The 2016 Bureau County Fair Queen pageants are set for Sunday, Aug. 7, at Bureau Valley High School in Manlius. The Little Miss pageant begins at 4 p.m., and the Junior Miss Bureau County Fair Queen and Miss Bureau County Fair Queen pageants begin at approximately 5:30 p.m.

All the young ladies in each pageant will be involved in a variety of activities in which they perform before the crowd. The three girls who are selected as the queens from each age division will reign over the 161st annual Bureau County Fair.

Niel and Shorty’s offers barbecue variety

PRINCETON — In the sweet and spicy world of succulent smoked barbecue, there are two rules to live by … do it well, and do it consistently.

Shawn Nichols’ father-in-law knew a fellow in the Kansas City Barbecue Society circuit who ran the Illinois state barbecue competition for a quarter century, and Nichols learned most everything he needed to know from this man. After a decade of competitive barbecuing, Nichols was ready to bring the mouth-watering flavors home.

Nichols opened Niel and Shorty’s BBQ in early June on South Main Street in Princeton. He said working with a smoker is rewarding because the perfect combination of spices and ingredients must rotate patiently for 10 hours before it hits the plates. It’s a great cooking technique that people don’t know a lot about, he said, and once you get to where you don’t have to write down times or recipes anymore, you’re hooked.

“The camaraderie in the barbecue circuit is really neat; everybody gets along and learns from everybody else, and it’s a great group of people always willing to help you out,” Nichols said, having perfected his craft for two decades. “You start with what you like to eat and arrive at what you hope is good, and evidently there are some folks who think it’s good enough to come try.”

Nichols and his wife, Maura, were out at the country club golf course for a few years while they finished the building in Princeton. The landlord provided all the materials, and with Nichols’ efforts, everything really fell into place.

“We serve the top four things you would cook in competition — brisket, ribs, chicken and pulled pork — and aside from that, you can stem off into turkey,

chicken wings and chicken breast,” Nichols said, adding a barbecue chef is always dabbling, and they are looking at fish as an option down the road. “We’re trying not to offer so much that we do it OK, but offering our menu and doing it well.”

Nichols can be found in the kitchen at Niel and Shorty’s, and he said the tasty menu, the fresh intrigue and the outdoor seating keep people coming through the door, while taste buds that celebrate the sizzling flavors keep them coming back for more.

“The volume has been wonderful, and the support is excellent,” he said, calling himself a hands-on owner. “That makes my hand-shaking a lot easier when I’m confident about what’s going on.”

Nichols has already run out of product a few times, but that is a double-edged sword; it means sales are great, but he doesn’t dare pull a rack of ribs out of the smoker early. The few issues they’ve experienced have been handled by the great and personable staff members who have fun working hard because “being rude doesn’t help anybody.” Every little piece of pulled pork ... and every little piece of advice helps in constantly renovating and adapting the business.

“I’m not looking to get rich; I just want to make a living in the town I grew up in,” Nichols said, steering Main Street back to where it used to be. “It’s about not fleecing you because there’s enough of that going on in our country. I just want you to leave thinking that was worth what I paid for it.”

Niel and Shorty’s BBQ — located at 646 S. Main St. in Princeton — is open Wednesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for lunch. After closing from 2 to 4 p.m. to prepare, they serve dinner from 4 to 9 p.m., with ribs starting at 6 p.m. The business only accepts cash or checks for payment.

Couple opens Rodeo Tacos

PRINCETON — Thomas Aguilera and his wife, Norma Payan, have recently opened Rodeo Tacos in Princeton at 1007 N. Main St. The couple first operated a taco truck business four years ago serving authentic Mexican food.

They started with tacos, quesadillas and tortas the first year, added burritos the second year and walking tacos (salad) the third year.

“We were looking for a local building to put a restaurant in the LaSalle-Peru area,” he said through an interpreter, a waitress at the restaurant that opened for business July 5.

Since those towns have a lot of same kind of businesses there as Rodeo

Tacos, the couple started looking in Princeton after Pedro Monzon, a local dentist, invited them to look at Princeton.

“We found this available spot,” he said.

“We serve fresh food and plan on adding more Mexican items like fajitas and moles.”

The restaurant’s menu listed Mexicanand American-style tacos, seafood, traditional and rodeo-style burritos, tortas, and quesadillas. It also has appetizers, nachos, salads and a children’s menu.

Rodeo Tacos has daily specials and currently only serves soft drinks in cans or bottles.

Rodeo Tacos is open for business from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

Manlius Fun Day set for Aug. 6 MANLIUS — Ready for some weekend fun? Head on over to Manlius for a full day of fun on Saturday, Aug. 6.

Manlius Fun Day activities kick off early Saturday morning. At 9 a.m., you’ll want to head to the Manlius First State Bank and Museum for a tour. There will also be a 50/50 raffle.

Guest speakers include Joe Johnson and Carol McGee. There will be an awards presentation at 11:45 a.m.

Hungry? Head to the Manlius Sportsman’s Club for a fish fry at 10 a.m.

Beulah’s Tap will be serving BBQ beef sandwiches all day, and the 4-H Food Stand opens at noon. Food will also be available at the Brickhouse.

There’s a Pow Wow in Tiskilwa Annual event is Aug. 4-7

TISKILWA — The Gem of the Valley — aka Tiskilwa — is gearing up for another Pow Wow, set for Aug. 4-7. The annual Pow Wow Days event promises a host of activities for people of all ages.

Thursday, Aug. 4

The fun gets started on Thursday, which is deemed a free entertainment night.

The Lil’ Spurs Rodeo Queen Pageant in the rodeo arena begins at 6 p.m., and the Tiskilwa Community Association (TCA) will sponsor an ice cream eating contest at 6:30 p.m. and kids’ pedal tractor pull for ages 4 to 12 at 7:30 p.m. From 7 to 10 p.m., The Generics will wow the Pow Wow Days crowd with music and dancing for all ages. Throughout the evening, the Girl Scouts will host a pop and water stand, and the TCA Beer Garden will open with free admission.

Friday, Aug. 5

On Friday, bring the kids out to enjoy and participate in the 15th annual Lil’ Spurs Rodeo, which will be held at the West Park Rodeo Arena at 6 p.m. Earlier in the day, the Tiskilwa Historical Society’s Museum on Main will be open from noon to 4 p.m.

There will be plenty to eat

and drink as well: The Princeton High School cheerleaders will open their food stand serving pork chops, hot dogs and chips; the Girls Scouts will be selling pop and water; and the TCA Beer Garden will open at 5 p.m. and operate until 1 a.m., where event-goers can see Happy Nez, Jim Van Fleet and the Packrat Machine, and Tim Hamilton.

Saturday, Aug. 6

Eat your Wheaties Saturday morning because the Pow Wow really gets going again with a myriad of funfilled events. The day begins with the Pow Wow Days 5K Run at East Park. Call 815646-4624 for more information.

This Tiskilwa Historical Society gears up for a big day with its Museum on Main open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The society will also offer coloring book relaxation from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and a Classic Rides display on the museum’s west lawn from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The annual Pow Wow Days parade steps off on Main Street at 10:30 a.m.

Immediately following the parade, a variety of activities begin at 11 a.m.: Crossroads School Open House at the former grade school building runs until 12:30 p.m.; the Tiskilwa Community Church’s rug sale and luncheon at the Community Church is open until 1 p.m.; the Boy Scouts Troop 1068 will have a lunch stand until 2 p.m., and the Girl Scouts

will again open their pop/ water stand and stay open until 11 p.m.; Furry Friends Petting Zoo will be open until 2 p.m.; Colonel Klink’s Inflatables will operate until 4 p.m. ($10 all-day armbands); Laurence Johnson’s Backyard Train Ride chugs through town until 4 p.m.; and the TCA Beer Garden opens its doors and will continue through the day until 1 a.m.

Bean Bag enthusiasts can try their hand at the Bean Bag tournament (two-man teams) at 11:30 a.m. Sign up is at 10 a.m. in the beer garden.

Taking the village back to its Native American roots, make sure you plan your schedule to attend the Native American program from noon to 2 p.m.

A Tiskilwa High School alumni banquet at A Hundred Acres Orchard in Princeton is at 5 p.m. and costs $25 per person.

Evening entertainment includes DJ Mindee Beth Karaoke from 5 to 8 p.m., and Music Masters DJ Entertainment for music and dancing in the beer garden from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Walnut fundraiser to benefit St. Jude’s

WALNUT — Multiple events are being planned for a fundraiser which will benefit St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in their ongoing efforts to find a cure for childhood cancer.

Sponsored by Cora’s Crew and St. Jude Ride, the event is set for Saturday, Aug. 6, at Green River Country Club, 15212 Illinois Route 92 in Walnut.

A best ball golf scramble begins at 2 p.m. The fee for the golf outing is $25 per person. Contact Chad Pistole at 815-878-5932 with questions. Space is limited, so sign up early.

The golf scramble will be followed by dinner from 5 to 7 p.m.; dinner includes pulled pork/beef hot dogs and all the fixings. There is no cost for dinner, however, donations are greatly appreciated.

Immediately following dinner at 7 p.m., a trivia night will be held. The cost is $100 per team (up to 10 people). Space is also limited for the trivia night, so those interested are urged to sign up early.

There will also be a 50/50 raffle and a silent auction throughout the event.

Annual Princeton Buddy Bags drawdown is set for Aug. 13 PRINCETON — Princeton Buddy Bags will hold its annual drawdown fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 13, at The Kompany Down Under on South Main in Princeton.

Tickets are $40 and can be purchased from any board member. Doors will open at 5 p.m. A ticket includes dinner for two from 6 to 7 p.m. The meal will be catered

by Kramer’s Kitchen. Children under 5 eat free, and children ages 6 to 15 eat for an additional $6 each.

The event will include many auction items and prizes. Only 200 tickets will be sold, with a chance to win $750, $500,

Avenue. The theme for this year is “Rockin’ in the U.S.A.� Call 815-2134877 to register.

At noon, there will be children’s activities at Mullin Park.

A rolle bolle tournament (mixed draw) starts at 1 p.m., and bean bags at the Brickhouse starts at 3 p.m.

Buddy Bags is a 501(c)3 non-profit collaborative project between the Princeton Elementary School Districts, the Malden School District, St. Louis School, the Christian Academy and other area organizations, churches and volunteers. They are working to address childhood hunger by providing food to at-risk children on days when school is not in session. Many area children go hungry on weekends during the school year.

Monday, Aug. 8, 6:30 p.m., Monday Movies: This is the “prequel” of a classic space movie series. This film involves a vengeful alien who travels back in time trying to destroy one planet at a time.

The Princeton Public Library is once again planning an author fair on Oct. 22. Last year, more than 30 local authors attended with books to sell, sign and dis-

cuss. This year, the library is looking for published authors to join the second annual author fair. Applications can be received by emailing landerson@princetonpl.org or can be pickedup at the library. This is a free event, but authors must reserve their spot by filling out an application.

LAMOILLE — Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday, which is an ongoing program. Come and go between 1 and 4 p.m.

Materials will be furnished, or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books

have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students.

The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — Prizes from the

annual reading program can be picked-up now through Aug. 13.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 2016-17 fiscal year.

The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017.

All board meetings are open to the public.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged men-

tally and physically.

WALNUT — The library will host its Read – For the Win summer reading program until Aug. 10. Participants meet every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The library hosts a range of free activities for children that encourages and supports a love of reading.

Participants will notice a new format for the program this year in the form of bingo cards to track their progress. Kids will be given special bingo cards with reading challenges, such as “read a book with a blue cover” or “build a blanket fort and read a book” just to try to switch things up and try something new.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services. Call 815-659-3283 for information. (The fax number is the same as the phone number).

LADD —The library is sponsoring its new Perpetual Programs. These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library anytime a patron stops in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

The library is also sponsoring an adult summer reading program this year.

Pickup a passport to fun at the library.

The library also sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The library is happy to be offering basket weaving classes. Each class lasts three hours and features a different style of basket. Sign-up for one or sign up for them all. Each class costs $15 and must be paid for at the time of registration.

Registration sheets are available at the circulation desk. The dates and projects are as follows: Aug. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m., cone; and Aug. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. tissue box.

Coloring one’s world ...

PRINCETON — Several adults are picking up the crayons to help relieve stress these days.

Whether it be tension from the everyday grind or chronic strain over a serious traumatic event in one’s life — adult coloring is becoming a more favored way to help release steam.

The trend has proven to be so beneficial that many psychiatrists are even prescribing the activity to their patients. It’s been said coloring takes adults back to a more simple time when they didn’t have as many responsibilities, and it was an activity done for pure joy.

Walk into any big retailer story or craft shop and most likely there will be a rack filled with all different kinds of themed adult coloring books. The pages offer a more difficult skill in coloring compared to children’s coloring books, however nonetheless, they offer the same entertain-

ing, creative outlet.

Many local libraries have caught on to this fad and are now providing adult coloring therapy sessions for their patrons.

At the LaMoille-Clarion Public Library, Director Joyce Sondgeroth hosts Therapy Thursdays from 1 to 4 p.m. During this time, patrons can go to the library, where all kinds of coloring materials are provided to anyone who wishes to kick back and relax.

The session gets patrons out of their homes and gives them the opportunity to sit and chat with neighbors or just enjoy a peaceful afternoon at the library.

Sondgeroth got the idea earlier in the year while searching for new programs to provide at the library. She said while online, she noticed several options for coloring books and realized how big the trend had grown. After reading about the benefits, she decided to offer the therapy session to patrons.

She said many have caught on to the program.

Sometimes there is a group of people who show up, and sometimes no one attends the sessions. Sondgeroth said no matter how big or small the group is, the option is always there for anyone who needs the time to decompress after a long day.

Karen Carlson, LaMoille’s library aide, is one who nabbed onto the trend.

She purchased a coloring book this past winter and decided to try it out. She said it was a great way to pass time and keep her mind busy on those long, cold evenings.

Carlson said she always colored growing up and continued to do it with her children and grandchildren. She said it was a great activity to do while spending time with the children and helped fulfill her creative outlet.

When thinking about the benefits of coloring, Carlson said because of the way it keeps the mind busy and helps with focus and concentration, she believes people who like jigsaw or Sudoku puzzle

would also enjoy picking up a coloring book.

At the Ladd Public Library, Director Amy Galetti-Bosi is trying to start-up an adult coloring club in her area, as well. Right now, she has

established hours for when patrons can go to the library and try out the coloring sessions. The club meets from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Saturdays and from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Bosi said while the club

is new and patrons are still catching on to the idea, she would love to see more patrons attend the sessions. She said the library is trying out different clubs to attract more people to the library.

Fastpitch Church League PRINCETON — The Princeton Fastpitch Church League Tournament is underway at West Side Park with games resuming Friday, Aug. 5.The tournament runs through Saturday, Aug. 13.

Tampico tournament

TAMPICO — The fourth annual double-elimination men’s slowpitch tourney in Tampico will be Saturday, Aug. 20.

This is primarily a men’s tournament, but women are allowed to play also.

Players must be at least 16 years of age to play, but 16 and 17 year olds need parental consent.

There will be a 10-team limit. If there is more interest generated, it could be moved to a two-day tournament.

Cost is $125 per team. There is a payout for Top 3 teams. To keep entry fees down, teams will be required to supply an umpire for the following game depending on where they are in the bracket after first round. Placing games will have umpires provided.

The tournament is a fundraiser to support the Tampico ball diamonds.

WALNUT — Registration is still open for the Perry Memorial Auxiliary MudCross Challenge. The event is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 13, at Sunset Ridge MX in Walnut.

This challenge is a three-to-four mile muddy obstacle course where participants run, walk, climb, crawl and slide their way through to the finish line.

There is also a “Fun Run” for children, ages 5-12.

MENDOTA — The 69th annual Sweet Corn Festival will be held Aug. 11-14, sponsored at Mendota High School.

The competition will be a first-round consolation draw to allow everyone a minimum of two matches. Juniors will now play an eight-game pro set and adults a 10-game pro set. All events are a blind draw.

The junior events for boys and girls 13-under singles and 17-under singles and doubles will be played Friday, Aug. 12.

Adults will be competing in singles, doubles and mixed doubles Saturday, Aug. 13, and singles play Sunday, Aug 14.
