Z Tour bike event hits a new record By Goldie Rapp grapp@bcrnews.com

PRINCETON — This year’s Z Tour event hit records with the number of cyclists it attracted from the area and beyond. Z Tour Bike Ride Director Brian Church said at least 771 cyclists registered for the event. Riders from as far as California, Texas, North Carolina, Ohio, Wisconsin and Minnesota came to experience the 10-, 30-, 50-, 65- or 100mile routes. “Our registration totals have increased each year the Zearing Child Enrichment Center (ZCEC) has hosted the event,” Church said. “In reviewing some rider feedback, they seem very complimentary regarding the enthusiasm and dedication

our volunteers and also of our routes that Ryan Crouch creates each year.” Church said Z Tour has become a premier cycling event. “Although we don’t consider the ride to be a race, everybody is a winner,” he said. New this year, the Z Tour Planning Committee hired local band 212 to play at Zearing Park. Church said the band provided a great atmosphere for riders to enjoy after the ride. Also, five massage therapists donated time and talents to riders. The new Pints for Our Half Pints Promotion was also a huge success, Church said. “Our supply of glasses sold out Friday night in less than two hours. The pint glasses were sold for $10,

which also included five tokens for $2 off a beverage at five local restaurants or bars,” he said. While the Z Tour Committee is still totaling the proceeds that will benefit ZCEC, Church said its working diligently to keep expenses to a minimum in order to maximize the donation. Since the fundraiser’s inception seven year ago, it’s donated $108,000 to ZCEC, which has operated as a non-profit early childhood education center since 1974 and strives to provide affordable service to all families. “With the rising costs we are currently experiencing in delivering these service, the donation will go a long ways in helping to meet this need,” Church said.

Protect yourself this mosquito season IDPH offers tips to guard against mosquito bites SPRINGFIELD – As we enter mosquito season, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is reminding Illinoisans of the best ways to avoid being bitten. Different types of mosquitoes can carry different types of diseases, like West Nile virus and Zika virus, but steps you can take to protect yourself from mosquito bites are essentially the same. “Each year since 2002 when we saw the first human cases of West Nile virus in Illinois, we’ve seen the virus circulate across the state,” said IDPH Director Nirav D. Shah, M.D. J.D. “Now, for the second summer, we’re monitoring for Zika virus in Illinois. While Zika is also primarily transmitted through the bite of a mosquito, the main type of mosquito that carries Zika virus is rarely found in Illinois. However, taking some simple precautions can help you avoid mosquito bites, regardless of the type of mosquito or the diseases they carry.” West Nile virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Culex pipiens, “house” mosquito. Mild cases of West Nile virus infections may cause a slight fever or headache. More severe infections are marked by a rapid onset of a high fever with head and body aches, disorientation, tremors, convulsions, and in the most severe cases, paralysis or death. Symptoms usually occur from three to 14 days after the bite of an infected mosquito. However, four out of five people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms. People older than 50 are at higher risk for severe illness from West Nile virus. Zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of

an Aedes aegypti mosquito, a mosquito that rarely has been found in Illinois. Unlike West Nile virus, Zika virus can be passed from person to person through sex, so it’s important to wear a condom if you or your partner may have been exposed to Zika. Many people infected with Zika virus won’t have symptoms or will have only mild symptoms and might not realize they have been infected. The most common symptoms of Zika are fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis (red eyes), and typically last several days to a week. However, Zika virus infection during pregnancy can cause a serious birth defect called microcephaly, as well as other severe fetal brain defects. Since December 2015, 116 cases of Zika virus have been reported in Illinois; 115 cases are travel-related and one case occurred through sex with someone who traveled to an area with Zika virus. More information about Zika virus can be found on the IDPH website. Predicting how bad the mosquito season will be is like predicting the weather; it can change week to week. The key factors in determining high or low levels of mosquito activity are temperature and rainfall. Although people usually notice mosquitoes during rainy conditions, those mosquitoes are commonly called floodwater or nuisance mosquitoes (Aedes vexans) and typically do not carry disease. In hot, dry weather, mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus breed in stagnant water, like street catch basins and ditches, and multiply rapidly. Similarly, the type of mosquito that carries Zika virus also breeds in stagnant water like empty flower pots, tires and any container that

holds water that is not changed weekly. There are two other types of mosquitoes (Aedes albopictus and Aedes triseriatus) found in Illinois that can also carry disease and breed in water-collecting containers. Here are some simple precautions you can take to reduce the number of mosquitoes around your home and protect yourself from being bitten. Precautions include practicing the three “Rs” – reduce, repel and report. • REDUCE — make sure doors and windows have tight-fitting screens. Repair or replace screens that have tears or other openings. Try to keep doors and windows shut. Eliminate, or refresh each week, all sources of standing water where mosquitoes can breed, including water in bird baths, ponds, flowerpots, wading pools, old tires and any other containers. • REPEL — when outdoors, wear shoes and socks, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt, and apply insect repellent that contains DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535, according to label instructions. Consult a physician before using repellents on infants. • REPORT — report locations where you see water sitting stagnant for more than a week such as roadside ditches, flooded yards, and similar locations that may produce mosquitoes. The local health department or city government may be able to add larvicide to the water, which will kill any mosquito eggs. Additional information about West Nile virus can be found on the IDPH website.

West Nile Virus surveillance and testing begins The Bureau, Putnam and Marshall County Health Departments urge the public to take precautions to protect you and your family from mosquito bites. Outbreaks of West Nile Virus (WNV) occur each summer in the United States, and warmer temperatures mean more mosquitoes. Take these common-sense precautions to minimize mosquito bites this summer: • Avoid being outdoors at night and early morning, when mosquitoes are active. • When outdoors during these times wear light colored clothing and apply insect repellent. • Ensure doors and windows have tight, properly fitting screens.

• Eliminate all sources of standing water that support mosquito breeding (i.e. bird baths, wading pools, flowerpots, tires, cans, buckets, clogged gutters, abandoned swimming pools, etc.) on your property. This is especially important to do because the mosquitoes that carry WNV breed in shallow containers of stagnant water. Your local health departments are now accepting dead birds for testing of WNV. The public is encouraged to help locate birds that may have died from the disease. Sick birds or birds that have been dead less than 12 hours may be eligible for testing. To qualify for testing, birds must

meet these guidelines: • Birds must be dead less than 12 hours (fresh), and the carcass must not have obvious signs of trauma (struck by a vehicle, window or animal attack), decay or strong odor. Birds dying from WNV are usually found singly, scattered over a wide area. In contrast, birds that die from other causes (storm mortality, food poisoning, toxicants) often die in groups or clusters. • Only adults should handle dead birds. Pick the bird up with gloves, tongs or a shovel. If you do not have gloves, insert your hand into a plastic bag like it is a glove, grasp the bird carefully and invert the

Elvis toast with candied bacon submitted by Chestnut Street Inn of Sheffield was the winning recipe in the BedandBeakfast.com 2017 Breakfast Tournament.

Chestnut Street Inn wins breakfast contest Fans of BedandBreakfast.com have spoken by selecting the Elvis Toast with Candied Bacon as the Best B&B Breakfast in the United States. The winning breakfast is a creation of the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield. A close favorite, the Potato, Ham and Cheddar Waffle by Aldrich Guest House in Galena, came in second in the sixth-annual Best B&B Breakfast Tournament. Rounding out the four finalists are Montana Morning, a trout cake with poached egg from Good Medicine Lodge in Whitefish, Mont., and Ham and Cheese Soufflé Roll of Miss Spenser’s of Longview Farms in New Virginia, Iowa. “We used to live in Las Vegas, and of course, Elvis was King of the Strip; so we thought we’d play on his favorite food – a peanut butter, banana and bacon sandwich,” said Monika Sudakov, innkeeper of Chestnut Street Inn. “It’s literally the ‘King of Breakfasts.’” This year’s winning recipes continued a several-year stretch during which French Toast won top honors. Last year, Bananas Foster-Style Banana-Pecan Stuffed French Toast by Weller-

Haus Bed, Breakfast and Event Center in Bellevue, Ky., took first place. BedandBreakfast.com’s Best B&B Breakfast Tournament contest is a bracket much like the college basketball championship finals, with BedandBreakfast.com’s Facebook fans voting on their favorites among 16 finalists. “Breakfast is a signature amenity of B&Bs, and the Best B&B Breakfast Tournament is a great way to showcase these creative and mouthwatering dishes,” said Lisa Westlake Chen, general manager of BedandBreakfast.com. “We had more entries from B&Bs and more votes from our Facebook fans than ever, with the final vote coming down between savory and sweet.” The 16 breakfast finalists were chosen based on recipe creativity, uniqueness and appeal by guest judges including Anne Banas, editor for BBC Travel; Sarah Martens, associate digital food editor, BHG.com, and Jessica Dupuy, cookbook author and writer. Photos and recipes for the Top 16 2017 Breakfast Tournament contenders can be found on BedandBrreakfast. com’s website.

Wet, wacky and wild! The 3- through 5-year-old age group clearly had a wild time during the third annual Wet and Wacky Obstacle Course, held recently in Sheffield at Veterans Park. Participants were able to have a wet and wacky time in the water, as they completed an obstacle course. The fun-filled event was sponsored by the Cornerstone Community Wellness center in Sheffield.
