Where’s the beef?

That question can easily be answered this Friday, June 24, as the annual Beef and Ag Festival rolls into Princeton. The event begins around 4:30 p.m. and runs through 9 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Park on Princeton’s South Main Street.

Event-goers will find plenty of food and fun during this evening event, including those great rib-eyes and beef hot dogs prepared by the Bureau County Cattlemen. Also on the menu that evening are mushrooms, compliments of the Princeton Lions Club. And what great meal would be complete without a sweet ending? Enjoy a slice of pie (or heck, buy the whole pie) baked by the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) from St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton; Sisler’s Ice Cream will also be sold by the Cattlemen’s group.

Children will enjoy a kiddie pedal pull and a children’s petting zoo.

Around 4:30 to 5 p.m., you’ll want to check out the parade of antique tractors at the Bureau County Courthouse Square/Soldiers and Sailors Park.

At about 5:45 p.m. on Friday, the Bureau County Farm Bureau Foundation will award its annual scholarships to area winners. New this year is another award — the AgVocat Award — given to an advocate of agriculture and set to be awarded to a family or individual who has made an impact on Bureau County agriculture through leadership and service.

At 6 p.m., the Neverly Brothers will take the stage for a free concert under the stars. “The Neverly Brothers: A Rock n’ Roll Evolution - from Elvis to The Beatles!” is a concert that recreates the birth, near death and resurrection of rock n’ roll.

Event-goers should bring their lawn chairs or blankets to enjoy the concert. Plan to spend the entire evening.

‘Pies in the Park’ St. Louis’ CCW prepares for its annual Beef Day pie sale

PRINCETON — If you’ve noticed a cloud of flour dust over the city of Princeton, there’s a good reason for it.

OK, everybody knows the Beef and Ag Festival, set for Friday, June 24, on the lawn of Soldiers and Sailors Park, is all about entertainment and those wonderful rib-eye sandwiches and beef hot dogs prepared by the Bureau County Cattlemen.

But what’s a delicious and tender piece of meat without a sweet ending?

Enter the Council of Catholic Women (CCW) from St. Louis Catholic Church in Princeton.

For the third year, the CCW is gearing up for its annual pie sale, which begins the same time the other festivities start at the Beef and Ag Day Festival — around 5 p.m. and continues until those pies are gone.

Sara Lee and Marie Callender don’t have a chance to compete with the homemade pies the CCW will sell that evening.

Buy a slice ... or heck, just buy the whole pie ... the proceeds from this popular fundraiser help the church and the community.

The last two years, the money raised went toward an enlarged and updated kitchen

at Harkrader Hall, which is used by many throughout the community.

But don’t wait until the end of the night to select your pie. The first year, the CCW sold out the nearly 70 pies they brought to the event. Last year, just under 100 pies were bought by those with a sweet tooth.

“Everybody does one or generally two pies,” said Rita Tracey, who coordinates and chairs the event with Dot Hammitt and Mary Harmon. “We probably have 50 ladies participating (baking). Most all will have homemade (pie) crusts, and a lot of the pies have home-grown fruit that is hand-picked.” Because of the weather, no cream pies will be sold.

Tracey reminded event-goers the Bureau County Cattlemen will be selling Sisler’s Ice Cream at the event, which would pair nicely with the CCW’s homemade pies.

Besides all those busy bakers, Tracey said many others from the church participate in the event, including those who make reminder calls to the bakers and those who help sell the pies on Friday night.

So by Saturday morning, that cloud of flour dust will have settled ... most of it in the stomachs of those attending the annual Beef and Ag Festival.

‘We all scream for ice cream’ Customer Appreciation Day is June 30

PRINCETON — If you’ve ever ridden a BPART (Bureau Putnam Area Rural Transit) bus anywhere, chances are you’ve had the opportunity kick back, relax and enjoy the scenery, while leaving the driving to the capable hands of those behind the wheel.

BPART busses can be seen throughout the tri-county area of Bureau, Putnam and LaSalle counties. To help finance the service, which is used by a multitude of folks of all ages for a variety of transportation needs, advertising on the busses helps pay to reduce the costs of travel for those who use this service. One of those advertisers is Grandma Rosie’s Sweet Treats, a local ice cream eatery which also serves sandwiches and a variety of other treats.

Grandma Rosie’s co-owner Jason Judd said he’s been happy with the advertisements on the BPART busses. He said it is “a win-win” endeavor for his store, as well as BPART. With that in mind, Judd and his co-owner wife, Jennifer, and BPART have created a Grandma Rosie’s/BPART Customer Appreciation Day. The first one is set for Thursday, June 30, with more to follow.

According to BPART’s Transportation Director Mick Johnson, “Anyone who schedules a ride with BPART that day can go to Grandma Rosie’s for a free, small ice cream cone or a free small sundae, compliments of Grandma Rosie’s.”

Anyone wishing to take advantage of this fun-filled and tasty treat just has to call BPART by noon on Wednesday, June 29, and schedule a pick up. BPART will happily pick you up free of charge, take you to Grandma Rosie’s for your free treat, and then shuttle you back home. The offer is open to individuals, nursing homes ... anyone in the Princeton city limits.

“We are trying to promote local businesses (with the advertising on our busses). We hope to be able to help local businesses generate some income. It’s also a way to help us get our (ridership) numbers up (at BPART). It’s a double-edged sword that’s cutting for the good. We all are generating customers,” Johnson said.

BPART is a division of Gateway Services and works primarily in Bureau and Putnam counties, while also assisting LaSalle County. Rides on BPART are open to all ages to and from any location in Bureau or Putnam counties.

Nominations wanted for 40 under Forty

OGLESBY — The Illinois Small Business Development Center at Illinois Valley Community College is seeking nominations of individuals under the age of 40 who are working to make positive contributions, advance their careers and contribute their time to the community.

The annual 40 Under Forty Award recognizes leaders, business owners and community volunteers who make the community a better place to live and work.

Bubble art blows into Princeton Public Library PRINCETON — Tuesday, June 28, and Thursday, June 30, are going to be busy summer reading days at the Princeton Public Library. On Tuesday at 10:30 a.m., prekindergarten children through-second graders can enjoy story time in the youth services area. Older siblings are welcome to join in for these stories using movement and interactive music.

Later that day at 6:30 p.m., there will be an opportunity for the older kids to join in on a life-sized game of Hungry, Hungry Hippos. Recommended for fourth grade through high school age youth, participants will scramble to consume more “hippopotamus food” than their competitors.

Then on Thursday, June 30, at 2:30 p.m., race worms at the library’s Amazing Library Worm Races. The library will supply the worms (though kids are welcome to bring their own) and see which one is the fastest. Kids can make a worm instead at the make-a-worm craft station. Prizes will be awarded for the winners, and gummy worms will be provided for all.

Later that day at 6:30 p.m. all ages are invited for a pottery wheel demonstration. Ann Crosby from Annie’s Little Pots in Princeton will throw some pots on the wheel and give everyone who wants to a chance to try their hand. The library recommends patrons dress for the occasion, since things could get a little a messy. These programs are free.

On Thursday, June 23, at 2:30 p.m., kids are once again in the lead with a “Kids Cook Healthy” event with Chef Monika. Monika Sudakov is co-owner of the Chestnut Street Inn in Sheffield and has a background in cultural anthropology. She specializes in Mediterranean cuisine and the value of flavorful, healthy means using locally-sourced ingredients.

SPRING VALLEY — The University of Illinois Extension will do a Wellness Wednesday Series at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library which is a free program to participants. Each class will be presented by Extension educator Susan Glassman, and recipe samples will be served. Learn some new ways to plan and prepare tasty, healthy summertime foods while keeping the kitchen cool. Each class is from 4 to 5 p.m. The last class will be “Farmers Market Fresh; Cooking with Fresh Vegetables” on Wednesday, July 13. Call the Extension to register at 815-224-0889 by July 11.

LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library’s summer reading program started June 1. Enjoy fun activities, great stories and snacks this summer at the library. Story hours began Tuesday, June 21, and end on July 26. Story times for prekindergarten through third-graders will begin at 10:30 a.m., with fourth grade and older starting at 1:30 p.m.

Bring a friend and join the fun and earn prizes at the same time.

Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday which is an ongoing program at the library. Come and go as you like between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017. This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students.

The program will be conducted in the

same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — The Selby Township Library will hold its annual reading program in June. This year’s theme is “Read for the Win.” Kids ages 3 and up can start reading books and keeping track of their reading to earn prizes.

During the month of July, children will have a chance to participate in a variety of special programs including: Craft Day on July 5; Ag in the Classroom on July 12; Forest Park Nature Center on July 19; Game Day on July 26; and Library Olympics on Aug. 2. All programs will be on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

The last day to turn in books for prizes will be July 30. Prizes will be given out during the program on Aug. 2 and will be available for pickup through Aug. 13.

The library has announced the board meeting dates for the 2016-17 fiscal year. The board meetings are held on Mondays, except where noted, at 6 p.m. at the library. Meeting dates are: July 11, Aug. 8, Sept. 12, Oct. 11, (Tuesday); Nov. 14, December – no meeting, Jan. 9, 2017; Feb. 13, 2017; March 13, 2017; April 10, 2017; May 8, 2017; and June 12, 2017. All board meetings are open to the public.

On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling.

Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday; from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday; and from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday. The library has computers for patron usage, as well as copier, scanning and fax services.

OHIO — The library will be having its summer reading program this year again during the month of June. The program is held Wednesdays during the month of June at 2 p.m. There will be weekly activities and a month-long reading competition with prizes for the most books read.

LADD — Summer Reading Program registration is underway. The program continues through July 8.

Pre-school story times with Mrs. Dempsey will continue through the summer on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

The library will also be sponsoring its new “Perpetual Programs.” These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library any time patrons stop in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

Special activities this summer will include game time, Bingo for Books, Selfie Scavenger Hunt, Minecraft Unplugged, and an ice cream party.

The library will also sponsor an Adult Summer Reading Program this year. In addition, an adult coloring club meets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and an adult card club meets on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

IVFL sign-ups SPRING VALLEY — The Illinois Valley Youth Football League registration deadline in Spring Valley has been extended to Friday, July 1. Forms can be obtained at Heartland Bank & Trust in Spring Valley or by contacting Jack Boroski at 815-664-4577.

SCGC Jr. Golf

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Creek Golf Course is preparing for the 2016 junior golf season.

The junior league will be held Fridays, open to all IV golfers. Ages 6-8 will play five shortened holes; ages 9-11 will play nine shortened holes; and ages 12-13 and 14-18 will play nine holes.

There will also be skill building days open to all golfers July 11, July 20, July 29, Aug. 2 and Aug. 11 from 5 to 6:15 p.m.

PRINCETON — The Princeton High School football camp for boys entering grades 9-12 will be July 25-29. Times will be 8 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday and Tuesday, 5 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday and 8 to 10 a.m. on Thursday and Friday.

WALNUT — The Walnut 5K Run/Walk for ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) will be Saturday, July 2. The run/walk starts at 8 a.m. in front of the Bureau Valley North Junior High.

The entry fee is $15 if received by Friday, June 24; $20 after that date and on race day. T-shirts are guaranteed to all who register by June 24. Race day registration time is 6:45 to 7:45 a.m. at the tent located south of the school.

Trophies will be awarded to first-, second- and third-place overall male and female and medals will be award to the top three in age group (male and female); 15 age groups.

Ruck Challenge

PRINCETON — The inaugural Bureau County Metro Center Ruck Challenge will be Saturday, June 25.

Nick Davis, recreation coordinator at the Metro Center, described the Ruck Challenge as an obstacle course-like event that is a “group effort where everyone starts and finishes together, relying on the team throughout the way,” adding those under 150 pounds will wear a 15-pound ruck sack throughout the event, with those over 150 pounds wearing a 20-pound ruck sack.

Davis said participants sign up, but they don’t know where they’re starting until they receive an email from Davis on Friday, June 24. Participants will interact with nature and go against its obstacles by relying on each other.

The ruck challenge will be anywhere from four to six miles long and could take three to five hours to complete. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing they’re not afraid to get dirty, and the only way to prepare is to expect the unexpected.

The Metro Center Ruck Challenge costs $20 per participant, and registration forms can currently be found on the Metro Center Facebook page, with a link on the Metro Center website coming soon. Participants can sign up until 6 p.m. Friday, June 24.

“This is a challenge, not a race, so there is no first place,” Davis said. “We just want it to be a fun event where we better ourselves together.”

The Z Tour

PRINCETON — On Saturday, July 16, the Zearing

Child Enrichment Center will be sponsoring the sixth Z Tour Bike Ride, a bicycle road ride originating in Princeton and includes many surrounding communities. The event will begin at Zearing Park in Princeton and will include the registrant’s choice of a 10-mile, 30-mile, 50-mile, 65-mile (metric century) and 100-mile (century) ride on specified routes throughout Bureau County.
