It’s fair time The Bureau County Fair began Wednesday, Aug. 24, and will conclude Sunday, Aug. 28.

A long-standing tradition, the Bureau County Fair has something for everyone, and it is a great place for the whole family to enjoy quality time together.

Fans of country music may want to check out singer Dustin Lynch’s performance at 8 p.m. Thursday in the grandstand.

Other big events at the fair include the tractor pulls on Friday, the demolition derby on Saturday and the mud drags on Sunday.

Attendees can get their fill of fair food as they wander around and see what else the fair has to offer.

With armband nights for unlimited rides, a number of musical acts, horse shows and chainsaw artists, the fair promises to be a memorable event once again.

Reaching the summit Area Scouts climb Pikes Peak

PRINCETON — Princeton Boy Scouts from Troop 1063 recently returned from a trip of a lifetime.

After spending nearly a year fundraising and planning for the trip, five scouts, one leader and a parent chaperone took the train to Colorado, where they spent two days hiking Pikes Peak and whitewater rafting the Royal Gorge on the Arkansas River.

The crew spent their time in Colorado Springs, where on Day 1, they warmed up their hiking skills on a tour through Garden of the Gods, which is a public park full of red rock formations.

The following day, the scouts started out on a two-day trek on Barr Trail up Pikes Peak, which is the highest summit in the Rocky Mountains with an elevation of 14,115 feet.

leader, said the trail is known to be one of the Top 10 most dangerous trails in the U.S. because of lightning.

“If you’re on the trail after noon, you are taking a chance with lightning,” he said, but added the crew felt they could beat the odds.

“We got up 13,000 feet, and it started to rain and lightning. One guy told us to watch the animals. If the animals lie down, then you lie down,” Harris said.

Luckily, no one saw any animals laying low to the ground, but as they continued on, the Scouts were met with sleet and snow.

After a full day of hiking, the group rested up for the night at Barr Camp, which is a stop for hikers halfway up the summit.

Day 2 brought a few more challenges. The air became thinner; the hike became more rigorous; and some of the Scouts got touches of altitude sickness.

One of the Scouts, Mark Yaklich said a lot of the guys play sports like football and are in good shape, but the hike really tested

their ability.

The group pushed on, and before they knew it, they had made it to the top.

Once there, the Scouts celebrated and cheered their accomplishments, took plenty of photos and relished in one of the greatest achievements of their lives.

The group took a cog train back to the bottom — a much quicker, easier option.

A neat fact the group remembered was when they started out their hike at the bottom of Pikes Peak it was 91 degrees. At the top, it was 34 degrees, according to Ronald “Ronnie” Thompson, who was a chaperone on the trip.

“They say (the temperature) changes five degrees every 1,000 feet,” he said.

Harris said the challenge taught the Scouts to be prepared.

“If you’re not prepared, it’s a little tougher and hard to overcome the obstacles,” he said.

No one from the group had tried it out, so it would be a new experience for everyone.

“It wasn’t just about whitewater rafting. (The instructor) told us if you hear a whistle, everyone goes into safety mode. If someone fell out of the boat, we go there and save him,” he said. “We learned

a lot of teamwork and how to work together … It was amazing to see, especially with no one having done this before.”

When the Boy Scouts returned home, each Scout earned their hiking and 50-miler merit badges.

Carus has a team of emergency medical responders PERU/LASALLE — The Illinois Valley has a new team of licensed Emergency Medical Responders.

Carus Corporation’s First Responder Team is now officially licensed as Emergency Medical Responders in the state of Illinois.

After 60 hours of training, 23 Carus employees have been accepted into the Illinois Department of Public Health’s Emergency Medical Responder system.

The Carus team is now recognized as one of eight non-transport emergency response departments in the Illinois Valley, according to Nicholas Fish, EMS and disaster coordinator for Illinois Valley Community Hospital.

“Carus is unique, in that they’ve made the commitment to ensure they have a team onsite to start an emergency medical response before an ambulance arrives,” said Fish.

“This type of registration is

usually used for fire departments in small or remote areas. The only other two local, non-traditional entities with this registration are Illinois Valley Community College and Flint Hills.”

“At this moment, we have 53 people onsite, and 12 of them are trained, registered first responders, able to begin an emergency medical response if needbe,” said Carus’ Environmental, Health, Safety and Security Manager Gerald Greer, looking at the company’s LaSalle facility roll call system. “This means that if a co-worker suffers a sudden illness or injury, that person won’t lose precious moments waiting for paramedics to arrive. It also means that these employees have the skills to help save the life of a relative, friend or community member. They now qualify to participate in ride-alongs with local agencies and

to begin training for higher level certifications, like EMT or paramedic,” said Greer.

Two of Carus’ First Responders work at the company’s Peru headquarters. Customer Support Representative Jose Rios joined Carus’ First Responder Team after working for about a year as a volunteer firefighter in DePue. “Every employee Carus has provided this training for now has the skills to pursue volunteer opportunities in their community,” said Rios. “Someone who is already a licensed first responder is a great asset to a volunteer fire department because the department doesn’t have to pay for that person’s training. This goes beyond Carus. This is a great thing for the area.”

Carus’ First Responders meet every other month to continue developing their skills.

It was really late so my mom said we would go to bed once we got to the room. In my head, I was thinking that was perfect.

While she was sleeping, I could sneak out to explore that cave.

We were given our room card, and when we got there, I saw we had a very nice room. We were in bed by 10:45 p.m. I decided I would go to the cave at 11:30 p.m. That would give everyone enough time to fall asleep.

Zzzzzz. Oops, I had fallen asleep. I looked at the clock and saw it was midnight.

Suddenly, I saw the door to our room open. I saw the clerk from the stairs was there, carrying a body bag.

He ran at me, covered my mouth with strong tape and shoved me in the bag.

I tried to fight back and make noise, but he was very strong and the tape blocked my screams. My family was so tired from our long day of traveling, I don’t think an earthquake could have woken them up.

Starting immediately, patrons who owe less than $10 in fines and have not used their library card in person at the front desk in the last three years will have their library card purged from the system and will no longer be able to use it. If you only download eBooks and audiobooks online and do not check out books at the library, your card will also be in danger of being cancelled after three years, since the purge process is now being done automatically, and the online borrowing apps do not communicate usage to the library’s Sierra database system. This process will take place once a year, in the spring.

If you want to receive an email notice in advance of your card’s expiration date, come in to the library or log into your account online to make sure we have your current email on file. We email monthly reminders to people

whose cards are due to expire. You can also make sure your card will not be expunged from the system by using it at the front desk to check out items.

If your card does get automatically removed from the system, you can reinstate your eligibility by bringing in a photo ID and asking for a new card which will be issued at no charge. If you have any questions about this new procedure, or are concerned about whether your card is in danger of being deactivated, come see us at the library.

WYANET — Thursday, Sept. 8, 6:30 p.m., the library’s 2nd Thursday@the Library program will start the season out with one of the library’s favorite presenters, Leslie Goddard. This time she will bring Eleanor Roosevelt to life. In Goddard’s own description, Roosevelt grew from being a shy, homely orphan into a confident, driven champion of human rights. In this program, Roosevelt grapples with the question or whether or not to accept an invitation to join the American delegation to the new United Nations. As she considers her options, she shares stories of her childhood, her marriage to Franklin D. Roosevelt, her work during World War I, Franklin’s bout with polio, coming to the White House in 1933, World War II and Franklin’s death. As she speaks, she reveals the warm, honest and passionate First Lady and stateswoman she was.

Goddard’s reasoning for her portrayal is, “It’s my life’s work to bring memorable women from the past alive and to tell historical stories so that lessons from the past are more meaningful and powerful.” This is the fourth year Goddard has come to Wyanet. Refreshments will be served following the program.

The 2nd Thursday@the Library season will last September through November, break for December through February, and resume in March and go through May. Tuesday, Sept. 13, 1 p.m., the library will host a computer class.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students.

The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 2016-17 fiscal year. The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. PERU — To celebrate the city’s 1985 sesquicentennial, renowned artist John Mosiman was commissioned to create prints of Peru Landmarks including the Samuel N. Maze homestead, the Civil War Memorial in Rotary Park, Downtown Peru, Bartons Castle (Stopa Home) and Old Water Street. A set of these prints were given to the Rev. H. Raymond Voss, pastor of the Zion United Church of Christ, upon his retirement in 1985.

After many years away, the Voss family felt it was time the prints be returned to Peru and donated them to the library for the enjoyment of visitors.

Parade entries are encouraged to use this year’s festival theme which is “Glory Days.” There is no entry fee to enter a unit in the parade. The deadline for parade entries is Aug. 26.

The parade will step off at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 10 on Main Street. Several popular entries will be back again this year, including the South Shore Drill Team, Jessie White Tumblers, the Generics, Black Hawk Pipe and Drums, and the Metropolitan Youth Program Team.

River Bandits tryouts LADD — The Illinois Valley River Bandits will have 12u tryouts at 11 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 28 at Kennedy Park in Ladd. Players can’t turn 13 before May to be eligible. Practices will begin in January. The cost is $300 and includes uniforms, tournament entry fees and equipment.

Annawan Canal Ambush

ANNAWAN — The Annawan Canal Ambush Mini-Tri and 5K will take place on Saturday, Sept. 10.

The Mini-Triathlon at 10 a.m. consists of a 1.5 mile run, 6.7 mile bike and 1.8 mile paddle.

The 5K is an out and back along the Hennepin Canal, starting at 10:30 a.m. Runners will watch the Mini-Tri athletes paddle their way to the finish line.

Although large digital clocks will be present at the finish of both races, no official timing service is recorded. Only first-place finishers will be recorded and awarded prizes. Children will complete a quarter mile paddle and fun run. Parents are welcome to assist any child unfamiliar with a kayak, but volunteers are there to assist also.

A T-shirt, lunch, drink and live entertainment are included in the registration fee for all participants. The finish-line party will consist of live entertainment provided by Tyler Duckworth.

Race registration is open through Aug. 29. Fees for the mini-tri (10 a.m.) are single $35, team $60, and for the 5K and Kids Fun Run and Paddle (12:15 p.m.) are $25. Sign-ups may be done online at https://secure. getmeregistered.com/get_information.php.

Striking Out Cancer Friday Night Lights

ROCK FALLS — This year’s “Striking Out Cancer” coed tourney is Oct. 1 at Centennial Park in Rock Falls.

The tournament is held in memory of the late Anita Elgin, former president of Tampico Youth Softball. Everyone is asked to wear as much pink as possible.

Entry fee is $100 per team and each team must field a minimum of two girls. Deadline for entry is Sept. 25.

A portion ($500) of the proceeds will go to “Home of Hope” in Sterling. The remainder will go to the “Miss Anita Project,” which the Elgin children will be donating books to classrooms and cancer care bags to the hospital chemo department in honor of their mom.
