Down and dirty with the MudCross Challenge The Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary MudCross Challenge is Saturday, Aug. 13, at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut.

This challenge is a three-to-four mile muddy obstacle course where participants run, walk, climb, crawl and slide their way through to the finish line. There is also a “Fun Run” for children, ages 5-12.

The MudCross Challenge is not a 5K race. Instead, it’s a fun-filled obstacle course that involves playing through a lot of mud — truly an event where families, friends, children and adults of all ages can join together and conquer the course. Everyone who finishes the course gets a medal.

Some of the obstacles are a cargo crawl, wall climbs, lumber haul, a balancing act, a rope pull and more.

For the serious mudders, there are four competitive heats which begin at 8 a.m.

Don’t want to get so muddy? The event welcomes spectators to watch the fun as well.

All proceeds from the event go to the Perry Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, which supports Perry Memorial Hospital through the purchase of equipment and more.

Loyal to the land From the Ground Up encourages farming industry to circulate locally

PRINCETON — There’s a reason we all salivate when the butter melts on the delicious sweet corn or fresh green beans during dinner, and anticipate the juicy flavor of a bowl of ripe strawberries — because they are not only heavenly to the taste buds, but healthy for the body.

And where does all this nutrition begin its journey to our well-being?

From the ground up.

Joy Kauffman, Bureau and Putnam County Health Department’s public health educator, has been working with five farmer’s markets — in Princeton, Walnut, Granville, Sheffield and Spring Valley — to formulate From the Ground Up, a movement driven by local talent and enthusiasm in crop development that keeps local products circulating the homestead.

Kauffman said there are 40 to 60 very talented growers participating in the program, which was boosted by a federal grant through the health department to promote local growers and food markets.

“Our farmers are involved in growing local food and raising animals all the way to the point of butcher. They are intentionally using practices

centered around sustainability, soil health and creating really nutrient-rich foods,” Kauffman said, noting the western third of Bureau County is a food desert, meaning people have limited access to food and nutritional resources.

“We have some of the best food in the world growing here in Bureau County, but a lot of our most sophisticated growers are sending that food into Chicago or the suburbs where people are willing to pay for it,” she said, adding there is some amazing soil native to the area. “Part of what we want to do is bring it home. People in the suburbs understand the value of the food, but we also want Bureau County residents to buy into growing, selling and consuming those quality products here.”

All human beings need to eat, but the cheap, industrialized system of dispersing mega-food with minimal nutrition and maximum calories is not good, Kauffman added, emphasizing the “culture” in agriculture.

“The farmer’s markets could be part of a cultural experience because you’re getting to know the farmers and their food,” she said, noting the United Nations has set up these sustainable development

goals that are the benchmarks for everything in international development right now. “Eliminate hunger and increase food security through sustainable agriculture — that’s exactly what we’re trying to do right here.”

Kauffman said monumental studies on nutrition have concluded one thing more than anything else … the more fruits and vegetables you eat, the healthier you are. Eating across the color spectrum of naturally-occurring colors maximizes health, and manufacturers know that, so they spend a lot of money on colorful packaging and artificial coloring, but are essentially handing out toxins in a box.

“My grandparents grew up farming, and they canned everything; so they ate what they grew,” Kauffman shared, noting Illinois residents used to eat more than three-quarters of what they grew 100 years ago; now they are estimated to eat around 10 percent of what they grow. “With From the Ground Up I’m trying to create this consortium of growers in this area committed to a certain level of excellence who are known for their reputation, and we’re getting that in the food world.”

The Bureau and Putnam

County Health Departments want to be a health and wellness center reducing and preventing chronic diseases. Kauffman said the things that are killing and disabling us — diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity — are by and large nutritionally-related.

“We don’t just want to get people to the farmer’s market, although that is a goal, but rather we want

grandparents teaching grandkids about gardening and canning and exercise while tending to the crops,” Kauffman said, noting Chicago is a big city with many resources, so we shouldn’t be sitting around asking ourselves where the jobs are. “There are people with money so close by, and they value what we have.”

The rolling grocery aisle Mobile food pantry to offer residents a food market in a parking lot

SPRING VALLEY — When people in Bureau County are hungry, but they can’t get to the supply of available food, there is only one thing to do … bring the food to them.

On Saturday, Aug. 27, the River Bend Mobile Food Pantry from Davenport, Iowa, will bring a refrigerated semi-trailer full of food to distribute to those who need it most.

The mobile food pantry will be set up at the DePue Lakefront Park shelter on First Street in DePue.

The Hall Township Food Pantry Board petitioned and was granted permission to offer the those who need food in the area a one-time mobile food pantry because the generous citizens who run the pantry realize pride and distance serve as barriers for those with empty stomachs.

The Hall Township Food Pantry’s serving area includes the towns of Arlington, Bureau, Cherry, Dalzell, DePue, Hollowayville, Ladd, Seatonville and Spring Valley. According to the latest census, 10,500 people reside in this area,

and nearly 1,000 “shop” at the pantry — close to one in every 10. Even as that seems like a rather high number, it unfortunately is not enough.

Feeding America, a U.S.based non-profit organization that is a nationwide network of more than 200 food banks that feed more than 46 million people through food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other community-based agencies, conducted their own survey and discovered over 3,200 residents in that giving area are “food insecure,” which means they qualify to become clients.

The day of the event, registration will be from 10:15 to 11 a.m. Food distribution will begin at 11 a.m. on a first-come basis,

and no appointments are necessary. Distribution usually lasts two to three hours, and all clients of the Hall Township. Food Pantry — and any other families in need — are invited to come fill their fridges and cupboards.

Jan Martin, director of the Hall Township Food Pantry, said this is an amazing opportunity for people who both deliver and receive the goods, and all clients of the food pantry are welcome to attend.

“This meets such a need in our area and in all areas,” she said, adding it would be great to do this all the time, even though the financial restraints don’t allow for that, but they are lucky to get the help they can.

Distribution will be outside, so participants are asked to dress for the warm weather, and laundry baskets or rolling carts are recommended, or at least welcomed at the event.

Agricultural endeavors Field Day set in Marshall County

Lil’ Spurs Rodeo full of thrills at Pow Wow Days in Tiskilwa

RUTLAND — On Sept. 1, the Soil Health Partnership, Illinois Corn Growers and Waterborne Environmental will host a Demonstration Farms Field Day at Kirk Kimble’s ground in Rutland.

Along with support from the Illinois Council on Best Management Practices, NRCS, the Marshall-Putnam River Conservancy, the Marshall-Putnam SWCD, the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau, the Wetlands Initiative, S&S Farm Chemical Inc., and Cropsmith Inc. – the field day will have several discussions and presentations on soil health, cover crops, water testing and local programs.

The morning begins at the Rutland American Legion with registration and a few presenters. From there, the group will move to Kirk Kimble’s ground, located at County Road 500 North for the demonstrations.

There will be six site stops at the field. Lunch will be served after the site demonstrations are complete.

Field day planned for Aug. 23 PRINCETON — Nutrient Stewardship of Northern Illinois and its partners have announced their summer field day. Events will take place at Madison Farms, 19917 1550 East St., Princeton, on Tuesday, Aug. 23, with registration starting at 8:30 a.m. and programs at 9 a.m.

The day’s events start with a welcome by Alan Madison in the main tent and then continue with speakers covering subjects relating to current nutrient loss reduction efforts, N Watch, nitrate testing and N rate plots and finally cover crops.

At the outside stations, participants will be able to take part in three sessions of their choosing. Exhibitors at outside stations will be talking about nitrogen stabilizers, precision technology, soil health, cover crops and starter fertilizers.

Water testing will be available for those landowners or operators who would like to test their tiles, streams or ponds for nitrates. Be sure to collect the sample within 24 hours of the test and keep refrigerated. When collecting, measure the flow and keep track how long it takes to fill a 2- (or 5-) gallon bucket.

These results will be kept anonymous and are only for private use.

Agricultural Museum open house HENNEPIN — The annual Agricultural Museum Open House of the Putnam County Historical Society will be from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 14, at 501 Old Highway 26 in Hennepin.

Visitors will be able to see the antique tractors and vehicles brought by local collectors as well as the permanent displays of agricultural equipment, tools, wildlife, coal mining, military memorabilia, an early 1900s general store, a post office, a one room school and a farm kitchen.

The “Crops for College” tractor drive, hosted by the Marshall-Putnam Farm Bureau’s Young Leaders group, will also stop at the museum for lunch, so there will be more tractors than usual.

At 1 p.m. filmmaker Stephen Parry will present “The Hayloft Gang: The Story of The National Barn Dance,” a Road Scholar program sponsored by the Illinois Humanities Council. The National Barn Dance was a variety show broadcast out of Chicago from 1924 to 1960 and was one of the most popular country music radio shows of the 1930s and ‘40s.

Everyone is invited, and admission is free. Pork chop lunches will be available for purchase.

The Agricultural Museum is handicapped accessible. The Pulsifer House, the historic house museum built in 1844, will also be open for tours, but is not handicapped accessible.

Annual walk/run will benefit veterans LADD — The Ladd Men’s Club will sponsor the fourth annual 5K walk/run to benefit veterans on Saturday, Aug. 20, at War Memorial Park in Ladd.

PRINCETON — The year was 1966, and the buzz in Princeton was a new business coming to North Main Street. With the town’s taste buds tingling, ice cream enthusiasts were anxious for the Dairy Queen to open its doors.

It’s been 50 years since the ice cream shop with its famous curly-topped ice cream cone opened, and current owners, Deb and Don Hubbard, are excited to commemorate the store’s history, not to mention the sweet future that lies ahead for the Dairy Queen, its customers and its staff.

On Saturday, Aug. 13, the Hubbards’ Dairy Queen will have a 50-year celebration at the North Main Street store. Plenty of sweet activities have been planned, and the Hubbards hope the community will come out and enjoy the fun, as they take a trip back in time, while still focusing on the future of the popular ice cream eatery.

In keeping with the 50-year anniversary, the Dairy Queen will offer plenty of 50-cent specials, including small ice cream cones and hot dogs. Games and prizes for children will be held from noon to 4 p.m. From 6 to 9 p.m., Deb Hubbard’s band, dubbed 212, will entertain the crowd with their classic rock and roll, blues and country music. Deb said the band has even been practicing some songs from 1966, and they’ve worked up about 10 songs to feature the 50-year anniversary. All the activities will be held in the empty lot directly behind the Dairy Queen.

The Hubbards purchased the Dairy Queen in 2015 and opened the doors for the first time in February of this year. Prior to that, Karen and Mark Townsend owned the Dairy

Queen for 15 years, after they bought it from Ray and Marjorie Zimmerman, who initially opened the store. “(The Zimmermans) were the first ones to open it,” Deb said. “Back then, it was just the walk-up window and ice cream. Karen and Mark took it over 15 years ago. They started with just the walk-up window, and then they added quite a bit on to it.”

In their first year as owners of the Dairy Queen, Deb said the transition has gone well.

She credits much of that to the employees.

“They made it so easy. Of course we had challenges ... but hey, the customers are coming to get ice cream. Our employees treat the customers well,” she said. “I give them so much credit. I try to tell them all the time how much I appreciate them and their knowledge.”

Don also owns a construction business, which has come in handy for repairs and upgrades at the Dairy Queen. Deb previously worked at the Prime Quarter for six years; before that, she was a stay-at-home mom.

“I can take charge. I like working with people,” Deb said. “I’m not a general. Instead, I like to be able to build people up and make them feel worthy. I really feel like I’m doing that — helping to build up their confidence.”

Deb said she also enjoys the customers, who oftentimes want to come in and reminisce about the Dairy Queen of days gone by.

She enjoys offering those same customers a wholesome family feeling inside the store.

“Some of the customers remember Dairy Queen from 50 years ago. It’s an honor to be part of that. I want to live up to those memories,” she said.

The Hubbards invite the public to share in the 50 years of fun during the celebration.

Pinta, Nina replicas docked in Davenport DAVENPORT, Iowa — On Tuesday, Aug. 9, the Pinta and the Nina, replicas of Columbus’ ships, docked in Davenport, Iowa, at Oneida Landing, 1201 E. River Drive, until their departure early Monday morning Aug. 22.

The ships open to the general public Thursday, Aug. 11. The Nina was built by hand and without the use of power tools and is considered to be the most historically correct Columbus replica

ever built. The Pinta was recently built in Brazil and is a larger version of the archetypal caravel. Historians consider the caravel the Space Shuttle of the 15th Century.

While in port, the general public is invited to visit the ships for a walkaboard, self-guided tour.

Admission charges are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors and $6 for students ages 5-16. Children 4 and under are free. The ships are open every day from 9

a.m. to 6 p.m. No reservations necessary.

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau will host a Prep Cook Freeze freezer meal event at 6 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 31, at the Farm Bureau.

The cost is $150, and you get 10 meals.

Each meal feeds about five people.

Here is how it works: You will register with the Farm Bureau office in order to attend. The evening of Aug. 31 you will bring a laundry basket and prepare for the fun. The Prep Cook Freeze com-

pany will bring all the containers and ingredients. Everyone in attendance will join together to prepare the meals.

In less than two hours, you will head for home with 10 meals ready for the freezer.

This event is held as a Foundation fundraiser, raising money to help support the Bureau County Ag in the Classroom Program.

Gateway to host summer raffle PRINCETON — Gateway Services Inc. will hold its first ever summer raffle, with all proceeds directed to the general operations fund.

On Saturdays, Aug. 13 and 20, Gateway staff and volunteers will be at the Psycho Silo Saloon to sell tickets and hold multiple 50/50 and donated item raffles. Each ticket is $10, with the top prizes being $2,000, $1,000 and $500.

This drawing will be held on Aug. 20.

Raffle items include various Harley Davidson apparel and memorabilia, local gift certificates and an auto-

The library is once again planning an author fair on Oct. 22. Last year, more than 30 local authors attended with books to sell, sign and discuss. This is a free event, but authors must reserve their spot by filling out an application.

LAMOILLE — Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday, which is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each partici-

pating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students.

The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — Saturday, Aug. 13, is the final day for patrons to pick-up prizes from the annual reading program.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 2016-17 fiscal year. The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May

8, 2017; and June 12, 2017.

All board meetings are open to the public.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

LADD —The library is sponsoring its new perpetual programs. These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library anytime a patron stops in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

The library is also sponsoring an adult summer reading program this year.

The library also sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The library is happy to be offering basket weaving classes. The final class will be held Saturday, Aug. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. Participants will weave tissue boxes. The class costs $15 and must be paid for at the time of registration. Registration sheets are available at the circulation desk.

IVCH 5K PERU — You can help yourself stay fit and also help the IVCH Foundation by signing up to run or walk in the annual IVCH Healthy Choices, Healthy You Fall Fitness 5K Saturday, Sept. 3.

This year’s IVCH 5K has two new features: It’s a fundraiser for the IVCH Foundation, which is raising money to help the hospital obtain a new MRI unit. And this year’s race will have team competition — runners can form teams and compete for the best times. Winners will be determined by totaling the times of the top three runners on each team.

Tampico slowpitch tournament

TAMPICO — The fourth annual double-elimination men’s slowpitch tourney in Tampico will be Saturday, Aug. 20.

This is primarily a men’s tournament, but women are allowed to play also.

Players must be at least 16 years of age to play, but 16 and 17 year olds need parental consent.

There will be a 10-team limit. If there is more interest generated, it could be moved to a two-day tournament.

Cost is $125 per team.

There is a payout for Top 3 teams. To keep entry fees down, teams will be required to supply an umpire for the following game depending on where they are in the bracket after first round. Placing games will have umpires provided.

The tournament is a fundraiser to support the Tampico ball diamonds.

AnchorAwards will be presented to the first overall male and female runner in the 5K and 10K runs.
