‘Take me out to the ball game’ There’s hot dogs. There’s apple pie. And then there’s American’s favorite summer pastime — baseball. Check out most any ball diamond in Bureau or Putnam counties, and you’re sure to see a lively game of baseball or softball being played. From the very youngest T-ballers to adult leagues, area residents can always find a good game in the area to enjoy. While it will be obvious the players on the field, in the batters’ box and in the dugout are enjoying themselves, you’ll also be treated to the cheers from proud parents, grandparents and others in the crowd — sitting on bleachers or in lawn chairs, who are embracing summer’s favorite hometown game. Most baseball fields also include a concession stand, where game-goers and players can find a great snack to enjoy. Proceeds from concession stand sales usually go back into the local baseball/softball programs. So as the official beginning of summer gets underway, plan to take in a few area baseball/softball games. Cheer for the home team ... and the other team as well. RVP announces casting call

Terrance Simien

Terrance Simien & the Zydeco Experience Band will perform July 3 on Princeton’s Main Street PRINCETON — One of the world’s great Zydeco artists, Terrrance Simien, and his Zydeco Experience Band will make a return appearance in a free downtown street party in Princeton on Friday, July 3, from 5 to 8 p.m. An eighth generation Louisiana Creole, Simien received his second Grammy Award last year. Although steeped in traditional Zydeco music — an upbeat blend of Cajun, Creole, blues, jazz and soul — Simien and his band also weave in other musical genres. In their Princeton performance last summer, they gave a crowd a taste

of Dylan, The Band, and Peter, Paul, and Mary and Pete Seeger (with whom Simien had performed not long before Seeger’s death). Simien has also collaborated with the likes of Fats Domino, Sarah Vaughn, and Randy Newman. Simien has been a regularly featured performer at the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Following their Princeton appearance, Simien and the Zydeco Experience Band will head to west suburban Chicago for the American Musical Festival held over the Fourth of July. For more than 30 years, Simien and his band have

performed more than 7,000 concerts in more than 45 countries, including — under the sponsorship of the U.S. State Department — being the first Zydeco band to appear in Cuba (2006). In late July, also under the auspices of the State Department, Simien and the band will take off on a month-long tour performing in Russia and Ukraine. For the Princeton event, the block of South Main Street from Peru to Marion will be closed to auto traffic. Among local businesses selling food and drink will be Four and Twenty Café, Kramer’s Kitchen and Fitz-

gerald’s. Those attending are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. In case of rain, the performance will be moved to the banquet room in Fitzgerald’s lower level. H E N R Y — River Valley Players Dinner Theatre will hold auditions for “Church Basement Ladies” at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 28, and Tuesday, June 30, at St. John XXIII Community Center. The show will be performed Oct. 17-18 and 23-25. The cast includes four women and one man. Female roles are for ages 19-72, and the male role is for age 40-50. Those auditioning should prepare a song. A pianist will

be provided. Those audition should be prepared to do a cold reading, a Minnesota accent is preferred. Those auditioning may be asked to sing a selection from one of the songs from the shows. Rehearsals will be held weekly during July through mid-August, with flexibility around vacations and the RVP children’s production. Rehearsals will be held three times a week mid-august until tech rehearsals start Oct. 4.

Character descriptions Vivian Snustad: A 60-70 year old widow. She is the most conservative of the ladies and the matriarch of the kitchen. She is the one who makes sure the food tastes good before leaving the kitchen and she is the one who washes the dishes. Her duties are well defined, by her. She sits at the center work table on a stool, almost a throne, where she commands the work of the day. Her word is not to be tested and her decisions are final. Karin Engelson: She is 40-45 years old and is second in line to take over the kitchen. Her cooking is fabulous. She is neat and tidy in appearance and quite pretty in a very conservative way, similar to Jackie Kennedy. She senses the world is about to change because she listens to her daughter, Singe, who without her influence on Karin’s life might be as rigid as Snustad. Mavis Gilmerson: She is her late 50s and is a farmer’s wife and grandmother. She is not afraid of work and can fix anything mechanical as well as do the books. She is the most physical comedienne of the three ladies because of her jump in and work attitude. She appears rather disheveled even when dressed up for a wedding. She is somewhat butch. Singe: Karin’s daughter who has just started college at the University of Minnesota. She comes home to visit often and loves working with her mother in the kitchen. She is 18 or 19 years old and ready to make her mark in the world. She represents change. Not only the change the church was going through in 1965, but the change the country was beginning to go through at that tie. She would never really become a hippie, but she will like the styles once they are introduced at Sears in Minneapolis. She is pretty like her mother and very sweet but not afraid to challenge Snustad and speak her mind in a respectful way. Pastor E.L. Gunderson: He is the same age as Karin, but he just married a young wife. He is goaded by the fact he comes from a family of pastors and his brother, no he, inherited his father’s church down the road. He is a bit competitive and finds he can truly relax in the kitchen. He has a very friendly and intimate relationship with God and he knows the church runs the best when the kitchen is happy.

The idea is to form a type of mentoring program where the older children help the younger children to keep reading all summer long and possibly continue into the next school year. The success and feasibility of this program would depend on the number of children, both younger and older who would sign up for the program. I have had several readers request a reprint of this recipe: With rhubarb in season, now’s the time to come up with some good recipes to use all the rhubarb in your garden or the rhubarb given to you by friends and/or family. Mmmmmm ... sounds good.

Rhubarb Strawberry Pie 4 cups rhubarb 2 1/2 tablespoons flour 1 cup sugar 1 3-ounce package strawberry Jell-O 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 tablespoons margarine Pinch of salt Mix flour, sugar, Jell-O and salt together; add the egg. 3 cups chopped fresh or frozen rhubarb 2 medium tart apples, peeled and chopped 1 egg 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup maple syrup 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/2 cup packed brown sugar Dash of salt 1/2 cup cold butter, cubed In a bowl, combine the rhubarb, apples, egg, sugar, syrup, nutmeg and cinnamon. Pour into a greased 2-quart baking dish. In another bowl, combine the flour, brown sugar and salt. Cut in butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle over fruit mixture. Bake at 350° for 35 to 50 minutes or until bubbly.

Cut into bars. Store in the refrigerator.

1 3/4 cups graham cracker crumbs, divided 3 tablespoons butter, melted 1 cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 4 cups diced fresh or frozen rhubarb 1 3-ounce package raspberry or strawberry gelatin 1 8-ounce carton frozen whipped topping, thawed 1 1/2 cups miniature marshmallows 2 cups cold milk 1 3.4-ounce package instant vanilla pudding mix In a small bowl, combine 1 1/2 cups cracker crumbs and butter. Press mixture into a greased 13-by-9-inch baking dish. Bake at 350° for 10 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool on a wire rack. In a large saucepan, combine the sugar, cornstarch and rhubarb. Bring to a boil, cook and stir for 2 to 3 minutes or until thickened and rhubarb is tender. Remove from the

Root Beer Float Cake Linda Moreno 1 package white cake mix 1 1/4 cups root beer 1/4 cup canola oil 2 eggs Frosting 2 envelopes of Dream Whip 1 cup root beer In mixing bowl, combine cake mix and 1 1/4 cups root beer. Beat for 2 minutes, add eggs and oil. Beat for 2 more minutes. Pour into greased 9-by-13-inch pan. Bake at 350° for 30 to 35 minutes or until done. Cool completely. For the frosting: Combine 2 envelopes of Dream Whip and 1 cup root beer. Beat until blended. Frost cooled cake. Store cake in refrigerator. Very good. LASALLE — The Illinois Valley Community Hospital will host a tennis classic July 3-5 at the new LaSalle-Peru High School athletic complex located on Airport Road in LaSalle. The matches will begin between 8 and 9 a.m. each morning to accommodate 4th of July plans. There will be two divisions, a junior and adult division. In the junior division there will be two age groups: 13 and under and 17 and under. The event will have men and women’s singles and doubles, junior boys and girl’s singles, and adult mixed doubles. Awards will be given to first and second place in the main draw and consolation in each division. There will also be a prize for the best dressed mixed doubles team. The 16th Annual Reagan 5K Run is on Saturday, July 4, in downtown Dixon. The race begins at 8 a.m. at the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home at 810 S. Hennepin Ave. The race is a Petunia Festival tradition. Panther Stomp The annual End of the Year activity at Bradford CUSD #1 for the last few years has been the Panther Stomp. It was a 5K race that raised money for St. Jude Research Hospital in honor and memory of two former Bradford students, Andrew Wall, who lost his battle with cancer, and Tayler Gage who continues to fight his battle. This year the stomp was renamed to: Remember and Hope Andrew Wall and Tayler Gage Panther Stomp. Instead of a 5K race, there was an opening ceremony on the Bradford track, a 2 mile run/walk, an 800, 400, & 100 meter run, and a 50 yard dash. While the races were being run, there were fun stations for all the students to participate in on the infield of the track. Money was raised by selling T-shirts and collecting entry fees for the track events. The approximate total raised was just under $900, with an added donation by the Wall family of $1000. All monies will be sent to St. Jude Research Hospital in honor and remembrance of Andrew and Tayler.
