Bureau and Putnam counties are known for their love of athletics. Right now, volleyball is in full swing around Bureau and Putnam counties, and as always, the two counties have really talented players who will represent the area well. Those who would like to watch their local team in action should make every effort to make it to a game and support their team. The postseason begins at the end of October. Putnam County is in the Tri-County Conference, while St. Bede, Hall, Bureau Valley and Princeton are in the Three Rivers Conference.

Sauk Valley Community College will take a trip to Springfield to explore the Land of Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 3. The bus will depart promptly from the East Mall parking lot at 6:30 a.m. and return at 9:30 p.m. The first stop will be the Lincoln Home. Then the group will have lunch before heading to the Lincoln Tomb. The final stop of the Lincoln tour will be the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum. On the way home, the group will stop for dinner at a fast food restaurant. The cost is $55 per person, and it includes a ticket to the museum. EMT-Basic course at PMH

Perry Memorial Hospital is offering the EMT-Basic course beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27, and continuing to mid-late February with the state exam to follow.

All candidates must be 18 years old or older and hold a high school diploma or have a high school equivalency certificate. Members of OSF Northern Region EMS will be charged $450. Non-members of the OSF Northern Region EMS taking the course will be required to pay $500. Payment can be made by check, money order or credit card and is due at the time of registration. Jordbruksdagarna is back again!

Traditional Swedish fall festival brings food, music, dancing and crafts to Bishop Hill BISHOP HILL — You don’t have to say “Jordbruksdagarna” to know what it means: food, music, dancing, games and crafts at Bishop Hill.

The annual fall festival (pronounced yordbrooks-DAH-ga-na) takes place Saturday, Sept. 26, and Sunday, Sept. 27.

The Bishop Hill Heritage Association will host a variety of traditional craft demonstrations in the village park during the 44th Jordbruksdagarna (Swedish for “earth work days”). Artisans will make rope, craft barrels, process flax, create wood carvings and more.

Vendors will sell farm produce, pumpkins, pioneer popcorn, and much more in the park from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days.

At the Bjorklund Hotel from noon to 4 p.m. each day, there will be demonstrations on how to press and cook sorghum and bake hard tack. Visitors can try their hand at shelling corn, making bricks, pressing cider and making a corn husk doll.

Performances in the

park include Hammer and Pick at noon and 2 p.m., and the Nordic Dancers at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. The Burns Boosters 4-H Club will host a petting zoo both Saturday and Sunday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Old fashioned children’s games will also be conducted in the park at 2 p.m. each day.

Visitors can explore Henry County’s agricultural at the Henry County Historical Museum, where a variety of antique tractors and implements will be displayed. The museum will also be the location of demonstrations on plowing and shelling corn both days of the event from 10 a.m. to noon and from 1 to 3 p.m. There will also be an antique tractor parade starting at 12:30 p.m. each day as well.

Of course, food will be in abundance. The Bishop Hill Old Settlers’ Association will serve “Colony stew” and rice pudding in the park.

Varm Korv, or Swedish hot dog dinner, will be served by Colony Store 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. both days. The Henry County Historical Society is having a bake sale both days at the Henry County Historical Museum.

IVSO will open its 66th season on Sept. 26 LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Symphonic Orchestra will open its 66th season with a real crowd pleaser, Afro-American Celebration, the annual Pops concert, at the Illinois Valley Community College Cultural Centre at 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26.

Returning for her seventh season, esteemed music director and conductor Lucia Matos will feature harpist Faye Seeman, performing “Ennanga for Harp and Orchestra” by William Grant Still.

The audience will also be treated to the tunes of renowned artists Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Scott Joplin and other African-American composers.

Faye Seeman has distinguished herself as one of the most versatile harpists in the Midwest by venturing away from playing traditional classical music. As a solo artist, she completed her first CD, Nearer to Heaven, in 2010, recorded at Baylor University chapel in Seattle. She and several colleagues from the Chicago jazz community established the “ZigZaG” jazz harp quartet (harp, piano, bass and drums), exploring an electric blend of jazz, classical, and new age styles of music. Their CD Caught features several of her own compositions, several jazz standards and free improvisation.

One of Faye’s proudest

accomplishments is the commission of a concerto for harp and orchestra in memory of her late father, violinist and conductor Ernest Seeman.

Noted Chicago composer Gustavo Leone composed the concerto, which premiered in 2006 at the Birch Creek Music Festival in Door County, Wis. Since then the work has been played many times throughout the United States, most recently with the Fox Valley Symphony in Appleton, Wis. Seeman graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor of Music Performance degree and attained a Master of Music Performance degree from Boston University, studying with the legendary harpist Lucile Lawrence. Summers, Faye is on the faculty of the Birch Creek Music Festival in Door County, Wis., and is guest lecturer at Midwest Harp festival in Tulsa, Okla.

Admission to the concert is by season subscription or individual ticket, available at the door or online at ivso.org. Tickets are $15 for adults, 5 for student K-college with ID. This program is sponsored by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency. The auditorium is handicapped accessible.

This season, IVSO concerts will cross the spectrum of cultures. The upcoming

• May 7, 2016, at IVCC Cultural Centre, Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto in E Minor, with guest Violinist Kam-Lung Chen, and Symphony No.1 by Sibelius.

Ready to see some fall foliage?

AccuWeather reports weather conditions over the past few months have laid the foundation for a vibrant display of fall colors in the East, but temperatures in the coming weeks will be the determining factor, experts say.

“I think, overall, that trees are going into the autumn in good physiological condition,” Marc Abrams, professor of ecosystem science and management at Penn State University, said.

“Assuming that we get a normal cooldown in late September to mid-October, the fall colors should be very good.”

To date, the best displays are expected to be visible in New England, upstate New York and the Great Lakes states, but temperatures in the coming weeks could stunt the development of the East’s traditional bright colors.

“The upcoming weather is very important,” Abrams said.

From late September to mid-October, a cold snap paired with dry conditions helps to bring out the vibrant reds, yellows and oranges.

“We want to avoid warm, wet and windy weather during that time,” he said.

According to Abrams, bright colors are also in the offing for the Appalachian

Mountains and as far south as North Carolina and Tennessee.

Three primary factors influence the intensity of foliage colors during the fall season: photoperiod, cool air and water stress.

“The proper photoperiod is upon us,” Michael Day, associate research professor of physiological ecology for the University of Maine, said.

“In the Northeast, trees have had above-average late summer water stress, but we are yet to have a substantial cool period over much of our area,” he said.

However, forecasters predict autumn’s chill may be delayed this year, proving to be bad news for leaf-peepers planning vacations around the seasonal sights.

“A very warm pattern will be found across much of the central and eastern United States through the end of September, particularly in the Great Lakes, Appalachians and Northeast, where temperatures will average well above normal,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Anthony Sagliani said.

“Through the first half of October, we expect a generally warm pattern will remain in place. There are a couple of signs for a cool shot or two, but any long-lived cold snaps appear unlikely,” he said.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is hosting Rocket Readers!

This club uses computer games, activities and story time to encourage elementary students to

improve their reading skills. The club is open to elementary students in second through fifth grades. The club meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library announced the availability of Baker & Taylor’s All-In-One Axis 360 mobile app for patrons.

The new app provides Apple, Android and Windows Desktop users the ability to download and read ebooks or listen to digital audiobooks within the app.

The app provides single sign-on, eliminating the needs for Adobe IDs, additional apps and credentials. Users link to their home library, search or browse their favorite topics and enjoy reading or listening with the app. Axis 360 also presents recommendations from the library’s collection, based on the user’s selection.

Apples are so plentiful, so it’s a good time to come up with some different recipes for their use.

Apple Upside Down Pie

1 cup chopped pecans 1 1/2 cups firmly packaged light brown sugar 1/3 cup butter, melted 1 15-ounce package refrigerated pie crusts, divided 4 medium-size Granny Smith apples, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks (about 1 3/4 pounds) 2 large Jonagold apples, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks (about 1 1/4 pounds) 1/4 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg Preheat oven to 375°. Stir together first three ingredients. And spread onto bottom of a 9-inch pie plate.

Fit 1 pie crust over pecan mixture in pie plate, allowing excess crust to hang over sides. Stir together Granny Smith apples and next five ingredients. Spoon mixture into crust. Packing tightly and mounding in center. Place remaining pie crust over filling, press both crusts together. Fold edges under and crimp. Place pie on an aluminum foil-lined jelly roll pan. Cut 4 to 6 slits in top of pie for steam to escape. Bake at 375° on lowest oven rack for 60 to 65 minutes so all juices are thick and bubbly, and crust is golden brown and apples are tender when pierced with a long wooden pick through sides of crust. Shield pie with aluminum foil after 50 minutes, if necessary to prevent excessive browning. Cool on wire rack 10 minutes. Place a serving plate over top of pie, invert pie onto serving plate.

Remove pie plate and replace any remaining pecans in pie plate on top of pie. Let cool completely 1 hour.

Country Apple Dumplings

2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled and cored 2 10-ounce cans refrigerated crescent roll dough 1 cup butter 1 1/2 cups white sugar

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 12-ounce can or bottle Mountain Dew Preheat the oven to 350°. Grease a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Cut each apple into 8 wedges and set aside. Separate the crescent roll dough into triangles. Roll each apple wedge in crescent roll dough, starting at the smallest end.

Pinch to seal and place in the baking dish. Melt butter in a small saucepan and stir in the sugar and cinnamon. Pour over the apple dumplings. Pour Mountain Dew over the dumplings. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes in the preheated oven to until golden brown.

Praline Topped Apple Bread

2 cups all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup sugar 1 cup (8 ounces) sour cream 2 eggs 3 teaspoons vanilla 1 1/2 cups chopped peeled Granny Smith apples 1 1/4 cups chopped pecans, toasted, divided 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup packed brown sugar In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt. In another bowl, mix the sugar, sour cream, eggs and vanilla just until moistened. Fold in the apples and 1 cup pecans. Transfer to a greased 9-by-5-inch loaf pan. Bake at 350° for 50 to 55 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Cool in pan for 10 minutes. Remove to wire rack to cool. In a saucepan, bring butter and brown sugar to a boil. Cook and stir for 1 minute. Spoon over bread. Sprinkle with remaining pecans.

Add sugar mixture. Toss to coat. Unroll one pastry sheet into a 9-inch pie plate. Trim even with rim. Add filling. Dot with butter. Drizzle with 2 tablespoons maple syrup. Unroll remaining pie crust over filling. Trim seal and flute edge.

Cut slits on top; brush pastry with 1 tablespoon maple syrup. Bake at 425° for 40 to 45 minutes or until crust is golden brown and filling is bubbly. Cover pie loosely with foil during the last 20 minutes if needed to prevent over browning. Remove foil. Cool on wire rack. Serve with warn maple syrup.

Mom’s Cinnamon Apple Crisp

6 cups thinly sliced peeled tart apples 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 2 tablespoons butter TOPPING 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 cup sugar 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed 1 egg, lightly beaten Vanilla ice cream, optional Combine apples, sugar, flour and cinnamon in a large bowl. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in egg until moistened. Sprinkle over filling.

Bake, uncovered, at 375 degrees for 40 to 45 minutes or until topping is golden brown and apples are tender.

Serve warm with ice cream.
