PRINCETON — Each year the Bureau County Farm Bureau awards a group of scholarships and awards to those who, through leadership and service, have made an impact on local agriculture and their communities. During the Beef and Ag Day celebrations held at Soldiers and Sailors Park in Princeton on June 24, seven Bureau County students were announced as the recipients of the 2017 Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation scholarships. The directors chose Skyler Brazel of Tiskilwa; Chase Gripp of Sheffield; Kaitlyn Hildebrand of Ohio; Alexa Jacobs of Walnut; Luke Schultz of Princeton; Malena Wheeler of Tiskilwa; and Cole Wright of Bradford to receive financial assistance with their continued education. Brazel is attending Iowa State University and is majoring in horticulture and global resource systems.

Gripp will be attending Purdue University and will be studying ag systems management. Hildebrand is attending Illinois Central College while majoring in animal science. Jacobs will be studying at Southern Illinois University while studying agricultural education. Schultz will be going to Black Hawk College to major in agribusiness. Wheeler is attending the University of Wisconsin to study agribusiness. Wright will be studying agribusiness and crop science while attending Black Hawk East. All of the students were active in a variety of extracurricular activities which included a strong focus on FFA and 4-H participation. Through the past 22 years, the Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation has awarded more than $76,000 in financial assistance to promising students of Bureau County Farm Bureau members or their dependents. The second annual Bureau County AgVocate Award was presented to Sheffield’s Brummel family. The award is presented to families or individuals who have provided service to their communities through agriculture and other endeavors. Ken Brummel and his family have served with the State Young Leader Committee; the Bureau County Farm Bureau and the Bureau County Farm Bureau Women’s Committee. The Brummels have also offered a scholarship to two Bureau Valley teachers who will be attending a Summer Ag Institute for educators supported by the Bureau County Farm Bureau. Ken and his son, Richard, are also members of their local Emergency Medical Technician/Rescue unit, and Kay Brummel is involved with education committees at Bureau Valley High School. The family also supports the school’s FFA program. For the past 11 years, the Brummel family has also organized and supported fundraising events to help support local families in need.

Festival 56 presents ‘Seussical the Musical’ PRINCETON — Festival 56 will present “Seussical™ the Musical,” a production intended for all children under the age of 100. The third production in the 2017 season, the Dr. Seuss-for-all-ages show will run July 7–15 at the Grace Performing Arts Center in Princeton. The “Seussical” ensemble features the Festival 56 summer company along with children from Camp 56, the festival’s theater camp for young people ages 8–18. “Seussical,” a combination of the most popular Seuss books, takes place in the magical Jungle of Nool and is narrated by The Cat in the Hat. Cat in the Hat fans will enjoy the Cat’s antics, especially when he steps through what theater folks call the “fourth wall” and interacts with the audience. The main character is the familiar Horton the Elephant, who discovers Whoville and its residents, the Whos, inside a speck of dust. Horton also discovers and bonds with the Who boy Jojo, who is in trouble for thinking “thinks.” The plot thickens as Horton tries to protect Whoville and an egg abandoned by the irresponsible Mayzie LaBird. As a result of his good intentions, Horton is ridiculed by the Sour Kangaroo and put on trial for insanity. Horton’s friend Gertrude McFuzz

stands by him, however, in spite of her own self-image problem — she has only one feather in her tail. Of course, the story has a happy ending. Love, loyalty, and unity prevail over discord. One of the most widely performed shows in America, “Seussical” was created by Tony winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. The Festival 56 production is sponsored by Langhenry, Gillen, Lundquist & Johnson, LLC, and WZOE/Z98/ WRVY. Season sponsors are Heartland Bank and Trust, Princeton Tourism and Visitors Bureau, and the National Endowment for the Arts. The Grace Performing Arts Center is located at 316 S. Main Street in Princeton and is completely accessible with ample parking nearby. To purchase tickets, visit www.festival56.com, call 815-879-5656, email boxoffice@festival56.com, or stop by the theater.
