The first school bell of the school year It’s that time of year when backpacks, early morning school bells and a plethora of activities — both educational and extracurricular — are taking the place of flip flops, lazy afternoons at the pool and extended bed times. That’s right. School is ready to begin in Bureau County.

For the past several weeks, teachers like Bright Beginnings prekindergarten teacher Erica Lenihan (pictured at right), who teaches at Douglas Grade School in Princeton, have been getting their classrooms ready for their students. Bulletin boards, desks with names printed on brightly-colored name tags, library books, textbooks, lockers — teachers are going over every detail as they prepare for their young charges.

As the school year gets underway, we at the Illinois Valley Scene wish each and every student, each and every teacher, a great school year filled with many memory-making moments, mixed with a good share of teachable moments coupled with the excitement of learning. May your school year be a successful one.

As for parents, we urge you to become as involved as possible with your child(ren)’s education. Talk with the teachers who are charged with educating your child and see what kind of help you can deliver. We’re sure our county’s educators will be more than happy to have you participate in their classrooms.

It’s the start of a new school year. May it be a great experience for all.

PRINCETON — A new event will close out the Bureau County Fair on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 28.

Come out to the grandstand at 1 p.m. and watch the Overlanders 4x4 Mud Drags. Mud lovers will enjoy this event as pickups, Jeeps and pro stock vehicles line up side by side in a drag race. But it’s not your typical drag race. This track is going to be muddy. The racers will line up with the traditional drag racing Christmas tree starting lights just waiting for the green light to flash. They will hit the gas, and the mud will fly as they race toward the finish line. These guys are fast – running 180 feet in 3 seconds. There will be several classes of trucks running from Modifieds down to Bone Stock Trucks — a class for street legal daily driver trucks. The stock classes will drag race side by side, while the more modified units will do timed drags.

This event is open to local contestants too. So if you think you have a fast truck, you are invited to come out and enter this event. Bring your helmet and come to the back pit gate after 11:30 a.m. to sign in.

Admission is $10 for the mud drags. Just a reminder that the 2016 Bureau County Fair demolition derby will be held on Saturday this year instead of Sunday. There will be two shows. At 11 a.m. Saturday, the $10,000 to win Four Man Team Demo will be held. After it’s over, enjoy the fair for a few hours and come back to the grandstand at 4:30 p.m. for the kids Power Wheels demo. The traditional fair demolition derby begins at 5 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are available now at the fair secretary’s office. Get admission for both demos for $20 or one for $15. Box seats are $5 more.

Horsing around at the Bureau County Fair PRINCETON — If you love horses the Bureau County Fair is the place to be on Saturday, Aug. 27, and Sunday, Aug. 28.

On Saturday, come out to the McCutchan Arena and watch the speed and action of the barrel racers. The horses and riders zip around the three barrels in the arena in a cloverleaf pattern in a timed event. There are riders of all ages – from children just starting out to experienced barrel racers.

Then watch the flag race where riders have to grab a flag and gallop to the other end of the arena and try to stick the flag into a bucket as they run by. It’s a challenge.

The other class is called poles or pole bending. The horse and rider weave in and out of several poles set up in a line down the center of the arena. Their goal is to go fast and not knock the poles over as they twist and turn past them and then run back to the finish line. This event begins at 9 a.m.

At 9 a.m. Sunday, the open horse show begins with their halter classes and continues after lunch with performance classes.

If you want to see some beautiful quarter horses and ponies, this is the show to go to. Along with their confirmation classes, they will be competing in English and Western riding classes throughout the day.

You can even see youth and adults compete in showmanship classes where the exhibitor is judged, rather than the horse. Walk by the trailers in the parking area for a close up view of the wellgroomed horses.

Sunday at 10 a.m., the halter classes begin for the draft horse show in the McCutchan Arena. Always a crowd favorite, the six-horse hitch will begin at about

1 p.m. in the arena. Following that class will be other team hitches and cart classes. There will also be a draft riding class where the exhibitor can choose to ride in English or Western tack. Three breeds of draft horses are expected to attend – Clydesdales, Belgians and Percherons. Check out their dinner plate-sized hooves as they trot around the arena.

Visit the barn after the show and see how big these gentle giants are up close.

Admission for these shows is included in your daily admission fee. Bring a lawn chair and sit by the show ring or find a spot on the bleachers. You will be amazed how the ground rumbles and the harness jingles as the huge teams trot by you.

OGLESBY — Dr. Brian Holloway and the board of directors of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra have announced the concerts for its 67th season.

The board welcomes back the exciting and highly-acclaimed conductor of the orchestra, Lucia Matos. The 2016-17 season will present diverse programs and artists, including world-renowned violinist Rachael Barton Pine, featured soloist for the December concert. Casting call for Stage 212’s ‘Almost, Maine’ is Aug. 19-20

LASALLE — Director Dave Roden has announced that auditions for Stage 212’s fall 2016 production, “Almost, Maine,” John Cariani’s light comedy about falling in and out of love, will be Friday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 20, at 2 p.m. at the theater, located at 700 First St. in LaSalle.

Roden will be casting four men and four women able to play ages 19-35. All actors will play multiple roles. Those auditioning will be asked to read selected passages

from the script. Familiarity with the script is not required to audition. Perusal scripts are available by contacting the Stage 212 ticket office at 815-224-3025. Those unable to attend the scheduled auditions and wishing to arrange an alternate audition opportunity should also contact the ticket office.

“Almost, Maine” will be presented Nov. 4-13.

Stage 212 auditions are open to all regardless of prior theatrical experience.

Stage 212 will present ‘At Last! with Cunio’

LASALLE — Stage 212 has announced a special concert coming soon to the Illinois Valley.

Popular stage performer and recording artist Michael Cunio will appear in concert at the theater, 700 First St. in LaSalle in “At Last! with Cunio” Saturday, Aug. 20, at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 21, at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the performances will benefit Stage 212.

After playing Corny Collins in Broadway’s “Hairspray,” Tommy DeVito in “Jersey Boys,” and making a name for himself as the “electrifying wailer” in the PBS sensation “Under the Streetlamp,” Cunio is thrilled to be coming direct from New York City to the Illinois Valley to present his concert to benefit Stage 212. Described as “the spawn of Freddie Mercury and Janis Joplin,” Cunio currently averages

150 shows a year playing and recording with members of The Roots, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, Post Modern Jukebox, Harry Connick Jr. and the Jazz At Lincoln Center Orchestra, with their gloriously gritty debut album, “Back Alley Soul,” which debuted at No. 6 on iTunes! This special performance will feature hits by Etta James, James Brown, Aretha Franklin and many more.

OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association invites people to visit its recently updated and redesigned website, www.reddickmansion.org.

The new design on the home page includes a photo slide show (photos by RMA Board member Farley Andrews), an easily accessible Calendar of Events, and information about mansion hours and tour times.

“We’ve been working on this project, updating our website, for more than a year,” said Diane Sanders, president of the RMA. “Hundreds of volunteer hours have gone into this project — including more than 300 hours by our webmaster, Jim Keating. Jim has done an amazing job for us. We are very happy with the results.”

“It is a ‘work in progress’”, according to website committee chair and RMA Board member Ashley Bloomquist Baron.

“We are still working on a few areas, including adding items for purchase.

However, people interested in sup-

porting the mansion can now become members or make a donation online.

This is a great addition to our website.”

According to Sanders, the website features almost 100 photos of the mansion, both past and present.

“We scoured our files and members’ cell phones, computers and cameras to get the photos we wanted. We also took photos of specific areas and events we wanted to feature on the website.”

One of the more interesting details: the background pattern behind most of the information on the website is a gently-faded photo of the custom-made carpet in the East Parlors of the mansion.

The Reddick Mansion, built in 1858, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is open to the public for tours.

The Mansion, at 100 W. Lafayette St. in Ottawa, also has meeting/reception rooms available for rent for special events.

Homework for parents Your child’s back-to-school health checklist Summer fun is nearing an end. It’s almost time to put away the swimsuits and dust off the book bags. More than 50 million students will head into the classrooms in a few weeks. The nation’s emergency physicians say now is the time to get everyone’s health in check.

“For many, the focus is on back-toschool clothes and supplies, which is important,” said Jay Kaplan, MD, FACEP, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians. “But it’s equally, if not more important to also take time to schedule routine doctor visits and to make sure that your child’s health information is all organized.”

Here are a few things you should do now. Organize your child’s medical history records and emergency medical contact information. Complete a consent-to-treat form and give copies to the school nurse and any day care providers to keep in your child’s record and to take with them if your child should need to go to the emergency department. The form will allow caregivers to authorize medical treatment. The form should include information related to prescription medications, medical problems or previous surgeries as well as pertinent family history and emergency contacts. An emergency information form is also available for children with special needs.

Coordinate with the school nurse and your child’s physician to develop action plans for any health issues, such as asthma or food allergies. Communicate these plans to all appropriate caregivers.

Schedule medical and dental checkups before school starts. Some children will need immunizations. Consider vision and hearing tests, since impairment can adversely affect learning. Consider a sports check-up if your child will be playing in sports.

Review and do a dry run with your child of his or her route to school, explaining potential hazards along the way. If your child walks to school, make sure he or she understands potential traffic dangers. If your child takes the bus, establish a safe, visible pick up/drop off spot, preferably with a group of children and in an area where they can be clearly seen by adults. If your child drives to school, make sure he or she obeys all laws and wear seatbelts.

Make sure your children know how to telephone for help. Post emergency contact numbers by every telephone in your home. Have them practice how to call 911 or the local emergency number and give their names address and a brief description of the problem.

Develop a family emergency plan in case something happens on the way to (or from) and while at school. Be aware of the emergency and evacuation plans for your children’s schools.

Alexander Pool goes to the dogs PRINCETON — The Princeton Park District is inviting all pooches for a dip in the Alexander Pool. The event is set for Saturday, Aug. 27. Small dogs will be welcome from 11 a.m. to noon, with larger dogs getting their chance to get their paws wet from noon to 1 p.m. Prior to this event, the pool will have been closed for the human season and open this day only for the canine season.

Only social dogs are allowed, and there is no swimming for pet owners at this time — only for the dogs. Dogs must be on a leash until they are in the water.

Food service course offered at St. Paul MENDOTA — A food service sanitation manager certification course will be offered at OSF St. Paul Medical Center, Mendota Community Hospital, 1401 E. 12th St. in Mendota. The class will be held in Conference Room C. The class will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, with the test at 4 p.m.. The cost is $100. This is a state-approved, eight-hour course for

the Illinois Food Safety Certification.

All food service facilities are required to have certified managers. Just need to retest for your current certification? This course covers both renewal and new certifications.

Proposed solar farm informational meeting set The Bureau, Henry and LaSalle County Farm Bureaus will host informational meetings on a proposed solar project.

On Monday, Aug. 29, at 6:30 p.m., the meeting will be held at LaSalle County Farm Bureau office, 4201 Columbus St., Ottawa.

On Tuesday, Aug. 30, at 9 a.m., the meeting will be held at the Annawan Community Building, 206 W. Front St., Annawan.

The landowners are invited to the presentation. Garrett Thalgott, an attorney with

the Illinois Agricultural Association Office of General Counsel, will be presenting information related to the project. Topics of discussion are contract law basics, lease terms, compensation structure, landowner obligations and much more. Everyone who is interested is invited to attend either of the meetings.

PRINCETON — Thursday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 p.m., Ann Crosby of Annie’s Little Pots will give a demonstration, which is intended for adults to get a hands-on experience, with making a bowl from clay on the pottery wheel. This does not include a take home project but will be fun and educational for all participants.

Monday, Aug. 22, at 6:30 p.m., Monday Movies: A former wartime pilot who was traumatized and is now an alcoholic boards a plane to attempt to win back his girlfriend, Elaine, despite the fact he now has a fear of flying.

Thursday, Aug. 25, at 5:30 p.m., a smartphone class will be held. Representatives from Illinois Valley Cellular will lead the class and cover the basics including getting to know a smartphone, how to connect to WiFi, basic setup and overview, email, picture messaging, voicemail, the App store and how to download apps, button configuration and fun tips and tricks.

The library is once again planning an author fair on Oct. 22. This year, the library is looking for published authors to join the second annual author fair. Applications can be received by emailing landerson@princetonpl.org or can be picked-up at the library.

This is a free event, but authors must reserve their spot by filling out an application.

LAMOILLE — Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday, which is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m.

Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 2016-17 fiscal year. The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov.

14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class.

Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — There will be another junior high program later in the month of August.

Ideas are still being thought out, but there will be snacks involved. More than likely, it will take place on Saturday, Aug. 27, in the afternoon. Stay tuned to Walnut Public Library on Facebook, and here in the newspaper.

We are also still looking for Walnut High School annuals. The years we still need are: 1932, 1933, 1934, 1935, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1943, 1944, 1945. You don’t even have to donate them permanently; we would just like to borrow them. We are having all our annuals put on CDs for easier reference. We would only need them for about 8-12 weeks. RAILS Executive Director Dee Brennan wins distinguished library association award Deirdre (Dee) Brennan, executive director of the Reaching Across Illinois Library System (RAILS), is the 2016 recipient of the Illinois Library Association’s (ILA’s) Atkinson Memorial/Demco Award.

The award recognizes an individual, group, program or institution for sustained activity and contributions having a lasting impact on librarianship.

The award is named for the late Hugh Atkinson, a huge proponent of all different types and sizes of libraries sharing materials. Atkinson brought groundbreaking technology to Illinois libraries during the 1970s and 1980s, by connecting catalogs from multiple libraries via a highly developed computerized network for its time.

Following in Atkinson’s footsteps, Brennan has been an enthusiastic and tireless advocate for resource sharing and multitype library cooperation throughout her career, and for removing barriers and bringing as many participants to the table as possible, regardless of library type, size

or financial capability. Her underlying philosophy is that we are all “stronger together.”

Since coming to RAILS in January 2013, Brennan has led the development of additional services for RAILS’ 1,300-plus member libraries, resulting in benefits and significant cost savings to libraries and library users throughout the RAILS 27,000-mile service area. She has also successfully led development of a variety of statewide initiatives, including the very popular eRead Illinois e-book project.

The Atkinson Award will be presented in October at the 2016 Illinois Library Association Conference in Rosemont.

RAILS provides delivery, shared online catalogs, e-book services, talking book services, continuing education programs, communication services and other support to all types of libraries in northern and western Illinois.

Meet the Storm MANLIUS — Bureau Valley High School will host the 2016 Meet the Storm Night for all fall sports/activities on Friday, Aug. 19.

Beginning at 6 p.m., all participants in fall activities will be introduced at the football field. At the conclusion, all parents/athletes will meet with their respective coaches.

Following team meetings, the football and volleyball teams will hold a short practice/scrimmage.

In case of inclement weather, all introductions will take place inside the gymnasium.

Meet the Lady Devils

SPRING VALLEY — Hall High School and volleyball coach Demi Salazar will host a Meet the Lady Devils night starting at 5 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 18. It promises to be an interactive experience for all.

Salazar said the night will feature opportunities for spectators to come in and pass or serve with the Lady Devils in a fun night for kids with the opportunity to meet the Lady Devils.

There will be games for the kids to come in and try to win prizes ranging from gift certificates to apparel for the adults. A 50/50 raffle will include the opportunity for those in attendance to come down on the court and serve or pass for the opportunity to win prizes.

Blue-White Scrimmage

PRINCETON — The annual Blue-White Scrimmage at Princeton High School will be Friday, Aug. 19, at Bryant Field.

The event begins at 6 p.m. with the national anthem by the Star Spangled Singers.

Introduction of all participants in fall activities will begin at 6:15 p.m. The F/S football scrimmage will start at 6:35 p.m. There will be performances starting at 6:45 p.m. by the poms, cheer and band with the varsity football scrimmage scheduled for 6:55 p.m.

Boys soccer will hold a Blue-White Night at 6 p.m.

Thursday, Aug. 18, at Bryant Field.

There will be a Meet the Tigresses Night for volleyball at 6 p.m. Monday, Aug. 22, in Prouty Gym.

Tampico slowpitch tournament

TAMPICO — The fourth annual double-elimination men’s slowpitch tourney in Tampico will be Saturday, Aug. 20. This is primarily a men’s tournament, but women are allowed to play also. Players must be at least 16 years of age to play, but 16 and 17 year olds need parental consent.

There will be a 10-team limit. If there is more interest generated, it could be moved to a two-day tournament.

Cost is $125 per team.

There is a payout for Top 3 teams. To keep entry fees down, teams will be required to supply an umpire for the following game depending on where they are in the bracket after first round. Placing games will have umpires provided.

The tournament is a fundraiser to support the Tampico ball diamonds.

Blind baseball team coming to Streator

STREATOR — The Streator Hardscrabble Lions Club is sponsoring the Chicago Comets, a blind baseball team, at 2 p.m.

Saturday, Aug. 27, at Sherman School in Streator.

The game is played with the exception of the pitcher, catcher and spotters in the outfield being blindfolded. The pitcher will pitch the ball that beeps to the batter. If the batter should hit the ball, either the first base or third base will beep. The object is for the batter to get to the base by listening to the beep before the ball is fielded.

Admission is free. Donations will be accepted.

Ladd 5K walk/run

LADD — The Ladd Men’s Club will sponsor

the fourth annual 5K walk/ run to benefit veterans on Saturday, Aug. 20, at War Memorial Park in Ladd.

Check-in will be from 7 to 8:45 a.m., with opening ceremonies/color guard at 9 a.m. The race will start after the opening ceremonies. The cost is $15 for adults, $5 for children under 12.
