Summer fun at Beef and Ag Festival Bureau County residents are encouraged to enjoy a great summer evening of fun, food and entertainment from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, June 20, when the Bureau County Cattleman’s Association once again sponsors its annual Beef and Ag Festival at Soldier and Sailors Park on South Main Street in Princeton. Since the traditionallyseen Decatur Park Singers have disbanded since last year’s performance at the Beef and Ag Festival, Heartland Bank and Trust will now bring country singer Mary Pfeifer to the stage Friday to sing the songs of legendary country music singer Patsy Cline. Other features for the evening include a tractor show at the courthouse circle, a bake sale provided by the St. Louis Catholic Church, fried mushrooms cooked by the Princeton Lions Club, and of course, the traditional favorite dinner options prepared by the Bureau County Cattlemen Association.

Potoka, one of Brookfield Zoo’s giraffes, will celebrates his first birthday as part of the first-ever World Giraffe Day on June 21.

Brookfield Zoo celebrates World Giraffe Day BROOKFIELD — Everyone is invited to join Potoka, one of Brookfield Zoo’s giraffes, on his first birthday and celebrate the firstever World Giraffe Day at Brookfield Zoo on the longest day of the year, June 21. Guests will party with Potoka and learn about the threatened status of giraffes and how to help protect them and their environment. The event, which takes place from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., will highlight how poaching and habitat loss are creating a decline in the world’s giraffe population.

The day kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a special giraffe Zoo Chat which will focus on how the Chicago Zoological Society, which manages the zoo, cares for its giraffes. From there, guests can head to Hamill Family Play Zoo, where kids will be making banners and birthday signs for Potoka.

At noon, everyone is invited to join in a parade that winds from Hamill Family Play Zoo to Habitat Africa!, the Savannah for Potoka’s birthday celebration. While kids display their birthday greetings, Potoka will receive a special birthday cake made from his usual diet of fruits and vegetables, including carrots serving as the candles. Another giraffe Zoo Chat will take place at 12:30 p.m. while Potoka enjoys his treat. The 3 p.m.

Zoo Chat will be in English and will be followed immediately by a Spanish version. The final Zoo Chat will take place at 5:30 p.m.

Throughout the day, giraffe interpretive items — including examples of their favorite foods, giraffe hides and examples of how feeders provide stimulating enrichment — will be on display by the giraffe waterhole. Interpretive staff will be on hand to explain to guests the various objects and answer questions.

In addition to supporting World Giraffe Day, the electric company provides Brookfield Zoo giraffes (and many other animals) with browse (leaves, twigs and branches from trimmed trees and shrubs). Each week, ComEd donates 40 to 50 cubic yards of browse that feeds the animals. One of the giraffes’ favorite trees is the sugar maple.

World Giraffe Day is free with general zoo admission, which is $16.95 for

adults and $11.95 for children ages 3-11 and seniors age 65 and over. Children 2 and under are free. Admission to Hamill Family Play Zoo is $2.50 for nonmembers and $1.25 for zoo members. Parking is $10.

Midsommar Music Festival returns to Bishop Hill June 21 BISHOP HILL — Bishop Hill’s Midsommar Music Festival will return Saturday, June 21, with a strong line-up of musical performers. Highlights of this all-day event include Main Stage performances, a Swedish Maypole celebration and Old-Fashioned Barn Dance.

Main Stage performances in the village park gazebo will begin at 11 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.

This year’s lineup includes the Bear Clan of Sweden, Jansson Five, Hammer & Pick, River Bend Bronze, and Black Hawk Pipes and Drums. The Swedish American Museum, located in Andersonville, Chicago, will have craft activities for children of all ages in the park as well.

Children will make a Midsommar wreath of paper to have on their head or a bird feeder to hang in a tree.

After the Main Stage performances are completed, the Maypole will be decorated with flowers.

Everyone is then invited to join the Maypole procession. Accordionist Ernie Sandquist will lead the procession. It will begin in the park and end at the Colony School where visitors can join in the Maypole dancing and have refreshments. Later that evening, there will be a barn dance at the Colony School with The Rusty Pickup String Band and caller Gail Hintze. Admission to the barn dance is $5 per person. Visitors can pick up a program for more details at the information booth in the park.

In addition, a traveling exhibit will be on display at the Bishop Hill State Museum. The Portrait of a Soldier exhibit is a traveling display of handsketched portraits of fallen service members from Illinois who have been killed since Sept. 11, 2001, in the Global War on Terror.

autobiography, an Oscarwinning film, and to Lynn herself — has journeyed from the poverty of the Kentucky hills to Nashville superstardom to her current status as an honest-to-goodness American icon.

OGLESBY — The city of Oglesby will host its annual Summer Fun Fest celebration June 26-29.

In conjunction with the festival, Saturday, June 28, has been designated as “Veterans and Military Recognition Day.” All active military and veterans are invited to wear uniforms, medals and military covers.

Located on the festival grounds near the Oglesby pool on East Walnut Street, festival attendees will be able to view the Fallen Heroes Memorial Wall along with military vehicles on display. In addition, Hines Hospital Mobile Health Care Unit will have a representative on hand to answer questions.

Patriotic groups will be playing on the festival grounds from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday. Beginning at noon, the Navy band, “Horizon,” a seven-piece contemporary music ensemble playing Top 40 hits, Classic Rock, Motown, Country, Funk and Jazz, will take the stage. This performance will be followed by music by the Illinois Army National Guard’s 144th Army Band at 1:30 p.m.

Closing out the afternoon will be “Permanent Party,” of the 182nd Wing of the Air National Guard from Peoria, who will play from 3 to 5 p.m.

Oglesby residents are encouraged to fly flags and decorate their homes in patriotic colors. Ogles-

by Mayor Donald Finley explains “We want to paint the entire town red, white and blue to pay tribute to our country and military while we celebrate together during Fun Fest.” Patriotic bunting and flag kits are currently available at Oglesby City Hall for a small fee. Mayor Finley asks city residents to leave the flags flying at least through July 4.

Along with the special recognition events on Saturday, the festival has much more to offer with a carnival, beer garden, Kids Party in the Park and a large lineup of nightly musical entertainment. A complete schedule of events is available at www.oglesbyfunfest.com.

In October 2005, while a student at Eastern Illinois University, Schilling decided to draw a portrait of every Illinois service member who has fallen during the Global War on Terror.

PRINCETON — Today, Thursday, June 19, Furry Friends Petting Zoo will be at 10:30 a.m. for the Paws to Read summer reading program.

Monday, June 23, the high school summer book club will meet at 1 p.m.

Also, the Monday children’s matinee movie will begin at 4:30 p.m. and feature a young Viking who doesn’t fit in with his hardfighting village until he strikes a friendship with a mysterious dragon.

The Monday Night Movie begins at 6:30 p.m. and features a newlywed journalist who gives his wife a puppy, which grows into a 100-pound dog. The dog loses none of its puppy energy or rambunctiousness, and its antics give the writer rich material for his newspaper columns.

Tuesday, June 24, the preschool story time begins at 10:30 a.m. and feature two separate sessions for up to age 4 (meet in the children’s area) and ages 5 and up (meet in Matson Meeting Room). Also Tuesday, an adult craft night will begin at 6:30 p.m. Participants will make stuffies (washcloth kitten and easy felt mouse). The program is for ages 8 and up. All materials will be supplied.

Wednesday, June 25, Meet the plays begins at 5:30 p.m. and will discuss “Into the Woods” and “As You Like It.” This is an opportunity to learn more about Festival 56’s upcoming summer productions.

Thursday, June 26, making balloon animals with Mr. Cinnamon begins at 10:30 a.m.

SPRING VALLEY — The Richard A. Mautino Library children’s department announces its 2014 Summer Reading Program Paws to Read. Projects for all age groups will be ongoing until July 24.

Monday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the first through third grades will meet, Tuesday 1:30-2 p.m. or 5:30-6 p.m., the prekindergarten through kindergarten (story time) group will meet, Wednesday from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m., the fourth through sixth grades will meet, and Thursday 5-6 p.m. the seventh through 12th grades will meet at the library. There will be reading, crafts and activities for the different groups to enjoy for the

summer.

Programming ends July 26 with the following week as a makeup week for those who have not finished the reading program.

On July 31, the library will have a scavenger hunt for Grades 4 and up. A parental waiver must be signed before the child may participate. Prizes will be given when weekly goals are met. Children completing the program will be awarded a trophy, and those unable to attend projects may still participate.

Also, the library is hosting an adult summer reading program. Each adult that wishes to participate will be given a reading log that they need to record six books that they have read during the summer.

For each book the patron will be asked to rate the book and give a few comments about the book. The deadline for turning in the reading log is Aug. 1, and then they will be entered in a prize drawing. There will be five winners for the reading program.

Summer Reading for the grade school children begins in July. The theme is Paws to Read. Please make plans to join the library on Wednesday afternoons at 1:30 p.m. starting July 9. But start reading now, every book read during the summer counts.

Just a reminder, the library has three binders full of coupons for exchange. Feel free to come in and see what’s in the binders or drop off any coupons not be using.

Expired coupons are sent to the men and women serving this country over seas, which are still valid to them.

Walnut Library has an ongoing book sale. Patrons can purchase a bag of books for a buck. The library also has old VHS tapes and audio books on tape. If you are into crafting, there are many crafts that can be made from the VHS and Audio Book tapes; A Buck a Bag. Come on in and grab a bag of goodies.

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library will be closed for vacation from June 23 to 28 and will resume regular hours on June 30.

The library is preparing to host its summer reading program, Paws to Read, during the month of July on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings from 9:30 to 11 a.m. There will be two age groups this year with those children ages 5-7 meeting on Tuesday mornings and children ages 8-11 meeting on Wednesday mornings. Fun activities are being planned with prizes, entertainment, contests, and of course, reading.

LADD — Ladd Public Library’s summer reading program, Paws to Read, has kicked off and will feature stories, craft projects, various games, activities and prizes throughout the summer. Patrons meet at the library each Monday.

Scheduling for the programs is as follows: Children entering prekindergarten or kindergarten will meet at 10 a.m.; children entering first- through third-grades will meet at 11 a.m.; and children entering fourth- through sixthgrades will meet at 1 p.m.

Upcoming special events at the library: Game time at 1 p.m. June 27. Check back for future events.

The library is also looking for items to use during the summer reading program: Gallon milk jugs, baby food jars and plastic lids, such as those on peanut butter jars. They are also accepting miscellaneous craft supplies to use during the programs.

A prime rib dinner will be served at approximately 5 p.m. at the golf club. The cost for golfing is $90 per person, which includes green fees, cart, gift for each golfer and dinner.

First-, second- and thirdplace winners in each flight will receive free rounds of golf at various

Secretary of State Jesse White, in cooperation with Bureau County Senior Center, is offering a “Rules of the Road” review course for all citizens in the Princeton area from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. June 20 at the Bureau County Senior Center, 16 W. Marion St., Princeton. The course is free to anyone who wishes to attend. The purpose of the course is to help participants pass the Illinois driver’s license rental examination.

MALDEN — The Feed Store and Watering Hole is no stranger to Bureau County residents. From its hearty home cooking to its popular communityoriented fundraiser events, the Malden-based restaurant has been satisfying customers for more than 20 years.

Popular cook Janice Woodford opened the doors to the business in May 1993. What started as just a one-room dining area, quickly turned into a spacious restaurant — complete with two dining rooms and a full bar.

Looking back, Woodford said cooking began as just something she liked to do at home. She had built a 20-year career as a hairdresser, but she had thoughts to one day open up her own restaurant.

When the opportunity arose, she took the chance and has been met with success ever since.

Her restaurant has been reviewed by places like the Chicago Tribune, Peoria Journal Star, and Sauk ValPhoto contributed ley News.

The Feed Store’s menu can be described as traditional American. There’s a little something to please any taste bud — whether it be chicken, pork, beef, pasta or pizza.

“We’re just good food, no gimmicks,” Woodford said.

After a satisfying main entree, the dessert menu is also sure to please with its variety of homemade deserts — from pies, carrot cake, cheesecake and more.

Aside from her expertise in cooking, Woodford is also known for her popular fundraisers hosted throughout the year.

For the third consecutive year, The Feed Store will host its Mingle on Main event during the last weekend in July. The event brings out a display of antique cars, tractors and motorcycles. It’s a great time to get out and about, check out what’s on display, enjoy music and see friends and family. The funds raised

at the event benefit a new organization each year.

“I think everybody should support a cause. I appreciate my family, my kids and their health, and it’s nice to help someone else who is needing it,” Woodford explained.

Also, The Feed Store is known for its event Ride with Ron, a memorial motorcycle ride for Woodford’s late husband who passed away in 2010.

shop, The Hog House, located next door to the restaurant. Woodford said when the shop was open, it was advertised that anyone was welcome to ride and dine.

“When you ride a motorcycle you have to have a destination. You’re usually riding to a point where you eat, so when we would ride together, we might ride to Wisconsin for lunch because you’re wanting to ride anyway,” she said.

For this reason, many motorcyclists from around the area and out of town are drawn to the restaurant.

The Feed Store gives riders a destination place where they can slip into a booth and feast on a hearty meal.

The Feed Store and Watering Hole has its own Facebook page, where photos of numerous menu items can be viewed, as well as the menu itself.

The restaurant’s hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Wednesday and Thursday; 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday.

On Wednesday nights, the restaurant serves a special homemade pizza, and on Saturday nights a prime rib special is served.

Tips to keep kids safe all summer (Family Features) Summer is a time of playground fun, camping, swimming and other outdoor activities. When kids are outdoors, their sense of adventure and curiosity soars, which can, unfortunately, lead to a higher risk of injuries.

In fact, according to the Safe Kids Worldwide organization, each year one in four children 14 years of age and younger will sustain an injury that requires medical attention. The good news is that many of these injuries are preventable by following a few simple tips and learning how to avoid accidents and injuries.

“We know kids are active, especially during the summer months,” said John Cinotto, chairman of the board of directors of Shriners Hospitals for Children. “At Shriners Hospitals for Children, we see patients every day with life-changing injuries caused by accidents.

We’re always working to help raise awareness that our medical experts are here to get young patients back on track to the childhood they deserve, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.

Here are some tips to help your family safely enjoy all the fun summer has in store.

Drive with care According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death and acquired disability for children and teens. These tips can help you and your children to stay out of harm’s way while in or around vehicles.

• Teach your children to buckle up every time they get into a car, regardless of the length of the car ride. Buckling children in age- and size-appropriate car seats, booster seats and seat belts dramatically reduces the risk of serious

and fatal injuries.

• Check around your parked car for children before you pull away.

Teach children to be aware of moving vehicles and to wait in safe areas where drivers can see them.

• Accompany young children when they get in and out of a vehicle. Hold their hands when walking near moving vehicles, in driveways and parking lots.

Mowing matters While it may seem like just a common household tool, thousands of children are injured in lawn mower accidents each year, some with severe effects.

• Teach children to never play on or around a lawn mower, even when it is not in use. They should never be permitted to walk along side, in front of or behind a moving mower.

• Children under 6 years of age should be kept inside the home while mowing.

Fire safety simplified Every hour, approximately 16 children are injured from fires or burns, according to the Safe Kids Worldwide organization.

Use these tips to keep your little ones safe around fireworks, grills and other heat sources: • Teach kids never to play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items up and away from young children.

• Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby when burning fires.

• To ensure a safe celebration, leave fireworks to the professionals.

• If your child is injured by fire or fireworks, immediately take them to a doctor or hospital.

Playground 101 The Centers for Disease Control revealed that

emergency departments treat more than 200,000 children ages 14 and younger for playgroundrelated injuries every year.

Before you let them play at the park or school playground, be sure they keep these precautions in mind: • Use appropriate and properly fitting safety equipment when participating in any sport, such as helmets and goggles, which can greatly reduce the risk of head and eye injuries.

• Take your children to playgrounds with shock absorbing surfaces.

Choose parks and playgrounds that are appropriate for their age. Check for hazards or broken equipment and continuously supervise your children while they are at play.

• Teach children to use playground and sports equipment properly.

• Remind children that pushing, shoving and crowding on the playground can result in accidents and injuries.

Make a safe splash While playing poolside may be a blast, the Safe Kids Worldwide organization also revealed that drowning is the leading injury-related cause of death for children between 1-4 years of age.

Fill your family’s summer days with these safe practices around the water: • Teach children to never go near or in the water without an adult present. Children and adults should never swim alone.

• Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or near any body of water.

• Always have your children wear a Coast Guard approved, properly fitting life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports.

Here are a few more recipes for the readers who want to cook for one or two people. It’s hard to cook for just a couple of folks, so I will try to offer some recipes that produce smaller servings. If you need to feed more than two, you can always double or triple these recipes.

Crispy Dijon Chicken 1/4 cup plain yogurt 1/2 teaspoon salt free herb seasoning blend 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 cup cornflakes crumbs 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese 2 bone-in chicken breast halves In a shallow bowl, combine the yogurt, seasoning blend, lemon juice and Dijon mustard. In another bowl combine the cornflake crumbs and Parmesan cheese.

Roll the chicken in yogurt mixture then in crumb mixture. Place in a greased 8-inch square baking pan. Bake, uncovered, at 350° for 35 to 45 minutes or until chicken juices run clear. Serves 2.

Toasted Angel Food Cake 1 tablespoon cream cheese, softened 2 slices angel food cake (3/4-inch thick) 1 to 2 teaspoons raspberry preserves 2 teaspoons butter or margarine, softened Confectioners’ sugar Spread cream cheese on one slice of cake, spread preserves on second slice.

Place slices together sandwich style.

Spread butter on outsides of cake. In a skillet over medium heat, toast cake on both sides until lightly browned and cream cheese is melted. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. Serve immediately. Serves 1.

Mini Sweet Potato Casserole 1 medium sweet potato 2 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted, divided 1 tablespoon raisins 1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel 1/8 teaspoon salt 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon Dash of ground nutmeg 2 tablespoons flaked coconut Place the sweet potato in a saucepan.

Cover with water. Bring to a boil, reduce heat. Cover and simmer for 30 to 40 minutes or just until tender. Drain. When cool enough to handle, peel the sweet

Macaroni Egg Salad 1 cup uncooked elbow macaroni 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 teaspoon sugar 1 teaspoon cider vinegar 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon prepared mustard Dash of pepper 1 celery rib, chopped 2 tablespoons chopped onion 1 hard cooked egg, chopped Cook macaroni according to package directions. Drain and rinse in cold water. In a bowl, combine the mayonnaise, sugar, vinegar, salt, mustard and pepper. Stir in celery and onion. Fold in macaroni and egg. Refrigerate until serving. Serves 2.

Tater Tot Taco Salad 2 cups frozen miniature tater tots 1/2 pound ground beef 2 tablespoons taco seasoning 1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese 1/4 cup sliced ripe or stuffed olives 1 cup shredded lettuce 2 tablespoons taco sauce 1/4 cup sour cream Bake tatter tots according to package directions. Meanwhile, in a large skillet, cook beef over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Stir in taco seasoning. Divide tater tots between two serving plates or bowls. Top with taco mixture, cheese, olives, lettuce, taco sauce and sour cream. Serves 2.

Motocross Sunset Ridge MX WALNUT — Another exciting race weekend will come June 21-22 to the nationally recognized Sunset Ridge MX in Northern Bureau County as the best of the best youth motocross racers vow for their chance to advance to the AMA Amateur National Motocross Championships at the legendary Loretta Lynn Ranch in scenic Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

Spectators are always welcome at Sunset Ridge MX, located just 4 miles south of Normandy on 1100 East. Spectator gates open at 6 a.m. on Saturday, June 21 and Sunday, June 22 with racing both days beginning at 10 a.m.

Running Toluca 5K TOLUCA — The seventh annual Double Diamond Dash 5K Run/Walk will be held Saturday, June 21 at the Toluca ball park, starting at 8 a.m. Race-day registration and pre-registration pickup will be held from 6:30-7:30 a.m. with the race to start at 8 a.m.

OGLESBY — The third annual Art Sarver run/walk will be held June 28.

The race will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the Oglesby Elks Lodge on 800 E. Walnut St. and will include three overall male and female winners. The top male and female will receive a plaque, and the first three finishers in each age division will receive an award.

Dixon’s Petunia Festival draws runners and walkers alike.

The race begins at 8 a.m. with the start line located just steps away from Ronald Reagan’s Boyhood Home, 810 S. Hennepin Ave., Dixon. The unique course takes runners through downtown Dixon, across the Rock River, through wooded paths and finishes in Haymarket Square in the downtown. Racers continue to rave year after year about this classic and fun course that offers a changing landscape as you run.

Jimmy D Golf Outing

SPRING VALLEY — The 32nd annual Jimmy D Golf Outing will be held July 13 at Spring Creek Golf Club and Deer Park Country in Oglesby. The event is named for James A. “Jimmy D” DeAngelo, who died in 1983 at the age of 37 after fighting cancer. It was the wish of Jimmy and his family to raise funds to help cancer patients. Last year’s event raised $18,000 for area patients, and throughout the past 31 years, it has raised more than $638,000. This year’s proceeds will benefit the Esophageal and Colon Cancer

PRINCETON —The 2014 Jay Braida Golf Outing will be held July 12 at Chapel Hill Golf Course in Princeton. The event is sponsored by friends and family of Jay Braida, who passed away June 19, 2005, from melanoma. He was an avid golfer and sports fanatic.

The event was created in 2010 to help area residents in need. There is a need for hole and T-shirt sponsors.

This year’s recipient is Abbie Cochran of Princeton, poms coach at Princeton High School and an instructor at Main Street Dance Academy in Princeton. The mother of two young children was recently diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer and underwent a bilateral mastectomy.

She is married to Matt Cochran.

All golfers must preregister for the four-person scramble. Cost is $60 which includes dinner. Check-in is 10:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon. GRANVILLE — The Putnam County High School basketball program will be hosting a Youth Basketball Camp on July 6, 9-12 for students entering grades 1-9.
