Happy Birthday, USA! On Saturday, July 4, our nation will celebrate its 239th birthday. As a country, we will do so with fireworks, celebrations, patriotic music, picnics, family gatherings and more. While there will be a variety of events throughout the county to celebrate the Fourth of July, perhaps the village of Walnut puts on its patriotic hat best with its annual Walnut Days celebration, set for July 3-5. The festivities kick off in the late afternoon of Friday, July 3, where the activities begin at 3 p.m. Event-goers can enjoy a beer garden, food vendors, a bags tournament, Bingo, the Little Miss Independence Pageant, the Chamber dinner, a softball tournament, a youth dance and more. Saturday, July 4, is another full day of fun for all ages, including the 5K Run/Walk for ALS, a pancake/sausage breakfast, the Chad Sarver Memorial Car, Truck and Motorcycle Show, the farmers’ market, craft/vendor booths, volleyball and basketball tournaments, an antique tractor and farm machinery show, the soap box derby, bags tournament, Green River Riders pork and chicken sandwiches, pony rides, children’s games, a dunk tank, a beer garden with music by Rout 38 and more. The annual parade steps off at 2 p.m. On Sunday, July 5, event-goers can enjoy another pancake/sausage breakfast, craft/vendor boots, a community church service, wood carvers, another beer garden, inflatable jump house and train rides for children, a Chamber dinner, a Tot Rod and teen/adult pedal pull, the Community Club Golf Ball Drop, another bags tournament, a duck race on Walnut Creek, children’s games, skydivers and the Bureau Valley High School Dance Team. Reddick Mansion to participate in Blue Star Museums program OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion will again offer free admission to all active duty military personnel and their families this summer as part of the Blue Star Museums program. Blue Star Museums is a collaboration of the National Endowments for the Arts, Blue Star Families, the Department of Defense and more that 1,800 museums across America to offer free admission to all military personnel and their families from Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2015. Blue Star Families is a
national, nonprofit network of military families from all ranks and services, including guard and reserve, dedicated to supporting, connecting, and empowering military families. According to Diane Sanders, president of the Reddick Mansion Association, “The Reddick Mansion is proud to be part of the Blue Star Museums program. We appreciate the opportunity to thank our military families for their service and share

During the last two years, we have had several veterans and their families tour the Mansion as part of this program and we are hoping for even more participants this year.” The Reddick Mansion, built in 1858, is listed on the National Register of Historic Sites and is open for tours six days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. (closed on Tuesdays). The Mansion, at 100 W. Lafayette St., Ottawa, also has meeting/reception rooms available for rent for special events.
Reddick Mansion Association announces docent training seminar OTTAWA — The Reddick Mansion Association invites anyone interested in becoming a docent (tour guide) at the mansion to an afternoon seminar at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 7. Docents take visitors through the mansion while talking about the Reddick family, the history of the mansion, and its place in local and national history. Led by Lorraine McCallister, docent committee chair, this one and onehalf to two hour session will include a discussion about the responsibili-
ties of a docent and an in-depth tour of the mansion. Information packets will be provided as well as the opportunity to schedule more one-on-one training. “Visitors to the mansion usually have an interest in history, in old homes or in architecture,” McCallister said. “I enjoy sharing the Reddick Mansion story with them.” Last year, almost 5,400 people, representing 38 states and four foreign countries, visited the mansion for tours and events. Ron Gavin will perform in Ladd LADD — Ron Gavin, an Irish balladeer, will perform from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday, July 11, in the hospitality tent during the Ladd 125th anniversary celebration. Gavin performed across the United States and in Ireland, including the Felon’s Club in West Belfast, the Village Inn in Derry, the Hibernian Inn in Tipperary and for a former
Irish Prime Minister. He is regular at the International Irish Music Awards and Irish Fests around the Midwest. His strong clear voice is equally suited to a rousing rebel anthem, sea shanty, tender love song or pub ballad. Come see his tribute to the early Irish and other miners that clawed an existence from under the Illinois prairie.
Coming to Ladd will be a long overdue homecoming as his grandfather lived in Ladd as a boy with his uncle, Tobias Barry. Other uncles and cousins were also miners at Ladd. Gavin’s ancestors left Ireland at the time of the Great Famine and became coal miners in England before immigrating to Bureau County in the mid 1880s.

TISKILWA — The Tiskilwa Public Library has kicked-off its summer reading program for tweens, from fifth to eighth grades. LADD — The Ladd Public Library is considering starting a Book Buddies program which would match younger children (6-9 year olds) with an older child (11-14 year olds) and would consist of the “buddies” meeting at the library and reading together for a pre-determined amount of time. The idea is to form a type of mentoring program where the older children help the younger children to keep reading all summer long and possibly continue into the next school year. The success and feasibility of this program would depend on the number of children, both younger and older who would sign up for the program. BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. LASALLE PUBLIC LIBRARY — The LaSalle Public Library is also hosting its first summer reading program for adults. The program runs until Monday, Aug. 31. It’s designed to encourage readers to sample four broad categories of books or audio books —fiction, nonfiction, biography and titles by Illinois authors. Readers complete the reading and may enter a free drawing for each genre. Once one book in each genre has been completed, the reader
may enter a grand prize raffle. The winner will take home a Kindle Fire. On Tuesdays in July, the library offers preschoolers, ages 3 to 5, and their caregivers Storytime Express, an interactive mix of stories complemented with a variety of engaging activities like crafts, flannel boards, rhymes, songs and puppets. Fun and educational, Storytime Express is a free program, open to the public. Storytime Express will be offered most Tuesdays from 11:45 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Call 815223-2341 on Monday of the program week to ensure enough craft kits will be available for all participants. The LaSalle Public Library invites families to join in stories with the library’s “Reading Loving Therapy Dogs!” The reading dog teams will be at the library at 4 p.m. Thursday, July 2; 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 7; 4 p.m. Thursday, July 9; 6 p.m. Tuesday, July 14; and 4 p.m. Thursday, July 16. The July 7 Tail-Waggers, with Yogi, is Yogi’s birthday. Those who plan to attend that night to read to Yogi should register before July 3 for the birthday celebration. Tail-Waggers is a fun activity for good readers, struggling readers and even pre-readers. Kids choose a favorite short book or story and read aloud to a reading dog for about five minutes. The dogs love stories, and
everyone is encouraged to read. For children who are not yet reading independently, parents may read while the child holds the book and turns the pages. At 6 p.m., Tuesday, July 7, the library will host Princeton resident and Coke historian Dick Volker and his presentation about the history of Coca-Cola. A long-time employee of the Coca-Cola Company, Volker offers audience members a nostalgic journey that takes them back 129 years to the brand’s beginning. At 6 p.m. Thursday, July 9, the library will host “Mexican Folk Music for Families!” Performed and interpreted by Maria and Yahvi, Old Town School of Folk Music teachers and multi-instrumentalists, this program invites audiences to enjoy and learn about the traditional music of Mexico. PUTNAM COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY DISTRICT — The six libraries of the Putnam County Public Library District will take library patrons on a musical journey through stories and songs during the “Read to the Rhythm” summer reading program. How about a cooling desert of Jell-O or pudding? Sounds good after a hot meal, especially at this time of the year. These are easy to fix, especially when you’ve had a hard, tiring day.
Lemonade Cheesecake Pie 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1/2 cup frozen lemonade concentrate, thawed 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed and divided 1 6-ounce Honey Maid graham pie crust 1/2 cup fresh blueberries, raspberries and sliced strawberries 2 tablespoons sugar Beat cream cheese in medium bowl with electric mixer until creamy. Gradually add concentrate, beating well after each addition. Stir in 2 cups of the whipped topping. Spoon into crust. Refrigerate 4 hours or until firm. Meanwhile, toss berries with sugar. Refrigerate until ready to serve. Serve slices of the pie topped with the berries and remaining whipped toppings.
Strawberry Éclair Dessert 1 1/2 cups cold milk 1 4-serving size package Jell-O vanilla flavor instant pudding and pie filling 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed 2 2/3 cups sliced fresh strawberries 23 Honey Maid honey grahams 6 squares semi-sweet baking chocolate 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
Beat milk and dry pudding mix in large bowl with wire whisk for 2 minutes or until well blended. Gently stir in whipped topping. Layer one third of the grahams, half of the whipped topping mixture and 1 cup of the strawberries in a 13-by-9inch pan, breaking grahams as necessary to fit, repeat layers. Top with remaining grahams. Microwave chocolate and butter in microwaveable bowl on high 2 minutes, stirring after 1 minute. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Immediately spread over grahams. Refrigerate at least 3 hours. Makes 24 servings.
Triple Layer Chocolate Pie 2 cups cold milk 2 4-serving size packages Jell-O chocolate flavor instant pudding and pie filling 1 6-ounce Oreo pie crust 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed, divided Pour milk into large bowl. Add dry pudding mixes. Beat with wire whisk 2 minutes (mixture will be thick). Spoon 1 1/2 cups of the pudding into bottom of crust. Gently stir half of the whipped topping

into remaining pudding, spread evenly over pudding layer in crust. Top with remaining whipped topping. Refrigerate 3 hours or until set. Store in refrigerator. Serves 8.
Cool Raspberry Fruit Dip 1 6-ounce container raspberry non-fat yogurt 3/4 cup thawed Cool Whip whipped topping Mix ingredients until well blended. Serve immediately as a dip for cut up fresh fruit or cover and refrigerate until ready to serve. Makes 1 1/4 cups.
Fruit and Juice Squares 1 1/2 cups boiling water 1 8-serving size package or 2 packages four-serving size Jell-O strawberry sugar-free gelatin 1 20-ounce can pineapple tidbits in juice, untrained Ice cubes 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed, divided Stir boiling water into gelatin in large bowl, at least 2 minutes until completely dissolved. Drain pineapple, reserving juice. Add enough ice into juice to measure 1 1/2 cups. Stir into gelatin. Refrigerate about 45 minutes or until slightly thickened. Remove 1 1/2 cups of the gelatin. Stir in pineapple. Stir in half of the whipped topping into remaining gelatin with wire whisk until well blended. Pour into 8- or 9-inch square pan. Refrigerate about 15 minutes until set but not firm. Carefully spoon fruited gelatin over creamy layer

LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Community Hospital will host a tennis classic Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 5, at the new LaSalle-Peru High School athletic complex located on Airport Road in LaSalle. The matches will begin between 8 and 9 a.m. each morning to accommodate Fourth of July plans. There will be two divisions, a junior and adult division. In the junior division there will be two age groups: 13 and under and 17 and under. The event will have men and women’s singles and doubles, junior boys and girl’s singles, and adult mixed doubles. Awards will be given to first and second place in the main draw and consolation in each division. There will also be a prize for the best dressed mixed doubles team. Kamden is in second grade and was diagnosed with Pediatric Auto-Immune Neuropsychiatric Disorder Associated with Strep in 2012. He was recently diagnosed with Lyme disease and Toxic Encephalitis. SPRING VALLEY — The 33rd annual Jimmy D Golf Day will be Sunday, July 12, at Spring Creek Golf Course and Deer Park Country Club in Oglesby. The event is held in memory of James A. “Jimmy” DeAngelo, who died at age 37 in 1983 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds for cancer patients. The event raised $20,677 last year and more than $658,000 over the past 32 years. This year’s goal is $22,000. The proceeds will benefit the Esophageal and Colon Cancer Center at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. Event organizers are seeking golfers as well as sponsors.
