Happy birthday, U.S.A. Independence Day, also referred to as the Fourth of July or July 4th in the United States, is a federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776, by the Continental Congress declaring the 13 American colonies regarded themselves as a new nation, the United States of America, and no longer part of the British Empire. Independence Day is commonly associated with fireworks, parades, barbecues, carnivals, fairs, picnics, concerts, baseball games, family reunions and political speeches and ceremonies, in addition to various other public and private events celebrating the history, government and traditions of the United States. Independence Day is the National Day of the United States. Fireworks displays are planned around the area. On July 2, you can find fireworks in Amboy, and on July 3, Peru, Spring Valley, Mineral and Walnut will conduct their annual fireworks shows. On July 4, Princeton, Hennepin, Henry, Mendota, Ottawa and Dixon will wow the crowd with their fireworks. Event-goers will also find a plethora of other activities at the fireworks, including refreshments and good old-fashioned camaraderie with friends, families and neighbors. Take a blanket or bring a lawn chair and enjoy the fun at these fantastic shows, while leaving the fireworks demonstrations to the professionals. Hundreds of people each year head to emergency rooms around the country because of fireworks accidents, so it’s best to let those who are trained to set off these explosives do so. On behalf of the Illinois Valley Scene, we wish you a safe and happy Fourth of July. IVS photo/Mike Vaughn
