It’s that time ...

With the corn and beans drying nicely in the late summer/early fall heat, farm machinery in and around the county can be seen from sunup through long after the sun goes down. While it’s no secret motorists need to share the road with the often over-sized farm machinery, it’s important drivers of both vehicles observe good sound safety practices and use a good share of common sense. Motorists should remember a slow-moving piece of farm equipment can not stop quickly, and oftentimes, they can only get so far off the roadway to allow faster vehicles to pass because of obstacles in the ditch and driveways. Many websites say patience could be a life-saving virtue when it comes to sharing the roadways at this time of year. Likewise, those behind the wheels of farm equipment should remember to make sure all directional signals are working properly and to follow all guidelines for driving the large equipment on highways and other roads. Many websites also suggest drivers of the large equipment attempt to pull over in a safe place if the line of vehicles behind is growing long. If everyone observes safety and patience, the area will have a safe and bountiful harvest.

“Rural Route Comedy Show” to benefit Relay for Life

A “Rural Route Comedy Show,” sponsored by the Hennepin Relay for Life team of the American Cancer Society, will be at 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10, at the Spring Valley Boat Club. Pie and coffee in Cherry A pie and coffee social hour will be from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Cherry Church Hall.

Fall Bunco party

The United Church of Christ in Granville will host its fall Bunco party on Friday, Oct. 2. Doors open at 6 p.m. and games begin at 7 p.m. There will be lots of good food, a 50/50, raffles and the lottery tree.

Exploring the Land of Lincoln

Sauk Valley Community College will take a trip to Springfield to explore the Land of Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 3. The bus will depart promptly from the East Mall parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and return at 9:30 p.m. The first stop will be the Lincoln Home.

Then the group will have lunch before heading to the Lincoln Tomb. The final stop of the Lincoln tour will be the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum.

On the way home, the group will stop for dinner at a fast food restaurant. The cost is $55 per person, and it includes a ticket to the museum. Register by calling SVCC’s Community Education office at 815835-6212.

IVCC Wind Ensemble concert

The Illinois Valley Community College Wind Ensemble, directed by Gene Montgomery, will offer a free concert at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 4, in the IVCC Cultural Centre. Selections to be performed include the music of Monterde, Jager, Benscriscutto, Morricone, Marquina, Nestico, Anderson, Benjamin and Broadway tunes from 1934 through 1959. The ensemble includes IVCC students, local and regional music educators and community members dedicated to the promotion of quality wind and percussion music. In addition to on-campus concerts, the ensemble also performs at community festivals and events and works with other universities and community bands in joint concerts.

Covered Bridge Chorus concert

The Covered Bridge Chorus will present their annual show at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24, at the Christ Community Church, 1719 S. Euclid Ave., Princeton. The guest quartet is the “Convertibles” and a group from Princeton High School will also perform. This year show is titled “Doo Wop meets Barbershop.” Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. EMT-Basic course at Perry Memorial

Perry Memorial Hospital is offering the EMT-Basic course beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27, and continue to mid-late February with the state exam to follow.

All candidates must be 18 years old or older and hold a high school diploma or have a high school equivalency certificate. Members of OSF Northern Region EMS will be charged $450. Non-members of the OSF Northern Region EMS taking the course will be required to pay $500. Payment can be made by check, money order or credit card and is due at the time of registration. Jesse White urges student readers to enter ‘Letters About Literature’ competition SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in Grades 4 through 12 to enter the 2016 “Letters About Literature” contest — a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book.

“Letters About Literature” invites students to read a book, poem or play of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the work changed their life or view of the world. Students can enter on their own or through their schools, libraries or other youth organizations.

“Every year thousands of students in Illinois enjoy participating in this inspiring competition,” said White. “Illinois has had more entries than any other state for eight years in a row. Anyone who has read past letters can see how literature inspires and touches the lives of our young people. I encourage all our students to take part in Letters About Literature, and I hope their participation leads to a lifetime of reading.”

There are three levels of participation: Level I for Grades 4-6, Level II for Grades 7-8 and Level III for Grades 9-12. One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and receive a $200 cash award. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $100 cash award to purchase materials for their school library.

Winners and teachers will be invited to an awards ceremony in Springfield.

The state winners’ letters will be forwarded for national judging. In last year’s competition, Illinois Level III winner, Aidan

Kingwell, a student at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, was selected as the Level III national winner.

Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 5 p.m., the library will hold a book discussion on “The Orphan Train”

by Christina Baker Kline.

The library invites the entire community to

read this book in preparation for the upcoming orphan train program being held at the Tiskilwa Historical Society.

Monday, Oct. 12, at 7 p.m., the library will show a documentary about orphan trains. The informative program will be put on by Angie Snook of Geneseo, who will be the program speaker.

There will also be a few books for younger children about the orphan trains.

OHIO — Wednesday, Oct. 7, at 3:45 p.m., Bureau County Extension will visit the library for the program, Motion-Commotion.

Participants will get to take part in experiments that look at energy and motion.

Monday, Oct. 19, from 11 to 12:30 p.m., Bureau County Health Department will be at the library to offer a flu shot clinic.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is hosting Rocket Readers!

This club uses computer games, activities and story time to encourage elementary students to improve their reading skills. The club is open to elementary students in second through fifth grades. The club meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library announced the availability of Baker & Taylor’s All-In-One Axis 360 mobile app for patrons.

The new app provides Apple, Android and Windows Desktop users the ability to download and read eBooks or listen to digital audio books within the app.

The app provides single sign-on, eliminating the needs for Adobe IDs, additional apps and credentials. Users link to their home library, search or browse their favorite topics and enjoy reading or listening with the app. Axis 360 also

presents recommendations from the library’s collection, based on the user’s selection.

Want to share a recipe?

You can use vegetables that are fresh or frozen to get some different side dishes to go along with your main dish. Right now you have an abundance of fresh veggies, and the farmers’ markets always have a good supply of fresh veggies too.

Country Style Tomatoes 4 large tomatoes 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup minced fresh parsley 1 1/2 minced fresh basil or 1/2 teaspoon dried basil 1 garlic clove, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup Panko (Japanese) bread crumbs 1 egg 1 tablespoon milk 3 tablespoons butter 3 tablespoons olive oil Cut each tomato into 4 thick slices. Place on paper towels to drain. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, beat the cream cheese, parsley, basil, garlic and salt until blended. Spread cream cheese mixture over eight tomato slices. Top with reaming tomato slices. Place flour and bread crumbs in separate shallow bowls.

In another bowl, whisk egg and milk. Coat the top and bottom of each sandwich with flour. Dip into egg mixture. Then coat with crumbs. In a large skillet, heat butter and oil over medium hot heat. Fry tomato sandwiches in batches, for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels.

Serve immediately.

Zucchini ‘N’ Corn Sauce 1 small zucchini 1/2 medium sweet red or green peppers, julienned 1 tablespoon canola oil

1/3 cup fresh or frozen corn 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning Sauté zucchini and red pepper in oil in a small skillet for 3 to 4 minutes or until crisp tender. Add the corn, garlic salt and Italian seasoning, sauté 3 to 4 minutes longer or until corn is tender.

Creamy Corn Chowder 4 baking potatoes 1 onion 2 large peeled carrots 1 green ball pepper 1 pound frozen corn 6 cups water 3 2.5 gluten free bouillon cubes (vegetable, chicken or beef) 1 cup milk or non-dairy alternative such as unsweetened almond milk Freshly ground black pepper to taste Coarsely chop all vegetables, except corn. Combine all ingredients, except milk and pepper, in a large stockpot. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer 1/2 hour or until veggies are tender. Remove 5 cups of soup from pot and blend until smooth in a blender. Return to pot. Stir in milk and pepper to taste.

Heat before serving.

Texas Corn Casserole 6 tablespoons butter, melted plus more for greasing pan 1 14 3/4-ounces can whole kernel corn 1 14 3/4-ounce can cream style corn 1 7-ounce box cornbread mix, preferably Martha White Sweet Yellow cornbread & Muffin Mix 6 scallions, white and green parts, finely chopped 2 large eggs

1/2 green pepper, seeded and diced 1 1/2 teaspoons Creole seasoning plus more to sprinkle on top Preheat oven to 400. Meanwhile, butter a 9-by-13inch baking dish and set aside. In a large bowl, combine all ingredients. Transfer batter to prepared pan.

Sprinkle top with Creole seasoning. Bake casserole until golden brown and bubbly, about 45 minutes.

Crispy Topped Carrot and Broccoli Bake 4 cups broccoli florets 1 1/2 pound carrots, peeled and diagonally cut into 1/2-inch thick slices 2/3 cup Kraft Real Mayo Mayonnaise 1/4 cup flour 1 teaspoon garlic powder 2 cups milk 1/3 cup Kraft grated Parmesan cheese 1 cup Kraft shredded Italian five cheese blend 1 6-ounce package Stove Top stuffing mix for chicken Heat oven to 375°. Cook veggies in boiling water in medium saucepan for 3 minutes or until crisp tender; drain. Place in a 13-by- 9-inch baking dish sprayed with cooking spray. Whisk mayo, flour and garlic powder in same saucepan until blended. Gradually stir in milk, cook on medium heat 3 to 5 minuets or until sauce comes to boil and is thickened, stirring frequently. Stir in Parmesan. Pour over vegetables. Top with shredded cheese. Prepare stuffing as directed on package. Spoon over cheese. Bake 35 minutes or until heated through.

Lincoln’s New Salem has candlelight tours PETERSBURG, Ill. – Explore Lincoln’s New Salem after dark, a place of warm campfires, flickering candles and swirling glow sticks. Fireplaces and lanterns will light the log buildings of this re-created 1830s village during the annual Candlelight Walk on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 2-4, from 7 to 9 p.m. Outside, musicians will play next to campfires, and a blacksmith will shape metal by the light of his forge.

Many visitors will carry glow sticks, filling the air with green, red and blue streaks.

The free event is sponsored by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency and the New Salem Lincoln League. The Candlelight Walk offers the only opportunity to see the village at night. The event will be canceled only in the event of severe weather.

Live music in the village will be provided by The Prairie Aires on Friday and Sunday and by the Wildwood Strings on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In addition, musicians will perform on traditional

‘Ghosts of Ottawa past’ guided tour

instruments such as harps and dulcimers throughout the village.

Staff and volunteers in period clothing will be inside many of the village’s log homes and shops to talk about life in 19th century Illinois.

Gingerbread and cider will be served in the Rutledge Tavern. OMGosh! Bistro at New Salem will be open from 9 a.m. to 10 p.m. all three days.

The museum store, bookstore and souvenir shop operated by the New Salem Lincoln League will be open, as will the Visitor Center and the New Salem Tradition Exhibit.

Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, administered by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, is located two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield on Route 97.

Tours are free, although a donation of $4 for adults, $2 for children and $10 for families is suggested.

New and different stories set for Oct. 9-10 OTTAWA — On Friday, Oct. 9, and Saturday, Oct. 10, the Reddick Mansion Association will reprise its “Ghosts of Ottawa Past” program with some new and different stories.

The guided tour will begin in the candle-lit Reddick Mansion where participants will encounter a visit from some of the mansion’s previous residents.

The program will also include an approximate half-mile outside walk along Columbus Street.

The tour will stop at the site of the last hanging in LaSalle County

and the location of a murder along the I & M Canal.

During the walk, other famous and infamous ghostly characters from Ottawa’s past may also appear.

Two tours will be given each night: one at 7 p.m. and one at 9 p.m.

After each of the walking tours, the groups will return to the Reddick Mansion where refreshments will be served.

The cost is $10 per person and, due to the subject matter, participants should be at least 12 years old.

For reservations, call the Reddick Mansion at 815-433-6100. Each tour is limited to 20 people, and reservations are strongly suggested.

All money raised from the event will be used for the preservation and renovation of the Reddick Mansion.

The Reddick Mansion, at 100 W. Lafayette St., was built in 1858, and is listed in the National Register of Historic Sites.

It is open to the public for tours and also has meeting/reception rooms available for rent for special events.

QCA offers Spooktacular activities in October Cocoa Beano 5K

The Lagomarcino’s Cocoa Beano 5K Race is great fun for the whole family. It starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24, at Lagomarcino’s, 2132 E. 11th Ave. in the Village of East Davenport.

Register at lagomarcinos.com. This century-old, family-owned soda fountain is famous for hot fudge sundaes, hand-dipped chocolates, and sponge candy. The long-time facility also offers a full menu.

OGLESBY — A 5K Run/Walk is starting up in memory of Connie Dzierzynski Skerston, who passed away unexpectedly from a brain aneurysm in March at the age of 45. A scholarship has been founded in her name at IVCC, where she served in administration.

L-P Cavalier 5K

LASALLE — The L-P Cavalier 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday,

Oct. 10, starting at 8:30 a.m. at the L-P Clock Tower. The finish line will be at Howard Fellows Stadium. Registration will start at 8:30 a.m. in the L-P cafeteria.

Pre-registration is $20, and $25 on the day of the race. There is a family package (three or more) of $50. L-P students, staff and faculty are $15. Registration fees may be sent to L-P High School/ Attn: 5K Entry, 541 Chartes St., LaSalle, IL., 61301.

All proceeds to benefit the L-P Foundation, an organization that supports the advancement of educational opportunities and programs for the students of L-P.

Halloween Hustle 5K

LADD — The Halloween Hustle 5K will be Saturday, Oct. 24, at Ladd School. The race will start at 9 a.m. Packet pick-up and registration will be from 8 to 8:45 a.m.

Fee is $20 if registered by Oct.16, and $25 for ages 14 and up. Entry fee is $10 for ages 13 and under.

Donations are accepted. All proceeds to benefit the students of Ladd CCSD No. 94.

Canal Connection

Defender Dash

UTICA — The Canal Connection 10K will be Sunday, Nov. 1, starting at 10:30 a.m. Registration will take place at Waltham School in Utica starting at 8 a.m. and end at 10 a.m. All runners must register in Utica.

Busses will begin to leave Utica at 8:30 a.m. to transport runners to the starting line at L-P High School near the west end of the I-M Canal Towpath.

A bag will be provided with your race packet in which you may secure all possessions for transport back to the finish line.

The 10K is race No. 19 on the Starved Rock Runners Circuit.

The course features a downhill slope for the first .75 mile stretch.

Runners will then enter the I-M Canal Towpath and run the next 4.2 miles on a flat, unpaved surface featuring rock formations and autumn scenery. The race will finish on a paved street near the Waltham School.

Pre-registration by mail through Oct. 27 is $25 and $32 after. Online registration is available at www.runrace.net and www.starvedrockrunners.org.

STREATOR — The Defender Dash 5K and Family Fun Run will be Saturday, Oct. 10, at St. Michael School, 410 S. Park St. in Streator. The fun run starts at 9:30 a.m. with the 5K to follow at 10 a.m. For more information and to register, visit www.defenderdash.weebly.com.

Turkey Trot

OGLESBY— The 37th Oglesby 3-Mile Turkey Trot will be Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, Nov. 26. The race will start at 9 a.m. at Holy Family School.

Each person bringing a non-perishable food donation for the Illinois Food Pantry will receive a free gift.
