Farm-fresh produce at the Farmer’s Market PRINCETON — The Princeton Farmer’s Market, held on the lawn just south of the Prouty Building on Main Street, is a cook’s dream, especially for those who don’t have their own gardens.

The event is held every Saturday morning and Tuesday afternoon. Area vendors bring a variety of fresh seasonal produce, baked goods, honey, flowers and more. Those same vendors are ready and willing to tell event-goers how to best use some of the more obscure vegetables they produce locally on their own farms. A host of more common vegetables are also available.

From strawberries to watermelons, from cucumbers to tomatoes, from green beans to cabbage and Brussel sprouts, you’re sure to find something at the Princeton Farmer’s Market to please your taste buds. The baked goods are fresh and sweet — tempting even the most rigid dieter.

For the best selection, shoppers will want to arrive early. Saturday hours are 8:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. On Tuesday, the Princeton Farmer’s Market is from 3 to 5:30 p.m.

Eleven years of miles and miles of sales for More on 34 More on 34 has become an annual weekend of treasure hunting in the Illinois countryside along Route 34 for bargain hunters, antique buyers and collectors from across the United States. Eleven years, 20 communities, more than 100 miles across five counties sets the stage for the granddaddy linear yard sale in Northern Illinois on Father’s Day weekend, June 17 and 18.

You never know what you will find along the way: yard sales, antique shows, craft shows, flea markets and farmer’s markets in communities from Galesburg to Aurora. Sales can be found in parking lots, in city parks and in many yards all along Route 34. Sales typically run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., but some open earlier or remain open later.

A few sellers even begin their sales on Thursday and continue through Sunday.

Cathy Foes, Henry County Tourism Bureau director, shares this advice: “Most of the sales are held on U.S. Highway 34, but don’t be afraid to venture off the route when you see one of the many signs that says ‘barn sale this way.’ I recently traveled to a seller’s barn located 2.5 miles off U.S. Highway 34 on the Van Orin blacktop.

All I can say is, ‘Oh my goodness.’ He and his wife have a lifetime collection of unique vintage farm, gas, and oil memorabilia plus an adorable pig collection.” Foes went on to say, “I met some locals, shot some video, and took photos for the More on 34 social media promotion and even bought a treasure. I’ve been involved for 10 years with More on 34, and it is a great way to experience the Illinois countryside.

There is something for everyone in the family, let alone the memories to be made.”

Participating communities along the way are Galesburg, Wataga, Oneida, Altona, Galva, Kewanee, Neponset, Sheffield, Wyanet, Princeton, Dover, LaMoille, Mendota, Earlville, Leland, Somonauk, Sandwich, Plano, Yorkville and Aurora. Sandwich is a town already known for antique items with more than 20 shops downtown, but Timbercreek Inn and Suites will have vendors available outside selling their wares.

Make a stop in Earlville at the Methodist Church fundraiser; all sales are freewill donations and, while there, have a slice of home-baked pie. They sell out

every year.

Bureau County Fairgrounds in Princeton will have a two-day sale on Friday and Saturday with gates opening at 8 a.m. Stop there early for great deals on new and used items, antiques and collectibles. Admission is free.

New for 2016 in Kewanee is the Hog Capital BBQ Challenge, a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event.

Kewanee Chamber of Commerce and Sullivan’s Foods are sponsors of the event held at Sullivan’s Food parking lot. Mark Mikenas, KCC director, states More on 34 attendees will be able to purchase great tasting BBQ from award-winning vendors (competitors will not be selling product) as well as enjoy a beer garden and music Friday night in Cerno’s beer tent. Friday night will also be the popular Lil Piggy Que where kids get a chance to cook and compete just like the big boys. On Saturday, the Backyard Competition starts up right alongside the traveling pros. BBQ turn in and judging starts at noon with awards being presented at approximately 3 p.m.

It’s the second year for Patchy’s Craftapalooza, an outdoor craft, vendor and flea market set up at Wethersfield School on the south end of Kewanee, Friday from noon to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., with more than 50 vendors.

Organizer Amber Patch-Troxell notes, “Local and out-of-state crafters that make fabulous homemade barn wood and wood items will be selling their creations. We also have many booths with handmade every day items such as pot and bowl holders, little girls’ bows and tutus.”

Money raised from Craftapalooza benefits more than 1,000 youngsters from Kewanee and area communities by providing Christmas gifts to those who otherwise would have nothing under the tree. The effort was begun in 2009 in memory of Amber’s brother, Schuyler, who was killed in Afghanistan in 2009.

On the southern part of the route toward Galesburg, Galva’s America Legion will have vendors set up on the south end of town. Meander over to Altona for Amber Creek Antiques with treasures inside and out. A must-stop is Wataga where the park plays host to more than 40 vendors. Hawthorne Craft

On Friday, June 17, have lunch in the park, available from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Soldiers and Sailors Park, across from the courthouse in Princeton (just two blocks south of Routes 6 and 34 on Main Street) or stop at the Wyanet Locker for a ribeye sandwich, hot dog or pork chop for lunch on Friday and Saturday.

Stay in Princeton on Friday night and enjoy the Summer Solstice. From 4 to 8 p.m. at participating merchants in downtown Princeton, there will be food and wine tasting. Pick up a passport and free gift at the Princeton Chamber of Commerce, 435 S. Main St. or juniper and mae, 930 N. There is a two-day garage sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Bureau County Fairgrounds, 811 W. Peru St. in Princeton. Free admission, concession stand, restrooms, lots of vendors.

On Saturday there’s a fun event the men will enjoy if they are getting a little “shopped out.” The eighth annual Old Wheels Car Show will be held at the First Lutheran Church, 116 N. Pleasant St. in Princeton from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., including antique cars, trucks, tractors, motorcycles, music and great food, a fun train ride for the kids, a bake sale and grilled sandwiches.

The newest entertainment venue in Bureau County is the Psycho Silo Saloon which is at the intersection of Route 40 and Route 34. There will be all-day entertainment there on Saturday featuring a model photography shoot, car and motorcycle show and vendor show. The Psycho Silo is located on Routes 6 and 34 between Sheffield and Wyanet in Langley. The Higgins Bros. Band returns to the Psycho Silo Saloon from 2 to 6 p.m. Saturday. Join the party with one of the area’s finest rock bands, playing a music variety of country, blues, classic rock, etc. from ‘50s to present. The Higgins Bros. Band is a four-piece rock band out of Tonica/ Oglesby.

PRINCETON — At 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 22, retired history enthusiast and Princeton resident John Purvis will present a program called “Off the Beaten Path in Illinois” which will revisit the Henry Thomas Memorial, Matson Corners, The Witness Tree, the First State Bank in Manlius, country schools, The Cannon in LaMoille, cemeteries at Heaton’s Point and St. Paul’s, the Elijah Philips Memorial and more.

Summer reading registration will be June 13 through June 18.

On Thursday, June 16, adults are invited to Play to Win Bingo at 6:30 p.m. The games will test patrons’ knowledge of best-selling books and the services and materials offered at the library. Prizes will be awarded.

At 10:30 a.m. Friday, June 17, the youth summer reading program kicks off with a special Ben’s Bubble Show. Sponsored

by Dr. Timothy Puhr, a dentist, the event mixes art and science as Ben Jiminez creates bubbles galore: bubbles within a bubble, smoke bubbles, bubble sculptures, spinning belt bubbles, square bubbles, and for his finale actually puts a child inside a bubble.

Next week, the Summer Reading Program at the Princeton Public Library starts off with the wave of a green flag. Tuesday morning, June 21, at 10:30 a.m., Summer Reading Storytime has a special guest: Ronald McDonald. Bring Pre-K through second graders and their siblings in for the fun. Later that evening at 6:30 p.m., parents can join their families by participating in Minute-to-Win-it Family Game Night.

Teams will have 60 seconds to complete challenges involving household items. This event is sponsored by Dr. Elvin M. Krabill, a dentist, and is recommended for second grade and older children.

On Thursday, June 23, at 2:30 p.m., kids are once again in the lead with a “Kids Cook Healthy” event with Chef Monika.

Monika Sudakov is co-owner of the Chestnut Inn in Sheffield and has a background in cultural anthropology. She specializes in Mediterranean cuisine and the value of flavorful, healthy means using locally sourced ingredients.

SPRING VALLEY — Summer reading 2016 registration is taking place during the week of June 13-18 in the Children’s Library at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library. This year’s theme is “Read for the Win,” and it will be a six-week program.

The Children’s Library is closed on Fridays.

LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library’s summer reading program started June 1. Enjoy fun activities, great stories and snacks this summer at the library.

Story hours will begin Tuesday, June 21, and end on July 26. Story times for prekindergarten through third graders will begin at 10:30 a.m., with fourth grade and older starting at 1:30 p.m. Bring a friend and join the fun and earn prizes at the same time.

On Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m., nationally-renowned storyteller Beth Horner will entertain with stories and music. This program is for all ages. There is limited seating,

so those who plan on attending should let the library know.

Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday which is an ongoing program at the library. Come and go as you like between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The Selby Township Library has announced the Summer Reading Program: “Read for the Win!” All kids ages 3 and up are invited to participate. The program will include activities like Ag in the Classroom, the Forest Park Nature Center, craft day and Library Olympics. Children will be encouraged to read books to earn points.

Children who earn enough points will receive prizes at the end of the program.

TISKILWA — Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class.

Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting empty inkjet cartridges for recycling. Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m.

OHIO — The library will be having its summer reading program this year again during the month of June. The program is held Wednesdays during the month of June at 2 p.m. There will be weekly activities and a month-long reading competition with prizes for the most books read.

LADD — Summer Reading Program registration is underway. The program continues through July 8.

Pre-school story times with Mrs. Dempsey will continue through the summer on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

The library will also be sponsoring its new “Perpetual Programs.” These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library any time patrons stop in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

Special activities this summer will include game time, Bingo for Books, Selfie Scavenger Hunt, Minecraft Unplugged, and an ice cream party.

The library will also sponsor an Adult Summer Reading Program this year. In addition, an adult coloring club meets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and an adult card club meets on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Naper Nights gets ready to rock the ‘Burbs’ NAPERVILLE — Naper Nights sets the stage with non-stop music and fun during three summer weekends in June, July and August. Kicking off the six-concert series Friday, June 17, with a tribute to America’s rock and roll roots is The Fortunate Sons, a Creedence Clearwater Revival tribute band that prides itself on recreating the sound and look of CCR. “What people get when they see us is by far the world’s most accurate tribute to CCR back in their prime,” said The Fortunate Sons drummer and manager Jeff Philippe. “The songs have a lot to say, but are short and upbeat.

We genuinely still listen to and enjoy these tunes even after all this time.”

They are followed by headliner Mr. Blotto with a set featuring the music of The Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead and The Band. With over 2,400 shows and 25 years to their name, this Chicago-based jam band draws from a

300-plus song list.

“We are thrilled to book Mr. Blotto this year as their inspired playing has built a loyal fan base over their stellar 25-year career,” said Special Events Coordinator Adison Glick. “We knew from day one that Mr. Blotto would be a perfect fit for Naper Night’s theme ‘The History of Rock,’ because in addition to Mr. Blotto’s beloved originals, the band frequently pulls from a mammoth catalogue of jam band classics.”

He said a special set is scheduled to show off this cover side of Mr. Blotto, as the band intends to play a one-of-a-kind set of music highlighting the Allman Brothers Band, The Grateful Dead and The Band.

Paul Bolger, guitarist, vocalist and one of the founders of Mr. Blotto said, “I think our love of the music we get to play has kept us fresh, our set list fresh and our audience constantly surprised. I have to say also when you write a good song and put it in your set, you become the only place someone can hear it live so our originals are a big part of our success.”

On Saturday, June 18, Naper Nights revisits its rock and roll roots with two tribute bands that will play the most popular music of the last 50 years. Opening act Beggars Banquet is an authentic tribute to the Rolling Stones featuring all of their greatest hits performed in full costume.

The band has been performing

for over 14 years throughout the Midwest.

This year, fans of The Beatles’ music are in for a real treat.

Headliner American English will be playing the album, “Revolver,” in its entirety. You might remember songs like, “Taxman,” “Eleanor Rigby” and “Good Day Sunshine” and the rousing “Yellow Submarine.” This was also the first album ever recorded with “backwards” music used on the song “Tomorrow Never Knows.”

The album has been certified five times platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America.

Band members include Eric Michaels, who has been performing as Paul McCartney for 25 years, drummer Tom Gable, who has portrayed Ringo for 20 years, Young Hines as John Lennon, James Paul Lynch as George Harrison and Ken Zemanek as George Martin. They will also be wishing Sir Paul McCartney a happy 74th birthday (on his actual birthday, June 18) when American English plays a Wings tribute in honor of this extraordinary musician.

Gable said he loves playing the music of The Beatles and continues his ongoing research into the band and their songs.

“You become a professor and a student, all in one. You are always striving to capture something you missed, and you’re always learning something,” he said. “It’s trying to tap into the

magic of their music.”

He said “Revolver” was a groundbreaking album for The Beatles because it included pop music, but their horizons were growing. It remains one of the biggest selling albums of all time.

“We are fortunate to have the talent and the depth of musicianship in the band that allows us to do all of The Beatles music, from their early days to their solo careers,” he said.

Gable said the band enjoys playing in Naperville because it’s a progressive, trendy town and that Naper Nights concert-goers appreciate their music.

The Old Wheels Car Show A Brass Era antique to be featured at this year’s show

PRINCETON — This year’s Old Wheels Car Show is dedicated to the memory of one of its founders, Richard “Dick” Dorsch, and will include the presentation of a new vehicle at the show which he would have surely loved.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 18, at the First Lutheran Church in Princeton, the parking lot at the corner of Farnham and Pleasant Streets will once again be filled with classic and antique cars, motorcycles, trucks, tractors, music, food and fun for the whole family.

From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. there will be brats, hot dogs and drinks for sale, and the show will also be hosting a bake sale featuring a wide variety of homemade treats.

A popular attraction for children in attendance will be the brightly colored train ride that circles the block, as well as visits from the show’s costumed mascots.

All proceeds from the show will support mobile food pantries and the Riverbend Foodbank.

The many local vehicles regularly in attendance are always a pleasure to see, and while there are always some new additions, this

year will see the inclusion of a very special car.

Wyanet’s Tom Anderson will be bringing, and hopefully driving, his rare, recently completed 1910 Brush Runabout. What began five years ago as a pile of dirty old parts, with many of them missing, has been restored to all of its bright red, shiny brass glory.

“I’m hoping to be able to drive it to the show. I’ve had it out on the road, but there’s still some bugs to be worked out. Even if I have to trailer it, I’ll be there,” Anderson said.

Designed and built

by A.P. Brush, who also designed for Cadillac, these horseless carriages were manufactured between 1907 and 1913. 13,250 of the single cylinder autos were produced during this period, though only a small amount remain today.

They’re popular in Australia because the first car to drive across the continent was a Brush Runabout.

Advertised as an “Everyman’s Car,” the little runabouts sold for $485. Promoted as costing less to run than a horse, as well as lasting longer, being more reliable and requiring less care, the 10 horsepower autos helped usher in the automotive era with their

Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. The race begins and ends at Strouss Park.

A pancake breakfast will follow the race.

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Creek Golf Course is preparing for the 2016 junior golf season.

The junior league will be held Fridays beginning June 17, open to all IV golfers. Ages 6-8 will play five shortened holes; ages 9-11 will play nine shortened holes; and ages 12-13 and 14-18 will play nine holes.

There will also be skill building days open to all golfers July 11, July 20, July 29, Aug. 2 and Aug. 11 from 5 to 6:15 p.m.

PRINCETON — The inaugural Bureau County Metro Center Ruck Challenge will be Saturday, June 25.

Nick Davis, recreation coordinator at the Metro Center, described the Ruck Challenge as an obstacle course-like event that is a “group effort where everyone starts and finishes together, relying on the team throughout the way,” adding those under 150 pounds will wear a 15-pound ruck sack throughout the event, with those over 150 pounds wearing a 20-pound ruck sack.

Davis said participants sign up, but they don’t know where they’re starting until they receive an email from Davis on Friday, June 24. Participants will interact with nature and go against its obstacles by relying on each other.

The ruck challenge will be anywhere from four to six miles long and could take three to five hours to complete. Participants are encouraged to wear comfortable clothing they’re not afraid to get dirty, and the only way to prepare is to expect the unexpected.

The Metro Center Ruck Challenge costs $20 per participant, and registration forms can currently be found on the Metro Center Facebook page, with a link on the Metro Center website coming soon. Partic-

ipants can sign up until 6 p.m. Friday, June 24.

“This is a challenge, not a race, so there is no first place,” Davis said. “We just want it to be a fun event where we better ourselves together.”

The Z Tour
