Fr. Ronald Margherio leads St. Bede’s all-school prayer service

PERU — St. Bede’s annual Spirit Week had a unique addition on Wednesday, Aug. 23, when Fr. Ronald Margherio, OSB ‘68, led the annual all-school prayer service not far from where construction began during summer break for the new science and student commons.

The service included all students saying a separate blessing prayer for the freshmen, sophomore, junior and senior classes.

A blessing was then said by all students for the faculty and staff of St. Bede and, in turn, the faculty and staff renewed their commitment to the students.

All students and faculty then proceeded to take part in a ceremonial groundbreaking over the new addition which included remarks by Abbot Philip Davey, OSB ’65, Mackenzie Brady, St. Bede Student Government President, John O’Reilly, a member of the Class of ’61, and Matt McGinnis, Legacy Project Campaign Director.

“It is important for all the students and staff to be a part of this exciting time at St. Bede,” McGinnis said.

“It truly brings the project home to have all of them, now that everyone is back on campus, participate in

the groundbreaking. The Legacy Project is about our students and their future, but we wouldn’t be here today if not for the great care and generosity of our alumni and friends.”

Brady said this addition has sent a clear message to the students, teacher and community that St. Bede is here to stay.

“It will create a teaching and learning environment that will propel our programs forward and better prepare us for the next phase of our lives,” she said.

Proudly wearing a Class of ’61 baseball cap, O’Reilly commented on the significance of a St. Bede education that will stay with students for a lifetime and reflected on the days when his class was on campus and the importance of paying it forward.

Davey said it’s meaningful the groundbreaking was held during spirit week.

“It is the ‘Spirit of St. Bede’ that stays with us forever, that has made this day possible and we are blessed and grateful,” Davey said.

Pictures of the all-school prayer service next year will look much different than they do today, as the campus of St. Bede will be beautified with the new-

ly-constructed addition and be occupied by students and faculty eager to utilize the state-of-the-art science facilities and to gather in the college-feel commons.

The student commons will provide 1,500 square feet of space for students to study independently or in small groups.

Principal Michelle Mershon said this school year students will have the unique opportunity to take part in the day-to-day “building” progress of the addition by bringing the construction process into the classroom.

Bold & Curvy caters to plus size women, juniors Boutique opens in downtown LaSalle

BY LYLE GANTHER lganther@bcrnews.com LASALLE — Bold & Curvy, a boutique in downtown LaSalle, stocks clothing for plus-size women and juniors.

Andrea Poole is the owner of the recently opened business at 199 Gooding St., LaSalle.

“I am my own customer. I have tried on all the clothes myself, so I can give customers a real honest opinion on them. I can tell them they fit because I have worn them,” she said.

Poole stocks junior sizes XL-6X and shoes 6 1/2 to 11.

“We stress body positivity,” she added. “We also have nice quality jewelry and wide calf boots.”

Poole has been in retail management for years and decided she has the experience to run her own business when putting together all the jobs she has had over the years.

“I wanted to have my own store for plussize women, so they can come into a store and feel comfortable because the items are just for us, not one small rack like other stores,” added Poole.

“Sixty-seven percent of women wear plus-sizes,

but there is a huge disparity for plus-size people to wear clothes with what is available on the market,” indicated Poole, who grew up in Ottawa, but now lives in Lostant.

“You don’t have to settle for what there is in other stores. You can get what you want here.”

Bold & Curvy’s hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and closed on Sunday.

Transforming LaSalle’s Kaskaskia Hotel from the inside out

Progress and precision work move forward inside historic hotel LASALLE — Historic preservation is an art, and inside the 100-yearold walls of LaSalle’s Kaskaskia Hotel, master craftsmen have been proving just that.

With care and a keen eye for detail, plasterers have begun cleaning and restoring portions of the ornamental plaster work that crowns the hotel’s grandest rooms. It’s part of a study being conducted within the hotel to determine the best way to save some of the building’s most notable features.

“The plaster details are a major part of what past hotel guests remember, and what our future guests will see, so this work will help us achieve an elegant, contemporary,

yet classic personality for the renovated hotel,” says the Kaskaskia developer’s in-house architect, Peter Vidal.

The process involves finding and cleaning undamaged portions of a design feature, creating a rubber mold, and carefully installing and finishing newly-molded portions by hand.

“It’s precision work, and that’s the way much of this renovation will go,” said Vidal. “With construction season, people expect to see big machinery and heavy equipment in and around the property, but this isn’t a project where you’ll see a lot of demolition or other typical signs of construction. This is about making this historic

The bulk of this work is taking place inside the Wedgewood Room, where people enjoyed elegant dinners and Sunday brunch for much of the hotel’s history. The Wedgewood Room has the most delicate plaster details in the building. The plaster technique is also being used to repair Corinthian-style columns inside the hotel’s Side Bar. Plaster restoration and replacement is a significant item in the overall development budget.

Kaskaskia developers aim to have the hotel completed by 2019. Development plans include a boutique hotel and an events and conference center.

Rubber molds are created from undamaged portions of ornamental plaster. These will be used to create replacements for damaged sections.
