Happy Birthday, U.S.A. Bureau/Putnam counties set fireworks celebrations Area residents have a variety of ways to show their patriotism and celebrate the Fourth of July holiday this weekend with community celebrations, family picnics and evening fireworks.

The Fourth of July represents the signing of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, and the birth of the United States of America as an independent country. As is tradition, Walnut will host its annual Hometown Celebration this weekend, with fireworks set for Sunday evening at the Blue Raider Park.

Other area celebrations include the Princeton Jaycee’s annual fireworks show at Zearing Park on Friday; the annual fireworks show on Thursday at the baseball park in Mineral; and the Spring Valley fireworks celebration on Thursday at Hall High School. In Putnam County, fireworks are set for Friday night on the Illinois River in Hennepin.

Timber Lake Playhouse presents ‘Young Frankenstein’ Performances will support Happy Tails Humane Society

Circa ‘21 presents Neil Diamond tribute ROCK ISLAND — Circa ‘21 Dinner Playhouse has announced Simply Diamond, a Neil Diamond Tribute, will perform at 1 p.m. and 7:15 p.m. July 10.

Brian La Blanc, a singer and songwriter from New York City, has been performing both solo and with different bands over the past 30 years.

For the past two years, following the advice of Paul Shaffer of the Late Show with David Letterman, La Blanc embarked on a new musical venture, the Neil Diamond tribute band, Simply Diamond.

Praise for La Blanc’s performances include Shaffer, “I’ve seen four of the biggest Neil Diamond tribute acts, and this guy (La Blanc) blows them all away.” Joey Reynolds, who worked with Diamond at Bang Records, said, “I can’t tell the difference between Brian and Neil. If I closed my eyes I’d swear that Neil is here with me in the room.”

La Blanc started his career working with Rupert Holmes, a prominent writer, composer, lyricist, arranger and Tony awardwinning playwright. He recorded an album with his brother in the early

1980s, produced by Felix Cavaliere from The Young Rascals.

Some of the projects La Blanc has worked on involved Toto lead-singer Bobby Kimball and legendary singer Ronnie Spector. He has performed at many well-known venues in New York City and across the country including a television appearance on the original Star Search. Brian and his band have also opened up for many national touring acts, including Grammy winners, The Blind Boys of Alabama and Survivor.

Circa ‘21 will present a matinee and evening performance July 10. The doors for the matinee open at 11:45 a.m. with a plated lunch served from 12 to 12:45 p.m. and the show begins at 1 p.m.

The doors for the evening performance open at 5:45 p.m. with the five-entree buffet open from 6 to 7 p.m. and the show will begin at 7:15 p.m. Tickets for the matinee are $44.76 per person and $50.42 per person for the evening show. MOUNT CARROLL — Timber Lake Playhouse will present the local premiere of “Young Frankenstein” by Mel Brooks From July 3-13.

From the award-winning team that brought “The Producers” to international acclaim, this monster musical comedy is a dizzy, lavish and fast paced re-imagining of the Frankenstein legend based on Mel Brooks’ classic comedy film masterpiece. Former artistic director Brad Lyons returns to Mount Carroll to direct the hilarity starring TLP’s professional company from all over the country.

The story follows bright, young Dr. Frankenstein (that’s Fronkensteen), played by TLP favorite Cody Jolly, as he attempts to complete his grandfather’s masterwork and bring a corpse to life. Together with his oddly shaped and endearing helper Igor (that’s Eye-gor), played

by Matt Webb, his curvaceous lab assistant Inga (Lexie Plath), and in spite of his incredibly selfinvolved madcap fiancé Elizabeth (Allison Hunt), Frankenstein succeeds in creating a monster (Blake W. Enthusiasts of the film have plenty of new surprises to look forward to in the stage adaptation.

And musical comedy fans will be in heaven with the new, high-energy songs and riotous dances including “Transylvania Mania,” “He Vas My Boyfriend,” “Roll In Ze Hay” and “Together Again — For The First Time.” The production also features some shocking visual effects as well as spectacularly monstrous choreography by Cameron Turner .

TLP’s Do Something Spectacular: Live The Story campaign continues with “Young Frankenstein” through the help of Happy Tails Humane Society in Rock Falls. Happy Tails oper-

ates Whiteside County’s only animal shelter. They are a limited-intake, nokill facility that shelters and cares for stray and abandoned dogs and cats until they are adopted into loving, permanent homes. They promote pet adoption and humane education in the region. At each performance of “Young Frankenstein,” audiences will have an opportunity to help “save the creature!”

This program is partially sponsored by a grant from the Illinois Arts Council through federal funds from the National Endowment For The Arts.

Community Players of Streator to perform ‘Les Miserables’ STREATOR — The Community Players of Streator will perform “Les Miserables” on the Engle Lane stage July 12-19.

Director Doug Bartelt applied for the production rights over a year ago on the day they became available for amateur theatres.

When auditions were conducted in April, performers from as far away as Hoffman Estates and Chicago turned out hoping to land a role in the show. Many were setting foot in Engle Lane for the first time, drawn to Streator by the lure of being one of the first community theatres in Illinois to present this powerful musical.

Newcomers are always welcome at Engle Lane and the Les Miserables

cast has many first-timers, including several of the principals. Roger Amm of Ottawa has been cast as Jean Valjean with Bob Kinsella of Spring Valley as Javert. Suzannah Walter of Sheridan portrays Fantine with her son Christian Tapp as the young Garvoche. Raley Mauk of Spring Valley is Eponine and Derek Zinke of LaSalle portrays Marius. Also making her Engle Lane stage debut is Rheagan Goluba as little Cosette.

Many Engle Lane veterans are also a part of the cast and crew. Shelbie Wahl Fouts proudly proclaims that she basically grew up at Engle Lane. Shelbie returns to her Streator roots from Roanoake, Va., to serve as musical director for the production. Her hus-

band Donovan Fouts has also joined the cast as Bamatbois. Carlye Pillash of Streator, who plays Cosette, started performing as a youngster in the annual Engle Lane children and youth productions.

Les Miserables has become a global success on stage and screen, sweeping audiences through an epic tale of broken dreams, passion and redemption, against the backdrop of a nation seething with revolution. Set in 19th century France, it is the story of Jean Valjean, and his quest for redemption after serving 19 years in jail for stealing a loaf of bread.

In anticipation of ticket demand, an additional performance has been added for Saturday

evening, July 12. The remainder of the run will be July 13 through July 19. Evening performances begin at 7 p.m., with the July 13 matinee starting at 2 p.m.

When he accidentally finds himself too far from the studio, he learns his superpowers and his TV show, aren’t real. A female alley cat and a hamster in a rollerball help to find the way home to the studio and to “his person.” Also Monday, the Monday Night Movie will begin at 6:30 p.m. and feature a lonely and friendless boy who finds and untangles a hurt dolphin that is caught in a crab trap. He becomes very attached to the dolphin when the tail must be taken off to save the dolphin’s life. The boy believes the dolphin would be able to swim normally if it was given a prosthetic tail.

SPRING VALLEY — The Richard A. Mautino Library’s summer reading program Paws to Read will be ongoing until July 24.

Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the first through third grades will meet; Tuesday 1:30-2 p.m. or 5:30-6 p.m., the prekindergarten through kindergarten (story time) group will meet; Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the fourth through sixth grades will meet; and Thursday 5-6 p.m., the seventh through 12th grades will meet at the library.

Also, the library is hosting an adult summer reading program.

Each adult that wishes to participate will be given a reading log and need to record six books they have read during the summer. For each book the patron will be asked to rate the book and give a few comments about the book. The deadline for turning in the reading log is Aug. 1, and then they will be entered in a prize

The library staff is planning a creative writing session this summer. Plans are still being worked out, so stay tuned to the library corner for more information.

Summer reading for the grade school children begins in July. The theme is Paws to Read. Join the library on Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. starting July 9.

Just a reminder, the library has three binders full of coupons for exchange. Feel free to come in and see what’s in the binders or drop off any coupons not be using. Expired coupons are sent to the men and women serving this country overseas, which are still valid to them.

‘Ricochet: Riding a Wave of Hope with the Dog Who Inspires Millions’ You were overjoyed when your dog learned to “SIT!” “Down” came eventually, then “roll over” and “stay.” He can “shake” both paws, fetch, find and you’re working on other Terri wicked-cool tricks that Schlichenmeyer he’s eager to learn.

Your dog is a quick learner but can he raise money? Judy Fridono’s dog can, and in the new book “Ricochet: Riding a Wave of Hope with the Dog Who Inspires Millions” (with Kay Pfaltz), you’ll read more about this YouTube sensation.

Following a tumultuous childhood, a divorce and battling severe illness, Judy Fridono knew that she wanted to do something good for someone else.

Since she’d always loved dogs, she decided to raise a puppy for a servicedog organization — but when the pup, Rina, was ready to be relinquished for training, Fridono was horrified.

She knew she shouldn’t have fallen in love with the dog, but she did — and sensitive Rina seemed to “shut down” from organizational training. In short order, she was turned away as a service dog and Fridono reclaimed her beloved golden-lab mix.

That experience led Fridono back to school, so that she could learn to teach service dogs in a gentler manner. To do it, she needed to begin training puppies almost from birth and, while the first litter was whelping, she “asked” the laboring mother dog for a female puppy with a white chest marking.

The next born was a female puppy with a white chest marking. Fridono kept the baby and named her Ricochet.

For a little over a year, Ricochet was a willing pupil. She did everything Fridono asked of her and even anticipated some of the actions that were expected.

Fridono knew she had a special pooch, that Ricochet would be an excellent service dog one day.

But when Ricochet grew apathetic, Fridono became frustrated. Where did her obedient, smart girl go? What was the key to unlocking Ricochet’s enthusiasm again?

Fridono found the answer buried in sand and surf.

Today, 6-year-old Ricochet has raised thousands of dollars for various efforts.

She has a slew of certifications behind her name and is “the only SURFice dog in the world,” working with the disabled, PTSD-sufferers, and veterans.

That, alone, would’ve made a great tale — if it had stopped right there.

And yet … dog lovers who love nothing more than to compare pooches will revel in this book. Its great be-true-toyourself message is good for all ages, doggy-parents will totally understand its sentimentality, it’ll warm kindred hearts, and even the most jaded reader couldn’t deny that this is a special pup with healing abilities.

Overall, I think this is a total dog-lover’s book but it has flaws that may send some people away. Still, if you want to be completely, 100-percent charmed by a real-life shaggy-dog story, then here’s a book for you.

5 pounds potatoes 12 hard boiled eggs 1 medium Vidalia onion 2 cups chopped celery Dressing Miracle Whip to suit yourself A good scoop of sour cream Salt and pepper to taste Boil the potatoes in their skins; cook until done and cool. Peel potatoes and eggs; chop up and put in large bowl.

Chop the onion and celery and add to potatoes. For the dressing, I just mix Miracle Whip to get your salad as moist as you want, put a good scoop of sour cream in and add salt and pepper to taste. I some times will add mustard, if everyone likes it. For myself I like to add shredded cheddar cheese, chopped green onion and black olives. It makes it more festive.

Baked Beans

2 16-ounce cans baked beans 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon dry mustard 1/2 cup ketchup 6 slices bacon, chopped Combine baked beans, brown sugar, mustard and ketchup. Pour into lightly greased baking dish. Arrange bacon pieces on top. Bake, uncovered, at 325° for 2 1/2 hours.

I generally like to use pork and beans, use the number of cans according to size of crowd. Add a couple teaspoons of mustard, ketchup according to taste and brown sugar depending on how sweet you want them and a small chopped onion. I also like to add sliced hot dogs, 1 or 2 depending on size of dish. Adds a lot of flavor. Can either bake or prepare them on top of stove. I like them better in oven as they get the brown top. Bake as above.

Sprinkle salt over cabbage and let stand 1 hour at room temperature.

Squeeze out any extra juices from cabbage. Add carrot and green pepper to cabbage. Meanwhile, combine all syrup ingredients in medium saucepan and bring to a boil. Boil for 1 minute. Let cool to lukewarm and pour over cabbage, carrot and pepper mixture. Spoon into dish and cover and refrigerate to cool completely. They said you can freeze this, and then when you get to your picnic spot it will be thawed and ready to eat. I have never frozen it so don’t know.

Summer Pasta Salad

1 16-ounce package pasta 1 cup chopped tomatoes 1 cup chopped cucumbers 1 cup chopped green peppers 1 12-ounce bottle Italian salad dressing 1/2 bottle McCormick’s Salad Supreme Cook pasta according to package directions. Drain and rinse with cold water. Stir chopped vegetables into pasta. Add Italian dressing and mix well.

Add McCormick Salad Supreme and mix well. Chill at least 3 to 4 hours to let flavors combine.

Make up some S‘mores for dessert.

Nothing easier than to roast some marshmallows and put out some Hershey bars and graham crackers for an easy to fix treat at the end of your meal.

Heaton-Hudson Memorial Scholarship Two families come together to assist fire and EMS careers

PRINCETON — Sara Hudson and Beth Heaton grew up watching their family members dedicate their lives to those in need — whether it was fighting home fires or assisting a person at the scene of an accident.

The two became lifelong friends through their families’ connection with the local fire department.

Beth is the daughter of the late Richard “Dick” Heaton, who served as Princeton Fire Chief for 20 years. Sara is the sister of Mark Hudson, who worked his way up to deputy chief at the Streamwood Fire Department and had been just promoted to the fire chief capacity when he was diagnosed with cancer and passed away.

To carry on the honor of their loved ones, the Hudson and Heaton families have come together to create a memorial scholarship, which will assist those who wish to pursue

a fire or EMS career.

“My father wanted something set-up not only for kids but whoever had the interest in firefighting or EMS. It’s near and dear to our hearts,” Heaton explained.

Hudson agreed and explained her brother’s lifelong dream was to see the next generation have the same opportunities he once had.

“We feel honored that we can represent this not just for our families, but for all the young people who may not realize this is a great opportunity,” she said. “It’s something a high school student may not even think about as far as a career path, so we are anxious to get the awareness out there as an honor to my brother and her father.”

The scholarship offers one of the following opportunities to a candidate: Illinois Department of Public Health Emergency Medical technician-Basic PreHospital Care Licensure or Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal Entry Level

Firefighter Certification.

The scholarship is to be awarded in amounts up to $500. The first scholarships will be awarded next spring, however Heaton and Hudson said if someone comes forward now with an interest in the career pathway and is seeking assistance, the Scholarship Committee will be more than happy to consider an early application.

Each application is reviewed by the Voting Committee, which is made up of Hudson, Heaton and Princeton Fire Chief Chuck Woolley.

An application and list of application rules can be picked up anytime at the Princeton Fire Department.

Blue Star Museums is a collaboration of the National Endowments for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more that 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to all military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Festival 56 presents ‘As You Like It’ Shakespeare in the Park returns July 6 PRINCETON — Festival 56 will open its 11th season of free Shakespeare in Princeton’s Soldiers and Sailors Park at 7:30 p.m.

July 6 with the comedy “As You Like It.” After opening night, it will be performed at the same time every Wednesday and Sunday evening through July 27.

Fifteen minutes before each performance of “As You Like It,” Festival 56 will offer “Basic Bill: Shakespeare Made Easy,” a free presentation about the play. One of Shakespeare’s most popular romantic comedies, “As You Like It” takes place in the Forest of Arden, making the Princeton park setting for it perfect. It features over-

lapping love stories, most principally that of Rosalind and Orlando. The famous Shakespeare monologue “all the world’s a stage,” is spoken by the character, Jaques, in “As You Like It.” With more than a decade of offering free outdoor Shakespeare every summer, Festival 56 has made it possible for hundreds of people to enjoy the genius, wit and magic of the world’s most famous playwright. Local children have been able to grow up hearing Shakespeare in a fully staged and costumed production before the often maligned introduction of Shakespeare in high school English.

HENNEPIN — The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra will be making a special appearance at the Hennepin Fourth of July celebration with a free concert.

The orchestra will be performing on a bandstand set up directly in front of the historic Putnam County Courthouse, which is celebrating 175 years as Illinois’ oldest operating courthouse. An assortment of patriotic music is on the playlist for the day. The concert will begin at 6 p.m.

The concert is free and seating is Ravinia style on the lawn. So lawn chairs,

blankets, folding chairs are recommended.

IVSO Conductor Lucia Matos is especially excited about the concert. In June 2013 she became a U.S. citizen, conducted Fox Valley Orchestra on July 4 and is proud to be part of this Fourth of July celebration in Hennepin.

The acting concert master, Shuan-Yuan Wange,

also recently has become a U.S. citizen. He normally sits principal second violin.

The program will be patriotic and American music and will include the official Illinois state song with Norm Engstrom as vocalist.

The program will be funded in part by the Illinois Arts Council.

Princeton Community Band plans patriotic concert tenor sax solo on “They Can’t Take That Away” by the Gershwins.

The PCB will present a special package of mementos from the world premiere concert to the Bureau County Historical Society. To mark this presentation, “The Red Covered Bridge” will be performed for the last time this season.

Running Walnut 5K for ALS Research WALNUT — The Walnut 5K Run/Walk for ALS Research (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) will be Saturday, July 5. The race/walk starts at 8 a.m. in front of Bureau Valley North Junior High. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. at the tent located just south of the school. The entry fee is $20 after June 28 and on race day.

Trophies awarded to the top three male and female finishers and medals to top three in each of the 15 age groups (male and female).

Walnut water tower trophies will be given to the first Walnut male and first Walnut female to finish the race.

Results will be done by a road race scoring team this year. This event is a Rock River Road Runners Circuit event. Last year, 399 people crossed the finish line.

Reagan Run 5K

DIXON — Nearly 2,000 participants are expected for the annual Reagan Run 5K on Saturday, July 5 in downtown Dixon. The traditional race that is part of Dixon’s Petunia Festival draws runners and walkers alike and has developed into the premier 5K race in the Sauk Valley area.

The race begins at 8 a.m. with the start line located just steps away from Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home, 810 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon. The unique course takes runners through downtown Dixon, across the Rock River, through wooded paths and finishes in Haymarket Square in the downtown.

Racers continue to rave year after year about this classic and fun course that offers a changing landscape as you run.

The race is a benefit that helps several groups in Dixon including: The Dixon Athletic Boosters, Dixon Main Street, Dixon Park District and the Dixon YMCA Strong Kids.

Early race packet pickup will be Thursday, July 3 from noon to 6 p.m. at the Dixon Family YMCA. Race Day Registration can be done up until 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race at Haymarket Square. No registrations will be available at the start line at the Reagan Home.

Entry fee is $20 before July 14 and $25 after. Trophies will be awarded to the overall male and female 5K winners and the top DePue male and female finishers. Awards will go to the 5K winners in the 10 age divisions.

MANLIUS — The Bureau Valley Booster Club will hold a 5K color run starting at 8 a.m.

Cornapalooza 5K/10K

MENDOTA — The seventh annual Cornapalooza 5K/10K will start and end at Lake Mendota on Aug. 9. The course will run on the west side of Mendota to take on the rolling hills and sights of rural Mendota. The 10K course will include a 1-mile stretch of compacted gravel road. Runners will experience a mile or more of Lake Kakusha Trail.

Preregistration opens at 6:30 a.m. with the race starting at 8 a.m. Entry fee is $20 if postmarked by July 25 and $25 after. Biking Z-Tour Bike Ride PRINCETON — The Z-Tour Bike Ride will ride in Princeton again on July 19. There are courses available for all levels of bikers,

including 10 miles, 30 miles, 50 miles, 62 miles and 100 miles throughout the Princeton and Bureau County area.

The course features wellmarked bike routes, wellpaved, low-traveled roadways, maps and cues for all routes, radio-dispatched SAG until 3 p.m.

All riders must start between 6 to 9:30 a.m. with the 100 milers out by 8 a.m.

Golf Jimmy D Golf Outing SPRING VALLEY — The 32nd annual Jimmy D Golf Outing will be held July 13 at Spring Creek Golf Club and Deer Park Country in Oglesby. The event is named for James A. “Jimmy D” DeAngelo, who died in 1983 at the age of 37 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds to help cancer patients.

Last year’s event raised $18,000 for area patients, and throughout the past 31 years, it has raised more than $638,000. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Esophageal and Colon Cancer Center under construction at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. Jay Braida Golf

PRINCETON —The 2014 Jay Braida Golf Outing will be held July 12 at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton.

The event is sponsored by friends and family of Jay Braida, who passed away June 19, 2005, from melanoma. He was an avid golfer and sports fanatic.

The event was created in 2010 to help area residents in need. There is a need for hole and T-shirt sponsors.

This year’s recipient is Abbie Cochran of Princeton, poms coach at Princeton High School and an instructor at Main Street Dance Academy in Princeton. The mother of two young children was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy. She is married to Matt Cochran.

All golfers must preregister for the four-person scramble. Cost is $60 which includes dinner. Check-in is 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. Dinner will start at 6 p.m. with nongolfers welcome at a cost of $15 per person. There will be a silent auction.

AMBOY — Amboy Area youth soccer program will host AYSO Soccer Camps from July 28 - Aug. 1 at the Amboy Sports Park. All players age 4-16 are welcome to attend the week long program.
