Reddick Mansion’s Gardens receive recognition OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association (RMA) has received several certifications for its gardens. The Gardens at the Reddick Mansion have been recognized as a certified wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation (NWF) and have been named a certified monarch watch stop by the Monarch Watch, an education outreach program based at the University of Kansas.

The Reddick Mansion Gardens also include the only certified herb garden in LaSalle County and were recently awarded a Golden Trowel by the Ottawa in Bloom Committee.

The NWF certification recognizes the efforts of the Reddick Mansion Association to create a garden space which improves habitat for birds, butterflies and other wildlife by providing essential elements — natural food sources, clean water, cover and places to raise young.

According to Dave Mizejewski, naturalist with the National Wildlife Federation, “Providing a home for wildlife in our communities is the demonstration of a healthy and active eco-system.

There is no more rewarding way to stay connected to nature right outside your door.”

The Reddick Mansion Association gardens have been recognized as a certified wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation and have been named a certified monarch watch stop by the Monarch Watch. of volunteers to provide more than 20 varieties of plants specifically for butterflies including milkweed, purple cone flowers, catmint, honeysuckle and bee balm. “We must be doing it right”, said Barta, “because last week I saw Monarch butterflies in the Gardens as well as a Monarch chrysalis.”

Diane Sanders, president of the Reddick Mansion Association, said, “Nancy and the gardening volunteers have been working extremely hard this year. We were

all very happy with how our grounds looked during the recent visit by the judges from ‘America in Bloom.’ The judges were especially interested in our herb garden and our quilt garden. ” The idea of the quilt garden was suggested

by RMA board member Hedy Bernholdt, who had seen several in the Amish countryside of Indiana. The pattern of the quilt was designed and laid out with string and stakes with the help of Mike Barta, Nancy’s husband, in the raised

flowerbed on the east side of the Mansion.

The RMA invites people to stroll through the gardens and enjoy the lush plants, beautiful flowers, and active wildlife. The Gardens and the Mansion itself are available for rent for private events such as weddings, meetings and parties. Downtown Sound closes out summer with music CHICAGO — Downtown Sound, Millennium Park’s popular Monday night music series, makes its return beginning on June 2 at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion. The series will continue on consecutive Monday evenings until Aug. 11. The series offers an eclectic mix of indie rock music and pop.

This year, the city of Chicago will mark Millennium Park’s 10th Anniversary until Sept. 1. Join the city for a summer-long celebration featuring Downtown Sound, Loops and Variations and Made in Chicago music series, film series, workouts and much more.

Maps & Atlases will headline the evening at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 4. They are a Chicago rock band who defies easy categorization.

Their experimental and traditional song-forms collide with hymnal harmonies, percolating rhythms and maximalist creativity, resulting in boundary-busting, asymmetrical pop. Wooden Shjips, recording on Chicago’s Thrill Jockey label, transform heavy psychedelic rock into minimalist masterpieces. They will open the evening.

At 6:30 p.m. Aug. 11, Chicago’s Russian Circles bring their soaring, triumphant instrumental metal

to the Pritzker Pavilion headlining the evening and showcasing their 2013 release Memorial. Opening is Colin Stetson, who spent the last two years playing saxophone with Bon Iver.

Here he performs works from his 2013 solo album, “New History Warfare Volume 3: To See More Light,” using a stunning circular breathing technique and unprecedented approach to the instrument to create dense cascading layers of sound.

Stage 212 presents ‘Rent’ LASALLE — Stage 212 has the announced the cast for “Rent,” the edgy Tony Award-winning musical by Jonathan Larson. “Rent” tells the story of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York City’s East Village, under the shadow of HIV/AIDS. Stage 212 is presenting “Rent” as a special production outside their regular season to raise funds to equip the front of the theater building with higher efficiency doors and windows.

Included in the cast are Kevin Alleman as Mark, Joey Beavers as Angel, A.J. Botero as Benny, Natalie Hrovat as Maureen, Casey Kasprowicz as Joanne, Sophie Smigel as Mimi, Andrew Strickler as Collins and Sean Walshas Roger.

Featured in the company are Leslie Crum, Jacob Damron, Clarissa Gerrard, Ashley Hurst, Ashley Keegan, Yvette Lucas, Sara Mason, Matt Nowakows-

Reagan Trail Days offers a week of fun DIXON — The annual Reagan Trail Days will be held Aug. 3-10 in Dixon.

The week includes a performance by Lyle Lovett, the 144th National Guard Band and a special John Deere showcase Aug. 9-10 in downtown Dixon.

The week’s schedules is: Aug. 3 — Dirt Simple will perform at 4:30 p.m. Olivia Dvorak and band will perform at 6:45 p.m. Danika Holmes will perform at 9 p.m. Gates open at 4 p.m.

Aug. 6 — The Dixon City Market will be open from 4 to 7 p.m. on the Riverfront.

It showcases a focused list of premier, local and specialty food vendors. There will be live music, craft beer and wine tastings, kids activities and face painting.

Aug. 7 — Family Night on the Riverfront. There will be free Culver’s ice cream and Jelly Belly jelly beans, while supplies last, at 7 p.m. “The Lego Movie” will be shown at 8 p.m. There will be a community picnic at Lowell Park from 5 to 8 p.m.

Mama Cimino will be doing the cooking. Dinner donation is $3 for adults and kids

under 18 years old eat free, while supplies last.

Aug. 8 — The 144th National Guard Band will play a concert from 6:30 to 8 p.m. followed by a performance by the Dixon Municipal Band from 8 to 9:30 p.m. on the Riverfront.

Aug. 9 — The Alzheimer’s Association annual Great Duck Race will be held at 10 a.m. on the Riverfront. The winning duck gets $1,000.

Ducks are 2 for $5, 12 for $25 or 50 for $100. Ducks are available in advance at the Alzheimer’s Association, 93 S. Hennepin Ave. The Old Settlers’ Log Cabin will be open for tours from 12 to 3 p.m. by the Lee County Genealogy Society.

This week The Hegeler Carus Mansion Summer Sunset Concert Series presents Henry Torpedo Boys at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1, on the west lawn. Mansion grounds will open at 5:30 p.m. for picnics. Admission to the grounds is $5.

High school students are free by showing a valid student ID from any local high school.

The 2014 Granville annual Cruise Night will begin at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 1.

MENDOTA — Mendota’s Sweet Corn Festival will go to the kids on Aug. 8 for Kids’ Day. Join the fun provided

by Illinois Valley Rides and Games. The Sweet Corn Festival’s carnival will have a variety of rides for all ages. It is kids day where kids young and old can ride as much and as many rides as they want from noon to 4 p.m. with the purchase of a $20 armband.

There will be more than 23 rides. In addition to the carnival rides, Cory Leonard, magician and speaker, will perform.

Merritt Funeral Home is bringing the illusionist to this year’s festival. He will be strolling and performing his comedy magic and close-up illusions from noon to 2 p.m.

Leonard brings more than 29 years of experience providing quality entertainment and creating memories. He began doing his shows while in the Navy. While out at sea with a crew of more than 7,000 aboard the U.S.S. America CV66, he honed his craft, entertaining with his comical, closeup magic boosting morale in the process. In the early

1990s he returned to central Illinois and has been entertaining kids and adults.

Billy the Balloon Guy of Rockford will be at the festival courtesy of Schimmer Inc. He will be twisting creations to give to onlookers at the corner of Illinois Avenue and Jefferson Street from 1 to 5 p.m. He can create small animals, flower and the like or elaborate balloon bouquets, bags of golf clubs and even bi-planes.

Festival parade to entertain all MENDOTA — The Mendota Sweet Corn Festival Parade will be held Aug. 10. It will step off at 1 p.m. In addition to local parade entries, the parade will feature a variety of new and returning entertainment.

The 144th Army Band, Illinois Army National Guard, will be part of this year’s parade. The band is stationed at Camp Lincoln in Springfield.

The members of the 144th Army Band meet one weekend each month for rehearsals and performances, and spend an additional 15 days throughout the year supporting military and civilian events as part of their annual training. As the musical representatives of the Illinois Army National Guard, the 144th Army Band performs regularly for audiences throughout Illinois.

While their mission as a U.S. Army band is multifaceted, their main duties revolve around music.

They work to promote readiness by performing music that raises troop morale and promotes esprit de corps. The band provides music for troop gatherings and activities, military and religious ceremonies, and civic affairs.

The band is made up of 38 citizen-soldiers from

all over the state of Illinois and the surrounding area.

Many of the members are students, music teachers, or are otherwise associated with the music field in their civilian pursuits.

Chicago’s Golden Knights Drill Team will again be part of the parade. They will be amazing parade goers with their electrifying moves, as they perform drills and dance moves to pop, hip hop and techno beats.

The Golden Knights are sponsored by Mendota’s Black Bros. Co., Pepsi Beverages Company of Aurora and Prescott Brothers Inc. of Mendota.

The Knights will not only perform in the parade, but do a post-parade performance in front of the Mendota Elks Club on Indiana Avenue at 3:30 p.m.

The Golden Knights Drill Team was founded seven years ago as an after-school alternative to the typical sports choices. Today they are a not-for-profit performing arts organization that is focused on developing the youth of their community. Their mission is to teach youth the principals of discipline, leadership and charity through performing arts and community service. The Knights

are dedicated in assisting youth in evolving and growing into responsible adults that will desire to take the time and dedication to return the support to the youth that come up behind them.

New to the line-up of entertainment this year will be the New Generation Fancy Drill Team.

New Generation will perform during the parade on Aug. 10 and will also put on a post-parade performance at 3 p.m. in front of the Mendota Elks Lodge on Indiana Avenue downtown.

This Chicagoland Drill Team was organized in 2000 to provide a nontraditional, recreational, physical fitness, educational and cultural enrichment experience for public housing and inner city youth from five “high risk” communities.

The group has won five Midwest Regional Championships and six North Suburban Regional Championships. They have participated in many parades, including the Lombard Lilac Festival Parade and the Bud Billiken Day Parade in Chicago.

Final Festival 56 cabaret is Aug. 3 PRINCETON — Festival 56 will wrap up its 2014 season Aug. 3 with an afternoon performance of the Stephen Sondheim musical, “Into the Woods,” and an early evening of cabaret at the Grace Center for Performing Arts, 316 S. Main St., Princeton.

The final performance of “Into the Woods” will be at 2 p.m. The last of the festival’s summer cabarets starts at 7:30 p.m., with this season’s departing cast performing songs, dance and comedy. This farewell cabaret will also feature a silent auction, including signed posters and other memorabilia from the 2014 season.

Monday, Aug. 4, the high school book club will discuss “The Tipping Point” by Malcolm Gladwell at 1 p.m. Also Monday, the Children’s Matinee Movie will begin at 4:30 p.m. and feature two orphaned royal sisters from a northern kingdom who must confront their destinies and own relationship as the older contends with a mighty secret—the power to create ice and snow, while the younger, a fearless optimist, isolated by her sister’s secret, tries to save her sister and navigate her own path toward romance.

The Monday Night Movie begins at 6:30 p.m. and will feature two misunderstood 12 year olds who fall in love, make a secret pact and run away together into the wilderness on an island off the coast of New England in the summer of 1965. As various authorities try to find them, a violent storm is brewing offshore, and the peaceful island community has more than it can handle.

SPRING VALLEY — Are you ready to see alligators, snakes, lizards and a tortoise? If so, the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library is having Jim Nesci, an experienced expert in the reptile industry at 4 p.m. Aug. 6 in Kirby Park, Spring Valley.

Jim has owned and worked with reptiles his entire life, starting as a young boy, fascinated with dinosaurs. During his presentation, he will address the relationship between reptiles and dinosaurs.

Children and adults will be treated to many unknown facts about this misunderstood group of creatures. He also has many humorous stories to relate about his adventures with his reptiles. Respect and safety for the animals and participants takes front stage during all of Jim’s reptile programs.

Bubba the alligator is over 8 feet long and weighs over 200 pounds; Big Al the tortoise is 23 years old and weighs in at 250 pounds; and Blondie the python is a popular part of the audience participation because Jim lines up people from the audience, who are thrilled to hold her.

This is a free, one of a kind, hands-on experience for all ages. If there are concerns about the weather on that day for his presentation, the show will be in the community room of Spring Valley City Hall.

TISKILWA — Tuesday, Aug. 5, the library will host a story hour for all ages from 2 to 3 p.m.

Pineapple Sunrise Smoothies

What a more wonderful way to cool off than to whip up a smoothie with some of your favorite ingredients. I hope you enjoy these summertime treats.

Cappuccino Smoothies 1 cup (8 ounces) cappuccino or coffee yogurt 1/3 cup milk 3 tablespoons confectioner’s sugar 1 tablespoon chocolate syrup 1 1/2 cups ice cubes 1/2 cup miniature marshmallows, divided In a blender, combine the yogurt, milk, sugar and chocolate syrup. Add ice cubes and 1/4 cup marshmallows, cover and process until blended. Pour into chilled glasses. Top with the remaining marshmallows. Serve immediately. Serves 3.

Chocolate Banana Smoothies 2 cups cold 2 % milk 1 1.4-ounce package sugar-free instant chocolate pudding mix 2 tablespoons vanilla extract 2 large ripe frozen bananas, sliced 2 cups coarsely crushed ice cubes In a blender, combine the milk, pudding mix and vanilla. Cover and process until blended. Add the bananas and ice. Cover and process until smooth. Pour into chilled glasses, serve immediately. Serves 4.

Watermelon Smoothies

Golden Smoothies

6 cups coarsely chopped seedless watermelon 1 cup lemon sherbet 1/2 cup ice cubes Place half of the watermelon in a blender, cover and process until smooth.

Add half of the sherbet and ice. Cover and process until smooth. Repeat. Serve immediately in chilled glasses. Serves 6.

1 1/2 cups orange juice 1 8-ounce carton peach yogurt 1 5 1/2-ounce can apricot nectar 1 teaspoon honey Orange slices and maraschino cherries Place the first four ingredients in a blender, cover and process until smooth.

Pour into chilled glasses, garnish with oranges and cherries. Makes 3 cups.

Sweet Fruit Smoothies

Peach Strawberry Smoothie 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries 1 cup fresh or frozen unsweetened sliced peaches 1 cup plain or vanilla yogurt 1 to 2 tablespoons sugar Dash of ground cinnamon Set aside a few strawberry slices for garnish. Place the remaining berries in a blender; add peaches, yogurt and sugar. Cover and process until smooth. Pour into chilled glasses, sprinkle with cinnamon. Garnish with the reserved strawberries. Serves 2.

1 14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk 1 8-ounce carton strawberry yogurt 2 tablespoons lemon juice 1 8-ounce can crushed pineapple, undrained 1 medium ripe banana, sliced 1 cup halved fresh strawberries 1 cup crushed ice In batches, process the milk, yogurt, lemon juice and fruit in a blender or food processor until smooth. Add ice, cover and process until smooth. Pour into glasses, serve immediately. Serves 5.

1 14-ounce can unsweetened pineapple tidbits 1 small ripe banana, sliced 3/4 cup fresh or frozen raspberries 2 tablespoons sugar 2 ice cubes Drain pineapple, reserving juice and 1 cup pineapple (refrigerate, remaining pineapple for another use). In a blender, combine the pineapple juice, pineapple, banana, raspberries, sugar and ice. Cover and process until smooth. Stir if necessary. Pour into chilled glasses, serve immediately. Serves 2.

PERU — The 5K Race to benefit the Peru Recreation Summer Programs will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 with check-in held at 7 a.m. at Parkside School in Peru. Entry fee is $20 before Aug. 18 and $25 on day of races.

Gateway 5K

PRINCETON — Gateway Services will hold its first Gateway 5K on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m., starting at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. This 5K is for awareness of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The theme this year is Superhero Showdown.

Runners can choose to dress up as a superhero of their choice. There will be “villains” along the course with squirt phasers cooling the runners off as they move along the course.

The Gateway 5K Superhero Showdown will start and finish at the Bureau County Fair-

grounds. Runners and volunteers will be able to park there and registration will be in the main building. Cost to enter the Gateway 5K is $20.

After Aug. 15 it will be $35. All proceeds will go towards the programs Gateway Services provides.

Sweet Corn Festival Tournament MENDOTA — The 67th annual Sweet Corn Festival will be held Aug. 8-10. The tournament will offer Junior and Adult divisions, with the Juniors playing on Aug. 8 and adults playing on Aug. 9-10.

All matches of this year’s tourney will again be played at the Mendota High School tennis courts on the high school grounds on Route 52 north of town.

Entry forms may be picked up at the Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce office and Sports-N-Stuff in Mendota. They may also be obtained at sweetcornfestival.com or mendotahospital.org or by sending a SASE to Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce, PO BOX 620, Mendota IL 61342.

Turkey Shoot PRINCETON — The Joe Meyer Park Turkey Shoot will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 2. It is open to the public and chaperoned youth are welcome. You may bring your shotgun and .22 rifle; shells will be provided. There will be turkey, ham and money boards available along with concessions and raffles. Mendota bags tourney MENDOTA — The very popular sport of “Bags” will be part of this year’s 67th Celebration of Corn in Mendota.

The competition is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 9 and is being sponsored by Relay for Life of Upper Illinois Valley Relay for Life.

Entry fees are $40 per 2-person team with 50 percent of the entry fees paid out. The remaining 50 percent goes to the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Payouts based on the number of teams entered.
