Shadows ... History relived PRINCETON — Area residents will be able to take several steps back in time this weekend, as the Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War re-enactment returns to Princeton’s City-County Park.

Event-goers will be transported back in time to many years ago, as they witness a variety of events from the Civil War-era — a place in time that clearly changed the lives of everyone back then and still impacts the nation today.

As you tromp through City-Council Park this weekend, you’ll be treated to many events from yesteryear, including work camps and artisan workshops, visits from period dignitaries, battle re-enactments, music and much, much more. No doubt you’ll leave the event a changed person, as many of the events will allow you to relive those historic moments from the past.

While the event will be enjoyable for folks of all ages, you’ll probably find a variety of history lessons you’ll be able to safely tuck away in your memory and revisit when you get home.

Farewell, President Lincoln 2016 Shadows of the Blue and Gray will be last appearance for popular re-enactor

PRINCETON — A highlight of every Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War re-enactment has been the sight of President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln. Easily recognized and remembered, the performances of Max and Donna Daniels have always added a special touch to the weekend’s events. But this year will mark the end of their appearances in Princeton as the legendary couple.

“It will be sad to see them go,” event coordinator Michael Robinson said.

Robinson, himself, has been a re-enactor for more than 20 years. While this will be the final year for the Lincolns, he’s announced there will be a firsttime appearance from another Civil War icon — General U.S. Ulysses S. Grant.

“We have a gentleman coming from Wisconsin to portray General Grant. I’ve seen him in the past, and he does a wonderful job. He’ll be doing a presentation each day,” Robinson said.

Those from south of the Mason-Dixon line will also have a special first-time guest to welcome — General Leonidas Polk, CSA. Robinson said, “This will be the re-enactor’s first year at our event as General Polk, although he’s been a re-enactor for a long time. He and his wife will also be doing a presentation, but it will be from the view of the simple soldier writing back and forth with his wife.”

He said the letters are presented through different points in the war and believes it will give people an understanding of what it was like not only in battle, but in the camps and back at home, too.

Longtime event narrator Gen. George Henry Thomas will again be helping to bring the war between the states to life for visitors. Also helping to transport visitors back in time will be infantry, cavalry and artillery units, as well as the many vendors who will be giving demonstrations of their era-appropriate crafts.

Robinson, as a teacher and as a re-enactor, said he’s regularly asked why people need to know about this pivotal time in American history.

His answer is simple: “Those who forget history are doomed to repeat it. The American Civil War was a desperate time in American history, and it was the first time an American president had been killed while in office. It was just a fascinating time all together.”

Max and Donna Daniels, who have portrayed President and Mrs. Abraham Lincoln for many years at the annual Shadows of the Blue and Gray Civil War re-enactment, will offer their final performance at this year’s event.

The Shadows of the Blue and Gray is an educational event designed to teach people about the Civil War and is an immersive, interactive experience.

Robinson said “You’ll hear the sights and sounds of the war ... the battle, the music, the aftermath. If you leave without learning something, you didn’t try hard enough.”

Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company to perform at PAC

Songbirds in Snow Forever stamps take flight PORTLAND, Ore. — The U.S. Postal Service celebrated four birds that brighten cold winter days recently by dedicating the Songbirds in Snow Forever stamps at the American Philatelic Society’s Stamp Show 2016 in Portland, Ore. One of the birds, the northern cardinal, is the state bird for Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia.

The stamps are available in booklets of 20, with each of the four stamp designs repeated five times. They feature the golden-crowned kinglet (Regulus satrapa), the cedar waxwing (Bombycilla cedrorum), the northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) and the red-breasted nuthatch (Sitta canadensis). Illustrator Robert Giusti paint-

ed the original designs in acrylic on canvas board, depicting each bird perched on a snow-covered branch.

Northern Cardinal A spot of bright red against the white of a snowy tree branch signals the presence of a northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis), one of winter’s most colorful and beautiful birds. Found in thickets along the edge of forests or in shrubby, overgrown fields and hedgerows as well as in backyards, cardinals usually appear in pairs but can gather in small flocks during the winter to forage for food. Their diet is mainly seeds and fruit, but they also eat insects. During the winter, cardinals are frequent visitors to birdfeeders. Sunflower seeds are a favorite food.

IVCC to host Day of the Arts!

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host the second Day of the Arts!, a free celebration that runs from noon to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15.

Community members and their children are invited to sample the arts at IVCC. Upon arriving, visitors will be greeted by cello duets and contemporary finger-style guitar in the lobby and the atrium. A brief dedication of the festival in the Cultural Centre features vocal music and the unveiling of the olio curtain during a vaudeville tribute at 12:30 p.m.

Additional performances include the percussion ensemble, the choir, the jazz band, a Dixieland band made up of members of the wind ensemble, a student ensemble and a song-and-dance variety show.

Fine arts workshops include acting, story-

telling, writing and a tour of studio facilities.

The Improv Team will be featured in the new Student Life Center and from 3:15 to 4:15 p.m., the stage will be open for descendants of the olio curtain’s original sponsors, and others, to have their pictures taken.

The 13-foot-by-20-foot curtain, dating from the turn of the 20th century, hung in the “Coliseum” opera house in Ladd. It is painted with a landscape scene surrounded by the names of local businesses sponsoring the curtain.

After the olio was donated to IVCC, the humanities, fine arts, and social sciences division brought in nationally-prominent conservators to restore it with the help of students, faculty and community members.

All events will take place indoors at IVCC.

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council has announced the Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Company of West Liberty, Iowa, will perform at the Prairie Arts Center on Saturday, Oct. 15.

The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre is a company organized to promote the art of puppetry by producing and presenting high-quality performances and workshops. They were formed in 1974, and tour nationally (30 states) and internationally (four other countries) delighting audiences with original scripts, whimsical scenery, live music and beautifully crafted puppets, including miniature marionettes, hand-and-rod puppets, shadow puppets and parade puppets.

Prairie Arts Council Theater — one at 2 p.m. and one at 5 p.m. The Eulenspiegel Puppet Theatre Co. has also agreed to run two workshops demonstrating the art of puppetry that morning at 10:30 and 11:30 a.m.

The ticket price for any of the performances or for either of the workshops is $10. Performance tickets will be sold at the Prairie Arts Center and at the door prior to each performance, however, because the workshops are restricted in size, reservations must be made and tickets purchased prior to Oct. 15 by calling the Prairie Arts Center at 815875-2787. The Prairie Arts Center is located at 24 Park Ave. East, Princeton.

Festival 56 to present Comedy Night PRINCETON — Festival 56 presents Comedy Night at the Grace Performing Arts Center at 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 7. The evening of stand-up comedy and improv features Chicago comedians Allison Dunne, Sohrab Forouzesh, Rob Johnson and Jordan Kulow.

The show will be R-rated, due to language and sexual content.

Dunne and Forouzesh open the evening with stand-up comedy sketches.

Dunne was a finalist in the Battle Royale for Milwaukee’s Funniest Comic and is the host of “Ladylike” in Chicago, a showcase where female comedians share their most disgusting stories. She has also performed for This Week’s Show, Sadsacks & Wisecracks, and dozens of other venues around the Midwest.

Forouzesh is a frequent performer at The Love Below Comedy Show in Chicago, where he also acts

as host. Of himself, he says, “Went to Western Michigan University. Started telling jokes. Met other people who tell jokes. Got really good at telling jokes.” He won both the comedy competition “The Last Bronco Standing” at WMU and the Kalamazoo Comedy Competition. He has performed at numerous comedy clubs, theaters and bars in Michigan and the Windy City.

Johnson and Kulow take the stage for the second half of the evening. Johnson, returning for his second Comedy Night in Princeton, teams up with fellow comedian Kulow for some seriously funny sketches. The two men are featured performers in Not From Here, a Chicago-based improv group. The duo will present their comedy routine, a blend of sketch and improv, which keeps the comedians on their toes and the audience on the edge of their seats. Both Johnson and

Kulow are graduates of the conservatory at the Second City Training Center and winners of several improv competitions. Not From Here has performed at LaughFest in Grand Rapids, the Beat Lounge at Second City’s Training Center, and Under the Gun Theatre in Chicago.

SHEFFIELD — Sunday, Oct. 16, from 4 to 7 p.m., the library will host its annual soup supper at the Sheffield Community Center. This year all of the restaurants in Sheffield will contribute to the fundraiser by preparing one of their specialty soups. Chef Monika

Sudakov from the Chestnut Street Inn will be making squash soup; Z Best chef Eran Salzmann will prepare creamy potato and leek soup; Chef Meagan Couch from Red’s Bar and Grill will feature her stuffed green pepper soup; and Belluccios will provide homemade bread to accompany the soup.

In addition, a variety of other soups will be made by the library board trustees and librarians, including chicken noodle, broccoli-cheese, chili and sausage/corn chowder. The cost of the supper which includes up to two bowls of soup, bread, crackers, dessert and drink will be $6.50 for adults. The cost for children 8 and under will be $3. Containers for take-out will be provided.

The kids will also receive a complimentary “goody bag” including some fun Halloween prizes and treats.

In addition, door prizes will be given out each half hour throughout the event.

LAMOILLE — Therapy Thursdays is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m.

Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

There is no cost to attend.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are

challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

WALNUT — Monday, Oct. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m., the library will host an adult coloring session.

On the go ... in and around Bureau County Lions host 12th annual IV Toy Run PRINCETON — The 12th annual Illinois Valley Toy Run sponsored by the Princeton Lions Club, featuring a 40-mile round trip countryside cruise, will be Sunday, Oct. 9, at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton.

Cars are expected from all over Central and Northern Illinois, Iowa, Southern Wisconsin, Chicago area and Eastern Indiana. Last year’s event drew 215 cars, and more are expected this year.

The scenic cruise is the high-

light of the event.

In the last 11 years, the Lions have raised more than $22,000 in toys for families in need, as well as over $2,500 for various needs around the community/county.

Grandma Rosies BBQ, brats, hot dogs and more will be offered along with hot chocolate and coffee and donuts. A $10 toy is the “entry fee,” and the Lions will except cash and go get the toy for you as well.

People are encouraged to

stop by with toys or monetary donations and do not have to have a classic car.

Many bring/donate more than one toy.

Toys can be for any age, boy or girl.

Gates open at 8 a.m., and the event ends at 3 p.m. after the 50/50 is pulled.

There will be a drivers’ meeting at 11:15 a.m. with the tour to begin at 11:30 a.m. The Lions are still taking vendors at $20 by calling 815-643-2040.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library will be hosting its annual soup supper on Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Sheffield Community Center.

Serving will run from 4 to 7 p.m. This year all of the restaurants in Sheffield will contribute to the fundraiser by preparing one of their specialty soups.

Chef Monika Sudakov from the Chestnut Street Inn will be making squash soup; Z Best chef Eran Salzmann will prepare creamy potato and leek soup; Chef Meagan Couch from Red’s Bar and Grill will feature her stuffed green pepper soup; and Belluccios will provide homemade bread to accompany the soup.

In addition, a variety of other soups will be made by the library board trustees and librarians including, chicken noodle, broccoli-cheese, chili and sausage/corn chowder.

The cost of the supper which includes up to two bowls of soup, bread, crackers, dessert and drink will be $6.50 for adults.

The cost for children 8 and under will be $3.

Containers for take-out will be provided.

The kids will also receive a complimentary “goody bag” including some fun Halloween prizes and treats.

In addition, door prizes will be given out each half hour throughout the event.

Annual Burgoo Festival is set for Oct. 8-9 NORTH UTICA — The LaSalle County Historical Society’s annual Burgoo Festival is set for Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 8-9, in North Utica. This year marks the 47th anniversary of this event, making it one of the largest, long-running pioneer festivals in the state of Illinois.

The festival’s signature dish is Burgoo Stew, a pioneer dish consisting of beef, chicken, pork and vegetables, which is cooked over an open fire throughout the night and served to festival attendees.

Local chef Mike Ellerbrock returns as this year’s Burgoo Meister.

The festivities begin on Saturday at 11 a.m., when the Canal Market opens featuring over 100 vendors.

The Utica Fire Department’s Antique Car Show with live music runs from 1 to 7 p.m.

The events continue on Sunday when 375 plus vendors line the streets of Utica from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Trivia Night fundraiser to help Bender family LADD — A trivia night fundraiser to help defray the medical costs for Aaron and Kate Bender will be held Saturday, Oct. 8, at the Ladd Community Center, 303 S. Central Ave., in Ladd.

Aaron has a rare genetic disease called GATA2.

The fundraiser will help with the mounting medical bills associated with his treatment.

Doors open at 5 p.m.; food, drinks and alcohol will begin being served at this time.

Trivia begins at 7 p.m.

Each trivia table costs $100 with a limit of 10 people on each team. There will also be a silent auction and raffle items throughout the evening. Organizers will sell 50/50 tickets during the event.

A bone marrow registry drive will be ongoing all evening.

The public is welcome to attend. Those who do not want to participate in the trivia night are still welcome to come to eat and drink, while bidding on the auction items, participate in the raffles and watch the festivities.

IVCC fundraiser

LADD — The IVCC women’s basketball team will hold a fundraiser from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 at Rip’s Chicken, Route 89, 311 N. Main, Ladd. Cost is $9 per ticket, which includes 1/4 chicken or chicken strips and French fries. Drinks are not included. IVCC baseball clinic

OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College will host its Fall Instructional Basketball Clinic for boys ages 8-13 Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 15-16 in the gym.

The clinic will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. both days and will cover ball handling, shooting, defensive fundamentals (footwork and positioning) and offensive fundamentals such as proper screening and footwork and cutting.

Participants will interact with members of the 2016-17 men’s team, head coach Chris Herman and assistant Justin Jacobson.

Halloween Hustle 5K

LADD — Ladd Community Consolidated Grade School will host its Halloween Hustle 5K Saturday, Oct. 29, at 9 a.m.

Entry fee is $20 if received by Oct. 19 and $25 after. Awards will be given to the overall top runners and top male and females in each age group, as well as best youth and adult costumes.

Their winner will advance to play top-seeded Newark at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11. The late semifinal pits No. 4 Somonauk vs. No. 6 Rock Island Alleman at 6:30 p.m.

The regional finals is set for 11 a.m.

Saturday, Oct. 15. The winner of the Princeton regional will advance to the Chillicothe IVC Sectional to face the Normal U-High Regional winner at 7 p.m.

Santas on the run

SPRING VALLEY — The Santas on the Run 5K will be Saturday, Nov. 26, to benefit the Hall Township Food Pantry. Reg-

istration will be from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. at the JFK School, 800 N. Richards St., Spring Valley. Race time is 10 a.m. from the JFK parking lot.

Entry fee is $25 postmarked by Nov. 16, $30 through and including race day.

Awards will be given to the overall top runners and top two finishers in each age group. Water stops will include cookies and holiday treats with hot chocolate after the race.

Fall Trout Season

SPRINGFIELD – The 2016 Illinois Fall Trout Fishing Season will open on Saturday, Oct. 15, at 53 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.

Locally, anglers may fish in Bureau County at the Hennepin Canal Parkway.

Two weeks prior to the fall trout opener, the Fall Catch-and-Release Fly Fishing-only Season will open at nine sites on Saturday, Oct. 1. Fly fishing anglers can use fly fishing gear to catch and release trout beginning Oct. 1 at those nine sites.

No trout may be kept during the fly fishing-only period, but anglers can keep trout after the opening of the regular fall trout season beginning Oct. 15.

The Illinois catchable trout program is funded entirely by those who use the program through the sale of Inland Trout Stamps. The IDNR stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the fall season.

No trout may be taken from any of the stocked sites from Oct. 1 until the fall trout season opens at 5 a.m. Oct.15. Anyone attempting to take (harvest) trout before the legal harvest season opening will be issued citations.

All anglers – including those using fly fishing gear who intend to release fish caught before Oct. 15 – must have a valid fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout.

Illinois fishing licenses and Inland Trout Stamps are available at DNR Direct license and permit locations, including many bait shops, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. For a location near you, check the IDNR website at this link: http://dnr.illinois.gov/DNRDirectMonitor/VendorListing.aspx.

Fishing licenses and trout stamps can also be purchased by using a credit card through DNR Direct online via the IDNR website at www.dnr.illinois.gov, or by calling DNR Direct toll-free at 1-888-6PERMIT (1-888-673-7648).

Not all fall trout sites open at 5 a.m. on opening day. Anglers are reminded to check the opening time of their favorite trout fishing location prior to the season.

For more information about all site regulations, anglers should contact individual sites that will be stocked with catchable-size trout.
