Big weekend in Bureau County Bureau County residents have two big events set for Saturday.

The annual Music on Main event in Sheffield is always a big time and includes live music, great food, cold beer and plenty of family fun. The live music — Audio Drive and The Cal Stage Band — begins at 6 p.m. and runs through midnight. There will be children’s water fights at the Sheffield Fire Station at 4:30 p.m. and free children’s games and a bounce house at 5 p.m., also when the food vendors and beer wagon opens. New this year will be an adult and children’s pedal pull at 6:30 p.m. and a pie eating contest at 8:30 p.m. For more information, call 815-303-6932. Also on Saturday, the Z-Tour Bike Ride in Princeton will again be a favorite for riders and spectators alike. Starting and ending at Zearing Park, riders leave the park between 6 and 9:30 a.m. There are a variety of courses for beginning and advanced riders. The entry fee is $25 before July 19 and $35 the day of the race.

Quad City Rockfest hits the stage July 19 MOLINE — The iWireless Center is teaming up with MetroLink and the city of Moline to bring Quad City Rockfest to downtown Moline on Saturday, July 19, featuring Night Ranger and Firehouse. This event, from 3 to 11 p.m., features bands inside the iWireless Center, 1201 River Dr., and outdoor on top of the MetroLink parking garage across the street. There will be barbecue, beer, vendors, contests and a huge line-up of acts.

In addition to Night Ranger and Firehouse, Saturday night will also feature Cheap Thrill. Cheap Thrill includes Jeff Labar and Eric Brittingham of Cinderella, Cheney Brannan of Collective Soul and Brandon Gibbs of the Gibbs Brothers.

Other acts announced include local recording artists Eleven Fifty Two, who’s second EP The Company drops this year; the area’s best 80’s rock cover band, Divebomb; and local favorites, The Hooks. The show opens with the 97Xposure Battle of the Bands winner who has been selected from a short list of finalists who first submit a video and are selected by 97X radio listeners and subsequently by a panel of judges at a battle of the bands contest to be held at Rascals June 26.

Share Your History Bureau County Historical Society, Bureau County Farm Bureau sponsor videotapings for area residents WYANET — On Sunday, July 20, representatives of the Bureau County Historical Society (BCHS) will be at the Wyanet Historical Society, 320 E. Second St. in Wyanet between 1 and 4 p.m. to videotape short interviews of Bureau County residents. The interviews will become part of the archives at the new BCHS History Center at the Matson Library building, and they also are part of the BCHS Farm Bureau’s 100th anniversary project.

Residents of all ages are welcome to make appointments for interviews and to choose an area for discussion:

Schooling, family life, church life, work, patriotism and military service, the family business, or dating and marriage. The interviewers will have questions for residents to answer in each area. To include as many Bureau County residents as possible, the interviews will be kept to 10 minutes.

Copies of the interviews on DVD will be given to each subject, the Wyanet Historical Society and the Farm Bureau, as well as to the Bureau County Historical Society.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this year’s Homestead Festival parade must turn in an application. This would include any orga-

Reddick Mansion hosts Civil War collections OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion will display two private collections of Civil War artifacts in its Gardens from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 26. One collection belongs to a local Civil War buff, Bob Diepen of Seneca, and the other collection/museum belongs to Rob Hauff of the northern Chicago suburbs.

The highlight of Diepen’s collection is his replica Mountain Howitzer cannon. Diepen has been collecting Civil War items for several years and has traveled throughout the United States in search of many specific artifacts. Hauff has presented his traveling museum to schools throughout the Chicago suburbs and is also an accomplished presenter on Civil War topics. Hauff has also been a re-enactor for more than 30 years.

Here are a few more recipes for serving one or two people. These recipes are great for living alone or who don’t want any leftovers.

Warm Bacon Spinach Salad 3 bacon strips, sliced 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour 1 egg 6 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar Salt and pepper to taste 3 cups torn fresh spinach 1/2 cup seasoned croutons In a skillet, cook the bacon until crisp. Remove bacon to paper towels. Drain, reserving 1 tablespoon of the drippings. Stir flour into dripping until smooth. In a large bowl, beat the egg; add the water, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper. Slowly pour into skillet; bring to a boil. Boil for 2 minutes, stirring constantly. Place spinach in a bowl. Remove dressing from the heat, stir in reserved bacon, immediately spoon desired amount over spinach, add croutons and toss to coat. Serve warm. Store leftover dressing in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Before serving, reheat over low heat just until heated through. Serves 2.

Turkey Turnovers 1 3-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1 tablespoon milk 1/2 cup cubed cooked turkey 1/2 cup cooked peas or vegetable of your choice 4 teaspoons sliced almonds 1 tablespoon minced fresh parsley 1 tablespoon finely chopped onion 1 1/2 teaspoons diced pimiento Dash each of salt, pepper and garlic powder 1 cup biscuit baking mix 1/4 cup water 1 tablespoon butter or margarine, melted 1/2 to 3/4 cup condensed cream of chicken soup, undiluted or chicken gravy In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese and milk until smooth. Stir in the turkey, peas, almonds, parsley, onion, pimientos, salt, pepper and garlic pow-

der; set aside. In a bowl, combine biscuit mix and water until a soft dough forms. On a floured surface, knead gently 5 to 6 times or until dough is no longer sticky. Gently roll into an 11-by7-inch rectangle, cut in half. Spoon half of the turkey mixture onto each.

Carefully fold pastry over filling and seal edges tightly with a fork. Brush tops with butter. Place on a greased baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes or until golden brown. Meanwhile, heat soup. Serve with turnovers.

Serves 2.

Prime Rib and Potatoes 1 tablespoon olive oil or vegetable oil 1 small garlic clove, minced 1 standing beef rib roast (about 3 pounds and 2 ribs) 2 large baking potatoes Combine the oil and garlic, rub evenly over roast. Place roast, fat side up, in a small roasting pan. Place a potato on each side of roast. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 2 to 2 1/2 hours until meat reaches desired doneness (for rare thermometer should read 140°, medium 160°, well done 170°).

Let stand for 10 minutes before serving. Serves 2.

Sausage Spinach Bake 1/4 pound bulk pork sausage 1/2 cup chopped onion 1/2 cup chopped celery 1 10-ounce package frozen chopped spinach, thawed and drained 1 egg, beaten 1/2 cup dry bread crumbs 1/4 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon grated Parmesan cheese In a skillet cook sausage, onion and celery over medium heat until meat is no longer pink and vegetables are tender. Drain, remove from the heat. Add spinach, egg, crumbs, cheddar cheese and salt. Transfer to a greased shallow 1-quart baking dish. Sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Cover and bake at 350° for 20 minutes or until heated through. Serves 2.

Monday, July 21, Monday Children’s Matinee Movie will begin at 4:30 p.m. and feature a mustang stallion who grows up to proudly succeed his father as leader of the year, but his curiosity gets him caught and sold to the U.S. Cavalry. The stallion refuses to be broken but escapes when a young Lakota brave, also captured by the Cavalry, escapes on his back.

Later on, there will be a Monday Night Movie at 6:30 p.m. The story revolves around a dying father and his son, who is trying to learn more about his dad by piecing together the stories he has gathered over the years. The son believes his father is a teller of tall tales and doesn’t believe he ever cared about his family. But through the tales, the son begins to understand his father’s great feats and failings, and he learns the truth about who his father really was.

Tuesday, July 22, Preschool story time will begin at 10:30 a.m. The theme is horses. There will be two separate sessions. Ages 4 and under will meet in the children’s area and ages 5 and up will meet in the Matson Meeting Room. At 2 p.m., there will be a summer reading masked drama workshop and rehearsal.

Patrons will make animal masks, be assigned parts and work on a readers’ theater script based on “Aesop’s Fables” in preparation for a performance on Thursday, July 24. Z-Tour Bike Ride PRINCETON — The Z-Tour Bike Ride will ride in Princeton again on July 19. There are courses available for all levels of bikers, including 10 miles, 30 miles, 50 miles, 62 miles and 100 miles throughout the Princeton and Bureau County area.

The course features wellmarked bike routes, wellpaved, low-traveled roadways, maps and cues for all routes, radio-dispatched SAG until 3 p.m.

All riders must start between 6 to 9:30 a.m. with the 100 milers out by 8 a.m.

All proceeds benefit the Zearing Child Enrichment Center in Princeton. To register or for more information, visit z-tour.org.

DePue Celebration 5K DEPUE — The fourth annual DePue Celebration will be held July 26 in conjunction with the DePue Boat Races. Registration will be held from 7 to 7:45 a.m. with the race to start at 8 a.m. at the DePue North Fire Station.

Entry fee is $25 after July 14. Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female 5K winners and the top DePue male and female finishers. Awards will go to the 5K winners in the 10 age divisions.

Gateway 5K

PRINCETON — Gateway Services will hold its first Gateway 5K on Saturday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m., starting at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. This 5K is for awareness of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

The theme this year is Superhero Showdown. Runners can chose to dress up as a superhero of their choice. There will be “villains” along the course with squirt phasers cooling the runners off as they move along the course.

The Gateway 5K Superhero Showdown will start and finish at the Bureau County Fairgrounds. Runners and volunteers will be able to park there and registration will be in the main building.

Cost to enter the Gateway 5K is $20. After Aug. 15, it will be $35. All proceeds will go towards the programs Gateway Services provides.

Cornapalooza 5K/10K

MENDOTA — The seventh annual Cornapalooza 5K/10K will start and end at Lake Mendota on Aug. 9. The course will run on the west side of Mendota to take on the rolling hills and sights of rural Mendota. The 10K course will include a 1-mile stretch of compacted gravel road. Runners will experience a mile or more of Lake Kakusha Trail.

Tennis Tiger Classic PRINCETON — The Tiger Tennis Classic will be coming up with weekends for singles and doubles play at Princeton High School.

First up will be doubles tournament on July 19.

There are divisions for men’s open, men’s over 40, women’s, mixed and youth.

The singles tournament will take the PHS courts on July 26. There are divisions for men’s open, men’s over 40, women’s open and youth singles.

Entry fees are $14 per person for singles ($10 for 18 and under) and $12 per person for doubles. Entry deadlines are noon July 17 for doubles and noon July 24 for doubles.

Each person is to provide one can of new tennis balls for the initial match. The winner will take the unused

balls to the next match.

Tournament format will be determined by the number of participants. Each participant is guaranteed two matches.

Sweet Corn Fest Tournament MENDOTA — The 67th annual Sweet Corn Festival Tennis Tournament will be held Aug. 8-10. The tournament will offer Junior and Adult divisions, with the Juniors playing on Aug. 8 and adults playing on Aug. 9-10.

All matches of this year’s tourney will again be played at the Mendota High School tennis courts on the high school grounds on Route 52 north of town.
