Z-Tour is Z-Best ride in area The Z-Tour rides into Princeton on Saturday, July 16. This annual event that benefits the Zearing Child Enrichment Center — a not-for-profit early childhood learning program serving Bureau County since 1974 — is a fun-filled event for bicyclists of all ages and skill/endurance levels.

The event which began in 2011 with about 185 riders has grown substantially. In 2015, there were 601 riders and hundreds more friends and supporters of this popular activity.

Riders can choose from a route that extends 10 miles, 30 miles, 50 miles, 65 miles or 100 miles throughout Bureau County. Registration begins from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, July 15, at the Prouty Building on Princeton’s South Main Street. You can also register at 5:30 a.m. Saturday at Zearing Park. The cost is $40. A light breakfast is served at Zearing Park from 6 to 9 a.m.

Bicyclists can choose which route they want to ride and will enjoy detailed maps, rest stops with food, beverages and music, and well-marked, paved and low-traveled roadways.

Bicyclists can begin their Z-Tour as early as 6 a.m. from Zearing Park and travel at their own pace. Participants will enjoy entertainment at Zearing Park when they return from their Z-Tour, as well as a complimentary post-ride meal after the event.

The event is open to all, and those wishing to encourage riders along the way are always appreciated.

Bagshot Row will perform Friday on Princeton’s Main Street

PRINCETON — Bagshot Row, a retro rock and roll band, will set the stage for the next concert for Princeton’s Down on Main Street Summer Concert Series. The band is part of the kick off celebration for the Z-Tour event taking place on Saturday, July 16. The free downtown street dance will take place on Friday, July 15, from 5 to 8 p.m. The band will start playing at 6 p.m.

Known throughout the Chicago/Illinois area as the top oldies/classic rock band, Bagshot Row has long been a favorite. In fact, the Bagshots are known for putting their own identity on the best music of all time. This would include a healthy dose of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Elvis, Roy Orbison and so much more For the Princeton event, the block of South Main Street from Peru to Marion streets will be closed to auto traffic.

Local establishments will be serving food and drinks outside. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

In case of rain, the performance will be moved to the banquet room in The Kompany’s lower level.

UIS associate professor to relocate endangered birds to Illinois SPRINGFIELD — Tih-Fen Ting, associate professor of environmental studies at the University of Illinois Springfield, will translocate 10, 6-week-old ospreys, an endangered fish eating bird of prey, from Virginia to Illinois thanks to the help of the Illinois Audubon Society. The society is contributing $3,000 to transport the birds by plane in collaboration with the aviation program at Southern Illinois University.

The birds were flown into the Decatur Airport on July 6, and were processed and tagged the following day at the Illinois Raptor Center, 5695 W. Hill Road, Decatur. Later in the day, the birds were released at two sites, one near Lake Shelbyville and the other near Canton, along the Illinois River.

“Biological diversity is important to the long-term well-being of human health and communities,” said Ting. “Efforts to recover threatened or endangered species, such as ospreys in Illinois, are necessary to keep biodiversity strong, so that future generations can benefit from these wonderful creatures.”

Establishing a self-sustaining breeding population of ospreys in Illinois is one of the goals of a multi-year U.S. Fish and Wildlife grant awarded to Ting through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

The objective is to re-establish ospreys in Illinois where they are listed as endangered.

“We’re happy to help with this important project.

This gift, I believe, will make our members proud, plus have potential to educate many more people regarding our effort to bring back this tremendous bird of prey,” said Tom Clay, executive director of Illinois Audubon Society.

Since 2013, Ting and a group of UIS students and research personnel, in collaboration with IDNR, have helped to successfully translocate and fledge 24 young ospreys from the Chesapeake Bay area. The researchers have been feeding, observing and tending to the translocated osprey chicks at Anderson Lake, near Havana, and at Lake Shelbyville. A third site called Banner Marsh, near Canton, was added this year.

Although ospreys have a wide range of distribution in North America, the birds rarely breed in Illinois and are considered vulnerable to climate change.

According to the National Audubon Society’s climate model, by 2080 ospreys are projected to lose 79 percent of their current summer range, particularly in coastal areas.

“Through translocating young birds, we can help with ospreys’ range expansion into inland lakes or rivers in Illinois,” said Ting.

Few classic musical comedies have given us songs that became part of our everyday language, but “Guys and Dolls” has been doing just that since its debut in 1950. “Luck Be a Lady,” “A Bushel and a Peck,” “Sit Down, You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” and many other unforgettable songs by Frank Loesser highlight the drama, antics and romance of this story about gamblers, gangsters, showgirls and a virtuous lady.

Take a step back in time at Ol’ Fashun Threshun Days 39th annual event set for July 16-17

OHIO — Yesterday’s farmers have a story to tell — a saga that speaks of how things used to be and the way things used to be accomplished on the farm.

The 39th annual Ol’ Fashun Threshun Days, sponsored by the Bureau Valley Antique Club, will be held Saturday, July 16, and Sunday, July 17, at the shaded show grounds near Ohio.

The Bureau Valley Antique Club is dedicated to “preserving the past for the people that lived it and to the children that never knew it.”

On both days, event-goers will find a flea market, craft show, a parade, children’s entertainment, a saw mill, a petting zoo, a rope making demonstration, and of course, there will be a wheat threshing demonstration from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

You’ll also want to check out all the tractors, engines, steamers, threshers, antique cars, trucks, farm equipment and more. There will also be a four-class pedal tractor pull with trophies and ribbons awarded.

On Saturday, look forward to an expanded breakfast menu, a pork chop supper at 5 p.m., DJ Paul Robert, who will play old-time country traditional favorites from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and from 5:30 to 7 p.m., enjoy Jack Ness One-Man Band, who will entertain folks with his keyboard, trumpet and vocals from the Big

There is a lunch stand on the grounds and plenty of free parking.

The fee to get in the gate is only $4, but does not include the price of food.

The event is held 10 miles north of Princeton; take Route 26, and two miles before you get to Ohio, turn left and go one-half mile to Albrecht’s Grove.

IDVA asks for nominations of Veteran/ Business of the Year

SPRINGFIELD — The Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs is asking for nominations for the Illinois Veterans’ Patriotic Volunteer and Appreciation Award and the Illinois Veterans’ Business Appreciation Award.

“These awards highlight the wonderful work being done for our veterans,” said IDVA Director Erica Jeffries.

“The Veteran Patriotic Award honors the work of an Illinois Veteran whose contributions in service to the veteran community and their local communities are truly above and beyond. The Illinois Veterans’ Business Appreciation Award highlights and honors the work of any business, organization or a non-profit that has significantly helped veterans, and whose contributions to those who have served our

country are documented and deserve to be recognized.”

Award recipients are those whose efforts add to the powerful narrative that veterans are dedicated, life-long servants whose efforts benefit Illinois’ veteran communities. The Business Appreciation award is designed to highlight and honor those businesses or organizations that go above and beyond the regular call of service to support our veterans.

NORTHFIELD, Minn. — International Experience (iE-USA) announced visiting students, ages 15-18, from around the world are seeking host families for the upcoming 2016-17 academic school year. Host families are needed for the fall semester and full school year.

Hosting an international student is a great way to explore a new culture and promote a sense of lifelong learning and adventure.

“Every year our state plays host to many talented, top-of-their-class students with the life-long dream of studying in America,” says Emily Rolin, iE-USA’s regional director. “And our communities reap the rewards.”

Rolin, who boasts 10 years of work in student exchange, says each student who visits her community brings

with them a unique perspective.

“We have the opportunity to see through their eyes: to explore another culture not through travel, but through relationships.”

Families who host an exchange student often benefit on a more personal level, forming family ties that last far beyond the boundaries of the exchange. Hosting an international student offers these local families a realistic way to explore a new culture right at home.

Expanded schedules at historic sites New Salem, Old State Capitol, Dana-Thomas House will operate seven days a week under revised schedules SPRINGFIELD – Three of the state’s most important historic sites will begin operating seven days a week in an effort to better serve taxpayers, offer more educational opportunities and encourage tourism.

The new hours will apply to: • Lincoln’s New Salem State Historic Site, where Abraham Lincoln lived and worked as a young man • The Old State Capitol State Historic Site, where Lincoln served as a legislator, delivered his “House Dividedâ€? speech and ran his presidential transition • The Dana-Thomas House, which was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and boasts a huge collection of Wright furniture, lights and art glass.

The new hours took effect at the Old State Capitol on July 11. The Dana-Thomas also switched to the new schedule on July 11, and New Salem follows on July 18.

The sites, all run by the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency, will operate on the expanded schedule throughout tourist season. “Historic sites contribute to the economy, to education and to the fun of family vacations. We want them to be open

as much as possible,� said IHPA Director Heidi Brown-McCreery. “I am incredibly grateful to our employees and volunteers for working so hard to make these expanded hours possible.�

In 2014, the days of operation were reduced at many sites after cuts to the Illinois Historic Preservation Agency budget. New Salem and the Old State Capitol went from seven days to five. The Dana-Thomas House went from five days a week to four.

The sites can now operate seven days a week by adjusting schedules to use staff more effectively, filling of vacant jobs, bringing in temporary employees and continuing to accept the help of volunteers.

The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency protects the state’s historic resources, which contribute to education, culture and the economy. Its sites include ancient burial mounds, forts and buildings erected by settlers, and homes connected to famous Illinoisans.

Last year, state historic sites attracted about 1.9 million visitors. They contributed about $169 million to the Illinois economy and government coffers

Bishop Hill Folk Festival is July 30-31 BISHOP HILL — On July 30 and 31, the Bishop Hill Heritage Association will host a brand new event, the Bishop Hill Folk Festival.

Located in the village park in the center of town, this two-day festival will present some of the best known folk and ethnic music performers from around the Midwest, such as Bill Robinson, Joel Mabus, Chris Vallillo, Catfish Keith, Bahola, Chicago Spelmanslag and many more. The musical styles presented will span a wide range of folk and ethnic music including Old Time Square Dance Music, Hammered Dulcimer, Swedish, Blues, Bluegrass and Mexican to name just a few.

Many of the artists will also conduct informal workshops in the Steeple Building throughout both days.

These workshops will be informal performance and demonstration sessions where the audience can see and hear detailed descriptions of the particular musical form the artist represents. All activities will be free and open to the

public. Music starts at noon and continues through both days.

The historic town is a perfect place to present the musical heritage of the Midwest. In 1846, a group of Swedish immigrants seeking religious freedom left their native land under the guidance of their charismatic spiritual leader, Eric Janson. The site for their new utopia, later called Bishop Hill, was described to them as a “land of plenty, brimming with milk and honey.� Today Bishop Hill is a quiet country village where the charm and character of the original colony have survived the test of time. Bishop Hill is listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is a National Historic Landmark, and is also an Illinois State Historic Site.

Reddick Mansion to host Vintage Quilt Turn Down OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association is hosting a Vintage Quilt Turn Down on July 16-17. During the “Turn Down,� vintage quilts are stacked on a bed and, as each quilt is “turned down� and displayed, the unique story of each quilt is told — who made it, when, where and for what reason. Other details of each quilt are also discussed: The fabrics, the stitching, the pattern and its history.

Back in early June, the association made a public request of the community, looking for vintage quilts to be part of the event. “We were very happy with the people’s generosity,� said Diane Sanders, president of the Reddick Mansion Association. “We will have 18-20 vintage quilts as part of the Turn Down, including one from Amboy, another from Hennepin, as well as quilts from Ottawa, LaSalle-Peru, and the surrounding local area.�

The oldest quilt in the Turn Down, a woven bedspread, is on loan from Edith Alsvig of Ottawa, and was made in 1849. “We know this because the date is actually woven into the bedspread

itself,� said Joyce Kellogg, chairperson of the event and volunteer at the Reddick Mansion. “We will have lovely family heirlooms spanning almost 100 years on display. The most recent quilts were made in the 1940s.�

During the presentations, white gloves will be worn by the volunteers handling the quilts, and Lorraine McCallister, vice president of the RMA, and Kellogg will tell the story of each quilt.

The Vintage Quilt Turn Downs will be at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. on both Saturday and Sunday, July 16 and July 17, in conjunction with the Illinois Valley Quilters Guild 2016 Quilt Show (at Festivities Unlimited that same weekend).

After the quilt presentation at the Mansion, refreshments will be served.

Cost is $5 per person, and attendance is limited to 20 people per session in order to insure everyone is able to see the quilts. For more information, please call the Mansion at 814-433-6100. All money raised will be used for the maintenance and restoration of the Reddick Mansion.

Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — The library is currently holding its annual reading program.

This year’s theme is “Read for the Win.” Children ages 3 and up can start reading books and keeping track of their reading to earn prizes. During the month of July, children will have a chance to participate in a variety of special programs including: Forest Park Nature Center on July 19; Game Day on July 26; and Library Olympics on Aug. 2.

All programs will be on Tuesdays at 10 a.m. The last day to turn in books for prizes will be July 30. Prizes will be given out during the program on Aug. 2 and will be available for pickup through Aug. 13.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 201617 fiscal year. The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no

meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free. The screenings are administered

by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library will host its Read – For the Win summer reading program from July 8 to Aug. 10. Participants will meet every Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The library will host a range of free activities for children that encourages and supports a love of reading.

Participants will notice a new format for the program this year in the form of bingo cards to track their progress. Kids will be given special bingo cards with reading challenges, such as “read a book with a blue cover” or “build a blanket fort and read a book” just to try to switch things up and try something new.

Did you know that kids who don’t read and keep their minds active over the summer can lose up to two months of learning progress by the time school begins in the fall? Summer reading helps prevent the summer slide by encouraging everyone to read all summer. We want to provide the resources and experience to help bridge this gap, while inspiring literacy and life-long learning.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. LADD — Pre-school story times with Mrs. Dempsey will continue through the summer on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

Movie Mondays will be held each Monday at 1 p.m. through July 25, so take a break from the heat and stop in to enjoy a movie. The library will also be sponsoring its new Perpetual Programs. These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library anytime a patron stops in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

The library is also sponsoring an adult summer reading program this year. Pick up a passport to fun at the library.

The library also sponsors an adult coloring club on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m. Adult card club is on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The library is happy to be offering basket weaving classes. Each class lasts three hours and features a different style of basket. Sign-up for one or sign up for them all. Each class costs $15 and must be paid for at the time of registration.

Registration sheets are available at the circulation desk. The dates and projects are as follows: July 19 from 6 to 9 p.m. square to round basket; Aug. 9, from 6 to 9 p.m. cone; Aug. 20, from 1 to 4 p.m. tissue box.

Online applications will be accepted for the second lottery for Illinois Free Dove Hunting Permits for hunting at select state sites from July 8-21. Applications may be submitted for the second lottery by resident hunters who were unsuccessful in the first lottery, residents who did not apply in the first lottery, and non-resident hunters.

After the second lottery permit application deadline on July 21, hunters may apply for remaining free dove permits on a firstcome, first-served basis beginning at 8 a.m. on July 29 through Aug. 25. Becoming an Outdoors Woman

Registration is open for the “Becoming an Outdoors Woman” (BOW) workshop at the Touch of Nature Environmental Center/Giant City State Park in southern Illinois, scheduled for Sept. 16-18. This is the first year at this location, which means new classes, and beautiful new scenic class locations. The workshop fee is $230, which includes meals, lodging, class instruction, use of class equipment/supplies, transportation during the workshop, and lots of fun. There are 90 spots available in this workshop, and registration will close quickly. Participants must be 18 years of age or older. Kaskaskia bowfishing

The second annual Kaskaskia River Rough Fish Roundup bowfishing tournament is scheduled for Saturday, July 16 on the Kaskaskia River at Wood Duck Marina near Baldwin. The tournament is hosted by the Kaskaskia River State Fish and Wildlife Area. The tournament will be a daytime event taking place from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on July 16, and will consist of both a boat and a walking/shore division.

The boat division will feature a Big 10 format, and the walking/shore division will feature a Big 3 format. Big fish and small fish contests will also be held. Tiger Tennis Classic PRINCETON — The Princeton High School tennis program will host the Tiger Tennis Classic on Saturday, July 23, for doubles and Saturday, July 30, for singles.

Divisions for the doubles tournament include men’s open, men’s over 40, women’s open, mixed doubles and juniors 13 and under, 15 and under and 17 and under. Divisions for the singles tournament are men’s open, men’s over 40, women’s open and juniors 13 and under, 15 and under and 17 and under.

Awards will be given to first and second place in the main draw and consolation in each division. Fees per person/per entry is $14, plus one can of tennis balls per event.

Slow pitch tournament

TAMPICO — The fourth annual double-elimination men’s slowpitch tourney will be Aug. 20 in Tampico. This is primarily a men’s tournament but women are allowed to play also. Players must be at least 16 years of age to play but 16 and 17 year olds need parent consent.

There will be a 10-team limit. If there is more interest generated, it could be moved to a two-day tournament.

Cost is $125 per team. Payout for top three teams. To keep entry fees down teams will be required to supply an umpire for the following game depending on where they are in the bracket after first round. Placing games will have umpires provided.

The tournament is a fundraiser to support the Tampico ball diamonds.

The Z Tour

PRINCETON — The sixth Z Tour Bike Ride, a bicycle road ride originating in Princeton and including many surrounding communities, will be Saturday, July 16.

The event will begin at Zearing Park in Princeton and will include the registrant’s choice of a 10-mile, 30-mile, 50-mile, 65-mile (metric century) and 100mile (century) ride on specified routes throughout Bureau County.

Riders will be able to sign up or check-in early on Friday evening, July 15, in downtown Princeton inside the Prouty Building. Additionally, overnight camping will now be offered at the Bureau County Fairgrounds.

MENDOTA — The 69th Annual Sweet Corn Festival will be held Aug. 11-14 sponsored at Mendota High School.

The competition will be a first round consolation draw to allow everyone a minimum of two matches. Juniors will now play an 8-game pro set and adults a 10-game pro set. All events are a blind draw.

The junior events for boys and girls 13-under singles and 17-under singles and doubles will be played Friday, Aug. 12.

Adults will be competing in singles, doubles, and mixed doubles Saturday, Aug. 13, and singles play Sunday, Aug 14.
