Fabulous fireworks on the Fifth

While a storm postponed Princeton’s fireworks display from the Fourth of July to the Fifth of July, the show was nonetheless a crowd-pleaser. The Princeton Jaycees and the city of Princeton put on the Zearing Park event, helped out by numerous sponsors, community organizations and city agencies as the community celebrated Independence Day.

PRINCETON — The Bureau County 4-H Fair will be held July 19-21 at the Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton. In addition to the project judging, there are several other special events planned. Here are some of the events the public can enjoy while visiting the fair:

Thursday, July 19 • 1 to 4 p.m. — WZOE broadcast from the fair. Tune in to WZOE to hear 4-H exhibitors and volunteers talk about their projects, the 4-H program and the fair.

• 3 p.m. — Ag Olympics (sponsored

by Bureau County Farm Bureau).

Have fun competing in these just-forfun events with a small team. This event is open to all 4-H members; be sure to register in advance. A sign-up poster is located in the Allen Building.

• 7 p.m. — Fashion Revue. 4-H members will take the runway to show off their clothing projects, including sewing and textiles, and clothing decision. The Fashion Revue will be held in the hospitality building.

Friday, July 20 • 1 to 4 p.m. — WZOE broadcast from the fair. Tune in to WZOE to hear 4-H exhibitors and volunteers talk about their projects, the 4-H program and the fair.

• 4 to 7:30 p.m. — The 4-H livestock shows for sheep will be at 4 p.m.; swine at 6 p.m.; and the Master Showmanship Contest starting at 7:30 p.m., where youth use their showmanship skills on three different species — beef, swine and sheep.

Saturday, July 21 • 8:30 a.m. — The 4-H livestock shows for dairy will be at 8:30 a.m.; horse, poultry and rabbits at 9 a.m.; market beef, followed by breeding beef, at 9:30 a.m.; and waterfowl and pigeons at 1:30 p.m.

• 3:30 p.m. — Bob Talbot Memorial 4-H Sale of Champions (sponsored by the 4-H Sale of Champions Committee). 4-H members in livestock projects will be selling their market animals.

• 5 p.m. — Awards program in the new hospitality building. General project awards will be given out at this time.

Making a splash on the Fourth

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade, right? Well, when Wednesday’s Fourth of July fireworks show at Princeton’s Zearing Park got rained out and postponed until Thursday, why not have fun on the makeshift Slip ‘N Slide that appeared on the park’s lawn? That’s what Wyatt Lundquist, Breyn Michael and Anthony Taylor decided to do by running through puddles, taking head-first slides across the standing water, and having a wet and wild Independence Day.

Premise Alert Program offered to county residents Voluntary system informs public safety workers of special needs, disabilities PRINCETON — A free, voluntary program so that people with disabilities or special needs can make their information more readily available to emergency responders is being provided by Bureau County 911, BuEComm.

Diana Stiles, E911 director at BuEComm, said the Illinois Premise Alert Program (Public Act 096-0788) provides for public safety agencies in Illinois to allow people with special needs to provide information to the police, fire and EMS personnel to be kept in an emergency database.

“This information can then be provided to those responders dealing with situations involving these individuals,” Stiles said.

“We can never be totally prepared for a ‘what if’ moment in our lives, and no one ever likes to think about or plan for something to happen to those we love or the things we love, but the

state of Illinois has a program in place that can help 911 provide potentially lifesaving information to our public safety responders,” Stiles said.

The purpose of the program, Stiles said, is to offer guidance and direction to the public safety workers responding to assist those with special needs and disabilities that they will have contact with while performing their duties.

“Disability” is defined as an individual with physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities; a record of such impairment; or when the individual is regarded as having such impairment.

“Special needs” are defined as those individuals who have or are at increased risk for a chronic physical, developmental, behavioral or emotional condition, and who also require health and related services

Both “disability” and “special needs” also include, but are not limited to, a medical impairment that requires the use of pressurized oxygen.

Stiles said Bureau County 911, BuEComm, offers this program, free, to the citizens of Bureau County by attaching this alert to their physical, residential address or their landline phone.

“They can also utilize this same program to enter keypad passwords

or ways to access your home if you are incapacitated and cannot get to the door to let those responders in,” Stiles said.

“Premise alert will not work if you are not at the address attached to the alert,” Stiles said. “Attaching the information to a cellphone number or person’s name is not effective, hence the name of the program, PREMISE ALERT, your physical address is the most effective use of this program,” she said.

Stiles said the program is completely voluntary and will be used only to aid emergency medical, fire and law enforcement responders.

ARLINGTON

Rustic 1854 building renovated into a bar

BY GOLDIE RAPP grapp@bcrnews.com ARLINGTON — A historic stone building down on Arlington’s main drag is being renovated into a bar.

Troy Edwards of LaMoille purchased the building, built in 1854, at 107 Main St. in April and gutted out the old apartment, which had occupied the place for the last several decades.

The inside has been completely transformed into an open concept interior, and Edwards is creating a historic, rustic atmosphere for the new hangout.

When he’s not working as an operator for Union 150, Edwards can be found in his new place, working to bring his vision alive. He said he’s done most of the construction work himself, with a little help from friends with some of the larger projects. He’s hoping to open Troy’s Place by the end of the month.

Edwards is currently putting the final touches on the building and is busy collecting historic photos of Arlington and old displays that once adorned the village, which he plans to showcase inside the bar.

“I’m hoping to draw more people in here with the history,” he said.

The theme of the decor will be “all things Arlington.” Old photographs of Arlington settlers, former buildings, and prominent people who once lived there will line the bar.

Old signs, such as the one that was salvaged when the old Arlington grain elevator was torn down in 2011, will be hung on the walls.

“I’ve know this building from growing up in the area, and I’ve been thinking for years that Arlington could use another bar,” he said.

Customers may also be drawn to Edwards’ “old school” prices of beer and pool. He’s going to keep prices at $2 a beer and 25 cents per pool match.

The bar will also have dart boards, a bowling machine and pinball.

“I’m trying to keep it old-school,” he said.

Edwards also plans to have live bands come in and perform, which he believes will also be a draw.

Edwards is hoping to eventually offer a simple menu, which might include items like appetizers, burgers, hot wings, tacos and pork tenderloin sandwiches.

Edwards pointed out how great it will be for the area to have a place that serves food — whether that’s for people who live in town or those who are just passing by. He said there are not many options for food for people traveling on Route 89 through LaMoille, Cherry or Arlington.

PRINCETON — Festival 56 will present “The Addams Family,” running through July 13 at Princeton’s Grace Performing Arts Center.

The Addams family lives in a macabre Victorian mansion. They have picnics in a cemetery. For recreation, the kids torture each other on a rack. At dinner, someone drinks Grandma’s dark-truth-aboutyourself potion. In an attempt to calm a family quarrel, the family’s ancestors get together and conjure up a terrible thunderstorm. No wonder Morticia and Gomez grow worried when their 18-year-old daughter, Wednesday, falls in love with a sweet boy and invites his respectable family to their mansion for dinner. What if she becomes normal?

Playwrights Marshall Brickman and Rick Elice wrote the book for this new musical while Andrew Lippa provided music and lyrics.

Based on characters created by cartoonist Charles Addams, the play includes the familiar characters of Morticia, Gomez, Wednesday, Pugsley, Uncle Fester, Grandma and Lurch, with the addition of the “normal” family Mal, Alice and Lucas Beineke.

After the play’s tryout in Chicago in 2009, it played on Broadway and toured North America, South America, Asia, Australia, Japan, continental Europe and the United Kingdom. During its Broadway run, it ranked third in ticket sales after “Wicked” and “The Lion King.”

Registration open for this year’s Homestead Festival parade

PRINCETON — The Homestead Festival parade registration is now open.

Anyone who is interested in participating in this year’s parade must turn in an entry form. This would include any organization, church, band, club and class reunion that wants to have an entry in the parade.

Parade entries are encouraged to use this year’s festival theme which is “Generations Strong.” There is no fee to enter a unit in the parade.

The parade will step off at 1:30 p.m.

Saturday, Sept. 8, on Main Street.

The deadline for parade entries is Wednesday, Aug. 22.

Logan girls camp PRINCETON — The Princeton Junior High Girls Basketball Camp will be July 16-19 at Pannebaker Gym, Grades 3-5 (incoming) will meet at 8 to 9:30 a.m., and incoming Grades 6-8 from 9:45 to 11:15 a.m. Cost is $30 per camper.

SVWC scramble SPRING VALLEY —The Spring Valley Walleye Club will hold its golf scramble, Saturday, Aug. 11 at Spring Creek Golf Course with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start. You do not need to be a Walleye Club member. Anyone can play. It is limited to the first 18 teams who pay their entry fee.

Entry fee costs $75, which

includes golf, cart, fried walleye lunch and beverages. All proceeds will be used for the Illinois River fishing stocking program.

Z Tour PRINCETON — Registration is open for the eighth annual Z Tour Bike Ride planned for Saturday, July 21, in Princeton. There is a new group registration category offered this year called Me + 3.

IVCC to stage ‘Mamma Mia!’ in April 2019 OGLESBY — Illinois Valley Community College theatre director Don Grant Zellmer announced IVCC has acquired the rights to present the area premier of “Mamma Mia!,” the hit Broadway musical featuring the music of ABBA. “Mamma Mia!” is slated for production April 18-28, 2019.

“We’re beyond excited for our audiences, community performers and performing arts students to have an opportunity like this,” said Zellmer. “We’ve been waiting for the release of this musical, and the email announcing its availability (from the royalty company) came in at 1 p.m. We got the OK, and applied for licensing by 3 p.m. We announced it on our IVCC Fine Arts Facebook page as soon as we received the license. The excitement is unbelievable.”

Auditions, to be held in December, are open to community members as well as students; dates will be announced in September.

“Mamma Mia!,” as well as fall productions, will be performed in the Dr. Mary Margaret Weeg Cultural Centre.
