Pumpkin patches, apple cider donuts, football games and farmers harvesting their crops will again mark the fall season in the Illinois Valley area. But for many area residents, the fall season would not be complete without leisurely drives through the countryside and villages to view the brilliant reds and oranges of the turning autumn leaves. With the cooler temperatures experienced recently throughout the area, the peak of the fall leaf season could arrive a bit earlier this year. Princeton Moose Lodge will host autism fundraiser PRINCETON — The Princeton Moose Lodge will host an Easter Seals Autism Awareness fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Moose Lodge, 1339 N. Scarecrow Festival celebrates fall Dixon event is Sept. 27 DIXON — The 18th annual Scarecrow Festival presented by Hicks Insurance will be in downtown Dixon from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 27. This year, the event will feature many of the fan favorites like pumpkin painting, the great pumpkin patch, craft and food vendors, kid’s games, doggy zoo, Sauk Valley Bank dunk tank and much more. The festival entertainment stage will feature a special family-friendly performance by Funky Monkey Wrestling. Watch these WWE-style wrestlers compete in matches. The ring will be set up at the corner of First and Hennepin Avenue throughout the day. “The Scarecrow Festival is definitely one of the great fall traditions in downtown Dixon,” said Josh Albrecht, executive director of Dixon Main

Street. “It is a great day for families to come and explore the downtown.” The festival is a favorite for families and kids with a wide selection of activities for children. Nearly 5,000 people are expected to attend this year’s event. The doggy zoo continues to grow in popularity, as well. With more than 80 different dog breeds on display, kids can learn about what makes each dog unique while they talk with the dog’s owner. The doggy zoo takes place on the Old Lee County Courthouse Lawn from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The great pumpkin patch will be set up again, as families get to hunt for their gourd in a maze of pumpkins. Habitat for Humanity will host their garage sale fundraiser, and the 4-H clubs will host their annual bake sale. “Every year we continue to grow with new events during the festival,” Albrecht said. “And
we are excited that the traditional events stay with us year after year.” Sky Lantern Productions will be presenting a free community movie at the Historic Dixon Theater, giving a pleasant and enjoyable ending to this year’s annual Dixon’s Scarecrow Festival. Doors open at 3 p.m. There will be the added free showing of a short film, “The Wednesday Morning Breakfast Club” at 3:30 p.m. This is a family friendly short. Following at 4:30 p.m. is the main feature, “The War Within.” This 2014
award winning motion picture gives a creative and suspenseful insight to the internal struggle in every person’s life. Also included during the Scarecrow Festival weekend this year will be a special showing of “The Wizard of Oz” Sept. 26 at dusk on the riverfront. The Dixon Family YMCA and Life House Liberty Court are helping to make this fun family event a kick-off to the weekend of activities. On Sept. 28 come back downtown for the 13th annual Riverfront Classic Car Show from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. This year, the show will feature supercharged cars and trucks and remote control speed boat demonstrations. Food vendors will be on hand. There will be a beer garden and television for the Sunday football games. Adler Theater hosts Festival of Praise Tour DAVENPORT — The Festival of Praise Tour 2014, featuring multiple Grammy, Stellar and Dove Award-winning recording artists Fred Hammond and Donnie McClurkin, is coming to the Adler Theatre at 7 p.m. Sept. 29. “The Festival of Praise Tour was designed as a platform to uplift, motivate and encourage people,” said tour co-creator Ray Hammond, founder and CEO of Face To Face, Inc. of Dallas, Texas. “With all the negative things going on in the world today, we wanted to create an environment to positively impact as many lives as possible. Here are a few more fall recipes, since the gardens are about finished for the year. There are always a lot of zucchini squash left after the gardens are cleaned up. Here are a few good recipes to use up some of the extras.
Zucchini Cornbread 4 cups grated zucchini (use large hole of box grater), about 1 pound 1 onion, chopped 2 eggs, beaten 1 8.5-ounce package corn muffin mix (Jiffy) 1/2 teaspoon salt (try 1/4 teaspoon first) 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 8 ounces shredded cheddar cheese Preheat oven to 350°. Grease a 2-quart baking dish or 9-inch baking pan. In large bowl, mix together zucchini, onion, eggs, muffin mix, salt and pepper. Stir in half of cheese. Spread mixture in prepared dish. Top with remaining cheese. Bake 1 hour. It will take the full hour. Cool 10 minutes. Then cut in squares. Can add bacon or sausage.
Zucchini Onion Pie 3 eggs 1 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup canola oil 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 1 garlic clove, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon pepper 3 cups sliced zucchini 1 cup biscuit/baking mix 1 small onion, chopped In a large bowl, whisk the first seven ingredients. Stir in the zucchini, baking mix and onion. Pour into a greased 9-inch deep dish pie plate. Bake at 350° for 25 to 35 minutes or until lightly browned.
Zucchini Pie 1 cup shredded peeled zucchini 1 cup evaporated milk 1 egg 3 tablespoons flour 3 tablespoons oleo or butter 1 teaspoon vanilla 1/2 cup sugar 1 pie crust Mix ingredients in blender. Pour into 9-inch pie crust. Sprinkle with nutmeg and cinnamon. Bake at 450° for 20 minutes. Reduce heat to 350° and bake 10 more minutes. Check center. Cool and top with whipped cream.
Zucchini ‘N’ Corn Sauté 1 small zucchini, thinly sliced 1/2 medium sweet red or green pepper, julienne 1 tablespoon canola oil 1/2 cup fresh or frozen corn 1/4 teaspoon garlic salt 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning Sauté zucchini and red pepper in oil in a small skillet for 3 to 4 minutes or until crisp tender. Add the corn, garlic salt and Italian seasoning. Sauté 3 to 4 minutes or until corn is tender.
Walnut-Zucchini Sauté 2 medium zucchini, cut into 1/4-inch slices 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 2 teaspoons olive oil 1 teaspoon butter 3 garlic cloves, minced 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper Sauté zucchini and walnuts in oil and butter in a large skillet until zucchini is tender. Add the garlic, salt and pepper. Cook and stir for 1 minute.

LASALLE — The LaSallePeru Cavalier 5K run/walk will be held Sept. 28. Registration will be at 6:45 a.m. in the school cafeteria with the race to follow at 8:30 a.m. starting at the Clock Tower. The race will proceed through LaSalle and Peru and end at Howard Fellows Stadium. Medals will be awarded to overall winners, alumni winners and age-division winners. United Way Scramble PRINCETON — The Bureau County United Way’s 11th annual golf scramble will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26, at Chapel Hill Golf Course, Princeton.
