Art, music, food and more at the Artisan Market The fourth annual Artisan Market at Hornbaker Gardens is set for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17.

Event-goers can expect to see an artisan market filled with more than 30 artists, who will be displaying and selling their work in a variety of mediums.

And that’s just the beginning ...

Besides being able to view, admire and even buy some great art pieces of local artists, a host of other activities will be on site.

You’ll want to come hungry and thirsty, since those in attendance will find wine tasting, local food vendors, fresh produce, baked good, ice cream popcorn, artisan cheeses and more.

Ann Crosby returns to the market again with her pottery wheel, giving demonstrations and welcoming those who want to try to hand at this fun-filled demonstration.

There will also be other events for children.

Matt Denault, a local rock balancing artist, will create rock sculptures throughout the day.

There will also be plenty of live entertainment throughout the day, including Al and Jeannie Brown (pictured at right) from 2 to 3 p.m.

Announcing the 2016 Women of Distinction Illinois State Sen. Sue Rezin is the keynote speaker After much deliberation by the judges ... and many miles traveled to notify the winners, Illinois Valley Living magazine and the Bureau County Republican, Putnam County Record and Tonica News are proud to announce the 2016 Women of Distinction.

Receiving the honors this year are six ladies from the Illinois Valley.

They include: • Sheryl Churney of LaSalle.

• Nancy Heiden of Princeton.

• Joy Kauffman of Tiskilwa.

• Monico Huber Nunez of Princeton.

• Barbara White of Cherry.

• Deb Wood of rural Princeton.

As in the previous three years of this award, the winners were selected by former Women of Distinction award winners. As typical in the past years since the award’s inception in 2013, Illinois Valley Living magazine received numerous nominations this year. The judges clearly had their work cut out for them, as they read and reread each nomination received for deserving women throughout the Illinois Valley. The judges made their selections using a number system.

The numbers were then tallied, and the aforementioned women collectively received the highest totals

from the judges.

“This was quite a task,” said one of the judges, a former Women of Distinction winner. “All of the ladies who were nominated were so deserving of this award. It was difficult to select my winners, but after I was finished, it became clear all the ladies who were nominated were winners. Every lady nominated was a winner in her own right. The Illinois Valley is lucky to have so many women who make a difference in the lives of other people.”

All of the 2016 Women of Distinction winners — as well as all women in general — will be honored at a luncheon set for 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Tues-

day, Oct. 25, at The Barn at Hornbaker Gardens in rural Princeton. The facility is located at 22937 County Road 1140 North.

The event includes keynote speaker and former Women of Distinction award winner Illinois State Sen. Sue Rezin; a catered luncheon; an opportunity to hear from all the 2016 Women of Distinction; an awards ceremony; plenty of door prizes; networking opportunities; a goodie bag; and much more. The public is invited.

Tickets are available at the Bureau County Republican newspaper, located at 800 Ace Road.

Welcome Illinois State Sen. Sue Rezin Rezin is keynote speaker for Women of Distinction awards luncheon

Illinois State Sen. Sue Rezin has served in her state office seat since 2010.

She represents all or parts of Bureau, Grundy, LaSalle, Kendall, Livingston, Putnam and Will counties.

Illinois Valley Living Magazine, the Bureau County Republican, the Putnam County Record and the Tonica News is happy to announce Rezin has confirmed she will be the keynote speaker at the annual Women of Distinction awards luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 25. Rezin is a 2015 Women of Distinction award winner.

Rezin’s hometown is Geneseo, however, she now resides in Morris with her husband, Keith, four children and three dogs — all labs, one brown, one black and one yellow.

Rezin attended Augustana College and graduated with a degree in international business and political science with a minor in Hispanic studies.

As an Illinois Senator, Rezin said one of her most important responsibilities is to represent her constituents and their values.

“This means fighting for them and what they deem important in Springfield, while also helping them with state-related problems,” Rezin said, adding other responsibilities include being a public voice for her constituents in Springfield; communicating regularly with constituents, educational leaders and local, state and federal leaders about issues; meeting with everyday families/ workers; and visiting business/job creators.

“I love this job because not only do I get to meet so many wonderful people and travel throughout our great district, but I get to represent them,” she said.

Rezin said one of the opportunities associated with her position is to help ideas become a reality for the district and the state, whether it’s local economic issues, the state’s educational system, roads, making government more efficient, and more.

deeply about. It’s a privilege my role allows me to do that on a daily basis,” Rezin said.

Besides her work as a state senator, Rezin said she enjoys spending time with her family and making memorable experiences with family and friends.

She also enjoys riding her bike long distances and is a runner as well.

Her advice to others — specifically women in the workplace — is simple: Work harder than anyone else.

“Having a bad experience should not be looked at as a burden or a stumbling block,” Rezin said.

“Look at it as a learning experience and take that experience to grow from it. Look at challenges as

a positive, not as a road block. Don’t be limited by your surroundings.”

Beautifying ... and shading Main Street Taylor’s Trees and Turf is donating trees to help beautify Princeton’s Main Street

PRINCETON — Decades ago, before disease ravaged the majority of the city’s elm trees, Princeton’s scenic streets were known for being lush and shady. Taylor’s Trees and Turf is now helping to renew that vision.

“If you look down Main Street, it’s rather cold and harsh looking. We’d like to bring back the color and shade the trees provide in order to restore some of the Main Street of the past that everyone loves. If we can provide a pleasant environment, it will be remembered, and people will want to return to Princeton. Taylor’s Trees and Turf is providing a lot of help today to make that happen,” Princeton Mayor Joel Quiram said.

Dennis Taylor and Josh Taylor were both on hand, along with the mayor; Brian Gift, Princeton’s director of planning; Chamber of Commerce member Gina

Nelson; and Main Street steering committee member Kim Scott, at the Prouty Building on Monday, Aug. 29, to discuss the 20 trees being donated to Princeton.

“We’re donating four types of trees — Ivory Snow Lilacs, Armstrong Maples, ginkgos and lindens,” Dennis Taylor said.

The lilacs will bloom with fragrant white flowers. The maples will turn red in autumn, and the ginkgos and lindens will both turn yellow.

They are scheduled to be planted in mid-September and will be on both the north and south ends of Main Street.

Many will be in new areas, but a few are being used to replace existing trees which are diseased.

While the trees themselves have been donated there are still installation costs which must be met.

The Chamber of Commerce is seeking donations to help meet this expense. Any donations are greatly appreciated, but the Chamber is offer-

WYANET — The 2nd Thursday@the Library season will last through November, break for December through February, resume in March and go through May. LAMOILLE — Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday, which is an ongoing program.

Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups,

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

Friday Night Lights

PRINCETON — Princeton High School will celebrate its 2016 Homecoming by welcoming the arch-rival Hall Red Devils to Bryant Field Friday night.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. for the Three Rivers Mississippi Division contest.

In other action this week under the Friday Night Lights, St. Bede travels to Sherrard, Bureau Valley hosts Orion, Amboy travels to Forreston, LaSalle-Peru plays at Sterling, Mendota treks to Rockford Christian and Annawan/ Wethersfield hosts Monmouth United.

CPASA golf outing

SHEFFIELD — The Bureau County Sheriff’s Office, Princeton Police Department and CPASA are hosting a golf outing Friday, Sept. 23, at Hidden Lake Golf Club to benefit its substance abuse and DARE programs.

Registration will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.

Cost is $50 for golf and lunch.

Reservations are required by Sept. 19. Lunch, hole and team sponsors are being taken as well.

‘Striking Out Cancer’

ROCK FALLS — This year’s “Striking Out Cancer” coed tourney is Saturday, Oct. 1, at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

Entry fee is $100 per team and each team must field a minimum of two girls. Deadline for entry is Sunday, Sept 25.

A portion ($500) of the proceeds will go to “Home of Hope” in Sterling. The remainder will go to the “Miss Anita Project,” in which the Elgin children will be donating books to classrooms and cancer care bags to the hospital chemo department in honor of their mom.

Sandlot softball

LASALLE — The Illinois Valley/Mendota YMCA will host a Sandlot Softball Tournament on Saturday, Sept. 24, and Sunday, Sept. 25, at Hegeler Park in LaSalle.

Entry fee is $150 per team with roster due by Thursday, Sept.

15. Teams consist of 10 or 12 players.

There is no home run limit. A 15-run rule after four innings, 10-run rule after five innings will be utilized. Games are seven innings with a one-hour time limit. No inning may start after 45 minutes. At-bats will start with a 1-1 count.

PRINCETON — The 15th annual Princeton High School Varsity Invitational golf tournament will be held on Saturday, Sept. 17, at Chapel Hill Golf Course. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 8 a.m.

High schools participating this year in the invitational are Bureau Valley, Hall, IVC, Kewanee, LaSalle-Peru, Mendota, Princeton, Rochelle, Rock Falls and St. Bede.

WALNUT — The Bureau Valley High School Invitational cross country meet will start at 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the

Walnut Park District fields.

Local cross country teams participating include Bureau Valley, Hall, Princeton and Amboy/ LaMoille.

Lindeman Golf Outing

MCNABB — The annual Jan Lindeman Golf Outing will be Friday, Sept. 16, at Edgewood Park Golf Club in McNabb. It will benefit North Central Illinois Council of Governments (NCICG).

Registration starts at 7 a.m. for the four-person scramble. A shotgun start is at 8 a.m. Golf is $55 per golfer, which includes 18 holes, cart, lunch and door prizes. Hole sponsorship is $50 per hole or three for $125. Lunch only is $20.

IDNR Seasons

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Natural Resources announced proposed waterfowl season dates and bag limits for the 2016–17 seasons.

The recommendations include 60-day duck seasons in each of the state’s four waterfowl hunting zones, along with 107 days of Canada goose hunting opportunity in the North and Central zones (15 days in September, two days of youth hunting and 90 days of regular goose season), 99 days of Canada goose hunting opportunity in the South Central zone, and 86 days of Canada goose hunting opportunity in the South zone. Goose season lengths are shorter in the South Central and South zones to coincide with duck season dates and to match hunter preferences.

2015. This year, Illinois will open the regular duck, Canada goose, and snow goose seasons on Oct. 15 in the North Zone, Oct. 22 in the Central Zone, Nov. 11 in the South Central Zone, and Nov. 24 in the South Zone. White-fronted goose (specklebelly) seasons will open on Oct. 17 in the North Zone, Nov. 5 in the Central Zone, and with duck season in the South Central (Nov. 11) and South zones (Nov. 24).

The proposed daily duck bag limit is six and may include no more than four mallards (two hens), three wood ducks, three scaup, two redheads, two pintails, two canvasback, one black duck, and one mottled duck. The proposed daily bag limit of mergansers is five, only two of which may be hooded mergansers. The possession limit for ducks and mergansers is three times the daily bag limit by species and sex.

Canada and white-fronted goose daily bag limits will be two with a possession limit of six.

The snow goose daily bag limit is 20 birds, with no possession limit, during the fall and winter season. The spring Conservation Order Light Goose Season will open Jan. 13 in the North Zone and Feb. 1 in the Central, South Central, and South zones, ending March 31 in all zones. There is no daily bag or possession limit on snow, blue, and Ross’ geese during this season.

The September 2016 early Canada goose season is Sept.

1–15 with a daily limit of five and a possession limit of 15 geese in the North and Central zones, and a daily limit of two and a possession limit of six geese in the South Central and South zones.

The 2016 Illinois16-day statewide teal hunting season is Sept.

3–18, with a daily limit of six and a possession limit of 18. Shooting hours for the September teal season are different from the regular season, starting at sunrise (halfhour later than regular season) until sunset.

NFL flag football

PERU — With NFL flag football, boys and girls learn the basics and fundamentals of football, and interact and become more active with children their age in a less aggressive form of the game.

Games dates include Sept. 24, which will be held indoors at the YMCA Green Gym, and Oct. 1, 8, 15 and 22, which will be at Washington Park unless it rains.

In the event of rain, they will meet indoors at the Green Gym. Second- and third-graders will play from 9 to 10 a.m., and fourth- and fifth-graders will play from 10 to 11 a.m. The fee is $50 per member and $60 for non-members.

Charity softball LASALLE — Charity for a Cause softball tournament will be hosted by the Illinois Valley/Mendota YMCA on Saturday, Sept.

24, at Hegeler Park in LaSalle.

Games start at 7:45 a.m. Entry fee is $150 per team, due with roster.

Teams consist of 10 (5-5) and 12 (6-6) with a maximum of 10 on the field.

Team registration fee and roster is due by Thursday, Sept. 15.
