Harvest Home in Hennepin The 2015 Harvest Home Celebration in Hennepin is set for Friday, Sept. 18, and Saturday, Sept. 19. A host of activities are planned.

On Friday, a Neon Lights Harvest Home Family Fun Run is set from 7 to 9 p.m. Each participant will get a neon pack that includes a neon T-shirt, glasses, necklace and two neon bracelets. Neon paints and other items will be available purchase. Participants are reminded this is a fun run, rather than a race. This event is to raise funds for Angel Gende and her family, as well as the Harvest Home funds and Roses from Linda. For more information, contact T.J. Hodges at 217-417-2677.

Home Grown: A Celebration of our Roots parade is set for Saturday, Sept. 19. Registration begins at 10:30 a.m., and the parade starts at 11 a.m. at the Hennepin Pool. There is no charge to participate. This year’s theme revolves around the celebration of where we call home.

Participants are urged to dress their best and deck their floats in black and gold, corn stalks, broom corn, etc.

There will be a cash prize for the best golf cart/ATV — $30 for best in show and a $15 runner-up prize. There will also be trophies for the best float that interprets “Home Grown.” At the end of the parade there will be a trophy for the Best Dinner Call so start working on your “Dinner’s Ready” cry! Parade is open to all businesses, groups, organizations, public and politicians. Farm implements are welcome and encouraged to attend as are livestock walk-throughs or horse drawn/horseback entries.

The annual Scarecrow Contest will be judged on Harvest Eve, Friday, Sept. 18. The best scarecrow and runner up will receive a cash award for residential category and a trophy for business/organization category for the Top 3 entries. First prize will be $50, with two runners up that will receive $25 each. Rules are posted around town.

Scarecrows should be displayed the week of Harvest Home and no later than Friday.

Excursion to see ‘Peter and the Starcatcher’ at Drury Lane Theatre in Oak Brook

The Charles Perdew Museum Organization, which is dedicated to preserving the memory of famed decoy carver and Henry resident Charles Perdew, will have an annual fundraising dinner and auction on Saturday, Sept. 19, at River Valley Bowl in Henry. An all-you-can-breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept. 20, at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru. PRINCETON — The Learning Stage committee of the Princeton Theatre Group is organizing an excursion to Drury Lane Theatre in Oak Brook to see the Broadway hit, “Peter and the Starcatcher”, on Sunday, Oct. 11. The day will include a Drury Lane champagne brunch before seeing a matinee performance of the show.

Festival 56 theatre-goers will have the opportunity to see a familiar face in a lead role on the Drury Lane stage, Caleb Donahoe, a former Festival 56 company member, plays “Boy” in Peter and the Starcatcher.

He was part of the festival’s 2013 and 2014 seasons, appearing in the Full Monty, the Putnam County Spelling Bee, Oliver and Into the Woods.

Donahoe will meet/greet the Princeton group after the matinee.

Drury Lane describes Peter and the Starcatcher as “an enchanting,

swashbuckling, grown-up’s prequel to Peter Pan that will have you hooked from the moment you let your imagination take flight.” Based on the book by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, it is a fast-paced, exhilarating theatre experience suitable for adults and children ages 10 and older. The audience follows a captivating cast of characters on a journey to solve the mystery of how Peter Pan became, “the boy who never grew up.”

“Teeming with heroes, villains and all those in between, Peter and the Starcatcher is both a terrific story and a celebration of theater itself,” said Matt Mueller (an actor in the Drury Lane production) in a recent interview in the Chicago Tribune.

Princeton Public Library to start little free libraries PRINCETON — Thursday, Sept. 17, from 3 to 6 p.m., the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will be holding a blood drive at the library. Sign-up in advance is encouraged, although walkins will be accepted. A sign-up sheet is located at the events kiosk in the library.

Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 a.m., Galesburg Sewing will be at the library to clean and repair sewing machines. This program is sponsored by the Princeton Public Library and the Covered Bridge Quilters Guild. Pre-registration is requested at the library.

Friday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m., the library will have a special guest poet at their Coffee and Couplets gathering. Judith Cordary has been published widely in small journals, especially “The Beloit Poetry Journal.” Her first published collection of poems, “An Ordinary Radiance,” came out in 2014, and she has a second collection that will be published in the near future. She taught English at Rock Valley College for 20 years and won its Teacher of the Year in 2012.

‘Letters About Literature’ contest SPRINGFIELD — Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White is urging students in Grades 4 through 12 to enter the 2016 “Letters About Literature” contest — a national reading and writing competition sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book.

“Letters About Literature” invites students to read a book, poem or play of their choice and write a letter to the author about how the work changed their life or view of the world. Students can enter on their own or through their schools, libraries or other youth organizations.

“Every year thousands of students in Illinois enjoy participating in this inspiring competition,”

said White. “Illinois has had more entries than any other state for eight years in a row. Anyone who has read past letters can see how literature inspires and touches the lives of our young people. I encourage all our students to take part in Letters About Literature, and I hope their participation leads to a lifetime of reading.”

There are three levels of participation: Level I for Grades 4-6, Level II for Grades 7-8 and Level III for Grades 9-12. One Illinois winner will be selected for each level and receive a $200 cash award. Teachers of the winning students will receive a $100 cash award to purchase materials for their school library. Winners and

teachers will be invited to an awards ceremony in Springfield. The state winners’ letters will be forwarded for national judging. In last year’s competition, Illinois Level III winner, Aidan Kingwell, a student at Fenwick High School in Oak Park, was selected as the Level III national winner.

The deadline to enter the competition is Friday, Dec. 4, for Level III, and Monday, Jan. 11, 2016, for Levels I and II. State winners will be announced in April 2016.

Covered Bridge Chorus prepares for annual show PRINCETON — The Covered Bridge Chorus is working on show music for its annual show.

‘Walk to Remember’ on Sept. 27 in Peru PERU — The River Valley chapter of The Compassionate Friends invites bereaved parents, siblings, relatives and friends to join them at their Walk to Remember at 10 a.m.

Sunday, Sept. 27, at Baker Lake in Peru.

Following the walk, there will be a balloon release along with games for children. A $10 donation per person is requested and children under 10 are free. Donations will be used to purchase education materials for grieving parents and families and to eventually erect a memorial for all children who have died.

As the world’s largest self help bereavement organization, The Compassionate Friends offers friendship, understanding and hope

to families that have experienced the death of a child at any age of any cause. There are more than 700 chapters in the United States including all 50 states. The local event is patterned after The Compassionate Friends National Walk to Remember this year held in Dallas, Texas, in July.

“You do not need to be a member of The Compassionate Friends to join with us and you do not need to walk around the lake,” said chapter leader Rita Studzinski. “We welcome everyone who wants to join hands and hearts in remembering all children who have died too soon.”

Audiences from coast to coast continue to fall in love with the residents of the church basement kitchen. With each installment, these women have managed to serve up rib-tickling changes in the church kitchen without spilling a drop of their coffee.

The cast features Camilla Russell in the role of the widow, “Mrs. Lars Snustad” (Vivian), the matriarch of the kitchen; Cyndy Bruch as the able-bodied farm wife and jack-of-all-trades,“Mrs. Gilmer Gilmerson” (Mavis); Jane Knapp in the role of “Mrs. Elroy Engelson”

(Karin), the best cook in the kitchen; Carrie Schwiderski as Karin’s daughter “Signe Engelson”; and also features Ron Friedrich as “Pastor E. L. Gunderson” who performs his usual pastoral duties.

Complete with twelve songs, “Church Basement Ladies” is a celebration of the church basement kitchen and the women who work there. The production shows them handle a record breaking Christmas dinner, the funeral of a dear friend, a Hawaiian Easter fundraiser and a steaming hot July wedding. They stave off potential disasters, share and debate recipes, instruct the young, and keep the pastor on due course while thoroughly enjoying, (and tolerating) each other.

Saturday and Sunday performances are dinner theater package shows — tickets are $30, which include the show and a meal featur-

ing a salad bar, buffet dinner, roll and butter, coffee and tea, dessert and three beverages. Friday, Oct. 23, is the show only — tickets are $17. That night refreshments and beverages can be purchased prior to the performance and during intermission.

Tickets for all the dinner/ theatre performances must be reserved by Tuesday, Oct. 13, and Oct. 20 for the following weekend performances. No tickets can be purchased at the door for the dinner theatre combination performances.

On Oct. 17 and 24, doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner served at 6:30 p.m., followed by the show. On Oct. 18 and Oct. 25, doors open at noon with dinner served at 12:30 p.m., followed by the show. Land of Lincoln trip DIXON — Sauk Valley Community College will take a trip to Springfield to explore the Land of Lincoln on Saturday, Oct. 3.

The bus will depart promptly from the East Mall parking lot at 6:30

a.m. and return at 9:30 p.m. The first stop will be the Lincoln Home. Then the group will have lunch before heading to the Lincoln Tomb. The final stop of the Lincoln tour will be the Abraham Lincoln Pres-

Breakfast at airport in Peru set for Sept. 20 PERU — A breakfast will be served from 7 a.m. to noon Sunday, Sept.

20, at the Illinois Valley Regional Airport in Peru. This all-you-caneat breakfast will include eggs, cooked any way you like, pancakes, sausage, coffee, milk and juice.

The cost is $7 for adults, $3 for children under 12 and free for children

Illinois Valley Scene

With school already started, we’ll all be packing lunches for the kids and for ourselves. Here are some recipes for bar cookies that always go great in a lunchbox.

Fudgy S’mores Brownies 1 1/3 cups butter, softened 2 1/2 cups sugar 4 eggs 1 tablespoon vanilla extract 2 cups all-purpose flour 1 cup baking cocoa 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 cup Golden Grahams, coarsely crushed 1 3/4 cups miniature marshmallows 4 ounces milk chocolate, chopped Preheat oven to 350°. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. In a bowl, mix the flour, cocoa and salt: gradually beat into creamed nurture, spread into a greased 13-by-9-inch baking pan. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out with moist crumbs (do not overtake). Preheat the broiler. Sprinkle baked brownies with cereal and marshmallows, broil 5 to 6 inches from heat 30 to 45 seconds or until marshmallows are golden brown. Immediately sprinkle with chopped chocolate.

Cover with foil and let stand 5 minutes or until the chocolate begins to melt.

Remove foil and cool completely in pan on a wire rack. Cut into bars.

Maple-Pumpkin Pie Bars 1 package 2 layer size yellow cake mix 4 eggs, divided 1/2 cup butter or margarine, melted 1/2 cup packed brown sugar 1 8-ounce package cream cheese 1 15-ounce can pumpkin 1 3.4-ounce package Jell-O Pumpkin spice instant pudding 1/3 cup milk 3 tablespoons maple syrup 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 envelope Dream Whip whipped topping mix Line a 13-by-9-inch pan with foil; spray with cooking spray. Blend cake mix, 1 egg and butter. Press into bottom of pan. Beat cream cheese, brown sugar, remaining eggs, pumpkin and pudding mix with mixer until blended. Pour over crust. Bake 40 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.

Transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

Mix whipped topping mix with milk and syrup in large bowl with mixer on low speed until blended. Beat on high speed until mixture forms stiff peaks. Spread onto dessert. Sprinkle with cinnamon and refrigerate until ready to serve.

Fresh Raspberry Bars 1 cup unsalted butter (2 sticks) cut into 1-inch chunks 1/4 cup packed light brown sugar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt 2 cups unbleached all-purpose flour Softened butter to brush sides of foil 1/4 cup seedless raspberry jam or preserves 1 pint (2 cups) fresh raspberries 1/2 of an 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 4 ounces goat cheese or 4 ounces cream cheese 1/2 cup sugar 1 tablespoon flour 1 large egg 1 large egg yolk 2 tablespoons shredded lemon peel (zest) 2 tablespoons fresh squeezed lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Powdered sugar Preheat oven to 350°. Line a 13-by-9inch baking pan with a 24-inch long sheet of foil. Leave extra foil extending over ends. In a large bowl, beat the butter with an electric mixer on medium to high

speed, until it just begins to blend and soften, slightly about 30 seconds. Add brown sugar and salt; beat on low speed until incorporated, 30 seconds to 1 minute (you’re not trying to cream it, just mix it in). With mixer off add the 2 cups flour. Beat on low speed until flour is mixed. Increase speed to medium. Mix until ingredients form cohesive dough.

Break dough into small chunks and distribute in prepared pan. With your fingers, press dough into an even layer. Bake 20 minutes. Cool on wire rack. Lightly brush sides of foil with softened butter to keep filling from sticking Spread jam evenly over crust. Sprinkle evenly with raspberries. With a lemon zester remove peel from lemon. Do this right before baking. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese and goat cheese with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Mix in sugar and 1 tablespoon flour. With mixer running, add egg, egg yolk, lemon zest, lemon juice and vanilla. Beat until smooth.

Super Cookie Sheet 2 1/4 cups all-propose flour 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup softened butter 1 cup granulated sugar 1 large egg 1 large egg white 2 tablespoons sour cream 1 teaspoon vanilla Vanilla frosting (recipe follows) Heat oven to 350°. Line a 9-by-13-inch pan with a strip of parchment, allowing edges to hang over opposite sides. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt. In another bowl, beat together butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Stir in egg, egg white, sour cream and vanilla and mix until blended. Add flour mixture and stir until just combined. With greased hands, gently press dough into pan. Bake until the edges are lightly golden, 17 to 19 minutes. Cool completely then frost and decorate. Use the parchment overhang to lift from pan.

Slice and serve. Makes 20 bars.

Vanilla Frosting 6 tablespoons softened unsalted butter 2 1/2 cups confectioners’ sugar 3-4 tablespoon milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla 1/8 teaspoon salt Food coloring Beat together butter, confectioners’ sugar and milk until fluffy. Stir in vanilla and salt. Tint frosting with any food coloring.

Take a Vet Fishing SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley Boat Club is looking for a few good fishermen to help with its Take a Vet Fishing Day project on Saturday, Sept.

Local fishermen with a boat are needed to help on this day. Everyone will meet at Illinois Valley Outdoors Bait Shop in Spring Valley at 9 a.m. for breakfast and vets will meet their boat captain. Boats will launch at 9 a.m. and return to Barto Landing at 1 p.m.
