Cruise to Granville for annual car show Get your motor running and head over to Granville for its annual Cruise In car show at 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 7, in downtown Granville. The event is great for car enthusiasts as well as families. It will include activities for children, with a petting zoo and The Balloon Man scheduled to make an appearance. The Putnam County Panteras will perform, and there will be a street dance with music provided by Darryl, Hall and Soen Oats, a band comprised of Darryl Bouxsein, Tom Hall, Rick Soens and Todd Witek. Music, reading combine at library The Logan Junior High School Band performed at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 23, at the Princeton Public Library. They performed songs by Victor Lopez, Gustav Holst and John Williams. The music followed an afternoon of Kitchen Band playtime and rounds up the library’s Summer Reading theme of Reading to the Rhythm. to troops serving overseas. TISKILWA — The Tiskilwa Public Library has kicked-off its summer reading program for tweens, from fifth to eighth grades. Readers meet on Tuesdays. Grill will open at 11 a.m. The Illinois Valley Hospice will host a “My Treasure Chest” workshop for children who have experience the death of a loved one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital Sixth Street office building in Peru. Children will listen to stories, design their own treasure chest, sing songs and fill out a workbook to remember their loved one. The workshop is for children age 5-14. Materials and lunch will be provided. Children are asked to bring a picture of a loved on or any small keepsake that reminds them of their loved one. Favorites returning to this year’s Mendota Sweet Corn Festival Here are some simple recipes, with a few ingredients. Some of these are perfect for using fresh produce out of your garden or from one of our wonderful farmers’ markets in the area.
Stuffed Cucumber Slices 3 cucumber, peeled 2 3-ounce packages cream cheese, softened 1/4 cup stuffed green olives, chopped 1/2 teaspoon seasoned salt Halve cucumbers lengthwise and scoop out seeds. Beat cream cheese in bowl until creamy and add olives and seasoned salt. Fill hollows of cucumbers with cream cheese mixture. Press halves back together, wrap tightly in plastic wrap and refrigerate. Remove plastic wrap and cut crosswise in 1/2-inch slices to serve. Serves 6.
Jiffy Chicken 8 boneless skinless chicken breast halves 3/4 cup mayonnaise 2 cups crushed corn flakes 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese Preheat oven to 325°. Sprinkle breasts with a little salt and pepper. Dip chicken in mayonnaise and spread over chicken with brush. Combine corn flakes crumbs and cheese in bowl and dip chicken in corn flake mixture until it coats completely. Place chicken in sprayed 9-by-13inch glass baking dish and bake, uncovered, for 1 hour. Serves 8.
Smothered Beef Patties 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1/2 cup chili sauce 1/2 cup round, buttery cracker crumbs 1 14-ounce can beef broth Combine beef, chili sauce and cracker crumbs in bowl and form into 5 to 6 patties. Brown patties in skillet; pour beef broth over patties and bring to a boil. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 50 minutes. Serves 5 to 6.
Potato Beef Bake 1 pound ground beef 1 10-ounce can Sloppy Joe sauce 1 10-ounce can fiesta nacho cheese soup 1 32-ounce package frozen hash brown potatoes, thawed Preheat oven to 400°. Cook beef in skillet over medium heat until no longer pink, and drain. Add Sloppy Joe sauce and cheese soup to beef and mix well. Place hash browns in sprayed 9-by-13inch baking dish and top with beef mixture. Cover and bake for 25 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 10 minutes. Serves 6 to 8.

Smothered Steak 1 2-pound round steak 1 10-ounce can golden mushroom soup 1 1-ounce packet onion soup mix 2/3 cup milk Preheat oven to 325°. Cut steak into serving-size pieces and place in sprayed 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Combine mushroom soup, soup mix and milk in saucepan. Heat just enough to mix well and pour over steak. Cover and bake for 1 hour. Serves 6 to 8.
Fantastic Fried Corn 2 16-ounce packages frozen whole kernel corn 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter 1 cup whipping cream 1 tablespoon sugar Place corn in large skillet over medium heat and add butter, whipping cream, sugar and 1 teaspoon salt. Stir constantly and heat until most of whipping cream and butter absorbs into corn. Serves 4 to 6.
Baked Eggplant 1 medium eggplant 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) butter, melted 1 5-ounce can evaporated milk 1 1/2 cups cracker crumbs Preheat oven to 350°. Peel, slice and boil eggplant in saucepan until easily mashed and drain. Season with a little salt and pepper and add butter, evaporated milk and crumbs. Pour into sprayed 2-quart baking dish and bake for 25 minutes. Serves 4 to 6.
MENDOTA — Whether you are young or just young at heart you will enjoy some past favorites that are returning to entertain at this year’s Mendota’s Sweet Corn Festival to be held Aug. 6-9. Professional Magician Cory Leonard is sure to dazzle audiences with his comedy magic and closeup illusions. Magic by Cory will be performing feats of magic as he strolls the midways from noon to 2 p.m. Friday of Festival weekend. This quality award winning magician is being brought to the Festival by Merritt Funeral Home of Mendota. Also on Friday of the Fest, visitors will be able to enjoy some of the talents of veteran balloon twister Billy Pirrello of Rockford. Billy the Balloon Guy as he is known will be twisting his unique creations for festival goers free of charge thanks to the generosity of Schimmer Inc. of Mendota. You will find him on the corner of Illinois Avenue and Jefferson Street from 1 to 5 p.m. Billy can create the ordinary: dogs, bunnies, etc., but he can also conjure up baskets of fruit, tractors, golf bags full clubs and vases full of flowers. Billy performs at many special
events, schools, museums and company picnics. FacePainting by EngleArt of metropolitan Chicago will be another of the returning fun events on Saturday, Aug. 8. Advanced Drainage Systems and Prairie Land Millwright Inc. of Mendota are generously bringing these very talented artists to Mendota to create their masterpieces free of charge for festival goers from noon to 3 p.m. at the corner of Washington Street and Indiana Avenue. EngleArt will transform you into your favorite animal, super hero or create a colorful and beautiful design on your little one’s face. Tom Engel’s unusual craft has been featured on ABC Channel 7 and on the Discovery Channel. His artwork includes cheek, full face, parts, full body and character, which he applies with brushes, sponges and even airbrushes. He uses water based pastes which wash off easily with soap and water. Hunter’s safety CHILLICOTHE — A Department of Natural Resources hunter safety education course will be held at the Chillicothe Sportsmen’s Club, located north of Chillicothe, at 21228 North Yankee Lane. The 13-hour course will be held over three days, meeting from 6 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 and Friday, Aug. 7, and from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8. Students must attend all 13 hours of the class. The free course will include

PC golf outing MCNABB — The annual Putnam County Athletic Booster Club golf outing will be Saturday, Aug. 8, at Edgewood Golf Course. This will be a four-person best ball scramble. The cost is $60 per golf, which includes the golf fee, golf cart, drink tickets and gifts. There will be cash prizes for a hole in one and first place.
