Vol. 12 No. 7

Homestead hoopla The 46th annual Homestead Festival kicks off Thursday, Sept. 7, and runs through Sunday, Sept. 10. Event-goers can expect to see many of the same events they’ve enjoyed year after year, plus some new events to help celebrate the weekend. One of the new events this year is from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday on Princeton’s South Main Street between and Marion and Peru streets, where the Bob Seger Tribute Band will perform as part of the city’s Down on Main Street Concert Series. The event is free, and food/beverages will be available for purchase. The crux of the festival kicks off Friday evening, where one can enjoy many of the events from the past, including horse-drawn carriage rides, the Jaycees beer garden, the announcement of the baby contest winners, a pulled pork barbecue dinner/ice cream social and more. New this year is the Princeton High School Hall of Fame inductee. Saturday will be jam packed with many events, including the Underground Railroad 5K race, another beer garden, children’s fun fair, a pie baking contest, Owen Lovejoy Homestead tours, the Prairie Arts Council photography exhibit, a blues concert. Perhaps Saturday’s feature event is the parade (pictured at right), where Main Street is lined with people, as the nearly two-hour parade steps off on Main Street. There will also be plenty to do on Sunday as the arts and crafts show continues at Soldiers and Sailors Park, the BBQ Rib Cook Off, Pet Fest, children’s tractor pull and of course the car show which lines South Main Street from Park Avenue to Peru Street. The event will end with the 50/50 drawing, where a lucky ticket winner will win a jackpot prize of thousands of dollars. The aforementioned activities are just a smattering of what to expect.
