Tickets on sale for Patsy Cline show PRINCETON — Mary Pfeifer will be bringing her “Simply Patsy” show back to the Grace Performing Arts Center, 316 S. Main St., Princeton, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 18.

Pfeifer first performed the show to capacity audiences at the Grace in the spring of 2013.

In “Simply Patsy,” Pfeifer performs the songs of the late and legendary country music singer Patsy Cline. Tickets are $18. They can be purchased at the Festival 56 box office at the Grace.

Fall box office hours are noon to 2 p.m. on Friday

Pfeifer played Cline in the play “Always Patsy Cline” in 2009. Because her performance received outstanding reviews, Pfeifer developed her “Simply Patsy” show. In addition to performing Cline’s music, Pfeifer also provides a glimpse into Cline’s life as a daughter, wife, and performer focused on making her mark in the music world.

The Grace Performing Arts Center is completely accessible and ample free parking is available nearby.

Bus trip to see ‘Camelot’ at Drury Lane PRINCETON — The Learning Stage Committee of the Princeton Theatre Group has announced its annual fall theatre excursion.

This year’s selection is a performance of the iconic musical “Camelot” at the critically acclaimed Drury Lane Theatre in Oak Brook.

The date of the event is Nov. 9. Participants will depart from the Grace Theatre, 316 S. Main St., Princeton, at 9:30 a.m. on a Green River Lines excursion bus to Oak Brook.

The day’s outing

includes a champagne brunch at Drury Lane before seeing a matinee performance of “Camelot.”

The bus will arrive back in Princeton at approximately 7 p.m. Transportation, brunch and the show are all included in the $120 cost for the excursion.

Lerner and Loewe’s “Camelot” is one of the most beloved shows in the American musical theatre canon, having thrilled audiences since it opened on Broadway in 1960. A fantasy built

on the legend of King Arthur’s Roundtable, it features timeless songs such as “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood,” “If Ever I Would Leave You” and the title song itself.

Tickets may be purchased by mail, by calling 815-879-5656 or in person at the Grace. The box office is open on Fridays from noon to 2 p.m. and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to noon. Tickets may also be purchased via the Festival 56 website www.festival56.com.

The deadline for ordering tickets is Oct. 17.

PRINCETON — Thursday, Oct. 9, the Friends of the Library Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. and discuss “Mrs. Poe” by Lynn Cullen.

Everyone is invited to join the group. Also at 6:30 p.m., Wild with Words, a creative writing group, is led by Martha Brunell.

The program is an intuitive and improvisational writing process for excited and reluctant writers. Anyone is welcome to join the group.

At 6:30 p.m., the library will also host a musical performance — Phil Passen, hammered dulcimer, music of the Civil War. This program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council Agency.

Illinois Valley Scene themselves itching for new adventures.

Thursday, Oct. 16, Friends of the Library Book Sale will be open from 5 to 8 p.m.

SPRING VALLEY — Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library will host juggler and stilt-walker Jason Kollum at 6 p.m. in the children’s library. During the first part of the program, Kollum performs for the audience, but the last part of the show is where he gives children a chance to learn how to juggle. Kollum offers fantastic, free entertainment for adults and children of all ages.

The program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The library encourages the public to support the Illinois Valley Arts Trust, so more programs may be offered to enrich the community through cultural events.

TISKILWA — Saturday, Oct. 11 Sue Brooker, University of Illinois Extension, 4-H and youth development coordinator, will be hosting fun activities for youth ages 5 and younger.

The “Fall into 4-H” program will be from 10 a.m. to noon. This event will be a great opportunity to ask questions about the 4-H program, enroll youth in the program and inquire about the Tiskilwa-based club. If unable to attend, but would like to know more about 4-H contact the University of Illinois Extension Office at 815875-2878.

Monday, Oct. 13, a children’s story hour will be from 2 to 3 p.m. All ages welcome.

Tuesday, Oct. 21, Lynne Weber and Mary Ellen Dugosh will give a women’s health presentation on ovarian cancer. The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at the library.

Prizes, refreshments and lots of information will be provided.

LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library will host an informational meeting from 5 to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15. Trained Healthcare Marketplace/Get Covered Illinois navigators from the Bureau County Health Department will explain the process and answer your questions. Open enrollment starts Nov. 15.

This program will not benefit Medicare participants.

Also, patrons can purchase Lois Beattie-Blackwell’s book at the library for $22.

OHIO — The library is selling butter braids as a fundraiser. Orders can be placed at the library or with any library board member. Orders are due Nov. 6.

WYANET — Tuesday, Oct. 14 the library’s computer class will meet at 1 p.m. Dorene Stalter will bring her expertise if the

patrons bring their questions.

Thursday, Oct. 9, the R.A. Sapp Library Board will host its annual cemetery walk for the library’s 2nd Thursday@the Library program at 6:30 p.m.

The public is invited.

Park on the street, bring a flashlight and meet at the cannon. This year, some of the sites visited will include a Sapp family member — the library wouldn’t be here without them, also a Civil War veteran and former slave. For questions or more information, call the library at 815-699-2343.

WALNUT — Halloween is just around the corner.

Get ready for the holiday by checking out some Halloween books from the Walnut Public Library.

The library also has 48 other Halloween titles for children’s reading pleasure.

MAGNOLIA — The Magnolia Branch Library will be hosting a special pumpkin decorating contest.

Starting Oct. 18, children can come to the library to pick out a pumpkin or use one of their own to create a book character using their imagination and favorite book. If children need help selecting a book character, the librarian can help locate popular book characters from which to choose.

Pumpkins can be decorated at the library during open hours on Oct. 21 and 23, or children can take them home to decorate. Pumpkins should be brought back to the library to be displayed for family and friends to see by Oct 25. Judging will take place on Oct. 30 and prizes will be given to all.

STANDARD — Friday, Oct. 17, the Melikin Puppet Theatre will present the favorite spooky tale of “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” at 6:30 p.m. at the Standard Branch Library, located within the Putnam County Community Center.

Using a double stage and lighting techniques, Melikin Puppet Theatre brings to life the story’s narrator Rip van Winkle, as he introduces schoolmaster, Ichabod Crane, the lovely Katrina Van Tassel and Brom Bones.

After a party at Katrina’s, Ichabod is warned about riding home on the Sleepy Hollow road. The “headless horseman” is known to ride that road at night. The town wakes the next day to find that Ichabod Crane has disappeared. Did he leave town? Is there really a headless horseman? Some questions are best left unanswered. Suitable for children ages 3 years and older, including adults.

This Week The Wyanet Library Board will again sponsor a walk in the Forest Hill Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public. Those participating are encouraged to wear practical shoes and come with a flashlight, and to meet at the cannon. Parking will be on the street only, not in the cemetery. Illinois Valley Community College will hold its 42nd annual College Night from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 9, in the gymnasium.

A financial aid information session will be held at 7 p.m. High school and college students, parents and community members can speak to college and university representatives about the admission process. IVCC faculty, staff and program coordinators will be able to discuss opportunities available at IVCC as well as transfer options.

Nightmare of Fairgrounds Road will be held from 7 to 9:30 p.m. until Saturday, Oct. 25. The event features live actors, animated props and the unexpected. Admission is $8 per person and there is a speed pass for $10 which gets the ticket-holder to the front of the line.

The Varna Women’s Club will hold its annual rummage sale at the Varna fire and ambulance building, located just off Route 17 on South Chestnut Street in Varna. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 10 and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11. All proceeds will go to scholarships for Midland High School graduating seniors, ARK, Varna Fire and Ambulance, food pantries and other local charities.

A Trivia Night fundraiser, with proceeds going to Braveheart Children’s Advocacy Center, will be held Saturday, Oct. 11, at the Princeton Elks Lodge, 1105 E. Peru St. Doors open at 5 p.m. and trivia will start at 5:30 p.m. The

cost is $10 per person, with teams of up to eight players. The night consists of 10 rounds of 10 questions. Food and drinks will be available for purchase.

The Prairie Wind Ensemble, in residence at Illinois Central College, will open its 37th season at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at the Performing Arts Center at Illinois Central College.

Serves 2.

I often hear from folks who say it’s difficult to cook for just themselves or two people, so I thought I would offer a few recipes that can be prepared for fewer servings.

Quick Baked Apple 1 teaspoon finely chopped nuts 1 teaspoon raisins 1 teaspoon flaked coconut 1 medium tart apple Dash ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons apple juice 1 1/2 teaspoons maple syrup In a small bowl, combine nuts, raisins and coconut.

Set aside. Core apple and peel the top third, place in a microwave-safe dish. Fill center with nut mixture.

Sprinkle with cinnamon.

Pour apple juice in to dish and syrup over apple.

Cover and microwave on high for 2 to 3 minutes or until apple is tender basting and rotating ever minute. Serve warm. Serves 1.

1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 sandwich rolls, split In a bowl, combine the egg, mustard, bread crumbs and tuna; mix well. Shape into four patties (mixture will be soft).

In a skillet over medium heat, fry patties in oil on both sides until lightly browned. Place two patties on each roll. Serves 2.

Smoked Pork Chops with Dressing 1 large navel orange 2 smoked bone-in pork rib chops (3/4-inch thick) 1 1/2 teaspoons vegetable oil 1/4 cup thinly sliced celery 2 tablespoons finely chopped onion

2 tablespoons minced fresh parsley 3 tablespoons butter or margarine 1 cup seasoned croutons 1/4 cup chopped walnuts 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons chicken broth Grate 1 teaspoon orange peel, set aside. Peel and section the orange. Set four segments aside, coarsely chop remaining segments and set aside. In a skillet, brown pork chops on both sides in oil. Place chops in an ungreased 9-inch square baking dish; set aside. In the same skillet, sauté the celery, onion and parsley in butter until tender. Add the croutons, walnuts and pepper, cook for 1 or 2 minutes. Stir in broth and reserved chopped orange and peel. Cook 1 minute longer. Spoon dressing over chops, top with

Hearty Stuffed Potatoes 2 medium baking potatoes 1/2 cup cottage cheese 3 tablespoons mayonnaise 2 teaspoons prepared mustard 1/2 teaspoon dill weed 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1/2 cup plus 1 tablespoon shredded cheddar cheese, divided 1 hard cooked egg, chopped 1 plum tomato, thinly sliced Bake the potatoes at 375° for 1 hour or until tender. Cool. Cut a thin slice off the top of each potato. Scoop out the pulp, leaving a thin shell.

In a bowl, mash the pulp, with cottage cheese, mayonnaise, mustard, dill, salt

and pepper. Stir in 1/2 cup of the cheddar cheese and egg. Spoon into potato shells. Top with the remaining cheese. Place on a baking sheet. Bake at 375° for 25 to 30 minutes or until heated through garnish with the tomato slices. Serves 2.

Saucy Brussels Sprouts 1 10-ounce package frozen Brussels sprouts 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 1 tablespoon butter or margarine 2 teaspoons brown sugar 1 teaspoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon ground mustard

Dash of pepper 1/4 cup milk 1/4 cup sour cream 1 2-ounce jar diced pimientos, drained Cook the Brussels sprouts according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, sauté onion in butter until tender. Stir in brown sugar, flour, salt, mustard and pepper until blended.

Gradually add milk. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 1 minute. Reduce heat to low. Drain sprouts, cut in half. Add to sauce and heat through. Stir in sour cream and pimientos. Serves 2.

Running Princeton half marathon PRINCETON — The Princeton Park District will host its third annual Half Marathon on Oct. 11 beginning and ending at Zearing Park.

Packet pick-up starts at 7:30 a.m. and the race starts at 8:30 a.m. A kids’ fun run will follow at 10:30 a.m.

Basketball Met men’s basketball PRINCETON — The men’s 4-on-4 basketball league will start up at the Bureau County Metro Center on Oct. 13 with games running each Monday. A single-elimination tournament will follow. Cost is $300 per team.

Met youth basketball

PRINCETON — The Princeton Park District will offer a youth basketball clinic at the Bureau County Metro Center for Grades 1-6 meeting on Saturdays.

The clinic is designed for everyone from the beginner to players looking to improve their skills.

Instructors will include current PHS players.

The Park District’s youth basketball league for Grades 1-6 will be held Saturday mornings, running Nov. 1 through

Dec. 6. Emphasis will be on team work and sportsmanship.
