St. Bede travels to Bureau Valley, and Hall hosts Morrison under those bright lights this week. Princeton gets an extra day’s rest, awaiting its Saturday evening kickoff at Sterling High School against Newman. Bureau Valley, St. Bede, Hall and Princeton all are members of the Three Rivers Conference, and Amboy-LaMoille-Ohio play out of the Northern Upstate Illinois Conference.

Princeton teen earns Girl Scout Gold Award

Katrina Rudolph of Princeton just finished a community service project at Valley Regional Cancer Center (VRCC) in Peru and earned her Girl Scout Gold Award — an achievement she’s been working toward for a year and one-half.

The Gold Award is equivalent to the Eagle Scout Award, by being the highest honor in a Girl Scout can earn.

Rudolph organized, designed and helped construct a peaceful outdoor courtyard at the cancer center for patients and their families to enjoy during treatments. The outdoor space is wheelchair accessible and includes seating under shade trees.

Rudolph spent more than a year selling memory bricks for the courtyard. The bricks are engraved to honor the survivors of cancer and remembers those who fought the fight.

Operation Courtyard, which was what Rudolph dubbed her project, was developed in honor of her grandfather who battled leukemia.

Now seeing the final product, Rudolph said she’s excited to see the thing she’s put her heart and soul into come together and be complete.

“I’m really proud of myself and everyone that’s helped me. In the beginning, I didn’t think these plans would actually happen, and now a year-and-a-half later, here we are and here it is,” she said.

Rudolph was quick to note the many people who volunteered their time and efforts to help see the project through. Josh Schnaiter at Prairie Nursery and Landscaping in Princeton was instrumental in guiding the project during the construction phase and members of the Utica Garden Club donated and helped plant perennials

to spruce up the courtyard.

An anonymous donor provided a peaceful pink stone water fountain. Another person donated lighting for the courtyard that allows it to shine even at night.

“As time went on, (the project) gained a bigger following, and more people wanted to help out with it,” Rudolph said.

Michell Heider, Rudolph’s troop leader and an employee at VRCC, said everyone is excited to see this project finished, and patients have already started using it. Yoga classes for patients in the courtyard are now ongoing. And an open house in honor of the project is in the works.

Rudolph said Operation Courtyard has taught her many things including responsibility and leadership skills.

“It was very much my project and I had a lot of help, but it was me that had to make the decisions and decide when I wanted to do work on it and make sure it was a priority,” she said.

And while a Gold Award project only requires 80 hours of work, Rudolph was proud to say she had recorded up to 180 hours.

“You put your heart and soul into something and then to see it finally put together — I’m really excited for the future and to see what happens with it,” she said.

The courtyard currently includes 75 bricks, and 80 more will be added soon.

Although Rudolph will no longer actively sell bricks for the courtyard, they will continue to be available for purchase. Bricks are $50 for family and friends and $100 for businesses. To order a brick, pick up an order form at VRCC or email goldawardoperationcourtyard@gmail.com.

At the turn of the 20th Century, radium became a miracle cure for almost any ailment and after World War I, several U.S. companies decided to use radium to paint watch dials. Nearly a century later, Suppan pays tribute to the girls exposed to this deadly toxin by telling their story in his book.

SPRING VALLEY — Thursday, Sept. 14, 6

p.m., the Melikin Puppets will return to the library to present “Dragon Feathers!” Merlin, the world’s foremost authority on Dragons, leads the cast through three classic dragon tales and invites selected members of the audience to participate in an authentic Chinese Dragon Dance. This program is free and for all ages.

Tuesday, Sept. 19, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the children’s library will host a pirate party in honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Pirate stories will be read along with crafts, games and snacks during the hour.

Starting September, the adult library will have an activity tables for individuals to participate in while at the library. There will be jigsaw puzzles, coloring pages and other puzzles.

Supplies will be provided by the library.

WYANET — The library is starting up its program season for the 2017-18 year. This year the library is adding a class for budding authors. On the second Tuesday of each month,

the library will be sponsoring a self-publishing class.

The first class will be on Tuesday, Sept. 12, at 1 p.m.

The library also features night computer classes with Ethan Sproul and James Smith of TestPoint II Technologies. These classes meet on the first and third Thursdays each month at 6 p.m. The classes are learning about Windows 10. There is one Windows 10 computer available with available WI-FI for personal laptops.

LAMOILLE — The library has many new titles to choose from. However, if it doesn’t have an item you’re looking for, ask the librarian if she can order them for you through interlibrary loan. We will do our utmost to find your item for you.

Want to join the fun of choosing a book award? If you are in Grades 4-8, you are eligible to read Rebecca Caudill Award nominees and have the opportunity to choose the winner from 20 nominees. Ask your librarian for details.

WALNUT — The library is asking patrons to donate empty ink cartridges and old cell phones. The library is able to recycle them for cash.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m.

TISKILWA — On the first Wednesday of each month at 4:30 p.m., the library’s book club for adults meets.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically. Cost is $5 per person.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services.

Mark your calendar Food service classes announced PRINCETON — The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Department is announcing two upcoming Food Service Sanitation Manager Certificate Classes provided at two locations.

The first class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 4 at the Bureau County Health Department, 526 Bureau Valley Parkway, Princeton. The exam will follow.

The second class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nov. 7 at the Marshall County Health Department, 319 Sixth St., Lacon. The exam will follow.

A minimum of 8 hours is required by the Illinois Department of Public Health for certification. The fee is $125 and fees are non-refundable. Payment is necessary at time of registration to guarantee a seat in class.

To Register at the Bureau or Marshall County Health Department between 8 a.m. and noon and 1 to 4 p.m.

Monday through Friday. Registration forms can be downloaded from at www.bpmchd.org.

A photo I.D. is required the day of class for the exam. Lunch will be on your own. Attendance the entire day is required to take the exam.

SPRING VALLEY — Former classmates, family and friends are invited to the first and only all alumni reunion of Community Consolidated School in Spring Valley, which closed its doors in 1970, on Sept. 9.

“We are hopeful for a large turnout,” said Carol (Jesiolowski) Maltas of Spring Valley, who graduated from the school in 1967. “At our last reunion, we came up with the idea to have an all alumni reunion in conjunction with our 50th reunion.”

Maltas indicated one of the challenges is finding someone from every class to represent each class at the reunion.

The reunion will be kicked off with a Mass celebrat-

ed by Father Bob Spilman and Father Duane LeClerq at noon at Immaculate Conception Church, which has been closed since June 2016, but will again be used for this special Mass.

Reunion activities will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. at Kirby Park in Spring Valley. Father LeClerq will give a blessing at 2:30 p.m. There will be three food vendors (Verucchis, Bula’s Food Truck, and Jose and Marie Cruz), a beer and wine garden sponsored by Spring Valley Fire Department, and live music from Dick Verucchi and Steve Sharp Band.

The oldest living graduates of the school may be Jane Kunkel of Spring Valley, who is 90 years old, who graduated in 1941, and Bea (Marenda) Verucchi of Spring Valley, who graduated in 1938. Both women are planning to attend this reunion, Maltas said.

The Immaculate Conception Church Free School was opened in 1886. It was replaced by a new school in 1888, which was torn down and replaced by a brick school in 1913. In 1968 and 1969, seventh- and eighth-grade classes were sent to public school at Lincoln and JFK. The school was first run by Dominican sisters of Minnesota and then the Franciscan nuns from Peoria took over later. Father John Power, who served from 18841907, started the first school and church. He also started St. Margaret’s Hospital by donating 24 acres of land and is buried in the cemetery by the hospital.

St. Margaret’s Hospital marks 20 years in OSF INI Comprehensive Stroke Center The OSF HealthCare Illinois Neurological Institute Comprehensive Stroke Center at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria is marking a milestone: 20 years of providing the highest level of stroke care throughout central and northern Illinois through its Stroke Network.

The OSF Illinois Neurological Institute (INI) Comprehensive Stroke Center is the epicenter of a stroke network that serves 20 hospitals including St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley.

Developed in 1997, the network was created to allow rural hospitals to provide the same urgent and quality of care by collaborating with a larger hospital.

When treating a stroke, time is crucial and this network is based on a joint effort to provide the right treatment in a time-sensitive window.

The establish of the OSF Stroke Network 20 years ago has helped citizens in central Illinois have the access to the best stroke care close to where they live.

These network hospitals have all been

able to offer clot buster to patients with stroke quickly, and if needed, transfer to the hub for advanced stroke diagnosis and care.

To celebrate the milestone, members of the Comprehensive Stroke Center team have been hosting celebrations and plaque presentations at each facility as a way to recognize and acknowledge their 20 years of collaboration and dedication to providing the best stroke care possible to their communities, and for trusting the INI Comprehensive Stroke Center to provide care that was not readily available in their hospitals.

Over the years, this collaboration provided cutting edge treatments to patients and developed one of the first “drip and ship” models where patients received timely and efficient treatment at their regional hospital, and were shipped to Peoria to provide more complex treatments and care.

This could only be possible through collaboration, trust and sharing of processes and protocols.

Businesswomen earn award Quilter’s Garden named Top Ten Quilt store PRINCETON — Local Princeton businesswomen Beth Rosene and Carol Keller have received the highest honor bestowed to quilt store owners.

Quilter’s Garden has been selected as a featured Top Ten Quilt store in North America in the fall 2017 Quilt Sampler magazine. The names of the selected shops are kept secret and were unveiled at the International Quilt Market last May. More than 3,000 quilt shops are eligible for this honor. A panel of quilt experts nar-

row down the applications to 10 featured shops for each issue. Quilter’s Garden and the other nine shops chosen have been photographed and interviewed by a team from Quilt Sampler magazine. A multipage profile of the shop will appear in the issue, which will be available at their store and also on newsstands in September.

Along with their article is a list of the “hot spots” in the area. The pair also designed an original quilt for the magazine. The full-sized pattern for the quilt will appear in the fall issue, and a kit of their project will be available at Quilter’s Garden. They are also the owners of Sassy Sisters, a women’s clothing store in Princeton.

Trinity 5K Run

PERU — This year’s IVCH Healthy Choices, Healthy You 5K run through the streets of Peru is scheduled to start at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 2, at Peru’s Washington Park. There will be a kids’ quarter mile fun run at 9:15 a.m.

Runners can sign up at www. runsignup.com and though the Starved Rock Runners web site www.starvedrockrunners.org.

Food and refreshments will be available after the race.

Other features include: T-shirts for the first 200 registered participants. Entry fees are $25 after Aug. 30 and on race day.
