Ready or not ...! For area schools, the first bell is about to ring, and excited children will be filing into their new classrooms for the 2017-18 school year. Likewise, teachers have spent the past several weeks readying their classrooms for their news students — preparing their decorations, assignments, lessons plans and more. Whether it’s your child’s first day of school or you’re sending your high school student off for his/her final year, there will be a lot to do, a lot to plan for and a lot to think about before that first school bell rings. Experts tout the importance of a good breakfast for children. While some schools offer a breakfast program, others do not; so it’s important to enlist your child in helping to come up with a breakfast that will be nourishing, while helping to sustain them until lunchtime. Specific decisions will also have to be made as to whether your child will eat their noon meal from what is offered at his/her school or if they’ll bring their lunch from home. Whichever venue ensures your child will eat their noon time meal is the best options for you and your child. Other important elements are a regular bedtime — making sure your child gets plenty of sleep, appropriate clothing for the weather, and perhaps the most integral part of a successful school year is a good relationship between teachers, parents and students, since a child’s success in school is a group effort. Maybe find out how you can be a helpful volunteer in your child’s classroom. Teachers around the county will appreciate any help they can get from parents and grandparents. IV Scene photo/Dave Cook
