Homestead Festival weekend is upon us The Homestead Festival weekend is fast approaching. A street concert kicks off the festivities Thursday evening, with the rest of the many activities set for Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

There will be no shortage of things to do during this annual festival. Whether you enjoy the well-known Homestead Festival parade (pictured at right), those wonderful pork chop sandwiches, the craft show, the entertainment, the food, the car show or a class reunion, there will be something for all ages throughout the entire weekend.

This year’s theme for the festival is Glory Days, and many events are being planned around that theme.

Of course, the highlight for many during the Homestead Festival weekend is the parade. More than 7,000 people are expected to gather up and down Princeton’s Main Street to watch the parade, which is set to step off from North Main Street at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, and end at Soldiers and Sailors Park on South Main Street.

According to the Homestead Festival website, Princeton High School class reunions include those from the classes of 1956, 1971, 1981, 1996, 2001, 2006 and 2011.

Gary Swanson is 2016 Homestead grand marshal

PRINCETON — His dedication to the community and willingness to go the extra mile to put a smile on someone’s face is what earned Gary “Frog” Swanson the honor of being this year’s Bureau County Homestead Festival grand marshal.

Some may recognize Swanson as the man behind the sound system at various area events or consider themselves a fan of his music with the Generics Goodies Band. or maybe one can still remember when he used to patrol the streets as a Princeton police officer.

Under his many hats, Swanson has accomplished many great tasks for his community and continues to keep the community groovin’, thriving and having fun.

“I like to give back to the community because I’ve been successful in my careers, and I’m glad to be able to do it. It’s important to keep the community growing and keeping things happening,” he said.

Swanson was born and raised in Princeton and is a 1965 graduate of Princeton High School. He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1970,

where he earned a degree in industrial technology with an emphasis in electronics and radio television broadcasting.

In 1974, he married his wife, Janet. They have one daughter and two grandchildren.

Throughout the years, Swanson worked parttime as a polisher at Jostens, was a truck driver for Haussler Construction, a bus driver for Princeton Elementary Schools, and an engineer and announcer at WZOE radio. Swanson also worked as a dispatcher at the Bureau County Sheriff’s Office before serving as an officer for the Tiskilwa Police Department from 1971 to 1973. After finding an appreciation for law enforcement, Swanson went through police training at the University of Illinois and in 1974, he accepted a patrolman job with Princeton Police Department. During his time there, he earned numerous certificates in police training and was promoted to investigator before retiring in 2004.

As a retiree, Swanson continues to work parttime at the Bureau County Courthouse in security and also owns GES Snow Removal Services and GES Sound.

Concert to kick off Homestead Festival

PRINCETON — Princeton Tourism is presenting “Glory Days,” a Springsteen Tribute Band. The downtown Main Street concert, which will be held between Marion and Peru streets, is set from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8.

The music begins at 6:30 p.m. and kicks off the annual Homestead Festival, which begins the following day on Friday, Sept. 9. A variety of food and beverages will be served at the event.

The band Glory Days began in 2008 as a tribute to the music of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. As a Springsteen tribute, they have played throughout the Midwest throughout the past few years at such events like Taste of Chicago, Ribfest in Naperville, The Castle Theater, The Lincoln Theater, Decatur Celebration and many more, along with many corporate functions.

During the past two years, the band has expanded to include classic rock, Americana and Funk.

a passion for music. In the late ‘60s, he played in a band with Keith Knudson who went on to play drums with the Doobie Brothers. Throughout the years, Swanson has been part of several bands aside from The Generics Goodies Band, including Shillings, Junction, Coachmen and Alibi.

Swanson also built a recording studio where his current band and other local singers have recorded music.

Around Halloween and Christmas, Swanson and his family are the ones who drive around town with blow-up displays on a trailer and play fun music to get families in the spirit of the holiday.

“Our pay is when the kids and parents come running to the float for candy and when the whole neighborhood starts dancing and grooving to the music,” he said.

During several community events during the years, Swanson has provided sound and entertainment for all sorts and sizes.

You can start your weekend off right by viewing the window displays in area businesses. There will be museum tours of the Newell-Bryant House at 109 Park Avenue West and Owen Lovejoy Homestead Tours on East Peru Street. You’ll want to plan your dinner around the pulled pork barbecue dinner and ice cream social at Soldiers and Sailors Park, where you can also enjoy twilight horse-drawn wagon rides, the Bureau County Chorus, the Prairie Arts Council “Art in Agriculture” exhibit and Homestead Festival announcements at Soldiers and Sailors Park.

Rain-out location is the Bureau County Fairgrounds.

There will also be a Jaycees’ co-ed bags tournament at Darius Miller Park.

After dinner and all the other fun, bring your lawn chairs and relax to the Black Top Hop featuring the Generics from 7 to 9 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Park. You’ll also enjoy seeing “The Law and Jake Wade,” starring Richard Widmark at the Apollo Theater — one show only, and the doors open at 8 p.m. with the movie beginning at 9 p.m.

After all the hoopla, kick back with some cold drinks and more music by Abby Normal at the Jaycees’ beer garden at Darius Miller Park. The gates open at 5 p.m., and the entertainment begins at 8:30 p.m. and runs until 12:30 a.m.

The making of a parade 45th annual Homestead Festival parade ready to step off Saturday

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Homestead Festival parade is an event enjoyed by thousands each year.

The well-known display, which proceeds down Princeton’s Main Street, offers a little something for everyone — whether you enjoy loud sirens, paying your respects to veterans, seeing classmates from high school or dancing to the beats provided by the South Shore Drill Team — the Homestead parade provides a little taste of all those things and more.

What does it take to plan this spectacle?

Each year, the parade committee gets together at the end of May to begin planning, once the grand marshal and festival theme is announced.

The committee includes Katie Dye, Terry Madsen, Paula Lowe and Deb Kirley.

First, an invitation letter is sent out to all the previous parade entries from the year before.

Around the same time, the Homestead Festival website gets updated for the year, and those interested in signing up to be an entry in the

parade are advised to download a form on the website that asks for a description of the entry and what sort of room with be needed in a line-up slot.

Promotion for the parade is also done when committee members visit high schools and organizations to formally invite them to join in on the event. The Homestead parade doesn’t happen for free. Sponsorships are also collected from area businesses and organizations interested in helping bring back the larger attractions in the parade. These include the Jesse White Tumblers, South Shore Drill Team of Chicago and Metropolitan Youth Drill Team of the Quad Cities.

Later on in the planning stages, three people who remain anonymous are chosen to judge the entries in the line-up for various categories. By this time, parade entry applications begin to file in, and the parade committee sits down to determine a line-up.

Madsen said each year the committee likes to switch things up to provide a new entertaining show.

He said sometimes there can be arguments and disagreements on which entry should go where, but those

differences are always resolved.

A patriotic front is always set it place to lead the parade.

Usually that front includes veterans, police vehicles, the Freedom Flag and the grand marshal.

Once a line-up is determined, the work is about finished until the Friday evening before the parade.

On that day, the committee meets at the set-up locations and marks out where each entry will line-up and how they will file onto Main Street. A map of the entry locations is drawn up that night and is passed out to those in the parade at checkin, so everyone knows which spot to meet for line-up.

Saturday morning, the day of the parade, begins with the committee members ensuring all parking lots being used in the line-up are cleared and ready for people to meet. Judging of the floats take place around 11:30 a.m., and winners are notified and are asked to place a banner with the title or category their float has won.

Float winners are provided a plaque donated by A&M Products.

About 10 minutes before the parade begins, police begin barricading roads, and the entries rev their engines

Sunday, Sept. 11

Bureau County Metro Center; registration begins at 7 a.m., and race time is 8:30 a.m. A Kiddie Fun Run, which is free, begins at 8 a.m. The event costs $20 for those who register early and $30 on the day of the race.

The kids will enjoy the Children’s Fun Fair in the Heartland Bank main parking lot on South Pleasant Street. A pie baking contest is at Soldiers and Sailors Park. Bring your entry to the park by 9 a.m. Stop by the Princeton Post Office to get your special Homestead Festival 2016 postage stamp cancellation between 9 a.m. and noon. The Beta Sigma Phi Arts and Crafts Show is on the courthouse lawn from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Tours will be available throughout the day at the Princeton Public Library, the Owen Lovejoy Homestead and Princeton High School. See the Homestead website for times.

Plan your lunch and dinner around the Bureau County 4-H Clubs’ BBQ at Soldiers and Sailors Park. There will be a drive-through service at the Bureau County Fairgrounds.

Want to get a birds-eye view of the festival? Take a helicopter ride from noon to sunset, departing at Sullivan’s Foods on North Main Street.

The Homestead Festival parade steps off at 1:30 p.m. on North Main Street and travels to the South Main.

Need some more entertainment? The Eddie Shaw and the Wolfgang Blues Concert is from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Alexander Park; a Root Beer Float Garden and Outdoor Movie Night is at the Evangelical Covenant Church beginning at 7:30 p.m.; and the Lounge Puppets will perform at the Jaycees’ beer garden at Darius Miller. The Jaycees will also hold another bags tournament at Darius Miller — registration is at 5:30 p.m., and the bags start flying at 6 p.m.

Start your day off right with the annual Princeton Lions Club/Moose Pancake Breakfast at the Moose Lodge on North Euclid Avenue from 7 a.m. to noon.

The annual Jazz Worship Service is at 10:30 a.m. at St. Matthews Lutheran Church on Dover Road.

There will be a flea market at the Bureau County Fairgrounds from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Beta Sigma Phi Arts and Crafts Show continues on the courthouse lawn.

Love those old classic cars, trucks and hot rods? Head to South Main Street from 8 to 3 p.m. to see the 36th annual Homestead Festival Car Show. You won’t be disappointed.

Plan to eat lunch at the Bureau County 4-H Clubs’ BBQ at Soldiers and Sailors Park from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

What about Rover and Fluffy? Take the four-legged friends to the Princeton Animal Care Clinic from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. for the Tri-County Human Society Pet Fest 2016.

There’s a children’s tractor pull from noon to 2:30 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Park, and Miller’s Petting Zoo will also be at Soldiers and Sailors from noon to 3 p.m.

Tours will continue at the Owen Lovejoy Homestead from 1 to 4 p.m.

Do you make the best ribs on the grill? Bring your grill to the Central Bank parking lot on South Main Street to test your skills among the rest for the sixth annual BBQ Rib Cook-Off. Cash prizes will be awarded.

And speaking of cash, if you’ve bought a Homestead Festival 50/50 raffle ticket, head on over to Main Street across from the Apollo to hear if your name is drawn. The winning ticket is drawn at 3:30 p.m. Last year’s winner won more than $7,500.

This year’s parade This year, there are 127 entries for the parade. Kirley, who keeps track of all the entries, said some years the parade loses some entries, and other years they gain entries. It just depends on the year, she said.

But overall, compared to year’s past, the Homestead Parade has grown steadily in size.

“We like to think it’s because more people are

getting involved,” Madsen said.

While it takes a lot of organization and planning to put together this event, the highly positive feedback the committee gets each year helps motivate the volunteers to come back and lend a helping hand once again.

“When you drive down Main Street Friday afternoon and see the chairs already lining the street, you think they must have like last

year’s parade, and that really makes you feel good,” Madsen said.

With this year being the 15th anniversary of Sept. 11, Madsen said there could be an opportunity for people to pay their respects.

“We hope people come out and remembers it’s a fun, family event and in keeping with the Glory Days theme, we hope people show their appreciation for the veterans, police and first responders,” he said.

VFW announces kick-off of annual $30,000 scholarship SPRINGFIELD — State Commander W. Dave Stout of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Illinois announced the kick-off of this year’s VFW’s Voice of Democracy Scholarship competition.

Local high school students have the opportunity to compete for thousands of dollars in scholarships and a trip to Washington, D.C. Students must write and record a threeto-five minute essay on the selected theme using an audio CD or flash drive and present their recording, typed essay and completed entry form to their local VFW Post

by Nov. 1. The 2016-17 theme selected is “My Responsibility to America.” Students begin by competing at the local post level with an entry deadline of Nov. 1. Post winners compete at the district level with the winner advancing to the state competition. All speeches are judged based on the sound recording submitted.

All state first-place winners receive a

four-day trip to Washington, D.C., and the chance to compete for their share of more than $150,000 in scholarships. The national first-place winner receives a $30,000 college scholarship.

The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) started the Voice of Democracy Scholarship program in 1947. The VFW became a national sponsor in the late 1950s and assumed sole responsibility for the program in 1961. The competition was created to provide students grades 9-12 the opportunity to express themselves in regard to democratic ideas and principles. Around 40,000 students participate in the competition each year and VFW awards more than $2 million in scholarships every year.

Timber Lake favorites return for Patsy Cline musical MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse, the professional summer theatre of northwest Illinois, presents a special musical production, “Always … Patsy Cline,” Sept. 9-18. The popular musical will play during two weekends for eight performances only.

“Always … Patsy Cline” is more than a tribute to the legendary country singer who died tragically at age 30 in a plane crash in 1963. The show is based on a true story about Cline’s friendship with a fan from Houston named Louise Seger, who befriended the star in a Texas honky-tonk in l961, and continued a correspondence with Cline until her death.

The musical play, complete with down home country humor, true emotion and even some audience participation, includes many of Cline’s unforgettable hits such as “Crazy,” “I Fall to Pieces,” “Sweet Dreams” and “Walking After Midnight” — 27 songs in all. The show’s title was inspired by Cline’s letters to Seger, which were consistently signed “Love Always, … Patsy Cline.”

The cast includes Harmony France as Patsy Cline and Sarah Larson as Louise.

France has been seen at TLP in “Almost Heaven: The Songs of John Denver” earlier this year, and she was featured in “Big River” in 2015. Larson was a resident performer in 2013, playing Marian in “The Music Man.” She was also featured in “A Chorus Line,” “Tuesdays With Morrie,

“Unnecessary Farce” and “Spamalot.”

“Always…Patsy Cline” has enjoyed great success all over the United States, including a successful run off-Broadway.

It has been one of the most produced musicals in America according to American Theatre Magazine. “Always … Patsy Cline” has also been enjoyed internationally by audiences in Canada, the UK and Australia.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the playhouse will present Felix & Fingers Dueling Pianos for one night only. Felix & Fingers last graced the TLP stage in May 2015 to a near sold-out audience. The performance begins at 7 p.m. with a cash bar opening at 6:30 p.m.

Timber Lake Playhouse has also announced next summer’s 56th season.

June 2017 will bring new productions of Disney and Cameron Mackintosh’s “Mary Poppins,” Eugene O’Neill’s “Ah Wilderness!,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s “Evita,” an adaptation of “Scapino!” by Jim Dale, Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel,” and “Little Shop of Horrors.” Discounted subscriptions for all six shows are available now.

Tickets for “Always … Patsy Cline” are $17-$25. Dueling Pianos tickets are $20.

The unit’s chairman, Holly Flanagan, and committee awarded first place to Arlington Stiennen, an eighthgrade student of Kim Michael at Ladd Grade School. The Americanism Essay contest topic was “Should there be term limits for our U.S. Senators and Representatives?”

Stiennen went on to win the 16th district and third division and was

awarded first in state at the American Legion Auxiliary convention on July 14. He read his essay to the entire attending convention auxiliary members. His family was also in attendance.

Tickets for the upcoming Rip’s fundraiser on Monday, Sept. 19, will be available. Anyone interested and eligible is welcome to attend the meeting.

‘Sweet as Sin’

By Terri Schlichenmeyer The last meal you had was very satisfying.

Everything was made the way you like it, served efficiently, and pleasing to your palate. What Terri you ate was Schlichenmeyer delicious and it almost filled you up, leaving just enough room for one more bite — and in “Sweet as Sin” by Susan Benjamin, you’ll read about that which you might’ve chosen.

Susan Benjamin’s mother hated candy — which was unfortunate, since Benjamin’s father loved the stuff. As a child, Benjamin sided with her father and now it’s her livelihood: she’s a candy saleswoman and historian who says that while sweet treats have been around for millennia — paleontologists once found 9,000-year-old ABC gum — the history of candy is “a convergence of many cultures and experiences …”

Native Americans, for instance, knew all about sweets long before Europeans arrived. They found that corn and maple syrup, properly processed, made dandy candy and that fruit, as Benjamin’s brother says, “is pretty much the same as candy.” Europeans expounded on those ideas and learned to make root beer.

As humans cultivated sharper cravings, the world leaped to satisfy them: from a French slave, we got cheaper vanilla; from Mesoamericans, we got chocolate, and both were once considered aphrodisiacs. Asia gave the world marshmallow. The peanut, it’s believed, came from Africa. Sugar cane, says Benjamin, began in India and was at least partly the reason slaves were brought to U.S. shores.

Though cacao was “most likely” used by Southwestern Native Americans, chocolate

grapples with the question on whether or not to accept an invitation to join the American delegation to the new United Nations. As she considers her options, she shares stories of her childhood, her marriage to Franklin D. Roosevelt, her work during World War I, Franklin’s bout with polio, coming to the White House in 1933, World War II and Franklin’s death.

As she speaks, she reveals the warm, honest and passionate First Lady and stateswoman she was.

LAMOILLE — Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday, which is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017;

March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is looking for Walnut High School annuals. The years needed are: 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944 and 1945. You don’t even have to donate them permanently; we would just like to borrow them. We are having all our annuals put on CDs for easier reference.

We would only need them for about 8-12 weeks. You would get your annuals returned as soon as the conversion is complete.

We are collecting used printer cartridges and cellphones. If you did not return your old cellphone when you purchased a new phone, bring it in to the library. We do get money when we send them in to be recycled.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m.

Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815-659-3283 for information. (The fax number is the same as the phone number).

LADD — The library is sponsoring its new perpetual programs. These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library anytime a patron stops in. No registration. No set time.

Stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

The library sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Bags tournament PRINCETON — The Princeton Jaycees Bags Tournament will be held Friday, Sept. 9, and Saturday, Sept. 10, as part of the Homestead Festival. Registration takes place at 5:30 p.m. at Darius Miller Park and the bags will fly at 6 p.m. each night.

Underground Railroad 5K PRINCETON — Registration begins at 7 a.m. for the 2016 Underground Railroad 5K at the Bureau County Metro Center. The race starts at 8:30 a.m. with the Kiddie Fun Run starting at 8 a.m.

Coates Invitational PRINCETON — The newly renamed Gary Coates Cross Country Invitational will be Saturday, Sept. 10, at Zearing Park in Princeton.

The meet was named in honor of the late former PHS coach who passed away this spring.

This year the meet will involve 21 area teams and will begin at 9 a.m. with the frosh/soph boys running two miles. The girls will run three miles at 9:25 a.m. followed by the varsity boys at 10 a.m. running three miles. An open run for boys and girls of two miles will begin at 10:30 a.m.

This year’s teams will represent high schools from Amboy, Bureau Valley, Deer Creek-Mackinaw, Fieldcrest, Hall, Kewanee, LaSalle-Peru, Lowpoint-Washburn/ Roanoke-Benson, Mendota, Mercer County, Morris, Newman Central, Ohio, Orion, Princeton, Rock Falls, Rockridge, Sandwich, St Bede, Sherrard and St Bede.

The invitational awards will be presented at 11:15 a.m.

Annawan Canal Ambush ANNAWAN — The Annawan Canal Ambush Mini-Tri and 5K will take place Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Mini-Triathlon at 10 a.m. consists of a 1.5 mile run, 6.7 mile bike and 1.8 mile paddle. The 5K is an out and back along the Hennepin Canal, starting at 10:30 a.m. Runners will watch the Mini-Tri athletes paddle their way to the finish line.

Although large digital clocks will be present at the finish of both races, no official timing service is recorded. Only first-place finishers will be recorded and awarded prizes. Kids will complete a quarter mile paddle and fun run.

Parents are welcome to assist any child unfamiliar with a kayak, but volunteers are there to assist also.

A T-shirt, lunch, drink and live entertainment are included in the registration fee for all participants.

The finish-line party will consist of live entertainment provided by Tyler Duckworth.

Weekly prizes are given away on our Facebook page: Annawan Canal Ambush Mini-Triathlon & 5K. All proceeds will be donated to the newly constructed Howes Park Community Center in Annawan.

Striking Out Cancer ROCK FALLS — This year’s “Striking Out Cancer” coed tourney is Saturday, Oct. 1, at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

The tournament is held in memory of the late Anita Elgin, former president of Tampico Youth Softball.

Everyone is asked to wear as much pink as possible.

Entry fee is $100 per team and each team must field a minimum of two girls. Deadline for entry is Saturday, Sept 25.
