Welcome to the Bureau County 4-H Fair PRINCETON — The agricultural and artistic leaders of tomorrow will come together to showcase their talents at the Bureau County 4-H Fair, taking place July 23-26 at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton.

Area youth will witness the culmination of a year’s worth of hard work at the 4-H Fair. Judges will evaluate the quality and creativity of their entries, with 4-H members choosing from more than 250 different categories to dedicate their time, including visual arts, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, animals and more ...

The projects are displayed on tables specifically assigned for different categories, and all sorts of livestock are brought to and kept at the fairgrounds to be displayed and judged, including sheep, goats, poultry, horses, swine and cattle.

The exhibit buildings open at 7:30 a.m.

Thursday, July 23, closing by 8:30 p.m. each evening, and the event runs through the awards program at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 25. All 4-H members who receive an Illinois State Fair ribbon are invited to display their projects at the Illinois State Fair on Aug. 17.

There will be a clothing/sewing judging at 4 p.m. Monday, July 20, and a public presentations judging at 1 p.m. Tuesday, July 21, both at the Extension Office.

The weekend will conclude with horse gaming at 10 a.m. Sunday, July 26, at the fairgrounds.

All events are open to the public with free admission.

Other events at the library: Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m., the children’s library will host Maggie Erdmann as Maggienificent for a program titled, “Rhythm of Righteousness.” This is an hour-long program of laughter and fun for children (and adults) of all ages. The show encourages reading and has character values such as kindness intertwined throughout the show. The show is filled with music, magic and puppets to entertain young audiences.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library is continuing the summer reading program.

Tuesday, July 28, at 10 a.m., there will be an agricultural program sponsored by the Bureau County Farm Bureau.

All programs are free and open to residents of Selby Township. For more information on the summer reading program, call the library at 815-4472660.

The library is also hosting an English as a Second Language class on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m. The classes will continue for six weeks.

Any adults who would like to improve their English speaking skills are encouraged to attend.

The library is also hosting Rocket Readers!

This club uses computer games, activities and story time to encourage elementary students to

improve their reading skills. The club is open to elementary students in second through fifth grades. The club meets on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m.

SHEFFIELD —The Sheffield Public Library is currently hosting its summer reading program.

Children ages 5-7 meet on Tuesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Children ages 8-11 meet on Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m.

Summer hours at the library are: Monday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., Wednesday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed on Thursdays, Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. to noon.

LAMOILLE — The library’s summer reading program ends Friday, July 31. Compete with friends, meet a goal and collect prizes before the program is over.

WALNUT — Ever wondered how a 3D printer works? Walnut Public Library was chosen through the Make-It-AtYour-Library program to test out a Dremel 3D Printer. The library has it on loan through the end of July and is making appointments for anyone interested in seeing it in operation. Call the library at 815-3792159 to set up an appointment.

Appointments are being scheduled on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 to 4 p.m.

The library also has an ongoing coupon exchange. Even if coupons are expired, bring them to the library. The expired coupons are sent to troops serving overseas.

TISKILWA — The Tiskilwa Public Library has kicked-off its summer reading program for tweens, from fifth to eighth grades. Readers will meet on Tuesdays.

Sessions are from 2:30 to 4 p.m.

LADD — The Ladd Public Library continues to hold story times on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. and the Junior Book Club at 1 p.m. on Tuesdays. Currently, the club is reading, “Holes.”

‘The Nurses’ Your favorite medical drama just did the unthinkable.

They killed off the character everyone loved best, and you almost feel betrayed.

You enjoyed w a t c h ing what happened every week, loved seeing drama Terri unfold and Schlichenmeyer g e t t i n g immersed in the story line. Not anymore.

Still, TV’s not always reality, you know. He might not be “dead,” and hospitals don’t run like that anyhow, as you’ll see in “The Nurses” by Alexandra Robbins.

Imagine a job where lifting “approximately 1.8 tons” in an 8-hour shift is a requirement, where squabbles and sexual harassment are common, and appreciation is often rare. You might work all day without eating and without restroom breaks, and your life could be in some degree of danger at all times.

Welcome to nursing.

With this description in mind and wanting to know more about the medical personnel who know you better than your doctor does, Alexandra Robbins “interviewed hundreds of nurses” in North America and overseas. She also shadowed four nurses working at various hospitals in an unnamed “major American city.”

There was soft-spoken Molly, who understood that nurses sometimes get the short shrift in hospital budgets, an issue that irked her at a time when she had more important things on her mind. Sam, a first-year nurse, needed every ounce of self-confidence to fight undeserved gossip from peers who didn’t understand her quiet personality or her focus.

Juliette hated the lack of support and acceptance within her workplace, and when she learned of a supervisor’s unprofessionalism, she realized that it was time to make a move. And there was Lara, who gave in to workplace temptation and subsequently battled drug addiction. Few colleagues knew of her past or of her recovery, but when an injury required surgery and pain-killers, Lara wasn’t sure she had the strength to fight her demons again.

In following these four women at work, Robbins learned of “egotism,” violence and bullying they endure from patients and co-workers. She also examines why nurses get “crisp.” Yes, her interviewees admitted, medical personnel talk about patients, but it’s not personal. Yes, there are things that nurses wish they could tell you. And no, it’s not easy work but most “’truly love nursing.’”

Those of you who are (or are related to) nurses are nodding your heads, aren’t you? Yep, you know the truth. Author Alexandra Robbins’ subjects don’t gloss over anything here; in fact, “The Nurses” is exciting and honest, from admission to release.

But personal stories aren’t the entire reason to read this book: Robbins also busts myths, shows the inner workings of Emergency Rooms, offers golden advice, and she explains behindthe-scenes events and why nurses deserve way more kudos than they get. That nicely balances the inherent drama in the four personal stories, though it might make patients outraged.

I can see this book for nurses, definitely, but it’s also something to read if you’re thinking of nursing school or if you might need medical care anytime soon. “The Nurses” contains good stories, but it’s also helpful.

In short, it’s a reader’s McDream.

VFW announces essay competition Commander Philip Maughan of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Department of Illinois announced the kick-off of the VFW’s annual Patriot’s Pen youth essay competition. Middle school students in Grades 6-8 in Illinois have the opportunity to compete and win at the post, district, department and national

levels.

The VFW enacted the Patriot’s Pen competition in 1995 to encourage young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society by composing a 300-400 word patriotic themed essay.

The theme for the 2015-16 competition is

“What Freedom Means to Me” Students begin by competing at the local post level. Post winners advance to district competition with the district winner advancing to the state competition.

State first-place winner will compete for their share of thousands of dollars in awards. The national first – place winner

is awarded $5,000 and an all-expensepaid trip to Washington, D.C. Each year, more than 125,000 students participate nationwide. The deadline for student’s entries is Nov. 1, and interested students and teachers should contact their local VFW post for more information or email VFW state at vfwil@vfwil.org.

The Illinois Valley Hospice will host a “My Treasure Chest” workshop for children who have experience the death of a loved one from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 1, at the Illinois Valley Community Hospital Sixth Street office building in Peru. Children will listen to stories, design their own treasure chest, sing songs and fill out a workbook to remember their loved one. The workshop is for children age 5-14.

Materials and lunch will be provided. Children are asked to bring a picture of a loved on or any small keepsake that reminds them of their loved one.

Tiger Tennis Classic PRINCETON — The Princeton High School tennis program will host the Tiger Tennis Classic Saturday, July 25 and Saturday, Aug. 1 fat the PHS tennis courts.

The doubles tournament held July 25 will have men’s doubles, women’s doubles, junior boys & girls doubles and adult mixed doubles. In the junior division (boys & girls) there will be three age groups: 14 & under, 16 & under and 18 & under. In the adult division there will be two age groups: under 40 and over 40.

The singles tournament Aug. 1, will have men’s singles, women’s singles and juniors boys and girls singles.

Awards will be given to first and second place in the main draw and consolation in each division. The tournament costs per person are: adult singles, $14; adult doubles and junior doubles, $12; junior singles, $10 plus one can of balls per event.

Red Devil Golf Classic

SPRING VALLEY — The Hall Athletic Parents Club will host the Red Devil Classic Aug. 15 at Spring Creek Golf Course.

It will be will be a four-person, best ball scramble.

Entry fee is $60 per golfer, which includes golf and a pork chop/brats dinner. Registration starts at 10 a.m. with a 10 a.m. shotgun start.

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School Booster Club event will be Saturday, Aug. 15, at Wyaton Hills Golf Course.

Registration fees are $75 per golfer and $30 for dinner. Golf will be limited to the first 20 teams to sign up. One golfer will have a chance to win $5,000 in the putting contest.

Registration will start at 10 a.m. with a shot gun start at 11 a.m. Dinner will be served at Fitzgerald’s Banquet Center at 6 p.m.

Sometimes we just want some comfort food, and these recipes seem to fit that desire. With summer produce coming in, I’ve also included a few to help you use up some of your garden goodies.

Chicken and Ham Roll Ups 4 boneless skinless chicken breasts split open 4 slices deli ham 1 1/2 cups shredded Colby Jack cheese 1 10 3/4-ounce can cream of chicken soup 1 cup milk 1 8-ounce package medium egg noodles, cooked Arrange open chicken breasts in a 13-by-9-inch baking pan sprayed with Pam. Layer each with one slice ham.

Sprinkle with cheese. Roll up each breast lengthwise. Secure closed with toothpicks. Set aside. Combine soup and milk, pour over roll ups. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake at 425° for 45 minutes. Divide cooked noodles equally among 4 serving plates. Arrange one roll up on each bed of noodles, spoon remaining soup mixture on top. Remove toothpicks before serving. Serves 4.

Marvelous Meatloaf 3/4 cup bread crumbs 3/4 cup milk 1 1/2 pounds ground beef 1 onion, chopped 1 teaspoon salt 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 1/2 cup catsup 2 tablespoons mustard

2 tablespoon brown sugar, packed Combine bread crumbs and milk. In a large mixing bowl; add the next 5 ingredients; mixing well. Place into an ungreased 9-by-5-inch loaf pan; set aside. Stir catsup, mustard and sugar together; spoon over meatloaf. Bake at 375° for one hour.

Serves 8.

Best Ever Potato Salad

Whisk flour and 1/4 cup milk together until thickened; set aside. Pour remaining milk over potatoes and peas in the stockpot; add butter. Heat through; stir in flour mixture. Continue heating until warmed through and creamy. Salt and pepper to taste before serving. Serves 4.

Crunchy Cauliflower Salad

1 head lettuce, torn 1 head cauliflower, chopped 4 cups potatoes, peeled cubed and boiled 1 sweet onion, chopped 1 cup mayonnaise 1 pound bacon, crisply cooked and 4 hard boiled eggs, peeled and chopped crumbled 1 1/2 cups celery, chopped 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup radishes, chopped 1/3 cup grated Parmesan cheese 1/2 cup green onions, chopped Salt and pepper to taste 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 2 cups mayonnaise 1/2 teaspoon celery seed In a large bowl, combine lettuce, cau1 tablespoon cider vinegar liflower, onion and bacon; toss well. Set 2 teaspoons mustard aside. Mix together sugar and Parmesan 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped cheese, sprinkle over lettuce mixture. Salt 1 teaspoon pepper and pepper to taste. Spread mayonnaise Combine ingredients in a large bowl; on top; cover and refrigerate overnight. mix well. Cover and refrigerate until serv- Toss gently before serving. Serves 8. ing. Serves 6 to 8.

Creamy Potatoes and Baby Peas 2 1/2 cups new redskin potatoes, cubed 1/2 cup baby green peas 2 tablespoons flour 2 cups milk, divided 2 tablespoons butter Salt and pepper to taste Place potatoes in a stockpot, cover with water. Boil until potatoes are tender, adding peas during last 4 minutes of cooking time; remove from heat. Drain; set aside.

1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/2 cup milk Season chicken with salt and pepper, brown in a skillet with oil. Sprinkle flour over the top, stir in broth, water, onions, beans and carrots. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 5 minutes. In another bowl, combine baking mix, cornmeal and cheese, stir in milk. Drop by tablespoonfuls into soup, return to a boil. Simmer, covered, for 10 to 12 minutes. Serves 4.

Creamy Grape Salad 1 cup sour cream 1/4 to 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed 3 cups seedless green grapes 3 cups seedless red grapes 1 cup chopped pecans, toasted Combine sour cream and sugar; mix in grapes. Stir in pecans cover and chill before serving. Serves 6 to 8.
