It’s fair time! The 160th Bureau County Fair rolls into town Wednesday, Aug. 26, and runs through Sunday, Aug. 30. Located at the Bureau County Fairgrounds on West Peru Street in Princeton, the five-day event promises all kinds of fun for youngsters as well as those young at heart. A variety of free shows and entertainment will greet fair-goers, along with all the fair food you’ve come to know and love throughout the years. Along with a midway filled with fantastic rides and games, you won’t want to miss all the exhibits your friends and neighbors have entered — all hoping to take home a blue ribbon for their efforts. From photography to arts and crafts projects, from baked goods to garden goodness and flowers, from roosters making themselves heard from the poultry barn to hogs, sheep, goats and more, there won’t be a shortage of things to see. And you won’t want to miss the grandstand entertainment either. On Wednesday evening, the draft horse pulling contest is sure to please. The well-known 38 Special is set to perform on Thursday evening, and on Friday, the headliners of the show include country favorites JoDee Messina and Lonestar. Tractor pulls are set for Saturday evening. On Sunday, plan to attend the countywide worship service in the morning and popular Demolition Derby in the evening. Awaiting the 160th Bureau County Fair
Chain saw carvers will return to fair PRINCETON — Tim and Karen Barker, chain saw artists, are carving their way back to the 160th Bureau County Fair in Princeton. Timber Falls Tree Service presents this husband and wife carving team who are returning after being off the road for several years as part of the free entertainment at the fair. The carvers start with a log. Tim and Karen will complete a variety of figures, from woodland creatures like bears, farm animals, totem poles and benches in as little as an hour, to three hours time. They will carve together and separately each day during the fair. The sculp-
tures range from 2 to 9 feet tall. Audiences attending these shows will see work begin, forms beginning to emerge from the wood. Fair-goers can return as often as they like to monitor the progress on the carvings, and watch as new creations pile up. Finally, all the craftsmanship will be auctioned on Sunday, Aug. 30, the last day of the fair, behind the secretary’s office. The auction helps defray the cost of the fair. Demolition derby will be Aug. 30 PRINCETON — The most unique attraction at the 160th Bureau County Fair in Princeton is the demolition derby, set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, and presented by and sponsored by Spring Valley City Bank, Dakota Street Insurance, Heartland Auto Body and Central Bank. Demolition derbies always attract more people than any other event at the county fair because its fun for both drivers and spectators. “This is an opportunity to break every traffic law there is and maybe get paid for it.” The object is simple: Two rows of cars line
up, rear bumper to rear bumper. When the flag drops, they race toward each other and meet in a huge traffic accident. Drivers try to knock out all the other cars before they can knock him or her out. The spectators watching get as much of a kick out of the carnage as the drivers, picking their favorites and cheering them on. The derby is produced by the fair and complete rules are available on the fair’s website at www. bureaucountyfair.com or by calling Jason Floyd at 815-590-8873. First place is guaranteed unless stated. All prize money is guaranteed and
goes up with more paid entrants. Payouts are: Fair Class (80 or newer), $2,000 to win; Compacts, $700 to win; Wire Class with passenger, $2,000 to win; Beginner Wire Class with passenger, $700 to win, 16-18 year olds only, must have been 18 in 2014; Trucks, $700 to win (10 trucks or more). A new feature this year is the Power Wheels Demo for kids ages 3 to 9 which starts at 2:30 p.m., right before the main derby. Great seats for the derby

Apprehending an alligator PRINCETON — Through the years, the one act that most captivates the imagination of audiences at the fair is watching an American Bushman bare-handedly apprehend a 9-foot, 300-pound alligator … and that’s exactly what you’ll see at the 160th Bureau County Fair in Princeton. Kachunga and the Alligator is an educational
fun part of the fair’s free entertainment and is presented by Heartland Bank, AgView FS, Mid American McDonalds and Variety Attractions. Check the fair’s website, www.bureaucountfair.com, for performance times scheduled Wednesday through Sunday during this year’s fair, Aug. 26-30.
PRINCETON — The 160th Bureau County Fair will offer lots of free entertainment and attractions to keep fair goers busy this year. The fair board presents live bands, entertainers and various shows in the hospitality tent and on various stages around the fairgrounds. Brochures may be picked up when you arrive at the fair or you can check the fair’s website for the schedule for the various shows and find them on the map. Hospitality tent acts, presented by Midland States Bank this year, include Rick Moreland (gospel singer), Generics Goodies Band (swing, country, rock), bingo and refreshments hosted by Princeton Moose Lodge, Jack Ness (oneman band), Hit & Miss (duo variety); Steve Hargis (Country), Generics Rocking Robin Band (50s 60s rock n roll), Henry Torpedo Boys (bluegrass), Mary Peifer and the Trouble Makers (Variety), Anita Reno (vocalist), Bureau County Barbershop Har-
mony Chorus and the Marshall-Putnam-Stark Youth Variety Show Choir. The hospitality tent is produced by Gary Swanson GES Sound. Monday, Aug. 24, at 6:30 p.m., Monday Night Movie will take viewers into a modern-day nursing home, where an elderly man begins to read a love story from his notebook to a female fellow patient. Tuesday, Aug. 25, at 6:30 p.m., Wellness Journey Class with LaDonna Mazzorana. She will discuss Sarah Gottfried, MD’s Hormone Reset Diet book. Wednesday, Aug. 26, at 5:30 p.m., Wellness Support Group led by LaDonna Mazzorana. The Princeton Public Library is also looking for published authors interested in participating in an author fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 24. This is a free event, but authors must reserve their spot by filling out an application. It’s a hope that this will become an annual event. Peru St. Applications will be processed on a first come, first served basis, with a Wednesday, Sept. 30, deadline. DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is hosting Rocket Readers! This club uses computer games, activities and story time to encourage elementary students to
improve their reading skills. The club is open to elementary students in second through fifth grades. The club meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m. SHEFFIELD —The Sheffield Public Library’s summer reading program ended with a bang when about 45 children celebrated with a carnival. Through the month of July, children shared books, made crafts and participated in theme-related activities. Head Librarian Sue Lanxon said fun was held by all and many are looking forward to next year’s program. WALNUT — The library also has an ongoing coupon exchange. Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas. LADD — The Ladd Public Library continues to hold story times on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and the Junior Book Club at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Currently, the club is reading “Holes.” BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. Pork Chops and Apples
How about some more easy meals to prepare when you come home tired and without much time to feed the family ... especially when everybody is hungry. The recipes require just a few ingredients, so they are quick.
Simple Spaghetti Bake 8 ounces spaghetti 1 pound lean ground beef 1 onion, chopped 1 green pepper, finely chopped 1 10-ounce can tomato bisque soup 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 1 8-ounce can whole kernel corn, drained 1 4-ounce can sliced black olives, drained 1 12-ounce package shredded cheddar cheese Cook spaghetti according to package directions; drain and set aside. Cook beef, bell pepper and onion in skillet and drain. Add remaining ingredients, 1/3 cup water and 1/2 teaspoon salt, and spaghetti to baking pan and cover. Refrigerate for 2 to 3 hours. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350°. Cover and bake for 45 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.
Lemonade Spare Ribs 4 pounds pork spare ribs 1 6-ounce can frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt 1/2 cup soy sauce Preheat oven to 350°. Place ribs, meaty side down, in shallow roasting pan. Cover and bake for 40 minutes. Drain fat and
bake for an additional 30 minutes. Drain fat again. Combine lemonade concentrate, garlic salt and soy sauce in bowl and brush on ribs. Reduce oven to 325°, cover and bake for an additional 1 hour or until ribs are tender. Brush occasionally with sauce. Serves 4 to 6.
Sausage Casserole 1 pound pork sausage 2 15-ounce cans pork and beans 1 15-ounce can Mexican stewed tomatoes 1 8-ounce package cornbread muffin mix Preheat oven to 400°. Brown sausage in skillet and drain fat. Add beans and tomatoes, blend and bring to a boil. Pour mixture into sprayed 3-quart baking dish. Prepare muffin mix according to package directions and drop teaspoonfuls of mixture over meat-bean mixture. Bake for 30 minutes or until top browns. Serves 6.
6 thick-cut pork chops Flour Canola oil 3 baking apples Preheat oven to 325°. Dip pork chops in flour and coat well. Brown chops in oil in skillet and place in sprayed 9-by-13inch baking dish. Add 1/3 cup water to casserole. Cover and bake for 50 minutes. Peel, halve and seed apples and place half apple over each pork chop. Return to oven for 10 minutes. Don’t overcook apples. Serves 6.
Tuna and Chips 1 6-ounce can tuna, drained 1 10-ounce can cream of chicken soup 3/4 cup milk 1 1/2 cups crushed potato chips, divided Preheat oven to 350°. Break chunks of tuna into bowl and stir in soup and milk. Add 1/4 cup crushed potato chips and mix well. Pour mixture into a sprayed baking dish and sprinkle remaining chips over top. Bake, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until chips are light brown. Serves 4. Good served with a tossed salad.

Chicken Bake 8 boneless skinless chicken breast halves 8 slices Swiss cheese 1 10-ounce can cream of chicken soup 1 8-ounce box chicken stuffing mix Preheat oven to 325°. Flatten chicken breasts with rolling pin and place in sprayed 9-by-13-inch baking dish. Place cheese slices over chicken. Combine chicken soup and 1/2 cup water in bowl and pour over chicken. Prepare stuffing mix, according to package directions, and sprinkle over chicken. Bake, uncovered, for 1 hour. Serves 8. Potato-Beef Bake 1 pound ground beef 1 10-ounce can sloppy Joe sauce 1 10-ounce can fiesta nacho cheese soup 1 32-ounce package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed Preheat oven to 400°. Cook beef in skillet over medium heat until no longer pink and drain. Add sloppy Joe sauce and cheese soup to beef and mix well. Place hash brown in sprayed 9-by-13-inch baking dish and top with beef mixture. Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.

Meet the Storm MANLIUS — Bureau Valley High School will host the 2015 Meet the Storm Night for all fall sports on Friday, Aug. 21, at the BV Athletic Field. Beginning at 6 p.m., all parents are strongly encouraged to meet briefly for break-out meetings by activity in these locations: Football - Football field bleachers. Cheerleaders - Room 413. Cross country - Media Center. Volleyball - Gym. Golf - Driver’s Ed. Room 444. Drill Team - Room 312. Marching Band - Music/Band Room. After these meetings, all fall participants will be introduced on the football field. Then the football and volleyball teams will hold a short practice/scrimmage. In case of inclement weather, all introductions will take place inside the gym.

PRINCETON — The annual Blue-White Scrimmage at Princeton High School will be Friday, Aug. 21, at Bryant Field. The event begins at 6 p.m. with the National Anthem by the Star Spangled Singers. Introduction of all fall activities will begin at 6:15 p.m., including marching band, cheerleaders, pom, Star Spangled Singers, boys and girls golf, boys and girls cross country, girls tennis, boys soccer, girls volleyball and football. The F/S football scrimmage will start at 6:35 p.m. There will be performances starting at 6:45 p.m. by the poms, cheer and band with the varsity football scrimmage scheduled for 6:55 p.m. Boys Soccer will hold a Blue-White Night at 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 20, at Bryant Field. There will be a Meet the Tigresses Night for Volleyball at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, in Prouty Gymnasium.
