Princeton gallery to showcase spiritually inspired paintings Opening reception set for Oct. 6 PRINCETON — Paintings by local artist Jack Olson will be on display at the October gallery exhibit at Princeton’s Prairie Arts Center.

There will be an opening reception, free to the public, from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 6, at the Prairie Arts Center, 24 Park Ave. East in Princeton. The show will continue in the PAC gallery on Saturdays and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. throughout October.

Olson, who makes a living as a circuit board designer for Caterpillar, enjoys drawing and painting in his spare time. In addition, he works closely with other local artists in his capacity as the PAC gallery director. He said, “It doesn’t seem too long ago that I was sitting around the kitchen table with my children, sharing their crayons and coloring books.”

From there, his growing spirituality led him to exploring biblical themes and images through acrylic paintings.

“After I became a Christian and started to explore the Bible, images related to scripture began coming into my mind almost immediately,” Olson said.

“I began thinking that if I was going to spend so much time on art, it should be meaningful to my life.”

Titled “Scrisual Arts,” Olson’s exhibition explores themes ranging from faith and revelation to harvest and resurrection. He will be on hand at the Oct. 6 reception and welcomes all questions, comments and suggestions.

Princeton Library Health Happens Expo - 10/14

Hike for a Cure and Angel of Hope Fest set for Oct. 1 UTICA — Starved Rock Lodge and downtown Utica restaurants and merchants will be teaming up for two fundraising events on Sunday, Oct. 1.

“The purpose of both events is to celebrate breast cancer survivors, help those in the fight and remember those we’ve lost,” said Aimee Holland of the Relay for Life team that works with the Utica Business Association.

The Lodge will host “Hike for a Cure” from 9 to 11 a.m. There will be four guided hikes (9, 9:30, 10 and 10:30 a.m.) or participants may hike on their own. Once registered, each hiker will get a pink “Hike for a Cure” T-shirt and an engraved HOPE stone to carry with them as they depart from the Back Door Lounge and hike to the top

of Starved Rock and back to the Lodge. A light breakfast will also be provided for participants.

Recognizing first responders

Red chair makes stop in area Chestnut Street Inn hosts travel icon SHEFFIELD — Where travelers once held photos of Flat Stanley in unusual places, photographers now shoot photos of a humbler chair. Long considered simply a place to rest after a long day, the lowly wooden chair has been elevated to celebrity status and is being welcomed at inns and B&Bs throughout America.

It’s all part of a multiyear B&B awareness program that focuses on a traveling red porch chair to highlight the comfort, hospitality and friendliness of bed and breakfasts.

Since its start in New England in 2012, B&Bs and inns have taken inspiring photos of the red chair from beaches to bandstands.

Thanks to a partnership with BedandBreakfast. com, the red chair is making its way across the United States, bringing attention to B&Bs and beautiful travel destinations. It traveled along the East Coast and Southern states in 2014, spent 2015 touring the West Coast, in 2016 Red went international by venturing through Canada all the way to Alaska, and 2017 will be the year of the Midwest. Participating B&Bs and inns listed on BedandBreakfast.com host the red chair, chronicling its stay with blog posts and photos on www.

Bed and Breakfast Association -illinoisbnb.com) the chair is making its way to Sheffield and the Chestnut Street Inn. Look for innkeepers Jeff and Monika Sudakov shooting images of the red chair at the Chestnut Street Inn as well as the scenic attractions in the areas surrounding Princeton.

It all started in Winter 2012 with a single image.

WoodsHole Inn innkeeper Beth Colt posted a picture on Facebook of her simple red chair perched on the ice behind her house and watched her page light up with “likes.” The picture was shared on the Facebook page of a nature photographer from California, who was inspired by the image to visit the Woods Hole Inn and took an amazing second photo of the chair on a local beach.

Throughout 2012 and early 2013, the red chair developed a personality of its own being photographed by innkeepers in communities from one end of New England to the other. Starting in Cape Cod, the red chair journeyed throughout the six New England states on a nine-month tour.

“This chair is the little engine that could,” said Colt. “I could never have imagined that it would travel so far, to every corner of America, all on the kindness and hospitality of innkeepers. It’s a barn-raising of sorts; the sharing of a piece of Americana.”

Princeton Elks Lodge will sponsor free orthopedic assessment clinic PRINCETON — Princeton Elks Lodge 1461, in cooperation with the Illinois Elks Children’s Care Corporation, will sponsor a free children’s orthopedic assessment clinic on Thursday, Oct. 12. The clinic is from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m. and is by appointment only. To make an appointment, call the Illinois Elks Children’s Care office at 800-272-0074 between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. There are no charges for any services at this clinic.

The clinic will be at Perry Memorial Hospital, 530 Park Ave. East in Princeton; use the north front door. Dr. Richard Erickson of Carol Stream will be the clinician in charge. No medical referral is necessary for the clinic but physicians are welcome to refer patients to the clinic for a specific reason or second opinion. School nurses are welcome to refer children and families to the clinic.

The Elks Organization has been working with physically challenged children since 1928 and this is one of the 17 clinic locations throughout Illinois. The clinic is an ideal time to have a child reviewed for bone and joint development. If your child has feet pointing out or in who complains

of back, knee, leg, ankle pain or has a back curvature can be seen at this clinic. The Elks will provide financial assistance to their best of their ability for children needing further treatment or specialty equipment when the family

lacks sufficient resources to do so. In the past, the Elks have purchased therapy services, corrective shoes, braces, wheelchairs and augmentative communication devices to help children overcome a variety of physical challenges.

STERLING — It’s time once again for area kids to put on their running shoes as the 26th annual Great Pumpkin Dash Cross Country Festival is just around the corner. The Pumpkin Dash, sponsored by CGH Medical Center, the Sterling Park District and Kunes Country Auto Group, will take place on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Hoover Park in Sterling.

On-site registration begins at 9 a.m. and continues throughout the morning. The first race begins at 11 a.m. Please register at least 15 minutes prior to your race.

Participants are grouped by age and run dashes of various lengths throughout the day. The race lengths range from 25-meters for the pee-wees (walkers under the age of 2) to 1,000-meters for 10-, 11- and 12-year-olds.

“The winner of each heat receives a larger pumpkin, but the first 1,000 finishers will receive a small pumpkin from Selmi’s Pumpkin Patch. We just want everyone to come out, get a little exercise and, most importantly, have a lot of fun,” Sterling Park District Director Larry Schuldt said.

Approximate start times for each age group are as follows: 11 a.m. – Pee Wee Race (walkers under the age of 2); 11:15 a.m. – 3 year olds; 11:30 a.m. – 4 and 5 year olds; 12 noon – 6 and 7 year olds; 12:30 p.m.

– 8 and 9 year olds; and 1 p.m. – 10, 11 and 12 year olds.

While the main emphasis of Pumpkin Dash is on the races, there are many other activities, including a petting zoo, bounce houses, hayrack wagon rides, face painting, ambulance tours and pumpkin photos.

“Pumpkin Dash has always been a totally free event for the kids,” said Schuldt. “That’s possible because of the support from all of our sponsors.

CGH Medical Center and the park district have put a lot of money and man-hours into this event over the years and continue to do so. From beginning to end, this is truly a community event.”

Although free to all participants, $1 free-will per person donation will be accepted.

Crossbows allowed SPRINGFIELD – Hunters in Illinois may use crossbows during archery hunting seasons, including the Illinois archery deer season and the Illinois fall turkey archery season beginning on Oct. 1.

Gov. Bruce Rauner signed into law House Bill 2893, which amended the Illinois Wildlife Code to repeal restrictions on the use of crossbows during archery hunting seasons in Illinois.

Illinois law previously allowed the use of crossbows for archery hunting by persons age 62 or older, and those persons with disabilities who qualified for a crossbow permit issued by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR). In addition, the previous law allowed certain youth hunters to use crossbows, and allowed all archery hunters to use crossbows beginning the Monday after the second firearm deer season.

The 2017-18 season dates for archery deer and fall turkey archery hunting in Illinois are Oct. 1, 2017, through Jan. 14, 2018. Archery seasons will be closed Nov. 17-19 and Nov. 30-Dec. 3 during the firearm deer season in those counties open to firearm deer hunting.
