100 years old!

Sheffield Library ready to celebrate!

Sheffield’s Carnegie Library is celebrating 100 years this month with a celebration set for Saturday, Aug. 17. A variety of events have been planned. The festivities begin at 11 a.m. with children’s games through noon, and tours of the library will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A special U.S. Postal Services stamp station will also be conducted at the library from noon to 3 p.m. A free outdoor lunch at the adjacent Veterans Park is from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Jack Ness will provide entertainment. A program at the park shelter begins at 1 p.m. and includes a history of the building and librarians, special speakers and a new flagpole/flag dedication at the library. The public is invited. There is no charge for any of the events.

Back to School: 2013-14

By August, summertime will be winding down, and vacations will be coming to an end, signaling that backto-school time is near. It’s a time that many children eagerly anticipate — catching up with old friends and making new ones, and settling into a new daily routine.

Parents and children alike scan the newspapers and websites looking for sales to shop for a multitude of school supplies and the latest clothing fads and essentials. Here are some of the many statistics associated with the return to classrooms by our nation’s students and teachers as provided by the Census Bureau.

• $8.5 billion: The amount of money spent at family clothing stores in August 2012. Sales at bookstores in August 2012 totaled $2 billion.

• For back-to-school shopping, choices of retail establishments abound: In 2011, there were 28,128 family clothing stores, 7,093 children and infants clothing stores, 25,448 shoe stores, 8,144 office supply and stationery stores, 21,227 sporting goods stores, 8,407 bookstores and 8,625 department stores.

• 79 million: The number of children and adults enrolled in school throughout the country in October 2011 — from nursery school to college. They comprised 26.9 percent of the entire population age 3 and older.

• 77 percent: Percentage of children 3 to 6 enrolled in kindergarten who attended all day, as of October 2011.

• 73 percent: Percentage of children 3 to 6 years old who are enrolled in school.

• 25 percent: Percentage of elementary through high school students who had at least one foreign-born parent in October 2011.

• 11.8 million: Number of school-age children (5 to 17) who spoke a language other than English at home in 2011; 8.5 million of these children spoke Spanish at home.

• 15 percent: Percentage of all college students 35 and older in October 2011. They made up 32 percent of those attending school part time.

• 42 percent: Percentage of 18- to 24 year olds enrolled in college in 2011.

• 52: Percentage of students enrolled in college, who worked less than full time, year-round in 2011; 20 percent worked full time, year-round.

• 3,068,911: Number of enrolled high school students who work less than full time, year-round; 145,740 students in high school worked full time, year-round.

• 12.0 million: Number of people age 25 and over who held a bachelor’s degree in business in 2011. Business degrees were reported by 20 percent of the population with a bachelor’s degree followed by education (14 percent), science and engineering related fields (9 percent), social sciences and engineering, which were not statistically different from each other (8 percent); biological, agricultural and environmental sciences (6 percent), and other and liberal arts and history, which were not statistically different from each other (5 percent); psychology (5 percent); literature and languages (4 percent); computers, mathematics and statistics (4 percent); visual and performing arts (4 percent); communications (4 percent); and physical and related sciences (3 percent).

• $81,761: Average earnings of full-time, year-round workers 18 and older with an advanced degree (bachelor’s degree or higher) in 2011. Workers whose highest degree was a bachelor’s had mean earnings of $70,459.

Mean earnings for full-time, year-round workers with a high school diploma (includes GED certificate) was $40,634, while workers with less than a ninth grade education had $26,545 average earnings.

BBB survey says consumers first complain to businesses CHICAGO — A majority of consumers who are displeased with a product or service prefer to complain directly to a business or manufacturer before taking any other actions, according to a recent Better Business Bureau poll. The poll also shows that few consumers go online to state their dissatisfaction.

The largest single response (43 percent) of unhappy consumers in the poll was to verbally complain to the business. Others would simply never return to the business again

(32 percent), email the business or manufacturer (11 percent) or verbally tell others not to use the business or product (9 percent).

The poll was taken by 740 BBB website visitors. It was run from mid-June until mid-July.

BBB advises consumers to write to businesses when they have complaints. By writing complaints, a consumer is able to explain the situation and give the business a thorough understanding of their expectations.

For businesses, complaints should be viewed as opportunities to change and improve and should take negative experiences as an incentive to explore their practices.

The data emphasizes the need for businesses to make consumer interaction a positive experience. It also shows that consumers would help businesses by giving honest feedback about products and services.

Illinois tourism numbers break record CHICAGO – Gov. Pat Quinn has announced that Illinois hosted more than 99 million domestic visitors in 2012, a 6.1 percent increase over the record 93.3 million U.S. residents who visited Illinois in 2011. This surge in tourism generated more than $31 billion for the state’s economy in 2012, and the numbers will be even higher when international visitor numbers are available later this summer.

This marks the second year in a row that Illinois’ visitor numbers broke records and outpaced the national average of 5.4 percent, highlighting the industry’s vital contributions to Illinois’ economic growth, job creation and tax revenue.

Bolstered by a surge in leisure travel, the Illinois tourism industry generated nearly $31 billion in 2012 from domestic visitors alone, up 5 percent from last year’s record-breaking domestic travel expenditures of $29.5 billion. Preliminary data indicate that international visitor numbers are also on the rise. International numbers will be released later this summer.

“The tourism industry plays a vital role in growing Illinois’ economy, providing valuable jobs for residents and spurring business of all sizes,” Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) Director Adam Pollet said.

State and local tax revenues from tourism totaled more than $2.3 billion in 2012, an increase of more than $124 million. State tax revenue rose 5.3 percent to $1.6 billion, while local tax revenue rose 6.6 percent to more than $699 million. Initial estimates indicate the Illinois travel industry workforce grew by 1.9 percent in 2012. Final figures will be released later this summer.

“We are always looking for innovative ways to share Illinois’ unique stories with the world and to encourage visitors to discover all that the state offers,” Illinois Office of Tourism Deputy Director Jen Hoelzle said. “Our efforts drive visitors to the people, places and experiences that make a trip to Illinois memorable.”

Illinois Valley Community Hospital hosts blood drive PERU — Illinois Valley Community Hospital will host an American Red Cross blood drive from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 16 in conference room A. Blood donors who have not given in the eight-week period before Aug. 16 will be eligible to donate at the IVCH drive.

The Red Cross says

blood donors need to be at least 17 years old, in good health, and weigh at least 110 pounds. Double red cell donors can give at the IVCH blood drive.

Sanitation manager course PRINCETON — The Greenfield Home Multi Purpose Room, 508 Park Ave. East, Princeton, will host a Food Service Sanitation Manager Certification Course from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 16 through Saturday, Aug. 17 with a test Saturday at 4 p.m.

This is a state approved 15-hour course for the Illinois Food Safety Certification. All food service facilities are required to have certified managers. Chicken dinner fundraiser LADD — The Ladd American Legion Ladies Auxiliary of Post 938 in Ladd will hold a chicken dinner fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 8, at Rip’s in Ladd.

The donation is $7.

Choices will be light, dark or strips; beverages are extra. There will be a bake sale, 50/50 drawing and raffle.

Food court Oh, those wonderful summer vegetables fresh from the garden, so many ways to fix zucchini. You can always hide it in bread and kids will never know it’s in there, a wonderful way for them to get their fresh veggies.

Summer Vegetable Cobbler 2 tablespoons butter 3 small zucchini, sliced 1 small sweet red pepper, finely chopped 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, minced 2 tablespoons all purpose flour 1 cup 2% milk 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper *** Biscuit Topping 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 tablespoons cold butter 1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese 3 tablespoon minced fresh basil 2/3 cup 2% milk Preheat oven to 400°. In a large skillet, heat butter over medium-high heat. Add zucchini, red pepper and onion, cook and stir 10 to 12 minutes or until zucchini is crisp tender. Add garlic, cook 1 minute longer. In a small bowl, whisk flour, milk, salt and pepper; stir into pan. Bring to a boil, stirring constantly, cook and stir 2 to 3 minutes or until sauce is thickened. Spoon into a greased 8-inch square baking dish. For topping: In a small bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt. Cut in butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Stir in cheese and basil. Add milk. Stir just until moistened. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls over filling.

Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until filling is bubbly and biscuits are golden brown.

Zucchini Corn Medley 2 small zucchini, cubed 1 cup frozen corn 1/4 cup chopped onion 2 tablespoons butter or margarine 1/4 cup spaghetti sauce 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese In a saucepan, sauté the zucchini, corn and onion in butter until tender. Stir in spaghetti sauce and seasonings. Heat through. Stir in the cheese until melted.

Serves 4.

Zucchini Nut Bread 2 cups sugar 1 cup canola oil 3 eggs 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 3 cups all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon baking soda 1 teaspoon grated lemon peel 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 2 cups shredded zucchini (about 2 medium) 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans Preheat oven to 350°. Grease two 8-by-4-inch loaf pans. In a large bowl, beat sugar, oil, eggs and vanilla until well blended. In another bowl, whisk flour, salt, baking soda, lemon peel, cinnamon and baking powder; gradually beat into sugar mixture, mixing just until moistened. Stir in zucchini and walnuts. Transfer to prepared pans. Bake 55 to 65 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool 10 minutes before removing from pans to wire racks to cool.

Zucchini Apple Salad 2 medium red apples, chopped 2 small zucchini, chopped, 1/2 cup coarsely chopped walnuts 2/3 cup Italian salad dressing In a serving bowl, toss the apples, zucchini, walnuts and salad dressing. Serve immediately. Serves 6. 2/3 cup prepared with fat free salad dressing equals 114 calories, 6 grams fat, 13 grams carbohydrates, 2 grams fiber, 3 grams protein.

BBQ Burgers ‘n’ Veggies 1 1/2 pounds lean ground beef 1 envelope (1 ounce) onion soup mix, like Lipton Beefy onion 1 1/4 cups barbecue sauce, divided 1 1/2 cups sliced zucchini 1 1/2 cups sliced yellow squash 1 1/2 cups sliced carrots 2 tablespoons minced garlic 1/4 cup light Italian dressing 3 ears corn, halved In bowl, mix beef, soup mix and 3/4 cup barbecue sauce; shape into 6 patties. In separate bowl, toss next 5 ingredients. Coat 6 sheets heavy duty foil with cooking spray. Add patties, top with remaining barbecue sauce. Add corn and veggies.

Fold foil to enclose, double sealing seams. Grill 15 minutes or until patties are done. Let sit 1 minute.

Carefully open and serve.

Zucchini Cake 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour 2 cups sugar 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon baking powder 1/2 teaspoon baking soda 1 cup vegetable oil 4 eggs 2 cups shredded zucchini 1/2 cup chopped walnuts *** Frosting 1 package (3 ounces) cream cheese softened 1/4 cup butter or margarine, softened 1 tablespoon milk 1 teaspoon vanilla, extract 2 cups confectioners sugar Additional chopped walnuts In a mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cinnamon, salt, baking powder and baking soda.

Combine oil and eggs, add to dry ingredients and mix well. Add zucchini. Stir until thoroughly combined. Fold in walnuts if desired. Pour into a greased 13-by-9-by-2-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted near the center comes out clean. Cool.

For frosting: In a small mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, butter, milk and vanilla until smooth.

Add confectioners sugar and mix well. Frost cake.

Sprinkle with nuts. Store in the refrigerator.

Makes 20 to 24 servings.

Crispy Grilled Zucchini with Marinara 1 can (14 1/2 ounces) diced tomatoes with basil, oregano and garlic, undrained 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste 1/2 cup water 2 teaspoon sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon dried basil 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano 1 egg 1/3 cup prepared Italian salad dressing 1 cup Italian style panko (Japanese) bread crumbs 2 medium zucchini, cut diagonally into 1/4-inch slices In a large saucepan, combine the first seven ingredients. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, simmer, uncovered, for 5 to 10 minutes or until thickened, stirring occasionally. Meanwhile, in a shallow bowl, whisk egg and salad dressing. Place bread crumbs

in another shallow bowl. Dip zucchini slices in egg mixture, then coat with bread crumbs. Cook on an indoor grill for 2 to 3 minutes or until golden brown.

Serve with marinara.

Zucchini Beef Soup 1/2 pound ground beef 2 celery ribs, thinly sliced 1/3 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped green pepper 1 can (28 ounces) diced tomatoes, undrained 3 medium zucchini, cubed 2 cups water 1 1/2 teaspoons Italian seasoning 1 teaspoon salt, optional 1 teaspoon beef bouillon granules 1/2 teaspoon sugar Pepper to taste Shredded Parmesan cheese In a large saucepan, cook beef, celery, onion and green pepper over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and veggies are tender; drain. Stir in the tomatoes, zucchini, water, Italian seasoning, salt, bouillon, sugar and pepper. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 20 to 25 minutes or until zucchini is tender. Garnish with Parmesan cheese.

Serves 6. One serving with lean ground beef equals 106 calories, 10 carbs, 4 grams fat, 2 grams fiber, 10 grams protein.

Zucchini Fritters

1 container (6 ounces) 2% Greek yogurt 2 teaspoon lime juice 1 teaspoon lime zest 1 1/4 teaspoons salt 1 1/2 pounds zucchini, shredded 1/2 cup sliced scallions 1/2 cup cilantro, chopped, plus more for garnish 1 egg yolk, beaten 1/3 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/4 cup canola oil Heat oven to 200°. In a small bowl, mix yogurt, lime juice, lime zest and 1/4 teaspoon of the salt until smooth. Squeeze shredded zucchini in a clean kitchen towel until most of the moisture is absorbed. In a medium bowl, combine zucchini, scallions, 1/2 cup of the cilantro, the egg, flour, remaining 1 teaspoon salt and the pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons of the oil over medium high heat in a large sauté pan. When shimmering, add zucchini mixture in four 1/4 cup portions. Flatten fritters with a spatula until they are 3 inches in diameter.

SHEFFIELD – The Sheffield Public Library will be celebrating the 100-year anniversary of its Carnegie library this Saturday, Aug. 17.

Events begin at 11 a.m. and include building tours, a special stamp cancellation, a free picnic-style lunch, entertainment, special speakers and more. The public is invited.

LADD – The Ladd Public Library currently has two card catalogs it is trying to sell. There is a larger catalog with 40 drawers and a smaller catalog with 12 drawers.

The librarians are also pleased to announce the library’s biographies purchased through the Back to Books Grant are now available to be checked out. The new biographies should appeal to a variety of ages and interests.

Some of the new titles include, “Stan Mikita: Forever a Blackhawk,” “Out of the Blue: Victor Cruz,” “Ghosts of War,” “Trouble Begins at 8: A Life of Mark Twain” and many more.

The library is also interested in re-energizing the adult book club this fall. The book club typically meets once per month to discuss a book chosen by the group.

Anyone who is interested in joining the book club may sign-up at the library.

DEPUE – The Selby Township Library hosts a blood pressure and blood sugar screening from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. on the second Tuesday of each month. The screening is sponsored

by St. Margaret’s Health and is free and open to the public.

The library’s summer reading program is winding down. Anyone who has completed the program may now pick-up prizes. Children receive school supplies for having attended programs and reading books.

Zephyr Route announces upcoming rail tours

Truck, tractor pull set for Aug. 24

PRINCETON — The most unique attraction at the 158th Bureau County Fair in Princeton is the demolition derby, set for 3 p.m. Aug. 25.

Demolition derbies always attract more people than any other event at the county fair because its fun for both drivers and spectators. “This is an opportunity to break every traffic law there is and maybe get paid for it.” The object is simple.

Two rows of cars line up, rear bumper to rear bumper. When the flag drops, they race toward each other and meet in a huge traffic accident. Drivers try to knock out all the other cars before they can knock him or her out. The spectators watching get as much of a kick out of the carnage as the drivers, picking their favorites and cheering them on.

Champagne and appetizers will start the journey followed by a delectable dinner served the traditional dining car way: white linens, fresh flowers, silverware, glassware, chinaware. Echo Bluff Park — close to the city ... far from the ordinary

There’s a new carver in town PRINCETON — This year’s Bureau County Fair in Princeton will feature a new carver, Luree Magee from Progressive Edges.

Timber Falls Tree Service will presents this carving specialist four times daily, as part of the free entertainment at the fair.

Magee will start with a log and will complete a variety of figures, from woodland creatures, farm animals and gators to totem poles and benches in as little as an hour to three hours time. The sculptures range from 2 to 9 feet tall. Audiences

attending these shows will see work begin, forms beginning to emerge from the wood. Fair-goers can return as often as they like to monitor the progress on the carvings, and watch as new creations pile up. Finally, all the craftsmanship will be auctioned on Aug. 25, the last day of the fair, in front of her display at 2:30 p.m.

The auction helps defray the cost of the fair.

PRINCETON — The entry deadline for this year’s Homestead Festival parade is Aug. 27.

Parade entries are encouraged to use the theme for this year’s festival which is “It’s Good To Be Home.” There is no entry fee to enter a unit in the parade.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this year’s Lovejoy Homestead Festival Parade must turn in an application. This would include any organization, church, club, band and class reunion that may want to have an entry in the parade.

The parade will step off at 1:30 p.m. Sept. 14 on Main Street. Several popular entries will be back again this year, including the South Shore Drill Team, Jesse White Tumblers, Generics and Black Hawk Pipes and Drums.

Rob was diagnosed with adenocarcinoma in June. It is stage 4. This cancer is terminal and there is no cure. He has been employed at LCN for more than 25 years.

Antique car cruise SPRING VALLEY — An antique car cruise to benefit the Spring Valley Historic Association will be Sept. 14 in downtown Spring Valley.

High ropes events are prescheduled, though public events are held sporadically. As certified instructors are required for each high ropes and zipping event, it is best to check the website for upcoming events. Check out schedule on www.echobluff.org. Schools, clubs, businesses, civic organizations and families have found Echo Bluff’s Challenge Course an excellent means of increasing individual confidence and group unity.

What was once a unique 200-by200-foot wooded paintball course has been doubled to the size of two football fields with the addition of a Speedball course at Echo Bluff Park.

The field has a ravine within, making challenges a bit more interesting. Natural obstacles and manmade bunkers create the perfect backdrop for creative warfare. The third Sunday of each month (Aug. 18) is the Red/Yellow game at Echo Bluff Park. This event is an organized challenge. The cost is $30 for adults and $25 for those in eighth grade and under, with unlimited air and CO2 during competition.

Each Friday during August is Free Field Fee Friday – meaning those with equipment will enjoy a free afternoon in the park! Rental is available for masks and guns, but the field fee is waived on Fridays.

Enjoy Disc Golf at Echo Bluff.

Hiking and biking enthusiasts are invited to “ride” the 7,000 yards of trails at Echo Bluff Park.

Though the weather has been temperate as of late, it is still too early to enjoy Echo Bluff’s premiere ice skating rink. This seasonal chilled outdoor rink has undergone some major renovation and will be up and ready when winter arrives. Plan now to enroll a child in hockey and ice skating camps.

Terror on the Trails, Echo Bluff’s annual Halloween event, is scheduled for Oct. 25 and 26. It will feature a “Ghostly Paintball” challenge.

Great on-the-go snack ideas for kids (StatePoint) Snack time can make or break an otherwise healthy diet.

So keeping tabs on what your kids are munching on between meals is important.

The bottom line, say experts, is to aim to nurture their bodies with pure, wholesome foods as close to nature as possible.

“Getting your kids hooked on fresh fruits and vegetables early will set them up for a lifetime of great eating habits,” says Mitzi Dulan, “America’s Nutrition Expert.”

Dulan offers is offering these tips for parents to help kids get their snack on, healthfully: • Plan ahead: Set up a grocery shopping routine

that allows you to have fresh foods on hand for the entire week. On school nights, reserve 10 minutes with the kids to pack the next day’s snacks together.

• Avoid high-calorie drinks: Wash snacks down with water or organic lowfat milk. Avoid giving your kids high-calorie and sugarfilled drinks such as sodas, juices and energy drinks.

• Make it colorful: Skip highly processed snacks such as candy bars, chips, fruit snacks and storebought cookies. Instead, complement fresh fruits and vegetables with peanut butter, hummus or low-fat dressings.

• Get them involved: Take your kids grocery shopping with you and

ask them to pick out their favorite fruits, vegetables and healthy snacks. Direct them toward options like whole wheat crackers, edamame (soybeans), trail mix with nuts and dried fruit, air-popped popcorn, Greek yogurt and unsweetened applesauce.
