With flu season upon us, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends residents get flu shots to prevent the spread of influenza. Most at risk are children younger than 5, but especially children younger than 2 years old, adults 65 years of age and older, pregnant women, people of any age with certain chronic medical conditions, people who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities and people who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu. This Week The Sheffield Historical Society will host a healthy fall cooking class at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 1, at the Sheffield Community Center, 121 S. Church St., Sheffield. Chef Monika Sudakov from the Chestnut Street Inn will share her expertise on some healthy fall cooking. The cost is $30 per person and includes samples and recipes. Utica’s inaugural Angel of HopeFest is Oct.5 The Hampshire Colony Church in Princeton will host its annual chicken and biscuit dinner from 4:45 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 8. Carry-outs will start at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults, $3 for children under 12 (half portion). The church is at 604 S. Church St. and is handicapped accessible.

Upcoming The Wyanet Library Board will again sponsor a walk in the Forest Hill Cemetery on Thursday, Oct. 9, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public. Those participating are encouraged to wear practical shoes and come with a flashlight, and to meet at the cannon. Parking will be on the street only, not in the cemetery. The Varna Women’s Club will hold its annual rummage sale at the Varna fire and ambulance building, located just off Route 17 on South Chestnut Street in Varna. The sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Bureau County Senior Center, is offering a “Rules of the Road” review course for all citizens in the Princeton area from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17. The course is free to anyone interested and will be held at the senior center, 16 W. Marion St., Princeton.

A bluegrass, gospel and country music jam will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Friday, Oct. 17, at the First Lutheran Church at 116 N. Pleasant St. in Princeton. Jams will continue the third Friday of each month.

Proceeds from event support cancer research, organizations UTICA — On Oct. 5, downtown Utica will play host to a legendary Chicago blues band, dozens of talented artisans and one very inspiring artist.

In conjunction with the Utica Business Association, August Hill Winery and Relay for Life Team Angels Among Us, the first annual Angel of HopeFest will be held from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 5 in downtown Utica.

Chicago blues band Howard and The White Boys will headline the event after having just launched their new CD at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago. Local acoustic band Big Uproar will open the free event.

John Tyler Dossett, acclaimed disabled artist, will be celebrating a first that day. After 550 paintings in just ten years, Dossett’s work will be featured on an August Hill Winery wine bottle.

“Angel of Hope,” Dossett’s painting in shades of deep pinks, will be the label on a new wine by the same name, created

by Illinois Winemaker of the Year Mark Wenzel and his wife Teri. The Wenzels are continuing with their philanthropic mission by donating a dollar from every bottle sold of Angel of Hope to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life.

Dossett’s sister, Aimee Holland, who is deeply involved in Relay for Life, asked the Wenzels if her Relay team could host a label launch party at August Hill’s Tasting Room. The Tasting Room’s manager, Danna

Stillwell, had a better idea — a block party on Mill Street during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“I am proud of all the wines we make, but the message for this wine is the most important to me,” said Mark Wenzel.

“Angel of Hope is a very nice and unique wine, but what truly makes it special is the charitable cause and the artwork on the label by JT Dossett. I look forward to celebrating the wine, artwork, and Breast Cancer Awareness Month at Utica’s first Angel of HopeFest.”

Artisans from the area will have their work displayed for sale, and the Relay for Life Team Angels Among Us will have a 50/50 and raffle of items, including an art quilt made from Dossett’s paintings. Dossett’s art will also be available for sale, including original acrylic paintings, limited-edition prints and art jewelry. The Illinois Valley Breast Cancer Connection’s Pink Ribbon Club will be on hand to share valuable information about their program. Proceeds from the event benefit Relay for Life.

Blend cake mix, 1 egg and butter; press onto bottom of pan. Beat cream cheese, brown sugar, remaining eggs, pumpkin and dry pudding mix with mixer until blended; pour over crust. Bake 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

Mix whipped topping mix with milk and syrup in large bowl with mixer on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed until mixture forms stiff peaks. Spread onto dessert, sprinkle with cinnamon. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serves 24.

3/4 cup butter, softened 1 1/2 cups sugar 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 15-ounce can solid pack pumpkin 1 cup semisweet chocolate chips 2 1-ounce squares unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled 3/4 cup finely chopped pecans, divided In a large mixing bowl, cream butter and sugars until light and fluffy.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and cinnamon; add to the creamed mixture alternately with pumpkin. Fold in the chocolate chips. Divide batter in half. Stir melted chocolate into one portion.

In a well greased 10-inch fluted tube pan, sprinkle 1/2 cup pecans. Spoon chocolate batter over pecans, top with pumpkin batter. Sprinkle with remaining pecans. Bake at 325° for 65 to 70 minutes or until a toothpick

SPRING VALLEY — Tuesday, Oct. 14, the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library will host juggler and stilt-walker Jason Kollum at 6 p.m. in the children’s library.

During the first part of the program Kollum performs for the audience, but the last part of the show is where he gives children a chance to learn how to juggle. Kollum offers fantastic, free entertainment

for adults and children of all ages. The program is partially supported by a grant from the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The library encourages the public to support the Illinois Valley Arts Trust, so more programs may be offered to enrich the community through cultural events.

The library has also purchased and received over 270 young adult books from a grant from the Illinois State Library. These books are on the shelf waiting to be checked out. Some authors who were part of the grant are Meg Cabot, Elsie Chapman, Rebecca Hahn, D.J. MacHale, Rebekah Purdy and Elin Hopkins, as well as many more.

TISKILWA — Upcoming events at the Tiskilwa Public Library include a children’s story hour from 2 to 3 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 13. All ages welcome.

Also, on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Lynne Weber and Mary Ellen Dugosh will give a women’s health presentation on ovarian cancer. The program will be held at 6:30 p.m. in the community room at the library. Prizes, refreshments and lots of information will be provided.

OHIO — Monday, Oct. 6, at 4 p.m. the Bureau County Extension will present the program, “Rocket to the Rescue” in celebration of National Youth Science Day. Individuals who attend will take part in a hands-on activity that ends with building and launching a rocket. Stop by the library and sign up today.

Also, the library was chosen as a recipient of the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Eliminate the Digital Divide Program and received $16,000 to facilitate digital awareness and training in the community.

The library has received most of its technology equipment and is going to start formal training sessions, which will be available at least 12 hours per week.

The library will offer classes on common programs like Word and Excel, Internet safety and use, Windows 7 and 8, basic PC awareness, resumé construction and more. Stop by the library

To help increase outreach, the library will offer courses at Ohio Public Schools on certain evenings when the library is closed.

Also, the library will be selling butter braids as a fundraiser. Orders can be placed at the library or with any library board member. Order are due Nov. 6.

WYANET — The Wyanet Library offers a computer class at 1 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month.

Stir-crazy ain’t the word for it ...

You know how it is when you want a book, but not the whole book? That’s when you reach for this: with its 10 short stories, “Shots Fired” will just fill that nagging want-to-read hunger.

And yet, what’s nice about this book is that you can make it last. Most of author C.J. Box’s tales are short enough to read

in one sitting, but not so involved that you won’t feel bad putting a bookmark in them for a minute.

And that’s about how long you’ll need a bookmark — a minute — because these mystery-western-human-interest tales are awfully addicting.

If you’re a Box fan, this is a must-have. If you’ve never read his works, you’ll be a fan in short order because what’s inside “Shots Fired” will have you stuck to your seat.

‘Shots Fired’ You’re stuck.

Trapped in an elevator, office, front seat of a car, wishing you were someplace, any place else. The people with you are getting on your last nerve.

You’ve heard the same phrases over and over and over, and you want to scream.

We’ve all been there.

We’ve all lived through the irritation, but what’s funny is that it’s not at all chafing to read about it happening to someone else. And that’s just one of the themes in “Shots Fired,” a book of short stories by C.J. Box. Throughout the years, says Box, fans have asked

where they could find some of his shorter works, wondering why there wasn’t an anthology.

Now there is with favorite characters and a few new faces.

Etcetera Lady Lions fundraiser LAMOILLE — The LaMoille/Ohio girls basketball program will hold an all-youcan-eat pancake and sausage breakfast fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Oct. 12 at he LaMoille Lions Club, located at 308 Howard St. in LaMoille.

There will be a bake sale, raffles and a 50/50.

The cost is $6 for adults, $4 for children ages 4-10 and free for children 4 and under.

PRINCETON — The Princeton Park District will offer a youth basketball clinic at the Bureau County Metro Center for Grades 1-6 meeting on Saturdays. The clinic is designed for everyone from the beginner to players looking to improve their skills. Instructors will include current PHS players.

The Park District’s youth basketball league from Grades 1-6 will be held Saturday mornings, running Nov. 1 through Dec. 6. Emphasis will be on teamwork and sportsmanship.

Pat Corwin was elected chairperson, with Beth Van Vooren as vice chairperson, Deb Bowen as secretary and Karen Taylor treasurer.

Awards were then presented.

Ringers scores went to Marcia Hix for the front 9, improving her score by 20 and Deb Zenger for the back 9 improving her score by 22.

Scratch skins went to Kathy Lanham and Karen Taylor with handicap skins going to Sandy “Mark” Crosby and Dorine Motley.

The memorial tournament winners were Margy Palmer and Karen Taylor.

Handicap tournament winners were Beth VanVooren, first, and Patsy DeFauw, second.

Most improved went Beth VanVooren, with Luanne Coppejans second and Diane Walker third.

Most birdies during league went to Karen Taylor with 6. Kathy Lanham placed second with 4.

Best 18 hole round not combined went to Karen Taylor with a 78 with Patsy DeFauw second with 83 and Sandy “John” Crosby with a 84.

Beth VanVooren played the most rounds with 94, followed by Carlene Hebel and Dorine Motley with 43, Kathy Lanham with 41.

There were 22 ladies receiving birdie markers this year.
