It’s fair time!

The 162nd annual Bureau County Fair kicks off this week with a host of fun-filled activities for folks of all ages.

The gates open at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 23, and event-goers will find plenty to do throughout the week until the fair closes on Sunday, Aug. 27.

Many will enjoy the grandstand shows set for every night throughout the fair. This year’s country show features the Oak Ridge Boys, set for Thursday, Aug. 24.

Youngsters of all ages will enjoy the midway, where a variety of rides, games and plenty of fair food will abound. There are armband days set, where one can have unlimited rides for a certain prices.

Plenty of free shows are available throughout the week, and the hospitality tent will always have something going on for fair-goers of all ages.

You’ll also want to visit the livestock barns, exhibit halls and the Allen buildings to check out the many entries as well as displays from area businesses/services.

On the Record With the Bureau County Fair’s country act — the Oak Ridge Boys

“It’s difficult to find the right words to describe just how special that was,” Sterban said. “When you look at the people that are

in the Hall of Fame, people like Elvis, Johnny Cash, George Jones, Merle Haggard, Dolly Parton — for the Oak Ridge Boys to be a part of that — it’s so special. It’s beyond words.”

The Oak Ridge Boys look forward to adding Bureau County Fair to the list of venues they’ve played throughout their career.

Sterban said they’ve played just about every fair throughout the country.

PRINCETON — Every time The Oak Ridge Boys step before an audience, they bring over four decades of charted singles and 50 years of tradition to a stage show widely acknowledged as among the most exciting anywhere.

The country artists have one of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry.

Their string of hits include the pop chart-topper “Elvira,”as well as “Bobbie Sue,” “Dream On,” “Thank God for Kids,” “American Made,” “I Guess it Never Hurts to Hurt Sometimes,” “Fancy Free,” “Gonna Take A Lot of River” and many others.

As the band prepares for their show at the Bureau County Fair on Thursday, Aug. 24, its bass singer Richard Sterban took time for a phone interview with Bureau County Republican to talk about the band’s long and fascinating history and its secret to the group’s lasting power.

“First and foremost is the fact that we love doing what we do. And after all these years, we still look forward to getting on stage and taking our music live to our fans and audiences,” he said.

All four current band members have been singing together since 1973, and Sterban said there is special relationship that exists between them all.

“Each guy is different and brings something different to the table. I think that’s part of our appeal … Over the years, we’ve become the best of friends.

In fact, I think now that we’re older, we get along better. I think we’re too old to let little things bother us,” he laughed.

Sterban said the band has no plans to retire soon.

“We’re all enjoying good health. And I think as long as the good Lord above allows us to keep expe-

How did the Oak Ridge Boys get started?

The history behind the band dates back to World War II. Back then, there was a group called the Georgia Clodhoppers that would go to Oak Ridge, Tenn., to entertain the people working on the Manhattan project.

As a result of them going there on a regular basis, they eventually became known as the Oak Ridge Quartet.

The group stayed together until the middle of the 1950s, when it disbanded.

A decade later, it reorganized and adopted the name Oak Ridge Boys to avoid confusion between the Oak Ridge Quartet. William Lee Golden was the first to join in 1965. Duane Allen joined in 1966. Richard Sterban joined in 1972. Joe Bonsall joined in 1973.

All four of these members are still together today and playing for audiences of all generations.

From ‘Elvis’ to ‘Elvira’ The 40th anniversary of Elvis’ death was Aug. 16. And in the early 1970s Oak Ridge Boys bass singer Richard Sterban sang back up for Elvis before being asked to join the Oak Ridge Boys.

While it turned out to be a great move for Sterban, he said he still treasurers the time he spent with Elvis. He’s written the autobiography, “From Elvis to Elvira” telling of his time with the King of Rock N’ Roll.

“When I look back, I’m so glad I had the chance to experience that. It was a real honor and a privilege. And actually pretty exciting,” he said.

After a year and a half of singing with Elvis, Sterban received a call from William Lee Golden who said the Oak Ridge Boys’ bass singer was leaving the group and wondered if he would be interested in taking his place.

“I was a big fan of the Oak Ridge Boys, and they had a great deal of potential, and I really wanted to be a part of the group. So I look the job and while a lot of people questioned me about my decision, I believed in the Oak Ridge Boys,” he said. “And history and time have proven I made a very good decision.”

Bureau County audiences can expect to hear all The Oak Ridge Boys hits. They plan to play a mix of gospel, country and patriotic music to honor the troops and veterans.

“We’re going to do ‘Elvira,’ of course. That is our signature song. It’s still the largest selling record to ever be recorded in Nashville,” Sterban said. “There’s going to be something for every member of the family. We encourage parents to bring the kids and also hope Grandmas and Grandpas come out to see us.”

Starved Rock Country among safest places to live in Illinois LendEDU, an online marketplace for student loans, recently released a report showing eight of the cities having more than 5,000 population in the Starved Rock region — six of them made the list of the 100 safest cities in Illinois — meaning these cities’ crime statistics and other measures of community safety are the most favorable in Illinois, compared to national crime statistics.

The six Starved Rock Country communities scoring in the Top 100 safest cities in Illinois are: Marseilles, Mendota, Princeton, Streator, Ottawa and Peru. This finding only confirms what many in the Starved Rock Country region already know — that while area cities are not far from larger cities, they are safer and more secure than their larger cousins (another reason to live, work, retire and play in the Starved Rock region).

The LendEDU report sought to recognize the safest

towns and cities in each state in the country. Using licensed data, they gathered the total crime risk score for every town over 5,000 population in every state.

Each city’s score represents the combined risk of rape, murder, assault, robbery, burglary, larceny and vehicle theft compared to the national average of 100.

LendEDU partnered with Onboard Informatics to complete and distribute their study. Onboard Informatics’ dataset used the most recent population figures, location purposes, and other online data to assemble total crime risk scores. LendEDU is a marketplace for student loans and student loan refinance, created to help student loan borrowers find transparency without damaging their credit, and now a purveyor of data to help students decide where to live and go to school.

Registrations for the 2017 4-H Family Camp are being accepted

Registrations are now being accepted for the Sept.

22-24 camp which will be held at the 4-H Memorial Camp at 499 Old Timber Road in Monticello.

Activities will include rock climbing, a 300-foot zip line, archery, fishing, hayrack rides, outdoor cooking, model rockets, storytelling, campfires, crafts, cardboard boat racing and more.

“Your family will sleep in a cabin and have their meals provided. They’ll start with dinner on Friday and will end with lunch on Sunday. They’ll also enjoy a lot of fun activities and many of the same staff who run our summer camp programs volunteer to make this an enjoyable experience. Expect to have fun, eat heartily, and make memories which will last a lifetime,” Breanne Suarez, University of Illinois Extension educator and 4-H Youth Development coordinator said.

At least one youth attending must be 8 to 16 years old, and children must be accompanied by at least one parent or guardian.

The fee for children 8 years and older is $75 per person,

and children between 4-7 years old are $35 per person. Those under 4 are free.

Campers can arrive anytime from 5 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 22, and the camp runs through 3 p.m. on Sept.

24. Late arrivals will be accepted from 8 to 10 a.m. on Sept. 23.

Each family will have their own cabin, and each cabin has 10 beds. If you have another family or group of friends you’re willing to share a cabin with, please let organizers know beforehand as it will make room for others.

PRINCETON — Thursday, Aug. 24, 6:30 p.m., John Purvis returns to the library to revisit the lost treasurers of Illinois.

Every town and village in Illinois has a story to tell. There are numerous memorials, statues and abandoned buildings, each with their own tale.

Many of these were erected with great fanfare and pomp. Crowds gathered, important officials made speeches, bands played and people cheered at the unveiling. During Thursday’s program, participants will rediscover these places: the Fruit Hill Country School Museum, the abandoned Gilson High School, the replica of the Statue of Liberty, the Recent Harvest Festival in Franklin Grove and the Chaplin Creek Historic Village.

The program is free to all.

Monday, Aug. 28, 6:30 p.m., Monday Movie: A famous French inspector travels to Rome to catch a notorious jewel thief known as “the phantom” before he conducts his most daring heist yet.

Thursday, Aug. 31, 6:30 p.m., “Radium Girls of Ottawa” presentation and reading with author Heinz Suppan.

New DVDs have been added to the library collection, including “The Zookeeper’s Wife,” “The Lost City of Z,” “Call the Midwife: Season 6,” “The Fate of the Furious,” and “Descendants.”

Thursday, Sept. 14, 6 p.m., the Melikin Puppets will return to the library to present “Dragon Feathers!” Merlin, the world’s foremost authority on Dragons, leads the cast through three classic dragon tales and invites selected members of the audience to participate in an authentic Chinese Dragon Dance. This program is free and for all ages.

Tuesday, Sept. 19, 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., the children’s library will host a pirate party in honor of International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Pirate stories will be read along with crafts, games and snacks during the hour.

Starting September, the adult library will have an activity tables for individuals to participate in while at the library.

There will be jigsaw puzzles, coloring pages and other puzzles. Supplies will be provided by the library.

The Children’s Summer Reading Program at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library had its award party on Thursday, Aug. 10, with pizza, ice cream and drinks. Every week for six weeks, the children who participated were given prizes and coupons for ice cream/ French fries at local businesses. Crafts were done according to the theme, Reading by Design.

Annual Wednesday-Sunday • august 23-27, 2017 162nd annual Bureau County Fair set for Aug. 23-27 PRINCETON — The gates open at noon on Wednesday for the 162nd annual Bureau County Fair. You will see traditional exhibits like tractor pulls, hog shows and great fair food, and make memories with your family that will last forever.

Plan to come several days because the entertainment changes every day.

The kids have been waiting all summer for the North American Midway to open. There are wristband ride specials every day of the fair.

Wednesday you can ride from 5 to 10 p.m. At 9 p.m. walk over to the office and pick out a number for the cake walk. For only 25 cents you may get lucky and win a prize-winning cake.

Thursday Thursday is Concert Day at the fair. The popular entertainment group The Oak Ridge Boys will perform on the grandstand stage. They have had 17 No. 1 hits and have sold more than 41 million records. Opening for them is the Martin Family Circus at 7:30 p.m.

The Martin Family has four kids from 9 to 18 and two parents who play a variety of instruments and sing in harmony on a variety of popular and traditional country music.

Thursday has always been Senior Citizen Day at the fair. Seniors are admitted for $2. A special day of bingo games and refreshments begins at noon in the hospitality building.

Free musical entertainment begins at 3 p.m. and continues through 10 p.m.

During the day you can watch the dairy cattle show or the rabbit show.

The goat show starts at 7 p.m. The rest of the week’s livestock shows are on Saturday and Sunday.

Friday The longest wristband ride special is on Friday night with unlimited rides from 5 to 11 p.m. for $24.

Listen for the roar and watch the smoke billow on the track as the Illini State Pullers truck and tractor pull begins at 6 p.m. The farm stock tractors pull at 5:30 p.m. but soon the track is taken over by the souped

As with every day of the fair, there are plenty of free shows scheduled throughout the evening.

Learn about Bengal tigers and African lions, test your farming knowledge or get spooked by a scary clown — all included in your admission price. Wait until you get to the fairgrounds to eat dinner. There are great food stands all over, including corn dogs, onion rings, tacos, cotton candy, elephant ears and Kramer’s BBQ ribs. You won’t leave hungry.

Saturday If you can only come to the fair one day, Saturday would be a great choice. It is crammed full of entertainment from 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. Take a good long sniff as you walk past the open air barn at the east gate.

The BBQ rib cook-off chefs started their roasters bright and early. The winners will be announced around 3 p.m. and you might be lucky enough to snag a sample.

The horse speed show begins at 9 a.m. Watch the riders as they fly around the cloverleaf pattern around the barrels and race their horses to the finish line. Their agility is amazing. Several livestock shows are going on across the fairgrounds too. Sheep are shown on Saturday and hogs take over the show ring on Sunday. The beef and steer shows are both days.

are two age divisions — 0-14 and 15-21 years. Talent can be anything from dancing to singing to juggling or doing impressions. The winners from each of the two divisions will represent Bureau County in the Illinois State Fair talent show in Springfield in January.

Registrations are still being accepted. The musical entertainment continues until 10 p.m. in the hospitality building. There is plenty of seating there. Grab a lemonade shake up and a corn dog and sit and enjoy the free entertainment.

There are two wristband ride specials on Saturday.

The first one is from 1 to 5 p.m. and the second is from 5 to 11 p.m. Wristbands are $24 for each session and provide unlimited rides.

There are several other free shows on the grounds several times daily. Watch the Bear Hollow chain saw carvers make tree trunks turn into cute bears or giant ears of corn. Family Feud is a kid’s entertainment show which tests the competitors on their farming knowledge. Close Encounters of the Exotic Kind is an educational show that features Bengal tigers and African lions. Nightmare on Fairgrounds Road haunted attraction will have a sneak peek into the dark recesses of the haunted barns. Pick up a fair brochure when you get to the grounds to check out the show times.

The slam bang excitement of the demolition derby begins at 5 p.m. Saturday. Be sure to get to the grandstand early to see the kids competing in the power wheels demo derby.

Watch those tiny drivers crash their Barbie cars into each other. This year there is a beginner driver class in the demo with drivers from 15 to 21 years old. First place

Oak Ridge Boys to headline at the fair One of the most distinctive and recognizable sounds in the music industry is coming to the 162nd Bureau County Fair in Princeton on Thursday, Aug. 24. It’s the four-part harmonies of the Oak Ridge Boys.

The Oaks have spawned 17 No. 1 songs, sold over 41 million records, sport five Grammies, 11 Dove awards and four CMA awards. They were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

The lineup is the same since 1973 — William Lee Golden, lead singer Duane Allen, Richard Sterban and Joe Bonsall deliver more than 50 years of tradition in every show.

The Oak’s roots date back to Knoxville, Tenn., and were one of the top

drawing gospel groups in the nation according to Time Magazine. In the early ‘70s, another Bureau County Fair alumni performer, Johnny Cash, booked them on his show in Vegas. He told them, “There’s magic in the four of you.” He believed in them. Then in 1975, Roy Clark’s manager Jim Halsey asked them to open for Roy.

The outcome of that was Jim becoming their manager, and 1977’s “Y’all Come Back Saloon,” their first country album and “I’ll be true to you,” the Oak’s first No. 1 song. Thirty-one studio albums later, the Oaks continue to be one of country music’s truly legendary acts. They still perform some 150 dates each year throughout the U.S. and

Canada.

Sunday Sunday of the fair begins with a joyful worship service in the grandstand as many community churches gather for a combined church service at 10 a.m.

Churchgoers can get reduced admission prices after the service. Swing by the hospitality building for a free slice of watermelon all afternoon. While you are there enjoy the free musical entertainment that continues until 4:30 p.m. Be sure to stop by the McCutchan Arena for the open horse show and the draft horse show. The sixhorse hitch class will be the first class on the schedule following the lunch break

at approximately 1 p.m.

The last blast wristband ride special is from 1 to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Ride all you want for $24.

If you have admired the chain saw carvings, your chance to own one will come at 2:30 p.m. when the Bear Hollow wood carvers artwork will be auctioned off as a fundraiser for the fair. Also on the sale block will be some great homemade pies which will be auctioned as a fundraiser for the Bureau County Fair queens trip to Springfield.

If Garth Brooks is one of your favorite musicians, be in the grandstand at 3 p.m. to see the Brian Shartzer Garth Brooks Tribute Show. He will sing all of your Garth favorites.

Admission is free.

The fine arts department exhibits will be released at 5 p.m. so don’t wait too long to walk through the building because it clears out in a hurry. The exhibitors will take a last look around the building, already planning for what they are going to enter next year.

Horsing around PRINCETON — Horse events have always been a large part of the Bureau County Fair, since its inception in 1855. In those days, the racetrack infield was lined with horses and buggies. The harness races were a huge part of the fair with downtown businesses closing on Thursday afternoon, so everyone could attend the races. By 1909, 34 of the newfangled automobiles had begun to make an appearance at the fairgrounds. Traditions changed and by 1921, automobile racing soon became the drawing card.

Horse events are a still a big part of the 162nd fair. On Wednesday night, the draft horse pull will be the grandstand entertainment at 6 p.m. Come out and watch the huge Belgian draft horses pull the sled down the track.

On Saturday, the

horse speed show starts at 9 a.m. in McCutchan Arena. Barrel racing and pole bending classes for all ages of riders will be held. There is bleacher seating, or you can bring your lawn chair.

On Sunday morning, the open horse show starts at 9 a.m. It includes halter classes and riding classes for kids and adults. At 10 a.m. Sunday, the halter classes for the draft horse show begin.

Following the lunch break at approximately 1 p.m., be sure to get over to McCutchan Arena to see the exciting six-horse hitch class.

You can feel the ground shake as the huge horses trot past you pulling the wooden wagons. Following that class will be the four-horse hitch class, teams to wagons and single horse to cart classes along with a ride a draft class.

PRINCETON — The 10th annual CommUnity worship will again be a part of the 162nd annual Bureau County Fair. The service will be at 10 a.m. Sunday, Aug. 27, with Andy Schmeck as the featured speaker.

Schmeck grew up in Princeton and graduated from Princeton High School in 2007. He graduated with his Master of Divinity from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School in 2016. He has been the pastor of student ministries for the last five years in Libertyville, Ill. He currently resides in Mundelein with his wife, Brookelynn, a daughter, Oriella, and a baby on the way.

Admission to the grandstand for this service is free, with shuttle service from the west parking area to the grandstand. Attendees should enter using the west gate off South Fairground Avenue.
