Lincoln to practice in Hennepin ... almost A re-enactment of Abraham Lincoln’s State versus Melissa Goings murder trial will be presented at the upcoming 175th anniversary of the Putnam County Courthouse during Hennepin’s Fourth of July Celebration. Circa ‘21 presents ‘StinkyKids: The Musical’ ROCK ISLAND — Continuing the venue’s recent run of sensational stage versions of beloved children’s books, Circa ‘21 Dinner Playhouse brings another literary gem to life in its forthcoming family production “StinkyKids: The Musical.” Based on the award-winning book series, and running through July 12, this tale of the little stinkers who learn to make correct choices through childhood mistakes is sure to delight audiences of all ages, and is being brought to life by a sensational cast of Circa ‘21 veterans.

“StinkyKids: The Musical” will be performed on scheduled Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays through Saturday, July 12, with presentations taking place at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. on selected days. Morning performances will occur on June 19, 21, 24 and 28, and July 1, 3, 5, 8, 11 and 12; afternoon performances are on June 26 and July 12.

Tickets are $8.50 per person for the hour-long, show-only performance.

“StinkyKids: The Musical” concerns a little girl named Britt, who loves making everyone happy.

But this girl who never gets in trouble is in a literally sticky situation: She

woke up with an impossibly epic wad of gum stuck to her hair. All of Britt’s friends are depending on her parents to take them to the new MegaJumper 3000 at Captain Happy’s Jumpy-Fun-Super-Bouncy Indoor Place, so she definitely doesn’t want to disappoint anyone.

So in order to solve her sticky problem, Britt must rely on her mischievous friends to go with her on an unexpected adventure across their neighborhood!

Serving as director is Circa ‘21 veteran Andrea Moore, who has appeared in such productions as “Cats,” “Grease,” “Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” and “42nd Street.” Moore is also a longtime member of the theatre’s performing wait staff, the Circa ‘21 Bootleggers.

And appearing in the show’s ensemble are a quintet of performers from the theatre’s current production of “Fiddler on the Roof,” Alexis Harter, Iliana Garcia, Mitch Donahue, Adam Biner and Mark Bacon plus area performer Lauren Van Speybroeck, who played Wendy in Circa ‘21’s “Peter Pan” and will be playing Elle in Quad City Music Guild’s July production of “Legally Blonde: The Musical.”

CHICAGO — Downtown Sound, Millennium Park’s popular Monday night music series at the Jay Pritzker Pavilion will continue on consecutive Monday evenings until Aug. 11. There will be no concert on July 28. The series offers an eclectic mix of indie rock music and pop.

This year, the city of Chicago will mark Millennium Park’s 10th Anniversary.

Join the city for a summerlong celebration featuring Downtown Sound, Loops and Variations and Made in Chicago music series, film series, workouts and much more.

At 6:30 p.m. July 7, Joe Pug, a songwriter from Austin, Texas, by way of Chicago, will headline the evening. With a modern take on the folk tradition and a work ethic that reflects his years as a carpenter, Pug’s ascension to the national spotlight challenged the traditional rulebook of the industry,

enlisting fans directly to spread the gospel of his songs which balance sharp narrative, social criticism and passionate delivery.

Hurray For The Riff Raff is New Orleans-based songwriter Alynda Lee Segarra, but in many ways it’s much more than that: It’s a young woman leaving her indelible stamp on the American folk tradition.

Hurray for the Riff Raff will open the show.

At 6:30 p.m. July 14, Noura Mint Seymali will headline the evening’s show. She is one of Mauritania’s foremost musical emissaries and a nationally beloved star, having begun her career at 13 years old as a supporting vocalist with her stepmother Dimi Mint Abba.

Drawing on Mauritania’s unique intersection of Arab and sub-Saharan African culture, Seymali pushes the dialectic of Mauritanian griot music forward into deep space.

Heavyweight Dub is the

brainchild of Chicago drummer and bandleader Ted Sirota. In 2013 they recorded with Reggae Dub legend Scientist for their debut album. Heavyweight Dub will open the evening.

Collectively and individually, Aimee Mann and Ted Leo have more years of musical experience under their belts than most. One might call them “lifers.” Over the years, they became friendly, leading to a tour together. Inspired by the folksy but edgy rock melodicism and spooky, soulful atmosphere of early Thin Lizzy songs, they began writing together, growing ever closer and more fulfilled working together until “The Both” (originally called #BOTH, because it made them laugh) was born. Chicago’s Pillars & Tongues craft cinematic art-rock that promises to blanket the Pritzker Pavilion in warm, lush soundscapes with haunt-

ing vocals.​The Both will headline the show at 6:30 p.m. July 21 with Pillars and Tongues opening the show.

Maud Powell Arts Celebration announces 2014 lineup PERU — Peru soprano Sara Ptak, noted violinist Marcia Henry Liebenow and popular Illinois Valley singer/songwriter Steve Sharp will headline the list of performers who will appear at the 2014 Maud Powell Arts Celebration Aug. 22 and 23 in Peru.

In announcing the musical artists who will be performing at this year’s celebration, Chris Coughlin, chair of the event’s organizing committee, said the lineup has something for everyone.

“We’ve got a superb classical vocalist, a talented violinist and a performer whom local audiences never tire of hearing — and that’s just on Saturday night,” said Coughlin, noting the twoday music fest includes

Friday night and Saturday morning and afternoon performances, too.

Ptak, Liebenow and Sharp will appear at an outdoor performance Saturday evening on a stage set up in the parking lot behind the Peru Municipal Building.

Also scheduled is a Friday night performance by the Peru Municipal Band in Maud Powell Plaza, student performances Saturday morning in the municipal building’s community room and a Saturday afternoon drum circle at the Peru Library.

All Maud Powell Celebration events are free and open to the public.

Over the past two years, Ptak has been a fellow at the Toronto Summer Music Festival and studied lieder in Austria at

Sara Ptak the Franz Schubert Institute. She also trained as a young artist with the Janiec Opera Company (Brevard Music Center), the Aspen Opera Theatre Center and Music nelle Marche in Urbania, Italy.

She is now in her first year of an Artist’s Diploma program in Montreal.

Ptak has a bachelor’s degree in music from

DePaul University and a master’s degree in music from McGill University.

Liebenow is Concertmaster of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra and teaches violin, viola, and chamber music at Bradley University. Active as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician, Liebenow’s performances have been broadcast in Europe and across the United States, including on National Public Radio’s Performance Today. She has appeared as a soloist with the Samara Philharmonic Symphony in Russia and with orchestras in Germany.

Sharp is a local singer/ songwriter who is wellknown in the Illinois Valley for his solo performances and his work with bands.

‘Natchez Burning’ All you have to do is ask.

That’s how to keep small life-knitting memories from being lost. It’s how to save tales of your grandma’s favorite toy, your mother’s best friend, your dad’s first love. Knowing those stories preserves history that books may never hold.

And to get those stories, all you have to do is ask and listen. But, as in the new novel “Natchez Burning” by Greg Iles, be prepared for what you hear.

Natchez Mayor Penn Cage knew that District Attorney Shadrach Johnson only called the Mayor’s Office when he had no other option. Penn and Johnson were far from friends — one might even call them adversaries — but Johnson’s announcement that he was planning to file murder charges against Penn’s father stunned the mayor.

For more than 40 years, Tom Cage had been one of Natchez’s most beloved citizens. Dr. Tom had stitched, birthed, vaccinated and tended folks, black and white, and was considered “a saint” by many. That he was accused of killing Viola Turner was ludicrous but when Penn tried to clear up what was surely a misunderstanding, Tom cited doctor-patient confidentiality, saying only that he’d treated his former nurse before she died.

But somebody had killed Viola Turner by overdose, and her son, Lincoln, was pushing for an arrest. Darkskinned Lincoln hinted that racism might be a motive; back in the 1960s, when Viola worked for Tom, Natchez boiled with racial issues and it wasn’t unheard-of for a white man to take advantage of a black female employee.

To Penn, though, that didn’t describe his father.

Tom was known for his fairness and his morals, so Penn began to listen closer to old rumors that resurfaced — rumors about Viola and long-ago crimes supposedly committed by a group of local rednecks that called themselves Double Eagles. Penn heard about the brutality attributed to them, the whispers of attacks on black men and women, destruction of black businesses, people who disappeared without a trace.

Was his father involved

in those murderous activities? Was it possible? Penn wondered … and Tom wasn’t saying.

Though I Terri Schlichenmeyer have to admit that I was ready for the end of this novel by page 490, and though it has its predictable elements, “Natchez Burning” is a very good book.

Maybe that’s because author Greg Iles uses real history as a reference for this multi-layered thriller, which adds raw authenticity to scenarios that will surely give the average reader nightmares. Yes, there’s a whole cadre of bad guys here who would be better described as “horrible guys,” so heinous are the crimes that Iles allows them. Fortunately for readers, that’s nicely balanced by a likeable lawyer-cum-mayor with finely-honed crime-solving skills and a girlfriend who’s hungry for cold cases.

I don’t think this is a read-in-bed kind of book — in part because of many disturbingly heavy scenarios and partly because, at nearly 800 pages, this book is heavy. Still, it’s finely detailed, meticulously set, and written well enough that “Natchez Burning” is a book for which you should surely ask.

SPRING VALLEY — The Richard A. Mautino Library’s summer reading program Paws to Read will be ongoing until July 24.

Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the first through third grades will meet; Tuesday 1:30-2 p.m. or 5:30-6 p.m., the prekindergarten through kindergarten (story time) group will meet; Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the fourth through sixth grades will meet; and Thursday 5-6 p.m., the seventh through 12th grades will meet at the library. There will be reading, crafts and activities for the different groups to enjoy for the summer.

Also, the library is hosting an adult summer reading program.

Each adult that wishes to participate will be given a reading log and need to record six books they have read during the summer. For each book the patron will be asked to rate the book and give a few comments about the book. The deadline for turning in the reading log is Aug. 1, and then they will be entered in a prize drawing. There will be five winners for the reading program.

WYANET — Paws to Read is the theme of the summer reading program at the R.A. Sapp Library in Wyanet this month. The program takes place on Mondays at 2 p.m.

Monday, June 30, Heather Bishop will talk to children about her small animal rescue and possibly bring a four-legged friend. The library will host a pizza party on this day, as well. Prizes will be given out.

WALNUT — Don’t stop saving the Box Tops for Education! The Walnut Public Library has a pick up point for the Box Tops.

The library staff is planning a creative writing session this summer. Plans are still being worked out, so stay tuned to the library corner for more information.

Summer reading for the grade school children begins in July.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library is preparing to host their summer reading program, Paws to Read, during the month of July on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. There will be two age groups this year with those children ages 5-7 meeting on Tuesday mornings and children ages 8-11 meeting on Wednesday mornings. Fun activities are being planned with prizes, entertainment, contests, and of course, reading.

LEWISTOWN — Michael Wiant and Kelvin Sampson of the Illinois State Museum — Dickson Mounds Museum will present a talk, Rediscovering Ogden-Fettie, at the July 2 meeting of the Illinois Valley Archaeological Society. The presentation will begin at 7 p.m. The lecture is free, and the public is invited to attend.

The Ogden-Fettie site is a 2,000-year-old settlement/cemetery complex located on the northern edge of the Spoon River floodplain as it enters the Illinois River valley.

The site has been the subject of archaeological inquiry for more than 80 years. This May, Dickson Mounds Museum archaeologists and volunteers collected artifacts from

PERU — The Illinois Valley Radio Control Club will hold its annual Fun-Fly air show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. June 28 at Flaherty Field airport in Peru.

Many airplane models with wing spans ranging from 18 inches to more than 10 feet will be on display. The planes include scale replicas of World War II aircraft such as a P-51 Mustang, twin engine bombers and a Piper Cub scout plane. A fully restored World War II TBM Avenger torpedo bomber will also be on display if weather permits.

Oglesby Summer Fun Fest invites the kids out to play OGLESBY — The Oglesby Summer Fun Fest grounds will likely be swarmed by children of all ages June 26-29. Whether visiting the carnival, riding a pony, joining the Rhythm Revolution during Kids Party in the Park, taking in a concert or watching the fireworks display, there are many family friendly opportunities throughout the festival for children to play in a fun and safe environment.

Back by popular demand, the North American Midway will be back with its carnival. Featuring plenty of rides, games and delicious fair food, children can enjoy an afternoon or evening running from attraction to attraction. Food booth and carnival hours will be from 5 to 11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, from 1 to 11 p.m. and from 1 to 9:30 p.m.

Sunday. Tickets will be available at carnival ticket booths. There will be no presales. A $20 wristband for unlimited rides dur-

ing either the afternoon or evening will be available along with individual tickets.

The popular Party in the Park is returning this year at 1:30 p.m. June 28. This year children will experience a Summer Safari by traveling only as far as the festival grounds near Oglesby pool. Party in the Park is an afternoon packed with free activities for youngsters made possible by the generosity of local sponsors. At the center of this year’s Party is special guest Rhythm Revolution, a drum circle group that will teach safari guests to jam in the jungle. Other offerings include free face painting, glitter tattoos, rain stick craft and a visit by Ronald McDonald. Vermillion River Photography will once again set up a photo booth for a one-of-a-kind memento.

The festival will close with a huge fireworks display sponsored by Illinois Valley Cellular. Families

are invited to bring along chairs or picnic blankets to view the display. Immediately preceding the fireworks families will be entertained by the Big Fun Band. Featuring Jake and Elwood direct from Statesville Prison and arriving in the famous Bluesmobile, Jake & Elwood will hit the stage with their friends including Ray Charles, Aretha Franklin and Cab Calloway impersonators.

In addition to the main attractions, children can also visit a petting zoo, ride a pony, visit Bosco the Clown, listen to the Serendipity Band, enjoy free ice cream sundaes, watch the Chicago Boyz Acrobatic team, cheer on the fire department during water fights, touch a reptile at Dave DiNaso’s Traveling World of Reptiles, find inexpensive books at the friends of the library used book sale and much more.

PRINCETON — One of the world’s great Zydeco artists, Terrance Simien, and his Zydeco Experience Band will appear in a free downtown street party from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. July 6 in Princeton.

An eighth generation Louisiana Creole, Simien received his second Grammy Award in January. Although steeped in traditional Zydeco music

— an upbeat blend of Cajun, Creole, blues, jazz and soul — Simien has extended his considerable vocal and instrumental talents to performing in all of these individual musical genres as well.

He has collaborated with the likes of Fats Domino, Sarah Vaughn and Randy Newman.

For more than 30 years, Simien and his band have performed more than 7,000 concerts in more than 45 countries, including being the first Zydeco band to appear in Cuba under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Department in 2006. He is a regularly featured performer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival.

For the Princeton event, the block of South Main Street from Peru to Marion will be closed to auto traffic. Four and Twenty Café and Kramer’s will be serving Louisiana cuisine. Fitzgerald’s and Somewhere Else will be selling alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages.

Those attending may be bring lawn chairs or simply stand, dance or wander.

Chicken Fried Steak with Gravy 1 cup all-purpose flour 2 1-ounce packets dry ranch dressing mix Salt and pepper 3 cups buttermilk 1 egg, lightly beaten 4 cube steaks Oil for frying 1 cup chicken broth 1 2.64-ounce packet country gravy mix Mashed potatoes In a large resealable plastic bag, combine flour, 1 packet dressing mix and salt and pepper. Set aside. In a shallow bowl, combine 2 cups of the buttermilk, the remaining packet of dressing mix and the egg. Soak steaks in buttermilk mixture.

Remove 1 steak, letting excess buttermilk mixture drip off. Add to flour mixture, seal bag and toss to coat. Shake off any extra flour and dip again in the buttermilk mixture. Return to flour mixture, seal bag and toss. Set aside. Repeat process for remaining steaks. In a large cast iron skillet, heat 1/2 inch oil to 350°. Fry 2 steaks in the pan at a time for 4 minutes per side or until golden brown. Drain on paper towels. For gravy: In a small saucepan, combine remaining 1 cup buttermilk, broth and gravy mix. Bring to a simmer and stir well. Spoon over steaks and potatoes.

Macaroni and Cheese 2 cups uncooked macaroni 1 medium onion, chopped 6 cups boiling water 3 tablespoons margarine, melted 2 tablespoons flour 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 cup sour cream 1 1/4 cups milk 2 cups grated cheddar cheese Paprika Cook macaroni and onion in boiling water for 15 minutes. Drain through colander. In large saucepan, combine margarine, flour and salt and pepper. Stirring until bubbly. Gradually stir in 3/4 cup sour cream and 1 1/4 cups milk, stirring constantly until thickened. Remove from heat and stir in 1 1/2 cups cheese. Add macaroni and onion. Turn into medium casserole dish. Spread remaining sour cream and remaining cheese over top.

Sprinkle with paprika. Bake at 350° for 20 to 30 minutes or until hot and bubbly.

Chicken and Dumplings Casserole 1/4 cup butter 1 cup carrot and celery sticks, finely chopped 1/2 cup diced onion 2 teaspoons bottled garlic blend 1 teaspoon poultry seasoning 2 12-ounce jars Heinz chicken gravy 1 store bought rotisserie chicken, skin and bones removed, meat cut into bite-size pieces 2 1/4 cups frozen petite peas Salt and pepper to taste 2 cups Bisquick baking mix 2/3 cup buttermilk 2 teaspoons finely chopped fresh flat leaf parsley Preheat oven to 350°. Spray a 9-by13-inch baking dish with cooking spray and set aside. In a large saucepan, heat butter over medium heat. Cook and stir chopped carrot and celery, onions, garlic and poultry seasoning until tender. Stir in gravy. Bring to a boil. Stir in chicken and peas, season to taste with salt and pepper. Transfer to prepared baking pan and set aside. For dumplings, in a medium bowl, stir together baking mix, buttermilk and parsley until moistened. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto casserole. Bake, uncovered, for 25 minutes. Cover with foil and bake about 10 minutes more or until dumplings; are cooked through. Serve hot.

Meatloaf 2 pounds lean ground beef 20 saltine crackers, crumbled 1 large egg, lightly beaten 1/2 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon yellow mustard 1 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon pepper 1/2 yellow onion, finely chopped In a stand mixer, mix the beef, cracker crumbs, egg, ketchup, mustard, salt, pepper and onion until just blended. Shape the mixture into two loaves and place side by side crosswise in a 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake the loaves for 1 hour or until they are browned. Transfer to a platter immediately and allow the loaves to cool slightly and firm up before slicing.

Annual Sweet Corn Festival set for Aug. 7-10 in Mendota MENDOTA — Tons of free, hot, buttered, delicious Del Monte sweet corn will be the highlight of the 67th annual Sweet Corn Festival to be held in Mendota on Aug. 7, 8, 9 and 10.

The Mendota Area Chamber of Commerce is preparing for the gigantic undertaking of hosting more than 60,000 visitors, who consume nearly 50 tons of sweet corn during the festival weekend.

PRINCETON — The Z Tour Bike Ride will ride in Princeton again on July 19. There are courses available for all levels of bikers, including 10 miles, 30 miles, 50 miles, 62 miles and 100 miles throughout the Princeton and Bureau County area.

The course features wellmarked bike routes, well-paved, low-traveled roadways, maps and cues for all routes, radiodispatched SAG until 3 p.m.

All riders must start between 6 to 9:30 a.m. with the 100 milers out by 8 a.m.

Reagan Run 5K

DIXON — Nearly 2,000 participants are expected for the annual Reagan Run 5K on Saturday, July 5 in downtown Dixon.

The traditional race that is part of Dixon’s Petunia Festival draws runners and walkers alike and has developed into the premier 5K race in the Sauk Valley area.

The race begins at 8 a.m. with the start line located just steps away from Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home, 810 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon. The unique course takes runners through downtown Dixon, across the Rock River, through wooded paths and finishes in Haymarket Square in the downtown. Racers continue to rave year after year about this classic and fun course that offers a changing landscape as you run.

The race is a benefit that helps several groups in Dixon including: The Dixon Athletic Boosters, Dixon Main Street, Dixon Park

District and the Dixon YMCA Strong Kids.

The event is named for James A. “Jimmy D” DeAngelo, who died in 1983 at the age of 37 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds to help cancer patients. Last year’s event raised $18,000 for area patients, and throughout the past 31 years, it has raised more than $638,000.

This year’s proceeds will benefit the Esophageal and Colon Cancer Center under construction at St. Margaret’s Hospital in Spring Valley. PRINCETON —The 2014 Jay Braida Golf Outing will be held July 12 at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton. The mother of two young children was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy. She is married to Matt Cochran.
