4-H Fair will kick off Thursday This year’s 4-H Fair will run from Thursday, July 20, to Sunday, July 23, at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. The four-day event is the culmination of all the 4-H youths’ hard work and efforts on the projects they have chosen to participate in during the year. The projects are brought to the fairgrounds to be displayed and judged. The general projects will be on display starting at 9 a.m. Thursday. Goats and sheep arrive at the fair Friday with the show starting at 4 p.m. Swine arrive Friday afternoon with the show at 6 p.m. Other livestock arrive at the fair on Saturday and are on display by 8 a.m. On Sunday, most of the fair exhibits will be gone, however all are welcome to enjoy watching the Horse Gaming and Fun Classes, which will begin at 10 a.m. The 4-H Fair is open to the public and there is no cost to attend. Families and individuals are welcome to visit the buildings to see the projects and livestock and to watch the judging events. All ages are sure to find something to catch their interest. An 8-year-old’s mission to spread kindness throughout her community
UTICA — The LaSalle County Historical Society announced a new exhibit at its Heritage Center Museum in Utica. The new World War I exhibit commemorates the 100th anniversary of the United States declaring war on Germany. Museum visitors will learn of Ottawa native and Army Reservist Roswell T. Pettit, a field surgeon, and Henry Meyer of Mendota who fought in some of the most intense fighting by American troops during the spring

Even to mean people.’ itive, upbeat messages like, “Be kind,” “Don’t be afraid to be yourself” and “Be kind to yourself.” Broadus said it got to the point where the craft box at home was running low of supplies, and Gonzalez was asking her for more items to make her bookmarks “I told her she’d have to find a way to make money to continue spreading her kindness because we couldn’t keep up with her demands,” she said. So Gonzalez came up with The Kindness Project, which would help raise money to fund further kindness projects she’d want to continue in her community and beyond.

Her first venture has been printing Kindness Project T-shirts that say, “Be kind even to mean people.” So far, Gonzalez has sold 110 shirts to people in her community, residents in other states and even sent one internationally. Gonzalez and her mother have an online store campaign where the shirts can be purchased for $20 each. “I love seeing people wear the shirts around town. It connects us and reminds us that mean people need a little kindness too,” Broadus said. Proceeds raised from sales go into a fund that Gonzalez plans to use to for future kindness proj-
ects. While she doesn’t have a set plan on what to do next, she’s leaning toward either purchasing a guitar to spread kindness through her love of music and song writing, purchasing items for kits she’d give to the homeless or purchasing supplies to make bracelets to sell to keep her kindness fund active. PRINCETON — McKynna Gonzalez is on a mission to spread kindness throughout her community. The 8-year-old Princeton girl has always been empathetic of others and never has hesitated to go out of her way to put on a smile on the faces of those who need it most. Her mother, Mindee Broadus, said her daughter’s heart for others is very contagious. “Everyone loves her,” she said. To Gonzalez, it has not always felt this way. In fact, she’s had her own run-ins with bullies. But her mother’s advice on how to handle the difficult situations led her to take control in a positive way. “My response was always, if they’re being mean, you need to be kind to them because they’re having a bad day or they need to see what kindness looks like,” Broadus said. “From there, that became our thing. Be nice even to the mean people because they’re needing it the most.” With a new perspective, Gonzalez embraced her mother’s message and began making small kindness gifts for her fellow classmates. The small offering was meant to cheer them up, whether they were having a bad day or just needing to feel appreciated. She put her love for crafting into homemade bookmarks that said pos-

PRINCETON — The donation drop-off site at The Princeton Closet is now located behind the building at the bright red doors. With the NAPA Auto Parts store now a new neighbor, the owner has provided a new cemented area behind The Closet, along with a ramp at the drop-off site and privacy fence. Despite the change in drop-off site, the Princeton Closet will continue to receive items during the same time and days, which are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Saturday. All donations are received at the red doors. Furniture, however, must be brought through the front of the building. Donations can not be left outside the building. The second-hand shop is operated by Church Women United of Princeton. Each year, the profits received are donated back to the community through non-profit organizations. Throughout the years, The Princeton Closet has donated more than $1 million and is working to reach its second million.

LADD — The 2017 “Convoy Against Cancer” big truck show will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, July 22, in Ladd. The show is intended to offer vehicle owners and enthusiasts something different while benefiting a good cause — the American Cancer Society Relay For Life. Farm tractors — new and antique — are again welcome this year. There will be all makes and models of antique and new big trucks as well as pickup trucks. All entrants will receive a dash plaque.
