Everyone loves a parade!

The Homestead Festival parade in 2013 draws thousands to Princeton’s Main Street for one of the best parades in the area. Likewise, the 2014 parade will be just as exciting with local bands like the Bureau Valley High School Marching Band pictured here. There will also be some favorites from years gone by, plenty of floats, class reunions, and much more. The parade steps off from the north end of Princeton at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and ends at Soldiers and Sailors Park. The Homestead Festival parade is just one of many activities scheduled for this upcoming weekend.

There will be something for everyone — old and young alike, including plenty of entertainment, food, car shows, the famous pork barbecue, fun and more. A special tribute to Princeton’s own Richard Widmark will also be happening throughout the weekend as well, as this year would have marked the famous actor’s 100th birthday.

River Valley Players present ‘The Marvelous Wonderettes’

Columbus ships Pinta and Nina to dock in Peoria

Revue features music of the 1950s-’60s HENRY — “The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a funny, glitter song-anddance revue which features lots of pop classics like “Lollipop,” “Stupid Cupid,” “Lipstick On Your Collar,” “Mr. Lee,” “It’s My Party,” “R.E.S.P.E.C.T.” and many more.

The revue begins in 1958 where the audience meets four Springfield High School teens performing a show for their classmates on prom night. The four are good friends, but a competitive theme emerges when all four girls are announced as candidates for prom queen. The audience will elect the winner.

The second part of the show is set a decade later as part of a class reunion following the rock revolution which provides the backdrop for the girls to

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” stars Becky Martin, Christine Gaspardo, Deanne Crook and Samantha Farb, who all have boundless energy and talent for singing the close harmonies characteristic of “girls group” singers popular during the ‘50s and ‘60s.

This show is sure to please all Baby Boomers as well as good family fun guaranteed to entertain audiences of all ages.

“The Marvelous Wonderettes” is a special fundraising show to be presented Oct. 24-26 and Nov. 1-2.

Tickets for the show are $15 each, refreshments can be purchased prior to the per-

formance and during intermission. Oct. 24 is family and friends night; for this performance only, families may purchase a reduced children’s ticket of $10 for a child under the age of 12.

Friday and Saturday performances will begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday will begin at 2 p.m. For tickets, contact 309-364-2587.

PEORIA — On Sept.

12, the “Pinta” and the “Nina,” replicas of Columbus’ ships, will open in Peoria. The ships will be docked at The Landing, next to the Spirit of Peoria, 2-14 Main Street until their departure early Monday morning Sept. 22.

The Nina was built completely by hand and without the use of power tools. Archaeology magazine called the ship “the most historically correct Columbus replica ever built.” The Pinta was recently built in Brazil to accompany the Nina on all of her travels. She is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the 15th Century.

Both ships tour together as a new and enhanced “sailing museum” for the purpose of educating the public and school children on the “caravel,”

a Portuguese ship used

by Columbus and many early explorers to discover the world.

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walkaboard, self-guided tour.

Admission charges are $8 for adults, $ 7 for seniors, and $6 for students 5-16.

Children 4 and under are free. The ships are open every day from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations are necessary.

The ships arrive on Sept. 11, and there will be a private viewing of the ships for the media after docking.

Timber Lake Playhouse announces summer 2015 season MOUNT CARROLL — Timber Lake Playhouse, the professional summer theatre of Northwest Illinois, and executive director James Beaudry announced their 54th consecutive summer season for 2015 on July 19. The theatre company, which has more than 20,000 visitors annually, announced a lineup of six mainstage shows. Two productions for young people will be announced shortly.

The season will begin June 4, 2015 with the musical “Hairspray.” Winner of eight Tony Awards including Best Musical, “Hairspray” is a familyfriendly musical piled bouffant high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen Tracy Turnblad has only one desire — to dance on the popular Corny Collins Show. When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star, using her newfound power to dethrone the reigning teen queen, win the affections of heartthrob Link Larkin and integrate a TV network, all without denting her ‘do.

Following “Hairspray,” is a big-hearted new play called “The Big Meal,” which premiered in Chicago in 2011 and tells the extraordinary story of an ordinary family. Somewhere in America, in a typical suburban restaurant on a typical night, Sam and Nicole first meet. Sparks fly. And so begins an expansive tale that traverses five generations of a modern family, from first kiss to final goodbye. Though it pre-

miered in 2011, “The Big Meal” already feels like a classic. In the spirit of Thornton Wilder’s plays, “Our Town” and “The Long Christmas Dinner,” “The Big Meal” is humorous, human and ambitious. Pulitzer Prize winner Annie Baker recently called it “The greatest play ever written.”

In July, for the first time ever, TLP will present the Broadway musical “Peter Pan.” Since 1955, when Mary Martin first took to the air as Peter, the show has become a must-see classic around the world.

Beloved by generations, the playhouse will offer additional matinees of the productions to accommodate families.

The fourth show and second play of the season is “Greater Tuna,” the hilarious comedy about the third smallest town in Texas, where the Lion’s Club is too liberal and Patsy Cline never dies. The eclectic band of citizens that make up this town are portrayed by only two performers, making this send-up of life in

rural America even more delightful as they depict all of the inhabitants of Tuna — men, women, children and animals. The action takes place in the early 1980s, though nothing in Tuna has changed since then, anyway.

In 2003, film director Tim Burton transformed the novel “Big Fish” into a beloved film starring Albert Finney, Ewan McGregor and Jessica Lange. Last year, the story was turned in a glorious new Broadway musical.

TLP will present the area premiere of this show in a special production starring long time TLP favorite Karl Hamilton, last seen as the Rev. Moore in

“Footloose,” and Elizabeth Haley, who starred as his wife, Vi Moore. The two are also married in real life.

“Big Fish” tells the story of Edward Bloom, a traveling salesman whose incredible, larger-thanlife stories thrill everyone around him — most of all, his adoring wife Sandra. But their son Will is determined to find the truth behind his father’s fantastic tales. Overflowing with heart, humor and spectacular stage magic as

Edward’s stories come to life, it is an extraordinary new musical that reminds us why we love going to the theatre — for an experience richer, funnier and bigger than life itself.

Executive Director James Beaudry, who brought his inventive style to “Joseph and The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” directs and choreographs.

The final production of the 2015 season will be Roger Miller’s “Big River: The Adventures of

Huckleberry Finn.” Propelled by an award winning score from Roger Miller, the king of country music, this journey down the mighty Mississippi provides a brilliantly theatrical celebration of pure Americana. Twain’s timeless classic is played out by actor-musicians to the sound of country and bluegrass as irrepressible Huck Finn helps his friend Jim, a slave, escape to freedom. Their adventures are hilarious, suspenseful and heartwarming, bringing to life our favorite characters from the novel.

Story time, will be geared toward children 3 to 5 years old. The program will begin at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 18. It will be held at the same time every Wednesday in the children’s department. Children will enjoy stories, sing songs and explore and learn experiments and crafts.

Chicago is only one aspect of the fascinating history of Illinois railroads. Simon Cordery surveys the expansion of the railroad industry in the Land of Lincoln,

demonstrates how the Prairie State fits into the pattern of national railroad development and explores the national political significance of the history of railroads in Illinois, in the 19th Century.

Crossroads of a Nation: The Hidden History of Illinois’ Railroads is the sixth program in the 2014-15 Putnam County Public Library District humanities program series, Traces & Byways Discovered. Spray a large baking sheet with nonstick cooking spray. Brush squash with olive oil and sprinkle with salt. Place squash, cut side up, on prepared baking sheet. Bake until tender, 25 to 30 minutes. Let cool on pan until cool enough to handle, approximately 10 minutes. Spoon out center of squash with seeds.

Leaving shell intact. In the bowl of a food processor, combine squash pulp, 1 cup tortilla chips, sour

cream and 1/2 cup cheese, pulsing to combine. Spoon into squash shells. Return to baking sheet. Sprinkle with remaining 1 cup tortilla chips and remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake until cheese has melted, 8 to 10 minutes. Serve immediately.

Stuffed Acorn Squash 2 medium acorn squash, halved and seeds removed 4 slices bacon, diced 1 medium onion, trimmed and diced 1 Granny Smith apple, peeled, cored and diced 1 pound ground beef 1/4 cup packed dark brown sugar 1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice 1/2 teaspoon dried sage 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 2 tablespoons dry bread crumbs Heat oven to 350°. Place squash halves, cut side down, on a rimmed dish.

Add 2 cups water to dish and bake at 350° for 40 minutes. Meanwhile cook bacon in a large nonstick skillet over medium

Place squash slices in the basket of a steamer with approximately 1 inch water in the saucepan bellow. Bring water to a boil and steam squash until tender when pierced with a fork, about 12 minutes.

While squash is cooking, combine egg, mayonnaise, chives, basil, thyme, salt and pepper in a medium bowl. Add steamed squash and 3/4 cup cheese to mayonnaise mixture, stirring gently to combine. Pour into a 9-by-9-inch baking dish and top with remaining 1/2 cup cheese. Bake for 30 minutes.

What is your favorite school memory?

“I went to the Hendricks School north of Tonica. It was a one-room school.

All eight grades were in one room. It’s still there yet. If you go north out of Tonica, it’s still there.

Then I spent my last year at Cedar Point with Gerry Ferrai.”

Shirley Brovelli, Oglesby “I can remember a fight in a classroom at Putnam County High School once when I subbed for a teacher. That had to be over 40 years ago. The kids were local kids that are still around the area. We were right across from Joe Massino’s office (principal of PCHS) in the home ec room. I started to step in, dumb me. I got kicked, so that ended that. Then I decided this is enough of this, and I darted across the hall because of course nobody else would. In the meantime, this other young man stepped in, had the fight stopped and by the time we got back in the classroom; everything was quiet. Everyone was back in their seats and Joe said, ‘I’ll talk to you two boys later, but just keep in mind that if you are going to fight, take it across the street!’

“I went to Cedar Point School until I graduated, and there was only four in our graduating class.

That’s what I remember.

I then went to L-P high school.”

Gerry Ferrai, Oglesby “My favorite was when I went to Washington School in Oglesby. They had a two-story school, and on the outside, they had those big tubes that were the fire escape. The best experience was the first time you went down one of the tubes because they told you the boys were waiting for you at the bottom, so everybody had their skirts tucked in.

That’s what I remember.”

Pat Anderson, Oglesby “I always heard a lot of excuses why kids didn’t have their homework done. My favorite came from this little cherub in elementary school, who had this devilish streak.

He said, ‘Well I did it, but it got hijacked.’ I said, ‘What?’ He said, ‘I made it into an airplane and I was throwing it, and it got hijacked.’ That was my favorite why I didn’t have it done story.”

“My favorite school memory was walking to school with friends. Then we would always stop in to this little store that catered to the students. The school I went to had two buildings, one had kindergarten, first and second. The other building housed the rest of the grades. We just always enjoyed walking to school together. This was in Cicero. We all walked to school, even though it was four blocks away. We would pick up other kids as we went along. We even walked home for lunch.”

Betty Lou Willand, Oglesby “I taught kindergarten like 100 years ago. This was when corporal punishment laws came out.

No corporal punishment was allowed at this time. I got a note from one of the mothers that was written on this little scrap of paper and it said, ‘I don’t want no capital punishment on my child.’ I said, ‘You don’t have to worry; we don’t reward capital punishment to anybody here.’

So she didn’t understand the difference between corporal and capital I guess. I wish I had saved that note.”

“I remember the first day I went to a new school; I was only in first grade. We had moved in the night before, and I had insisted on going to school. My dad told me that this was OK, and that the school was right up this road, up the street that we were living on. So I was put out a different door; so I walked up and down the wrong street.

Of course I was confused because there were so many options; and I started to cry. Somebody came and brought me into a school, into the lunchroom. Pretty soon the police came in with my dad. They had fed me while I was there. The next day my dad walked me to the right school. It was only a few blocks away.”

SPRING VALLEY — The Spring Valley Walleye Club will sponsor its Take a Vet Fishing Day on Saturday, Sept. 20.

Everyone will meet at Time on the Water bait shop at 8 a.m. to meet their boat captain. A complimentary breakfast

Underground Railroad 5K PRINCETON — The 22nd annual Underground Railroad 5K Run/Walk will be Saturday, Sept. 13, in conjunction with the Homestead Festival beginning and ending at the Metro Center in Princeton.

Registration is at 7 a.m. with the race to follow at 8 a.m.

This year’s event will include a Kiddie Fun Run for children ages 5-12 that starts at 10 a.m. It is free.

Holy Trinity 5K Walk/Run

CHERRY — The 2014 Holy Trinity Cherry stewardship team will host its second annual 5K Fun Walk/Run to Benefit the LaSalle Veteran’s Home. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Cherry city park with sign up beginning at 7:30 a.m., opening ceremonies at 9 a.m. and race start at 9:15 a.m.

Last year, HTC was able to raise funds that were used to obtain resources and equipment to assist the LaSalle Veterans Home with what it stated was its greatest challenge, increasing and enhancing resident /patient mental and social stimulus.

A number of these items were obtained and the benefits to the residents was great.

Items of particular benefit were I-Pads that had been needed for various exercises and uses in the Alzheimer unit. The I-Pad turned out to have additional useful applications for the residents.

Although providing these resources was of great benefit to the residents and patients, possibly the greatest benefit from HTC’s initial walk/run fundraiser last year was raising the awareness of the needs of the home.

“Although it is true that we are government funded,” says John Koehler, administrator at the veteran’s home, “we have a long list of items that we need here that are not directly funded for us. We are dependent upon donations and gifts for these important items. Not many people know that and we appreciate Holy Trinity Cherry getting that word out for us.”
