Shadows of the Blue and Gray brings the Civil War to life The memory of the Civil War will never die, and events like Shadows of the Blue and Gray help bring the war to life, allowing attendees a glimpse of what life in that era might have been like. On Saturday, Oct. 10, and Sunday, Oct. 11, Princeton’s City-County Park will be the scene of battles and demonstrations of the methods a typical Civil War era field hospital would use to care for the wounded.

Artisans will demonstration how people back then made candles, brooms, tools and blacksmith and woodworking goods. A Civil War fashion show will highlight the fashion of the 1860s. President Abraham Lincoln and his wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, impersonated by Max and Donna Daniels of Wheaton, will be at the event all weekend.

Admission is $5 for ages 6 and older; kids 5 and under are free (children must be accompanied by an adult).

Prairie Wind Ensemble sets opening concert for Oct. 11 PEORIA — The Prairie Wind Ensemble, in residence at Illinois Central College, will open its 38th season on Sunday, Oct. 11.

The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Performing Arts Center at Illinois Central College. The ensemble will be under the direction of David Wetmore and Richard Cangro. The concert will also feature saxophone soloist, Jodi Slagel.

Music for the afternoon will include a wide range of musical selections that should include something for everyone.

The concert will include: David Maslanka’s “Mother Earth,” “Colonial Song”

by Granger, “Sketches on a Tudor Psalm” and “Florentiner March. The second half will include John Mackey’s “Xerxes,” “Illyrian Dances,” “Crown Imperial March,” Grainger’s “Ye Banks and Braes O’Bonnie Doon” and “Kirkpatrick Fanfare,” Soloist Jodi Slagel will be performing “Tango Etudes” by Astor Piazzolla.

These have been arranged for the ensemble by Dan Dietrich.

Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., Richard M. Cangro, Ph. D., is now an associate professor of music education at Western Illinois University. He began his 20-plus year teaching career as a public school band and orchestra director in Connecticut, as well as a youth ensemble conductor and chamber music coach for the Hartt School Community Pre-college Division, University of Hartford. Cangro received a bachelor of music in trumpet performance from the Manhattan School of Music, a master of music education from the Hartt School, and a Ph.D. in music education also from Hartt.

Musically, Cangro has a wide range of performance experiences as a trumpet player and conductor. He performs with the Quincy Symphony and is a member of the Knox-Galesburg Symphony. He has conducted several festival bands and orchestras and is currently the music director/conductor of the Monmouth Civic Orchestra.

Cangro is active as a presenter, curriculum consultant and adjudicator. He has presented for several school district in-services and at numerous music educator conferences throughout the country, as well as professional development engagements in Canada, Myanmar, Taiwan, and the UK. At WIU, Cangro teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in music education as well as directs the Community Music School, supervises student teachers, conducts the youth string orchestra, and advises the collegiate NAfME chapter.

David Wetmore was director of bands at Macomb Senior High School in Macomb from 1985-2014. Prior to that he was director of bands at Canfield Middle School in Canfield, Ohio. Wetmore attended the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and received his bachelor of music degree in music education from Youngstown State University. He received his master of music degree in trumpet performance from Boston University. His principal trumpet teachers were: Roger Voisin, Boston Symphony Orchestra; James Darling, Cleveland Orchestra; Eugene Young, Oberlin College; and Esotto Pellegrini, Youngstown State University.

While at Macomb Senior High School his marching bands received numerous awards including grand champion at field show competitions at the University of Illinois and Western Illinois University. The concert program received numerous awards including best in class at the National Adjudicators Festival in Grades IV and VI music.

In 2003, Wind Symphony was named as the honor band at the Grand National Adjudicators Festival in Chattanooga, Tenn.

The Wind Symphony has performed at the ILMEA State Festival in 1999 and the Music for All National Concert Band Festival in 2000 and 2007. The Wind Symphony has also performed at the University of Illinois Superstate Festival and was named the honor band numerous times in Class A. Wetmore’s educational awards include: The National Band Association Citation of Excellence, the Macomb Quality of Life Award, Walmart Teacher of the Year, the Jaycees Young Educator of the Year, and the Phi Beta Mu Bandmaster Hall of Fame. He has also been a clinician at the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic in 2000, 2012 and 2014.

In 2005, Rotary International named Wetmore a Paul Harris Fellow. His professional associations include, the National Association for Music Education, the Illinois Music Educators Association, Phi Beta Mu, and Pi Kappa Lambda. Still active as a performer, Wetmore is principal trumpet in the Knox-Galesburg Symphony Orchestra.

He and his wife, Marsha, live in Macomb with their golden retriever, Ralphie. They have two sons, Michael, an architect in New York City, and Matthew, a doctoral student in audiology at Illinois State University.

Jodi Slagel is the 5-12 Director of Bands at the Princeville School District in Princeville. She gradu-

ated Summa Cum Laude with honors in 2013 from Illinois State University with a double major in music education and saxophone performance. In college she placed third in her school’s 2011 Concerto Competition, competed in the 2010 North American Saxophone Alliance National Saxophone Competition in Georgia, was selected to perform on a master class at the 2011 NASA Regional Convention, and was a soloist on many of ISU’s recordings, including multiple premier recordings. Recently, she has soloed with the Peoria Municipal Band in 2010 and 2014 and was honored to join the Prairie Wind Ensemble in January of 2014. Slagel is a native of Washington, Ill., and when she’s not teaching or playing her saxophone, she likes to bike, hike and play with her cat, Luca.

The ensemble membership represents many professional backgrounds.

Approximately 70 percent of members are current or retired professional music educators. The remaining 30 percent represent a diverse set of occupations including recording technician, nurse, educator, anesthesiologist, information technologist, electronics technician, engineer, attorney, homemaker, electrician, retail manager and project manager. Members are from Knoxville, Canton, Macomb, Bloomington, Normal, Peoria Heights, Washington, North Pekin, Marquette Heights, Avon, Morton, Cuba, Galesburg, Chillicothe, Dunlap, Glasford, Mapleton, Bartonville, Metamora, Germantown Hills, Marseilles, Farmington, Elmwood as well as Peoria, East Peoria and Morton.

Tickets are $8 per concert, $6 for students and seniors. Children under 12 are free. Tickets may be purchased through the Illinois Central College Performing Arts Center by phone 309-694-5136 or in person. Group tickets can also be purchased by contacting the box office.

Carmen and Rob Wilson of rural Spring Valley secure a Halloween decoration along the Fright Night Trail. The Wilson family has been in charge of setting up the spook walk at Echo Bluff for many years. This year they’ve created a twilight theme for the trail. Fright Night returns to Hall Township’s Echo Bluff Park SPRING VALLEY — At first look, Echo Bluff Park appears to be a lovely wooded park away from the hustle of city life, a peaceful retreat in our fast-paced world. Fifty weeks a year, this is a true statement. Beware: this idyllic repose is anything but peaceful during Fright Night — the weekends of Oct. 17 and 24.

During those two weekends, this former Girl Scout camp is transformed into a haunted haven of ghosts, goblins, zombies and the living dead. (Warning: those

brave enough to venture down the Trails of Terror may suffer from recurrent Frightmares.)

If the trails aren’t challenge enough, Fright Night participants can take part in Ghostly Paintball Attack. Ever try to shoot a moving target?

Ghosts will be darting across the paintball field and for a nominal fee, participants will have the opportunity to test their skill.

A Smiling Pumpkin Trail has been designed for the younger guests.

A guide will lead them

down a maze of pumpkins and spider webs — which is far less scary than the Trails of Terror.

Or, guests can visit the Schoolhouse Crafty Web and create a holiday craft as a remembrance of Fright Night 2015.

Boogie Man Bingo will also be a fun option for those who attend Fright Night.

Fright Night 2015 at Hall Township’s Echo Bluff Park is from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 24. The entrance fee is $5 per person, with children under 3 free.

PAC will present ‘New Works’ show PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council will present a show of area art teachers’ work in its gallery through Oct. 25.

This is the fourth time the teachers have exhibited together.

Thirteen artists will be exhibiting using a variety of mediums and materials to express ideas about their work. There will be photography, ceramics, mixed media works, paintings, pastels, assemblages, pen and ink, low-relief wall hangings

and jewelry on display.

Most of the work will be offered for sale during the show.

Show organizer Kathy Ballard states that “this time many artists in the show tried new mediums or completely different subject matter for their work. It was exciting to see them push their work forward to a higher level of expression, and to challenge themselves by creating art outside their comfort zones. This show should appeal to the pub-

lic because of the variety of art work on display; and it will be nice to see what area art teachers are doing on their own when they are not in their classrooms with their students.”

Gallery hours for the show will be 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, and 10 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays.

Brookfield Zoo’s annual Boo! at the Zoo offers fun for the entire family BROOKFIELD — Brookfield Zoo’s annual Boo! at the Zoo Halloween celebration returns with notso-scary and fun-filled activities for the entire family to enjoy on Oct. 17-18 and Oct. 24-25 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day.

During Boo! at the Zoo, presented by Bright StartSM College Savings, zoo-goers can get into the Halloween spirit by learning about creepy crawlers like scorpions, giant spiders and snakes. Each day during Boo! at the Zoo, special chats led by animal care staff will highlight interesting facts about these animals and more.

Guests can head over to Australia House at 11:30 a.m. for a chat about bats, then wander over to Regenstein Wolf Woods to learn about the Mexican gray wolves at noon.

On the zoo’s West Mall, guests can watch the Pumpkin Smasher demolish pumpkins into tiny pieces every hour. Professional pumpkin carver Steve Dahlke will be on hand and will use a variety of tools to create masterpieces out of gigantic 1,000-pound pumpkins. Zoo-goers can pick up carving tips and tricks during his demonstrations and can even carve their own pumpkins to take home.

Ghosts and goblins of all ages can join in the popular costume parade, which kicks off at 1 p.m. by the North Mall and goes around Roosevelt Fountain before concluding on the West Mall. Following the parade, guests can show off their Halloween attire in a costume contest beginning at 1:30 p.m.

Judges will choose prize winners in four categories: Scariest, best animal theme, most original, and best group theme.

Don’t want the fun to stop? Keep the good times rollin’ with a ride on the Haunted Hayride and a trek through the Craized Maize corn maze. The whole family can enjoy a spin on the Creepy Carousel, build a scarecrow at Hamill Family Play Zoo, and snap photos together at pumpkin patches throughout the park. In addition, guests can purchase and enjoy some fall treats: Pumpkin soup and freshly-baked cupcakes with Halloween-themed decorations.

LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library has several things happening in October.

Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 10 to 11:30 a.m., the Bureau County Health Department will hold a flu vaccine clinic at the library. Bring your Medicare card or other insurance card. Medicaid will cover the vaccine for children under 18 years of age. If your insurance does not cover the vaccine, the cost is $25 per person.

Thursday, Oct. 15, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Illinois Valley Cellular will hold a class on using smart phones. Having a bit of trouble figuring out just what all you can do with your smart phone? Bring your smart phone with you and get some help.

Monday, Oct. 19, at 4 p.m., the drama students from Crossroads High School will present Animal Antics, an interactive story time. Join in on the fun, have a snack and make an animal themed craft.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is hosting ESL classes on Wednesdays at 6 p.m. The classes will be held each Wednesday through Oct. 28. The classes are free.

Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m., the library will hold a blood pressure/blood sugar test clinic. This is a free service.

Thursday, Oct. 15, from 8:30 to 10 a.m., the library will hold a flu shot clinic.

The cost is $30, however free for those with a Medicare card. Patrons must bring their card and identification.

On Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m, the library hosts Rocket Readers! Kids play games, listen to stories and participate in other activities designed to encourage kids to love reading. There is no charge for the program.

SHEFFIELD — Sunday, Oct. 18, the Sheffield Public Library will host its annual soup supper at the Sheffield Community Center. Serving will run from 3 to 6 p.m. This year all of the restaurants in Sheffield will contribute to the fundraiser by preparing one of their specialty soups. Chef Monika Sudako from the Chestnut Street Inn will make squash soup, Z Best chef, Eran Salzmann, will prepare creamy potato and leek soup, Meagan Couch from Red’s Bar and Grill will feature her stuffed green pepper soup and Belluccios will provide homemade bread to accompany the soup.

In addition, a variety of other soups will be made by the library board trustees and librarians including tomato, chicken noodle, broccoli-cheese, chili and sausage/corn chowder. The cost of the supper which includes up to two bowls of soup, bread, crackers, dessert and drink will be $6.50 for adults.

This year, there will be a kid’s menu including a hot dog, chips, caramel corn and drink for $3. The kids will also receive a complimentary “goody bag” including some fun Halloween prizes and treats.

Door prizes will be given out each half hour throughout the event.

Princeton Public Library looking at adding charging station PRINCETON — Princeton Public Library is exploring the option of offering a multi-device charging station in their cafe.

EBSCO Professional Partnership Group, part of the trusted library vendor EBSCO Information Services, is spearheading implementation of the service.

The board of directors for the library felt a charging station would be convenient for patrons with devices in need of recharging.

The station is capable of accommodating the most popular systems of cellular phones, tablets and laptop computers including Apple, Samsung Galaxy and other electronic brands.

EBSCO is currently seeking a local business willing to sponsor the charging station. If a sponsor is not found, the charging station will not be added to the library’s existing services.

Effective immediately, patrons to the Princeton Public Library can choose to receive a Limited Edition Charlie Brown library card rather than the standard blue and white plastic one. The cost to upgrade is $5 and can be purchased by local Princeton patrons or by paying non-residents. The card is available to new or existing patrons.

In addition, the library has changed the cost of replacing a lost card to $5.

Cod Delight How about a meal of fish for something different? We haven’t done fish for quite some time. Always looking for something different to wet your appetites.

Crunchy Tuna Salad with Tomatoes 3/4 cup reduced fat mayonnaise 1/2 cup chopped sweet onion 1 celery rib, chopped 1 teaspoon minced fresh parsley or 1/4 teaspoon dried parsley 3/4 teaspoon pepper 1 12-ounce can albacore tuna in water, drained and flaked 4 medium tomatoes cut into wedges In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, onions, celery, parsley and pepper. Stir in tuna. Serve with tomatoes.

Buffalo Fried Shrimp 2/3 cup mayonnaise 1/4 cup plus 3 tablespoons buffalo hot sauce 2 tablespoons whole grain mustard 1 heaping tablespoon chopped dill pickle 1 heaping tablespoon minced shallot 1 heaping tablespoon finely chopped fresh parsley Peanut or vegetable oil for deep frying 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup lager beer 1 1/2 pounds large shrimp, peeled and deveined (tails intact) 2 stalks celery, finely sliced diagonally Mix the mayonnaise, 1/4 cup hot sauce, mustard, pickle, shallot and parsley in a

small bowl; cover and refrigerator. Preheat the oven to 350°. Heat 2 inches of peanut oil in large wide pot over medium heat until a deep fry thermometer reads 365°. Meanwhile, whisk the flour, beer and the remaining 3 tablespoons hot sauce in a large bowl; add the shrimp and toss to coat. Working in batches, remove the shrimp from the batter with a slotted spoon and fry until cooked through and golden brown, 2 to 3 minutes. Return the oil to 365° between batches. Transfer to paper towels to drain. Keep in warm oven. Add the celery to the remaining batter and toss to coat. Remove with a slotted spoon and fry until golden brown, about 2 minutes. Serve the fried shrimp and celery with the prepared sauce.

Poor Man’s Beer Battered Fish Vegetable oil 1 cup beer or as needed 1 7-ounce container shake and pour buttermilk pancake mix 2 pounds trout fillets (4 8-ounce fillets skinned or scaled) Heat 1/4 inch oil in large skillet over medium heat. Pour beer into pancake mix container (the beer is replacing the water the mix calls for). Make batter as thick or as thin as you like; I found that thicker than heavy cream works best.

Close lid and give it a few shakes. Pour batter into a shallow pan then dip fish into batter using tongs, or you can cut fish into smaller pieces and toss them right into batter and shake a few times.

Cooking in batches, remove fish from

1 small tomato, chopped 1/3 cup finely chopped onion 2 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons canola oil 4 to 5 teaspoons lemon juice 1 teaspoon dried parsley flakes 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1 small garlic clove, minced 1/8 teaspoon salt 4 4-ounce cod fillets 1 teaspoon seafood seasoning In a small bowl, combine the first nine ingredients. Put cod in an 11-by-7-inch baking dish. Top with tomato mixture.

Sprinkle with seafood seasoning. Microwave, covered, on high for 5 to 6 minutes or until fish just begins to flake easily with a fork.

Crunchy Butter Crumb Baked Catfish 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 4 6-ounce catfish fillets 4 teaspoons mayonnaise 1 teaspoon seasoned salt, divvied 1 cup Japanese bread crumbs (panko) 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese 1 tablespoon butter, melted 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley Lemon wedges Preheat oven to 400°. Brush a large rimmed baking sheet with oil. Place in oven until oil is very hot, approximately 5 minutes. Meanwhile, brush 1 side of each fillet with 1 teaspoon mayonnaise.

Sprinkle with 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt.

In a small bowl, combine remaining 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt, bread crumbs, cheese and melted butter. Sprinkle over fish, pressing gently. Carefully place fillets on hot baking sheet. Bake until crumb topping golden brown and fish

Instructional league OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College men’s basketball coach Chris Herman and his players will host a fall instructional league for boys from third through eighth grade from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 11, and Saturdays, Oct. 17 and 31.

Emphasis will be placed on individual and team defense and offense, shooting, ball handling and league play.

PHS Homecoming Parade

PRINCETON — Princeton High School presents its ‘Take Me to Funky Town’ Homecoming Parade at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 8 at 6 p.m. The festivities will begin at Zearing Park going north on Euclid Avenue, then west on Thompson Street, north onto Main Street then turning onto East Central Avenue and continuing to Princeton High School.

OGLESBY — A 5K Run/Walk is starting up in memory of Connie Dzierzynski Skerston, who passed away unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm in March at the age of 45. A scholarship has been founded in her name at IVCC, where she served in administration.

The race will be Saturday, Oct. 10, starting at 10 a.m. at IVCC. Entry fee is $25 by Saturday, Oct. 3, and $30 after.
