Kicks are for kids Fall soccer is in full swing in the Princeton Youth Soccer League. PYSL includes coed divisions for prekindergarten through eighth grade. Matches are played Monday, Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday morning at Zearing Park in Princeton. Players are taught the fundamentals at the lower levels, and games become more competitive as they get older and gain more experience.

All teams in the PYSL are now coed.

While most of the players are from Princeton, some of the children from neighboring towns and villages that don’t offer a soccer program also compete.

Many of the youthful participants you’ll see on the field will go on to play soccer at the high school level.

You don’t have to have a child, grandchild or even a favorite young athlete to enjoy the fun. The public is welcome to attend any and all PYSL games. Bring a lawn chair, maybe a blanket too as the days get cooler, and you’ll find yourself caught up in the fun.

Two lucky winners chosen from county fair contest

PRINCETON — Two Bureau County children earned the opportunity to shop with a cop for a new bike and helmet Wednesday evening.

Eli Coomer of Princeton and Emma Slingsby of Ladd were the winners of BuEComm’s (Bureau Emergency Communications) 911 contest, which is done every year at the Bureau County Fair.

Young children who know their phone number and address get entered into a drawing for a new bike and helmet.

This year’s contest rules changed just a bit, due to the low number of children under the age of 8 last year who could recite their information.

Dawn Porter, 911 public educator at BuEComm, said the low numbers were startling and provided enough proof she needed to teach more about the importance of young children knowing their information in case of emergency.

For the last eight years, Porter has taught students all over Bureau County about the workings of 911 and why it’s crucial they know their information. She said it’s more important than ever these days with everyone dropping their land lines and going to cell phones. Many times

when 911 calls come in from cell phones, BuEComm doesn’t always get an exact location of where the emergency is taking place. Porter said she plans to spend the next year working more persistently in communicating this message to students.

This year, the age requirements for the 911 contest were split into two categories — 7 and under and from 8 to 12 years old. With the change, BuEComm got 14 children under the age of 7 who could tell their phone number and address, and 72 children from the ages of 8 to 12 who knew their information. Coomer was this year’s winner for the 7 years and under category, and Slingsby was the winner for the 8-12 years old group.

During Wednesday’s shopping trip, Bureau County Sheriff Jim Reed and Princeton Police Sgt. Terry Polhemus accompanied the two winners and helped them make the best bike choice, while Porter and Diana Stiles, BuEComm director, helped the children pick out helmets.

While Slingsby just got a new bike for her birthday in June, she is planning to donate the bike and helmet she picked out to another child this Christmas.

Bureau County Sheriff’s Office and Princeton Police Department donated the bikes, and BuEComm donated the helmets to the kids.

PRINCETON — The Prairie Arts Council is pleased to announce its October exhibit “Liquid Conversion,” featuring artist Linda Von Holten.

The exhibit is set to run Oct. 7 through Oct. 30.

An Illinois native, Von Holten has drawn from her rich and varied life experiences to work full time as a creative artist which eventually lead to the forma-

tion of her business, Artwork by LVH, established in 2013. Her current work is primarily in acrylics, traversing a range of surfaces, subjects and styles, including paintings generated as solo pieces, or as parts of a visual series.

Through “Liquid Conversion,” Von Holten puts forth the idea that “As the paint flows, blends and dries

to create change on the surface, it gathers the power to ultimately create change within the viewer.”

An opening night reception is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7, at the Prairie Arts Center.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nom-

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

Tuesday, Oct. 4, the LaSalle Public Library will host a genealogy and history presentation by the Daughters of the American Revolution.

In this program, audience members will explore the world of genealogy and find out how to trace family ancestry – sometimes all

the way back to the American Revolution. This program provides information on how to best search public records and explore personal histories, and will include useful tips to follow clues that link to Revolutionary Patriot ancestors.

In addition to genealogical research, the DAR presenters will share their own

stories about finding and learning about their patriot ancestors. Learn the strategies they used to reveal the historic connections.

St. Margaret’s Health activities Mom’s Special Helper Sibling Class St. Margaret’s will hold a Mom’s Special Helper Sibling Class for soon-to-be big brothers and sisters 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, in Room 309 on the third floor of the hospital.

The class will be conducted through the use of a video, demonstrations and storybook readings. A tour of the Family Birthing Centre will be provided, and participants will receive refreshments, certificates, a gift bag and souvenir handouts. Health Care Provider CPR course St. Margaret’s will host a Health Care Provider CPR” course from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4. The class is for any health care professionals – including lifeguards, firefighters, health care workers, etc. – who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills in a variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Parkinson’s Support Group St. Margaret’s support group for persons affected by Parkinson’s disease will meet at 1:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3, in the hospital’s First Floor Presentation Room. This month’s speaker is Beth Wallace, St. Margaret’s audiologist. She will address hearing problems and loss that may, or may not, be associated with Parkinson’s disease. A question and answer session will follow.

The support group offers emotional support, socialization and an opportunity to share information with others who are affected by Parkinson’s disease. PMH introduces new emergency medicine group PRINCETON— Perry Memorial Hospital is announcing a new Emergency Medicine Group for its Emergency Department: Princeton Emergency Medicine Specialists (PEMS).

PEMS is owned and operated by Dr. Neal Edelson and Dr. John Timmons. They have hired five full-time providers. Dr. Eric Castro, Dr. Andrew Harris, Dr. Len Kaczororwski and Dr. Rick Cernovich will join Dr. Edelson and Dr. Timmons to provide emergency physician care at Perry Memorial Hospital. Several parttime physicians have also been retained to help with occasional shifts and back up. All

physicians are or will be emergency medicine board certified. Dr. Neal Edelsen is the onsite medical director for the Emergency Department.

Dr. Edelsen attended medical school at the Chicago Medical School Finch University of Health Sciences in North Chicago. He completed an internship and residency program at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Richmond Heights, Ohio. He is board certified in emergency medicine and previously practiced emergency medicine in the Chicago area.

Dr. Timmons received his medical degree at Rush Medical College in Chicago. He completed an internship at Rush University Medical Center

and residency program at Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Medical Center. He is board certified in emergency medicine.

Dr. Timmons’ group also provides emergency services at Carle-Hoopeston Hospital where the ED staff there has recently earned the Press Ganey “Guardian of Excellence Award” for 95 percentile top box patient satisfaction scores for four consecutive quarters.

IVCC offers pharmacy technician program OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College’s Continuing Education Office is offering a pharmacy technician (CCE-1720-300) program Mondays and Wednesdays Oct. 10 through Nov. 30.

The 50-hour program will prepare students to work as a pharmacy technician in a retail or other pharmacy setting and to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board’s PTCB exam.

Topics include pharmacy medical terminology, history of pharmacy, pharmacy practice in multiple environments, pharmacy calculations and measurements, reading and interpreting prescriptions and defining drugs by generic and brand names.

In addition to classroom lecture and

labs, the program includes a clinical externship through a local pharmacy. To be eligible for the externship, students must successfully complete the 50-hour program, submit to a thorough background check, drug screening and meet other requirements.

A prerequisite for this program is either a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate plus a solid background in math.

Registration deadline is Oct. 3. Cost is $1,199 and includes a textbook and materials. Cost of PTCB exam is not included in the course fee.

Walk to Remember is Oct. 2 PERU — The River Valley Chapter of The Compassionate Friends invites bereaved parents, siblings, relatives and friends to join them at their Walk to Remember at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 2, at the east end of Baker Lake in Peru. The cost to walk once around the

lake is $10, under 10 free.

Refreshments and activities are planned.

Educational endeavors New agent training for Mission Possible Kids

Dixon Quarter Mania set for Sept. 30

PRINCETON — The First United Methodist Church in Princeton will host a kickoff and new agent training for Mission Possible Kids at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 5, for children in first through fifth grades.

At this event, children will register for the program, learn how to become secret agents, play fun games and have a snack.

At Mission Possible Kids, children become special agents and change the world through local and global mission projects.

Since October 2014, Mission Possible Kids at the First United Methodist Church have completed 27 missions and changed more than 1,700 lives. The program runs from October to April and meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month from 6 to 7 p.m. For more information, call the church at 815-872-2821.

DIXON — Dixon Quarter Mania announced the Friday, Sept. 30 event at the Dixon Elks Lodge will support the Morning Star Christian Pre-School. The doors open to the public at 5 p.m.; dinner is available; the event takes place from 7to 9 p.m.

Morning Star Christian Pre-School is a nonprofit organization that is needing a little help from the community to keep the organization up and running for young children.

Dixon Quarter Mania is a group of direct sales leaders, crafters and local businesses who hold regular Quarter Mania events in Dixon. Each Quarter Mania event supports a charitable organization.

A Quarter Mania event is a cross between an auction, a raffle and a vendor show all wrapped into one. New and discontinued items from local vendors will be auctioned off for one to four quarters per item. Vendors will also have cash and carry items available for sale, and food and beverages are available for purchase. There will also be a 50/50 raffle with tickets available for purchase the evening of the event, donated to the school.

Ticket prices are: 1 ticket for $1, 6 tickets for $5, and 15 tickets for $10. More information can be found online at www.dixonquartermania.com.

At Quarter Mania, each item up for bid will be displayed for all guests to see. The auctioneer then gives a brief description, retail value and how many quarters you will need to bid. Guests will give their bid (quarters) and hold up their numbered paddle.

The numbered paddles sell for: 1 paddle for $5, 2 paddles for $8, and 3 paddles for $10.

If you have more than one paddle, you may place a bid for each one. When all bids are collected, a number will be randomly selected. If the number on the paddle matches the number drawn, the guest wins that item. If a matching numbered paddle is not held up, the auctioneer will tries again.

Walnut Rotary to hear about 21st Century Grant

WALNUT – Walnut Rotary Club President Charlie Gonigam has announced that Adam Weidner will be addressing the club on Wednesday, Oct. 5.

“Adam is the Site Coordinator for the 21st Century Community Learning Center for the Ohio School District,” said Gonigam. “The before/after school program is a grant-funded program, provided in partnership between Ohio schools and the Bureau, Henry and Stark County Regional Office of Education. It provides students with homework assistance and enrichment activities, all designed to improve the children’s educational experience.”

Fall Trout Season

SPRINGFIELD – The 2016 Illinois Fall Trout Fishing Season will open on Saturday, Oct. 15,

at 53 ponds, lakes and streams throughout the state.

Locally, anglers may fish in Bureau County at the Hennepin Canal Parkway.

Two weeks prior to the fall trout opener, the Fall Catch-andRelease Fly Fishing-only Season will open at nine sites on Saturday, Oct. 1. Fly fishing anglers can use fly fishing gear to catch and release trout beginning Oct. 1 at those nine sites. No trout may be kept during the fly fishing-only period, but anglers can keep trout after the opening of the regular fall trout season beginning Oct. 15.

The Illinois catchable trout program is funded entirely by those who use the program through the sale of Inland Trout Stamps. The IDNR stocks more than 80,000 rainbow trout each year in bodies of water where trout fishing is permitted during the fall season.

No trout may be taken from any of the stocked sites from Oct. 1 until the fall trout season opens at 5 a.m. Oct.15. Anyone attempting to take (harvest) trout before the legal harvest season opening will be issued citations.

All anglers – including those using fly fishing gear who intend to release fish caught before Oct. 15 – must have a valid fishing license and an Inland Trout Stamp, unless they are under the age of 16, blind or disabled, or are

an Illinois resident on leave from active duty in the Armed Forces. The daily catch limit for each angler is five trout.

Illinois fishing licenses and Inland Trout Stamps are available at DNR Direct license and permit locations, including many bait shops, sporting goods stores and other retail outlets. Not all fall trout sites open at 5 a.m. on opening day. Anglers are reminded to check the opening time of their favorite trout fishing location prior to the season.

For more information about all site regulations, anglers should contact individual sites that will be stocked with catchable-size trout.

Dzierzynski Skerston 5K

OGLESBY — IVCC will host its second annual Connie Dzierzynski Skerston Scholarship 5K at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 8.

Participants can run or walk a 5K or do an untimed, 1.5 mile

“Walk in her Steps” course that mirrors Connie’s personal route. To date, $32,000 has been raised and recipients of the $1,000 award have shown a passion for volunteerism and community service. Heather McCutcheon of Ladd, a nursing student, won the first Connie Dzierzynski Skerston Memorial Scholarship in 2015, and Rick Cook of Ottawa, a finance major, is the 2016 winner.

The entry fee is $25 if received by Oct. 1 and $30 after that date. There are several age divisions for men and women.

Early packet pickup will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 6, near the college’s main entrance, and race day registration is from 8 to 9:30 a.m.

Participants will receive a T-shirt, water and light snacks.

Music will be provided by Hit Squad Disc Jockeys.
