Falling in love with autumn With changing leaves, cool air, pumpkins and Halloween, fall is a great season. Fall officially begins Friday, Sept. 22.

Before long, we’ll be scraping the frost off our windows, reaching in our closets for a snuggly jacket and many of us will be driving home in the dark as daylight gets shorter each day.

Opening the door for Medicaid-eligible members Counseling center will focus on helping with mental health issues

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com PRINCETON — The doors are now open at Open Doors Community Counseling center, which is a new program of Gateway Services.

The center provides counseling to community members who are 18 years of age and are Medicaid-eligible in Illinois.

Historically, Gateway Services has been a provider for people with intellectual or developmental disabilities, but this new program is expanding services to anyone in need.

Open Doors Community Counseling is staffed with two clinicians including Ashley Holcman, licensed clinical professional counselor, and Mike Miroux, qualified mental health professional.

The two have spent more than a year building the program from the ground up with Gateway’s Director of Professional Services Sherry Dziadon.

Holcman said Gateway was looking at different services needed in the community and realized the lack of aid for people with Medicaid. Many agencies currently are not accepting Medicaid patients because services are full, which in turn has left a huge gap to fill for these patients seeking assistance.

“We’re unique here as in we’re preparing to take on just

Medicaid patients right now and really go after this segment of our community that’s really needing more resources,” Miroux said.

The new counseling center does have plans to expand its program to be able to serve more than just Medicaid patients, but Holcman said it’s one step at a time.

“Our hope for the future — next year, hopefully, is to be able to offer services to people with insurance and then slide and scale for people who have nothing,” she said.

The site is approved by the Illinois Department of Human Services to provide Medicaid community health services including mental health assessment, treatment plan development, therapy/counseling, crisis intervention, consultation services and transition linkage and aftercare services.

Holcman and Miroux plan to work closely with other community organizations and social services to address critical issues such as substance abuse, mental illness, homeless and poverty.

“It takes a village to tackle those problems, but we feel strongly that to make our community successful and make are agency successful we work together with other organizations,” Miroux said.

Holcman and Miroux are

currently working on outreach with local doctors and hospitals, as well as service providers such as Bureau County Health Department and Tri-County Opportunities Council.

“We’re really looking at partnering with others in the community and we welcome them to contact us to meet and talk about how we can help and how they can help our clients here that we see,” Miroux said.

Open Doors Community Counseling emphasizes best practices and works to build on strengths and successes of clients to help guide them toward solutions, goals and regain a level of wellness.

“We have a lot of counseling approaches that are found to be very effective in treating issues,” Miroux said.

While statistics show one in four people have a mental health illness or diagnosis, Holcman said they’re trying to reduce the stigma and make others realize this is something everyone either knows somebody struggling with or even may be struggling with themselves.

“Counseling can be very effective in treating anxiety, depression and mood and personality disorders. There’s no shame in reaching out for help,” she said.

PRINCETON — Suzzy Roche, the youngest of the Roche sisters (Maggie and Terre being the others), is best known for her work with the vocal group, The Roches. Their 1979 debut album with the same title has recently been listed by National Public Radio as one of the 150 Greatest Albums Made by Women.

On Saturday, Sept. 23, Roche will perform with her daughter, Lucy Wainwright Roche, at the Princeton Coffeehouse. The coffeehouse is located at Open Prairie United Church of Christ, 25 E. Marion in Princeton. Doors open at 7 p.m. and

the concert begins at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to the musical lineage on her mother’s side, Lucy is also part of a extended and well-known musical family on her father’s side.

She is the daughter of the Grammy Award winner Loudon Wainwright III. Her half-siblings are the singer-songwriters Rufus Wainwright and Martha Wainwright.

Suzzy and Lucy are appearing in Princeton as part of their fall 2017 Mother/Daughter/Dog tour. A dog along for the tour seems to be a tradition for Lucy: when she performed solo at the coffeehouse in

2014, her dog was – if not her accompanist – in attendance.

State of Grace gospel trio will perform in Seatonville SEATONVILLE — The Seatonville Congregational Church, Independent will host a family banquet on Saturday, Sept. 30, to honor fathers and sons.

Serving will begin at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited. There is no charge for the potluck meal, but it is requested that attendees bring dishes to pass according to the size of their group. Following the meal, at approximately 7 p.m., there will be a concert performed by State of Grace, a southern Gospel trio based

in Sullivan, Ill. The trio has been singing for more than 10 years. Della, Gary and Glenda enjoy traveling and singing but the greatest joy is to be able to share the Gospel through songs and testimonies.

They are considered to be the premier southern gospel group in central Illinois.

Besides singing throughout Illinois, State of Grace has performed in Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Tennessee, Wisconsin and Arkansas. The group has opened for various groups, including Crabb Revival, Beyond the Ashes, Tribute, The Bowlings, The Perrys, Tim Lovelace and The Greens.

Princeton Public Library receives anonymous donation

PRINCETON — Saturday, Sept. 23, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the library will host its third annual author fair. Meet more than 20 local authors and participate in writing related programming.

Monday, Sept. 25, 6:30 p.m., Monday Movie: During the roaring ‘20s, an aspiring writer moves to Long Island in search of the American Dream.

Tuesday, Sept. 26, 10:30 a.m., Youth Services story time and craft.

The library recently added new DVDs to the library collection, including “Grantchester: The Complete Third Season,” “Big Little Lies: Season 1,” “Alien: Covenant,” “The Great British Baking Show: Season 4” and “Madame Secretary: Season 2.”

SPRING VALLEY — The adult library has an activity tables for individuals to participate in while at the library. There are jigsaw puzzles, coloring pages and other puzzles. Supplies are provided by the library.

WYANET — The library is starting up its program season for the 2017-18 year.

This year, the library is adding a class for budding authors. On the second Tuesday of each month, the library will be sponsoring a self-publishing class.

The library also features night computer classes with Ethan Sproul and James Smith of

TestPoint II Technologies. These classes meet on the first and third Thursdays each month at 6 p.m. The classes are learning about Windows 10. There is one Windows 10 computer with available WI-FI for personal laptops.

LAMOILLE — The library has many new titles to choose from. However, if it doesn’t have an item you’re looking for, ask the librarian if she can order them for you through interlibrary loan.

Want to join the fun of choosing a book award? If you are in Grades 4-8, you are eligible to read Rebecca Caudill Award nominees and have the opportunity to choose the winner from 20 nominees. Ask your librarian for details.

BUDA — All fines will be cancelled for patrons who get their overdue books and movies back to the Mason Memorial Library from now through Saturday, Sept. 30.
