The Bureau County Fair!

Fun for all ages is in store for those attending the annual Bureau County Fair, set for Aug. 20-24. As in years gone by, fair-goers will see a variety of attractions — some brand new and other favorites from previous fairs.

Besides all the exhibits from talented area folks, the animal shows will continue throughout the event. There will be plenty of free entertainment throughout the fairgrounds — music, shows and more. Grandstand shows include tractor pulls, The Beach Boys concert, an extreme bull riding show and the Demolition Derby.

A county worship service is set for Sunday morning. As always, there will be plenty of food from fair vendors and local vendors too. And the midway on the fairgrounds will be jam packed with plenty of rides, guaranteed to thrill the most adventurous as well as those who aren’t quite so daring. LJ’s Garden Cafe — where friendship and fun are mandatory

MAGNOLIA — In southeast Putnam County, far from the maddening crowd is the village of Magnolia and a restaurant where the term home cooking actually means ... well, home cooking.

LJ’s Garden Cafe at 114 N. Chicago St. is a booming business, popular with the local crowd and more than deserving of a onceover. But be warned; if you go there during the lunch hours, you will be making friends.

Laurie Smith is the owner of LJ’s and is up in the morning at 4 a.m.; she opens the cafe at 5 a.m. every day Tuesday through Sunday, serving up coffee and smiles for the farmers before they hit the fields.

The kitchen opens up at 6 a.m. with some great breakfast items. Smith will cook and serve throughout the day and then prepare foods for the following day after closing time; about 95 percent of the food served in the restaurant is homemade. She said she’s been working in the kitchen sometimes until 10 p.m.

While the Garden Cafe has been open for just a few years, Smith brings a lot of experience into the business.

“I’ve been in the restaurant business since I was 16,” Smith said. “I started out at the Four Corners with Mel Haig. I’ve been thinking about opening my own for at least 10 years.”

Laurie Smith small cafe tables, Smith has four tables that will seat eight comfortably with a four seater near the register. With the number of people who come in during the lunch hour, you’ll likely be joined by regulars if you come in as a party of two.

“If you’re sitting by yourself, you will have guests come in with you,” Smith said. “You will make friends that you didn’t know when you came in.”

Smith is the most hardworking person you’re liable to meet. When she’s not in the cafe, she’s either volunteering her time for nearly every organization in town or tending to her duties as village president.

some of the crafts she sells at the cafe; home decorations line the wall behind the cash register as well as the upstairs room which offers a bit of privacy when the crowd downstairs overflows. There are also picnic tables outside for al fresco dining during the warm months.

Locals rave about Smith’s desserts and chicken wraps, but she’s not afraid of trying something different. Occasionally she have alligator “bites” on the menu, and lately she’s trying turtle to see if it goes over.

LJ’s is open Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday until 2 p.m. and Tuesday and Friday until 8 p.m. Tuesday nights are is a taco special while fish specials are served on Friday nights. MCNABB – Monday, Aug. 18, at 6:30 p.m. the McNabb Branch Library will host Jim Kanas, who will bring together young and old alike through the

shared language of music.

In his program, American Roots Music, the performance traces the Kanas development of American music through its European, African and Latin roots — from early American to modern Jazz music and the origins of the blues, the thread of which is the living oral tradition of folk music and improvisation.

Kanas demonstrates, discusses, sings and performs on fiddle, spoons, saw, “dobro,” “sweet potato,” pocket instruments, flutes, banjo and others. Audience participation draws everyone into this highly acclaimed program and offers audiences an outstanding musical event.

Funding for this program was made possible through a grant from the Illinois Valley Fine Arts Trust and the Illinois Arts Council, a state agency.

The new hours for the McNabb Branch Library are from 9 a.m. to noon on Mondays; from 3 to 7 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays.

Saturday Stories — Every Saturday morning at 10 a.m. at the McNabb Branch Library for children in early elementary school. August will be filled with projects that include musical instru-

ments, wacky science experiments and awesome art projects.

Galaxy Girl will be part of free fair entertainment This Week The Hegeler Carus Mansion Summer Sunset Concert Series presents Bagshot Row at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 15, on the west lawn. Mansion grounds will open at 5:30 p.m. for picnics.

Admission to the grounds is $5. High school students are free by showing a valid student ID from any local high school.

The Back Door Lounge presents music with a view with Sons of the New Amish from 8 to 11 p.m.

Friday, Aug. 15, at Starved Rock Lodge. Grill will open at 5 p.m. Sons of the New Amish perform ‘70s, ‘80s, ‘90s music and original works.

She begins her act by climbing 80 feet into the air and performs an incredible aerial gymnastic routine from a trapeze dangling with no safety nets or devices. 3 2/3 cups flour 2 teaspoons baking powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 3 eggs 1/4 cup sugar 2 cups milk Vegetable oil for frying 2 tablespoons powdered sugar or as needed Mix together 1 3/4 cup flour, baking powder and salt in a bowl. Whisk together eggs, sugar and milk in a large bowl. Add flour mixture and beat until smooth. Continue to add remaining flour using only enough to achieve desired consistency. Batter needs to be thin enough to run through a funnel, with no lumps. Pour oil to a depth of 1 inch in a heavy bottom skillet, preferable cast iron. Heat to 375°. Fry until browned and drain on paper towels. Cover with powdered sugar shaken over all.

Elephant Ears

3/4 cup milk 3 tablespoons shortening 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon active dry yeast 2 cups flour Vegetable oil for frying 1 1/2 tablespoons cinnamon In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine milk, shortening, 1 tablespoon sugar and salt. Heat until shorten-

ing melts and sugar dissolves. Remove from heat and let cool to lukewarm, 110°. Sprinkle in yeast and let sit until foamy, about 2 minutes. Transfer mixture to a large bowl, and stir in enough flour to make dough. Kneed dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth. Transfer to an oiled bowl, and turn dough so it’s oiled all over, cover and let rise at room temperature until doubled in volume, about 30 minutes.

Pour oil to a depth of 1 inch in a deep heavy skillet preferable cast iron. Divide dough into 15 2-inch balls and roll each ball into 1/8inch thickness on a lightly floured surface. Carefully lower sheets into hot oil, one at a time. Fry 1 minute per side or until puffed and golden turning with tongs.

Drain on paper towels.

Combine cinnamon and sugar. Sprinkle over warm elephant ears.

Fried Cheese Curds Vegetable oil for frying 1 cup flour 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/4 cup milk 2 eggs 3/4 cup beer (half of a 12-ounce can) 2 pounds cheese curds, broken apart Keep curds cold until ready to dip and fry. Pour oil to a depth of 3 inches in a large heavy pot, preferably cast iron. Heat to 375°. Whisk together flour, salt, milk, eggs and beer to form a smooth, rather thin batter. Working in batches of 6 to 8, put curds

in batter and stir to coat.

Remove with a small wire mesh strainer or a slotted spoon, shaking curds to remove excess batter. Fry curds until golden brown, 1 to 2 minutes. Remove from oil with a slotted spoon. Drain on paper towel. Serve hot.

Corn Dogs

1 cup yellow cornmeal 1 cup flour 1/4 cup sugar 4 teaspoons baking powder 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon black pepper 1 egg 1 cup milk Vegetable oil for frying 16 beef hot dogs 16 wooden skewers In a bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and pepper.

Stir in egg, and milk. If batter gets too thick for dipping add 2 to 3 more tablespoons milk. Pour oil to a depth of 1 1/2 to 3 inches in a deep heavy bottomed skillet or cast iron skillet.

Pat hot dogs dry, and then insert a wooden skewer a little more than halfway into each hot dog. Dip hot dogs in batter and twirl until well coated. Working in batches of 2 submerge hot dogs in hot oil, fry until batter is lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Running Red Cross Walk PERU — Mark your calendars now for the 22nd annual Red Cross Walk, Run, Bike on Sunday, Aug. 24 at Baker Lake in Peru. Registration begins at noon with the event kicking off at 1 p.m. All registered participants will receive a T-shirt.

It’s not too late to get a team together through your workplace, club and organizations or with friends and family. Walk Run Bike is a fun, family-oriented celebration that includes food, drinks, raffles, music and outdoor games that participants look forward to year after year.

Kids will enjoy the Bike Rodeo that offers fun educational training and includes a free bike helmet (while supplies last).

Money raised support the local Red Cross’s local programs, including fire, flood, tornado and other disaster services training and response and mobile meal deliveries.

Gateway 5K PRINCETON — Gateway Services will hold its first Gateway 5K on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m., starting at the Bureau County Fairgrounds.

This 5K is for awareness of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The theme this year is Superhero Showdown. Runners can choose to dress up as a superhero of their choice.

There will be “villains” along the course with squirt phasers cooling the runners off as they move along the course.

The Gateway 5K Superhero Showdown will start and finish at the Bureau County Fair-

grounds. Runners and volunteers will be able to park there and registration will be in the main building.

Cost to enter the Gateway 5K is $20. After Aug. 15 it will be $35. All proceeds will go towards the programs Gateway Services provides.

Run/Walk for the Rec 5K

AMA Pro Flat Track 2014 motorcycle races are at Illinois State Fairgrounds Labor Day weekend SPRINGFIELD — Motorcycle racing fans will have a chance to cheer for their favorite stars of the AMA Pro Flat Track motorcycle racing series Aug. 29-31 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds.

Considered to be one of the fastest dirt tracks in the country, the one-mile track at the Illinois State Fairgrounds offers flag-

to-flag excitement, fast-paced action and thrills. The Labor Day weekend series is a Grand National Main Event, sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and sponsored by the Illinois Motorcycle Dealers Association.

The schedule for the weekend is:

• Aug. 29 — Amateur Short Track.

• Aug. 30 — AMA All-Star Short Track.

• Aug. 31 — AMA Pro Mile.

PERU — The 5K Race to benefit the Peru Recreation Summer Programs will be held Aug. 23 with check-in held at 7 a.m. at Parkside School in Peru. Entry fee is $20 before Aug. 18 and $25 on day of races.

Princeton High School Athletic Boosters offers new premium seating for Tiger football games

PRINCETON — Are you ready for some football? Want to have that perfect seat to watch your favorite Princeton Tiger play?

A new seating program will compliment the new bleachers at Princeton High School.

The Princeton Athletic Booster Club is offering a new premium reserved seating program for all home football games during the 2014 season. With the purchase of a premium reserved seat, football fans will get free admission into all home sophomore/varsity football games,

plus a free popcorn and drink at every home game. The price of the seat is also good for any playoff games too, however, the seat owner will have to pay for IHSA admission fees.

A variety of seat packages are available. The seats are located directly in front of the press box, with the Platinum row being the top row on down to the Gray row, which is the second row from the bottom. The different seating and prices are as follows: • Platinum seating: $75 each.

• Gold seating: $70 each.

• Silver seating: $65 each.

• Bronze seating: $60 each.

• Blue seating: $55 each.

• Gray seating: $50 each.

This section of seating in the new PHS bleachers will only be available for the premium seat ticketholders, which will be sold on a first come/first serve basis.

The sale of these premium seats begins on Blue/White Night, set for 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 22.

The sale of the seats benefit all 19 PHS athletic teams, not just the football program.
