Widmark in words Local artist pens new book celebrating Princeton’s most famous resident

PRINCETON — A few years ago, Princeton artist Bart Kassabaum, who is normally creating art featuring wildlife, landscapes and rural scenery, finished his collage celebrating the film career of Richard Widmark, a 1932 graduate of Princeton High School.

He’s since moved from brush to book in order to raise local awareness of Widmark’s time in Princeton. “Becoming Richard Widmark” was a four-year endeavor for Kassabaum and grew from the time he spent in research for his collage of Widmark’s filmography and connections to Princeton.

Born and raised in Granville and a resident of Princeton for more than 40 years, Kassabaum had no formal art training during his time in school but always considered it a hobby. While receiving encouragement from family and some teachers, many thought he’d pursue a career as a writer.

“Not many people, except for my family, knew of my interest in drawing and art,” he said.

His connection to Richard Widmark reaches back to his childhood in Granville.

“I first saw Richard Widmark in a movie, ‘The Law and Jake Wade’ at the Gran Theater, when I was 11 years of age and have been a fan ever since. When I moved to Princeton, I heard a lot about him, and that he went to school here. I’d thought at different times I’d do some type of art concerning him. In 2013, a friend, Jim Dunn, wanted to know if I’d be interested in doing some art honoring Widmark’s 100th birthday in 2014.

He wanted to get more public awareness of the famous movie actor and that he was from Princeton. I decided to do the art and was sort of pulled

down the rabbit hole. One thing led to another,” Kassabaum said.

In 1932, Widmark graduated from Princeton High School and then attended Lake Forest College. He graduated in 1936 and remained there for two years to teach. Widmark then traveled to New York and embarked on a successful radio and stage career where he appeared on Broadway.

The year 1947 became a breakthrough year for Widmark after earning an Academy Award nomination and wide-reaching fame for his portrayal of psychopathic criminal Tommy Udo in the “Kiss of Death.”

Kassabaum said it was a challenge to complete all the research required to find just the right images to work from and to also learn everything he needed in order to complete the book.

“I think the reception of my Widmark art wasn’t too bad. I probably didn’t really make a profit with it, but I think it’s done as much as anything in reminding the public of who he was and that he was as much a Princeton boy as anyone. I know not everyone feels that way, but I think this book will have a greater effect in bringing about a renewed interest in him and his movies, both locally and across the country,” Kassabaum said.

While he never met Widmark himself, Kassabaum did get to know several of his classmates.

He has met another movie star though, Karl Malden, who happened to be good friends with Widmark. Kassabaum shares the story of their 1976 encounter in his book.

And like many fans, Kassabaum has difficulty in picking a favorite out of Widmark’s many roles, but he does know what he likes about the actor’s performances.

“I love watching for the subtle moments, when you think he’s going in one direction and just like that, he goes in another.

He has command of the screen when he’s in any role, and I have a lot of favorite performances.

Tommy Udo in ‘Kiss of Death’; Ray Biddle in ‘No Way Out’; Skip McCoy in ‘Pickup on South Street’; Harry Fabian in ‘Night and the City’; and Red Dillon in ‘When the Legends Die’ are all outstanding performances,” he said.

Kassabaum also learned how Widmark was different in his personal life as compared to some of the roles in which he was cast.

“It was night and day.

He was a private person who shunned the spotlight off the screen and was a family man who loved the outdoor life on his ranch in California and his farm in Connecticut,” he said.

While the Princeton Public Library has a Richard Widmark film collection and regularly screens them during their “Widmark Wednesdays,” Kassabaum would like to see more done.

“I’m part of the Rediscover Richard Widmark group, and we hope to have a star on the sidewalk outside of the Apollo Theater where he worked as a doorman in high school. We also hope to have a scholarship started at Princeton High School,” he explained.

Kassabaum described the experience of researching Widmark’s life, career and impact as a satisfying experience which allowed him to connect with many of the people across the country who knew Widmark and his family.

“These connections and these people are what my book is about. They were all in the big tumbler of life with the famous actor from Princeton, Illinois,” he said.

Boots vs. Badges blood drive on Aug. 23 PRINCETON — The Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center donor bus will be parked in front of the Princeton fire station on South Main Street from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

Wednesday, Aug. 23.

There will be a friendly competition in which the Princeton police and fire departments try to bring in the most blood donors while helping to save lives. Lt. Joe Welte and Chief Chuck Woolley with the Princeton Fire Department, along with Lt. Scott Underwood with the Princeton Police Department, have taken on the mission of recruiting

donors from their departments. This blood drive is open to the public, which is encouraged to come out and donate. Honor our first responders by giving blood during the Boots vs Badges blood drive.

To schedule an appointment, call the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center at 800-747-5401. Scheduling an appointment is recommended.

During the blood drive, all donors will fill out a HERO card and nominate the department they would like to credit their donation to.

The department with the most votes receives a trophy. This will be an annu-

al event with the trophy being given to the winning department. Remember, they are all winners as this will help support the patient need in the community.

Also, all presenting donors will receive a voucher for an “I Bleed” T-shirt, and all will be placed into a raffle for a chance to win a vacation package valued at $2,500.

PRINCETON — The Bureau County Health Department has presented three automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to the Bureau County Sheriff for use in squad cars on routine patrols. An AED is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electric shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm.

Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S., according to the American Heart Association which reports each year emergency medical services treat over 380,000 victims of sudden cardiac arrest. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and at any age. The Red Cross suggests an AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy to operate tool for someone with no medical background. Red Cross estimates that improved training and access to AEDs could save 50,000 lives each year.

Several years ago, grants provided law enforcement agencies, including the Bureau County Sheriff with AEDs for use in squad cars. Recognizing that police officers often arrive on scenes before ambulances or other trained med-

ical assistance and that each minute of delay in defibrillation in a sudden cardiac arrest reduces the chances of recovery by 10 percent, it makes sense to provide police with the training and equipment needed to act quickly rather than wait for medical help to arrive.

Over time, the grants have been redirected to other needs, and the costs of maintaining and replacing AEDs has caused many police agencies to lose the opportunity to provide this service.

After learning the sheriff’s office was in need of new AEDs for squad cars, the health department was able to consolidate some of its funding for emergency preparedness and response to purchase three AEDs and support materials.

Training for deputies will be provided by health department staff.

Health department administrator Diana Rawlings explained, “It is important for all of us working in preparedness and response at the local level to work together to prioritize and address the needs of the community. We are happy to be able to partner with the sheriff on this project and to give his deputies the chance to maybe save some lives in our rural areas and communities.”

“TCOC is pleased to open its monthly outreach in Walnut,” said Hoffeditz. “TCOC works to strengthen and enable lower-income families to become self-sufficient by providing access to employment and vocational training, medical services, home repair programs, scholarships and emergency services.”

LADD — The Illinois Valley River Bandits 13U Boys Baseball travel team is having tryouts for the 2018 season at noon Sunday, Aug. 13, at Kennedy Park at 900 E. Locust in Ladd. Players cannot turn 14 years old before May 1, 2018, for the 13 U team.

Practice will begin in January.

MENDOTA — The 2017 Sweet Corn Festival Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 11-13 in Mendota.

The junior division will be on Friday, Aug. 11, and the adults playing on Saturday, Aug. 12, and Sunday, Aug. 13. All matches of this year’s tourney will again be played at the Mendota High School tennis courts on the high school grounds on Route 52 north of town.

There will be a first round consolation draw, so everyone will be able to play a minimum of two matches. Juniors will now play an 8-game pro set and adults a 10-game pro set. All events are a blind draw.

The junior events are: 13-under singles (boys

and girls may play each other depending upon the number of registrants for this category); 17-under singles and doubles.

Adults are competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Adult and mixed doubles are on Aug. 12. Adult singles will be Aug. 13.

Anderson Enterprises will not be responsible for lost or stolen items. All tires, tanks, fuel barrels, and a few other items must be saleable or you will be asked to take them back home. Titles must accompany vehicles at consignment time. Some tractors will be mixed with machinery.

Trucking is available. Parking is limited to one side of the street near dealership, come early. Consignors’ checks will be ready on September 1st. ALL ITEMS MUST BE REMOVED BY September 30th.
