive fundamentals such as proper screening and footwork and cutting.

Participants will interact with members of the 2016-17 men’s team, head coach Chris Herman and assistant Justin Jacobson.

Fall Trout Season

SPRINGFIELD – The 2016 Illinois fall trout fishing season will open on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 53 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.

Locally, anglers may fish in Bureau County at the Hennepin Canal Parkway.

The Illinois catchable trout program is funded entirely by those who use the program through the sale of Inland Trout Stamps. The IDNR stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the fall season.

No trout may be taken from any of the stocked sites from Oct. 1 until the fall trout season opens at 5 a.m. Oct.15. Anyone attempting to take (harvest) trout before the legal harvest season opening will be issued citations.

All anglers – including those using fly fishing gear who intend to release fish caught before Oct. 15 – must have a valid fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout.

Illinois fishing licenses and Inland Trout Stamps are available at DNR Direct license and permit locations, including many bait shops, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. Not all fall trout sites open at 5 a.m. on opening day. Anglers are reminded to check the opening time of their favorite trout fishing location prior to the season.

NFL flag football PERU — With NFL flag football, boys and girls learn the basics and fundamentals of football, and interact and become more active with children their age in a less aggressive form of the game.

Games will be held indoors at the YMCA Green Gym, on Saturdays, Oct. 15 and 22.

In the event of rain, they will meet indoors at the Green Gym. Second- and third-graders will play from 9 to 10 a.m., and fourthand fifth-graders will play from 10 to 11 a.m. The fee is $50 per member and $60 for non-members.
