Providing safe passage Crossing Guard Andy Anderson has been safely guiding school children across busy streets for the past four years. “I love it. I enjoy getting to meet all the kids every day,” said Anderson.

With area schools beginning the new year, there are once again large groups of children walking to and from school. Their journey often includes having to cross a busy street with heavy traffic.

Areas near schools are the most heavily traveled and require extra attention from drivers who risk not only hitting a child but also risk a collision with one of the many additional vehicles nearby driven by parents picking up or dropping off students at the school.

Fourth annual Wallace memorial weekend features history and family entertainment OTTAWA — The fourth annual General W.H.L. Wallace memorial weekend, titled LaSalle County at peace: the public and soldiers speak, will be held Saturday, Aug. 29, and Sunday, Aug. 30, at Pitstick Pavilion, 3401 N. State Route 23 in Ottawa.

This year’s living history program will include two battle re-enactments, wandering musicians, coopering and blacksmith demonstrations, a vintage baseball match and historical presentations.

Saturday’s events will include Union and Confederate encampments, training and military drills. Period demonstrations, sutlers, vendors and food booths will also be set up and the Battlefield Balladeers will be performing period music throughout the day.

At noon, two Catholic archbishops will debate the morality of slavery — both re-enactors are actual Catholic priests. Father Tim Koys from St. James on the Sag, Lemont, will portray Archbishop Baptist Purcell of Cincinnati for the Union and Father Bob Miller from St. Dorothy’s Catholic Church in Chicago will represent the Confederacy as an archbishop from Georgia.

At 7:45 p.m., a bonfire will be lit. In 1865, prominent Ottawans J. D. Caton, T. Lyle Dickey and Lorenzo Leland built a large fire on the North Bluff to inform the local citizens of the end of the Civil War. On the south side, John Hossack built a corresponding bonfire.

On Sunday, in addition to the Civil War encamp-

ment, period demonstrations and vendors, events will include an early morning church service for the soldiers with the public invited, a vintage baseball match between the Lemont Quarrymen and the Somonauk Blue Stockings at 11 a.m., and a second battle at 1p.m., with the Union forces victorious, will end the afternoon.

Admission, which includes both days, is $5 per person, with a family rate of $15. All money raised throughout the weekend will be used for the restoration and upkeep of the Dickey-Wallace Cemetery.

Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District announces fall tree, fish sales PRINCETON — The Bureau County Soil and Water Conservation District (BCSWCD) is holding its annual fall tree and fish sales.

A variety of potted conifers, hardwoods, shrubs and fruit trees are available. Some of the species offered include: Colorado Spruce, Bur Oak, Redbud, Lilac and Serviceberry. Fruit trees offered include a variety of apple, peach, pear, cherry and plum. Planting supplies such as tree shelters, fertilizer and

tree mats are also available for purchase. The deadline for tree orders is Friday, Sept. 9. Pickup will be Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26, at Warnecke Woods Natural Area in Princeton.

The various fish species available include: Bluegill, Black Crappie, Channel Catfish, Albino Catfish, Fathead Minnows, Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Sunfish, Redear, Hybrid Redear and Triploid Grass Carp. Most species are available in a variety of sizes. The deadline for

ordering Triploid Grass Carp is Friday, Oct. 10. All other fish orders are due

by Monday, Oct. 19. Pickup will be on Tuesday, Oct. 27, at the USDA Service Center, 312 E. Backbone Road, Princeton.

(StatePoint) When the school year begins, students need to quickly get back into the swing of things. Staying organized from day one can ease the transition.

While every individual needs to tweak his or her routine to best suit personality quirks and study habits, here are a few tried-and-true organization tricks that will work for most anyone:

Get scheduled While the word “bedtime” may have no meaning on summer vacation, during the school year, it’s vital. A regular sleep schedule can mean better quality sleep and higher alertness at school. Likewise, a morning routine can help students focus and prep for the day.

Family members should share their schedules with each other to ensure everyone gets to practice, club meetings and other activities on time.

Install a household calendar or bulletin board in a central location to ensure everyone stays in the know.

Stomp out clutter Lockers and backpacks need to stay organized. Whether notebooks, binders and textbooks are arranged by sequence of the day, subject or color isn’t important so long as the system works for you. To create more storage space in your locker, add durable, stackable locker shelving.

This is a new location. The Compassionate Friends is a support group which assists families toward the positive resolution of grief following the death of a child of any age. The group meets on the fourth Thursday of each month.

The Walnut United Methodist Church will host a lasagna supper from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 29.

The menu will be lasagna, salad, homemade bread, Sisler’s ice cream and

Perry Memorial Hospital is offering the EMT-Basic course beginning Tuesday, Oct. 27, and continue to mid-late February with the state exam to follow. DAVENPORT, Iowa — Drawings and watercolors are sometimes considered minor works of art, simply preparatory studies for more significant paintings and sculptures. Their fragile nature prevents them from being shown for extended periods, and their smaller size makes them less prominent in a museum or gallery. On the other hand, the immediacy and spontaneity of these media encourage artists to experiment, offering the viewer a glimpse into the mind and hand of the artist at work. The works in American Moderns on Paper, on view in the Figge’s third- and fourthfloor galleries until Sunday, Sept. 20, provide a front row seat to the development of American art during one of the most exciting periods in history. The exhibition features signature works by American masters such as Andrew Wyeth, Georgia O’Keeffe and Edward Hopper, as well as works by lesser-known, but influential artists such as Peggy Bacon and William Baziotes.

The Wadsworth Atheneum was founded in Hartford, Conn., in 1842

by Daniel Wadsworth, whose bequest of Hudson River School paintings gave the museum an early focus on American art. Wadsworth’s collection included pastel portraits of George and Martha Washington and several rare early American watercolors. Subsequent acquisitions of works on paper by Winslow Homer and Mary Cassatt laid the foundation for the museum’s collection of works on paper. In the

20th century, the Wadsworth’s curators, directors and donors had close ties with pioneering artists and dealers in New York— including Alfred Stieglitz, Edith Halpert and the many artists who lived or vacationed in the environs of Hartford — and the collection grew to include works on paper by the key artists of the time. Recent acquisitions of works by O’Keeffe and Ellsworth Kelly round out the roster of artists represented.

American Moderns on Paper features 87 works by 44 artists, created between 1902 and 1962, and ranging in style from the urban realism of John Sloan to the pioneering abstractions of Arthur Dove. During this period, the United States and New York City in particular, became the world center of innovation in the visual arts. Many artists in the show emigrated from Europe, while others were Americans who made frequent trips to travel and study in Paris and other European capitals, absorbing the influences of Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and other modernists. The New York Armory Show of 1913, though ridiculed in the press, brought avant-garde works by European masters to the American public for the first time, and many American artists exhibited alongside them.

The power of the cards Princeton Public Library’s Ellie Barbeau gave a thorough history and explanation of Tarot cards during a presentation on Tuesday, Aug. 18. The library has a wide array of books available featuring these cards which date back to the 15th century and are closely linked to a standard deck of playing cards.

PRINCETON — Monday, Aug. 31, at 6:30 p.m., the Monday Night Movie will take place in Venice, Italy, and feature a team of expert thieves who pull a daring heist of $35 million in bars of gold.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is hosting

Rocket Readers! This club uses computer games, activities and story time to encourage elementary students to improve their reading skills. The club is open to elementary students in second through fifth grades. The club meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

WALNUT — The Walnut Public Library has an ongoing coupon exchange.

Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas.

LADD — The Ladd Public Library would like to thank all the children who participated in the summer reading program.

The library continues to hold pre-school story times at 10 a.m. Tuesdays.

Thursday, Sept. 10, from 10 a.m. to noon, the library will host a rules of the road refresher course. The course is designed to give drivers, especially senior citizens and persons with disabilities, the knowledge and confidence needed to renew or obtain a driver’s license. The course combines an explanation of the driving exam with a practice written exam. The course is free, however, registration is requested.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library summer reading program ended with a bang when approximately 45 children celebrated by participating in a carnival.

The theme for this year’s event was “Come one, Come all, to the Reading Carnival.”

Throughout the month of July, two age groups met every Tuesday and Wednesday to share books, make crafts and participate in theme-related activities. The older children, ages 8-11, enjoyed guest speakers, Buttons the Clown, who told about his career as a clown, and storyteller Mick Henneberry, who shared his adventures growing up in a circus family.

The carnival, held on the last day, featured games built and designed by the older participants. Some of the games were ring toss, monster throw, the claw game, putt-putt golf and ping-pong toss. Added attractions were face painting, balloon art, an illusionist, snow cones, a juggling clown,and the

color wheel, which provided prizes for all.

The event culminated in a pie-in-theface contest with the younger children, ages

5-7, throwing whipped cream pies at the older kids. Fun was had by all and many are looking forward to next year’s program.

Sweeten celebrations with s’mores

I think probably everybody has a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Here are some recipes that all use that size of pan, and the best part of it is they are all fairly easy.

Beefy Pasta Casserole

Party Potatoes 1 32-ounce package southern style hash browns 2 10 3/4-ounce cans condensed cream of potato soup, undiluted 2 cups (16 ounces) sour cream 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded cheddar cheese 3/4 cup finely chopped red onion 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, cut into pieces Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 9-by-13inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Combine hash browns, soup, sour cream, cheddar cheese and onion in large bowl, mix well. Spoon into prepared baking dish, pat down. Dot with butter, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.

Cover with foil and bake 50 minutes.

Uncover and bake 20 minutes or until browned. Serves 10.

Family Style Frankfurters with Rice and Beans 1 tablespoon vegetables oil 1 onion, chopped 1/2 green bell pepper, chopped 2 cloves garlic, minced 1 can (about 15 ounces) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 can (about 15 ounces) great northern beans, rinsed and drained 8 ounces beef frankfurters, cut into 1/4inch inch pieces 1 cup uncooked instant brown rice 1 cup vegetable broth 1/4 cup packed brown sugar 1/4 cup ketchup 3 tablespoon dark molasses 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 9-by-13inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium high heat. Add onion, bell pepper and garlic, cook and stir 3 minutes or until tender. Hearty Noodle Casserole 1 pound Italian sausage, casings removed 1 26-ounce jar pasta sauce 2 cups (16 ounces) ricotta or cottage cheese 1 12-ounce package extra wide egg noodles, cooked and drained 2 cups (8 ounces) shredded mozzarella cheese, divided 1 4-ounce can sliced mushrooms, drained 1/2 cup chopped green bell pepper Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 9-by-13inch baking dish with non-stick cooking spray. Cook sausage in large skillet over medium high heat for 6 to 8 minutes or until browned, stirring to break up meat. Drain fat. Combine sausage, pasta sauce, ricotta cheese, noodles, 1 cup mozzarella cheese, mushrooms and bell pepper in large bowl. Spoon into baking dish and top with remaining mozzarella cheese. Bake 25 minutes or until heated through. Serves 6 to 8.

• Place butter in small microwave-safe bowl.

Heat in microwave for 30 seconds. Add sugar and cinnamon; stir until butter is melted and mixture is blended. Drizzle over graham cracker pieces.

• Bake in oven for 10 minutes; gently stir or turn over pieces. Bake for additional 10 minutes; remove from oven. Cool completely on cookie sheet.

• Remove wrappers from chocolate; break into sections. Toss graham cracker pieces with chocolate bar pieces, cinnamon graham cereal, marshmallows and peanuts. Store in cool, dry place.

IVCH 5K PERU — Online registration is underway for the 2015 Illinois Valley Community Hospital Healthy Choices, Healthy You Fall Fitness 5K race, which will get underway at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at Washington Park in Peru.
