Celebrating Old Glory To many, the sight of a United States flag blowing in the breeze is breathtaking. That flag, comprised of 13 red and white stripes and 50 white stars on a blue background, represents much to most, and if ever there was a symbol of patriotism, it is perhaps Old Glory as she waves proudly throughout our nation.

Tuesday, June 14, is Flag Day — a day meant to honor the United States flag and all it represents to each of us.

The history of Flag Day started as a simple celebration in a Wisconsin public school classroom in 1865, when a school teacher, B.J. Cigrand, arranged for students to observe June 14 as “Flag Birthday,” which at the time was the 108th anniversary of the official adoption of the Stars and Stripes. For the next several years, Cigrand continued to advocate the observance of “Flag Birthday” through the media and public speaking engagements.

While the Wisconsin celebration is believed to be the beginning of this observance which turned into a national celebration, others were instrumental along the way in creating our National Flag Day on June 14 every year. From another teacher in New York City to the Pennsylvania Society of Colonial Dames of America to various public officials across the country, perhaps it was Franklin K. Lane, Secretary of the Interior, who delivered an address on June 14, 1914, who said it best: “I am what you make me; nothing more. I swing before your eyes as a bright gleam of color, a symbol of yourself.”

Second Story becoming a first choice for area youth Games and free food attract sixth-graders through high-schoolers

PRINCETON — Second Story in Princeton, located above Johnson’s Carpet Shoppe at 1033 N. Main St., has become a popular place for sixth-grade through high school students to hang out with their friends.

On a Friday night, the youth facility averages 80-90 students where they can participate in a number of activities or just hang out with their friends in a safe environment. Sixth- through eighth-grade students are required to leave at 9:30 p.m. with high school students leaving by 11 p.m.

Dana and Jeff VanAutreve and Robin and Chris Robbins are the adults who coordinate Second Story.

Students can also come to Second Story on Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. where they can learn some craft-making skills and

hang out with their friends. About 20-30 students come to the facility on Tuesday nights.

The number of students attending the facility has increased since last September when a number of students asked to be open every Friday night instead of occasionally on Friday and Saturday nights.

Students committed to Second Story have also done community projects such as painting a city building and holding garage sales.

“We want kids to give back to the community,” said Dana VanAutreve. “We also have up to 10 students who come in early and stay late on those nights and to help on off days.”

A check-in system has been created for teens to come to the facility.

“We don’t want them running across the street and hanging out or loitering when they are supposed to be here,” she said.

Second Story was first established five years ago with concerts held there that mainly attracted 18- to 25 year olds.

“We wanted to have school-age kids here, so we started Fifth Quarter on Friday nights with 30-50 kids,” added VanAutreve. “Last winter, that number of kids coming here on Friday nights was consistently about 80.”

Students coming to Second Story can play video games, ping pong, air hockey, carpet ball (a fave of many), karaoke (huge hit), watch movies in the theater room and enjoy food every night it is open. In addition, board games can be played, spoons, card games and four square.

The VanAutreves had empty space above their store and heard complaints from their children about nothing to do in town.

“We felt driven to use that space for youth,” she said. “We have always been involved in youth groups. We have a great

group of kids who make it work, who are very respectful. They pitch in and help.

We also have wonderful adult volunteers who help us.”

The facility gets many monetary donations to buy food for students coming to Second Story.

“It is all free to the kids and will always be,” she said. “We get a large donation from Church Women United and small amounts from others. We appreciate them all because they eat a lot of food and drink a lot of drinks.”

Mostly Princeton students come to Second Story, with a dedicated group from Ohio plus Walnut and Tiskilwa students also attending.

“We aren’t trying to be their parents,” she added. “We want to give them a safe place to feel Jesus and to serve them. We want to help them make better choices in their life and to feel better about themselves.”

Dunk tanks and teachers were the main event at JFK Elementary’s Last Day of Fun Day on June 3. Students lined up for chances to drop their teachers and administrators into the dunk tanks. Students frequently showed incredible accuracy, and their classmates never failed to roar with approval and laughter.

Honor Flight fundraiser at Bishop Hill

BISHOP HILL — Honor Flight returns to Bishop Hill at 3-7 p.m. Sunday, June 12, with the community raising funds to send area veterans to Washington, D.C. Fortunate veterans who are chosen will visit memorials dedicated to honoring their sacrifices.

In the last five years, the community has raised more than $70,000 for the Quad Cities Chapter of the Honor Flight Network. Area veterans will be provided with a free trip to visit their memorial with priority given to survivors of World War II, Korean War

and any veteran with a terminal illness. Honor Flight Quad Cities operates on donations from organizations and individuals. Representatives from the Honor Flight organization will be there to answer questions and to accept applications.

The schedule begins with the barbecue rib dinner at 3 p.m. in the village park. Also, at 3 p.m., motorcycle riders can join up with the Illinois Patriot Guard and Legion Riders at the Galva American Legion and help them escort the flag to Bishop Hill. At 3:30 p.m., the

Illinois Patriot Guard and Legion Riders and other motorcyclists will arrive; at 4 p.m., there will be an invocation and then the Presentation of Colors by area VFW and American Legion groups.

There will be several speakers, including Representative Donald L. Moffitt from the 74th District and an Honor Flight representative. Shelley Kinzer of Bishop Hill will be providing patriotic music. Local Bishop Hill storyteller Brian “Fox” Ellis will also perform. A live auction provided by Stenzel Auction Service will include an official Chi-

cago Cubs umbrella, toy tractors from local dealers, gift baskets as well as locally made quilts, pottery, pies, and other items. There will be a military retreat at 1800 hours exactly (6 p.m.) with a 21-gun salute and taps. Golf cart shuttle services, provided by Cambridge Cart, are provided from the edge of the park. The benefit is being organized by the Filling Station Restaurant. All proceeds from the day’s events will be donated to Honor Flight of the Quad Cities.

On Monday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m., the Monday movie will be about a French tightrope walker who crosses back and forth between the Twin Towers in New York City in 1974.

On Tuesday, June 14, at 10:30 a.m., the Summer Reading Story time Read for the Win will take place. At 6:30 p.m. that day, Guitar Jam — acoustic music will take place.

At 3:45 p.m., Wednesday, June 15, the Junior High Book Club discussion will be held.

In recognition of Midland States Bank’s sponsorship of the Princeton Public Library Cafe, the bank donated the book “Boomtown USA: The 7 Keys to Big Success in Small Towns” to the library. The book is written by Jack Schultz, chairman of the board of Midland States Bank.

SPRING VALLEY — The University of Illinois Extension will do a Wellness Wednesday Series at the Richard A. Mautino Memorial Library which is a free program to participants. Each class will be presented by Extension educator Susan Glassman, and recipe samples will be served. Learn some new ways to plan and prepare tasty, healthy summertime foods while keeping the kitchen cool.

Each class is from 4 to 5 p.m. The last class will be “Farmers Market Fresh; Cooking with Fresh Vegetables” on Wednesday, July 13.

LAMOILLE — LaMoille-Clarion Public Library’s summer reading program started June 1. Enjoy fun activities, great stories and snacks this summer at the library. Story hours will begin Tuesday, June 21, and end on July 26. Story times for prekindergarten through third graders will begin at 10:30 a.m., with fourth grade and older starting at 1:30 p.m.

Bring a friend and join the fun and earn prizes at the same time.

On Saturday, June 18, at 1 p.m., nationally-renowned storyteller Beth Horner will entertain with stories and music. This program is for all ages. There is limited seating, so those who plan on attending should let the library know.

Visit the library for coloring on Therapy Thursday which is an ongoing program at the library. Come and go as you like between 1 and 4 p.m. Materials will be furnished or people may bring their own.

The library will be participating in the Rebecca Caudill Book Choice Award for 2017.

This program is open to children in fourth through eighth grades. Twenty books have been nominated for the award, but each participating child has to read only three of the nominees to vote for their favorite. The Rebecca Caudill group will meet at the library for fun talks, games and snacks, ending with a pizza party and voting in February 2017.

The library is also taking part in choosing the Abraham Lincoln High School Book

Award. This award will be chosen from 20 nominees and voted on by participating high school students. The program will be conducted in the same manner as the Rebecca Caudill program. If interested in joining either of these groups, contact the library for a list of the nominated books.

DEPUE — On the second Tuesday of every month, the library hosts blood pressure and blood sugar screenings for free.

The screenings are administered by St. Margaret’s Health.

The Selby Township Library has announced the Summer Reading Program: “Read for the Win!” All kids ages 3 and up are invited to participate. The program will include activities like Ag in the Classroom, the Forest Park Nature Center, craft day and Library Olympics. Children will be encouraged to read books to earn points.

Children who earn enough points will receive prizes at the end of the program.

TISKILWA — Sign ups for the Summer Reading Program, “Read For The Win,” will take place during the week of June 6 at the library. The kick-off event will be held at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, June 9, at the library.

At 4 p.m. Tuesday, June 14, as part of the summer reading schedule, the library will have a class on creative watercoloring. Jan Lohaus will give tips to help patrons create a wonderful painting.

Every Thursday at 10:45 a.m., the library hosts a senior fitness class. Participants focus on balance, endurance, muscular strength, mental clarity and socialization.

Every Tuesday at 5:30 p.m., the library hosts a yoga class, where participants enjoy camaraderie with others and are challenged mentally and physically.

WALNUT — The library is collecting

empty inkjet cartridges for recycling.

Cartridges can be deposited in a collection bin located to the left inside the door to the library. Cartridges should be placed in a sandwich bag before being dropped off.

BUREAU — The Leepertown Township Public Library is open from 2 to 6 p.m.

OHIO — The library will be having its summer reading program this year again during the month of June. The program is held Wednesdays during the month of June at 2 p.m. There will be weekly activities and a month-long reading competition with prizes for the most books read.

On Wednesday, June 15 at 2 p.m., the library will welcome the Forest Park Nature Center for its program “Champions of Survival” as part of the library’s summer reading program.

LADD — Summer Reading Program registration is underway. The program continues through July 8.

Pre-school story times with Mrs. Dempsey will continue through the summer on Tuesdays at 10 a.m.

The library will also be sponsoring its new “Perpetual Programs.” These are activities that are prepared and available to be enjoyed at the library any time patrons stop in. No registration. No set time. Just stop in and enjoy an activity such as jigsaw puzzles, card games or a craft.

Special activities this summer will include game time, Bingo for Books, Selfie Scavenger Hunt, Minecraft Unplugged, and an ice cream party.

The library will also sponsor an Adult Summer Reading Program this year. In addition, an adult coloring club meets on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Wednesdays from 5 to 7 p.m., and an adult card club meets on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The next generation of farmers and ranchers Documentary to be shown at the Apollo Theater PRINCETON — The Bureau County Farm Bureau and its partners will provide the opportunity for everyone to see the film “Farmland” at the Apollo Theater in Princeton on Saturday, June 18. The screening will take place at 10 a.m. in conjunction with the Princeton Farmer’s Market.

Come see a unique view of the next generation’s family farm through the lens of Academy Award-winning filmmaker James Moll. “Farmland,” a feature length documentary, takes the viewer inside the world of farming for a first-hand glimpse into the lives of six young farmers and ranchers in their 20s. Through the personal stories of these farmers and ranchers, viewers learn about their high-risk/high-reward jobs and passion for a way of life that has been passed

down from generation to generation, yet continues to evolve.

Tickets are free but must be spoken for prior to the screening by contacting the Farm Bureau. A ticket will include the movie, pop and popcorn, a brief discussion with local farmers following the movie and more.

Produced by Moll’s Allentown Productions, “Farmland” received notable attention during its theatrical run, securing reviews in several national mediums and recognition in film festivals across the country, including Atlanta, Cleveland and Newport Beach, Calif. The film also earned a 92 percent audience rating on RottenTomatoes.com.

“Farmland” was made with the support of the U.S. Farmers and Ranchers Alliance.

Raffle tickets are available to help 4-H youth PRINCETON — Friends of Extension and 4-H who help to support outreach educational programs for University of Illinois Extension – Bureau County and its 4-H/Youth Development Program invites individuals to participate in a cash raffle fundraiser.

Four cash prizes — $2,500, $1,000, $500 and $250 — will be awarded on Friday, June 17. Tickets are a $50 donation; for a $100 you will receive three tickets. All monies raised from the event will be used to support the 4-H and Extension educational programs in Bureau County.

The winning tickets will be drawn at 2 p.m. June 17 at the Becker Professional Building, 850 Thompson St., Princeton.

Camping club will celebrate 30th anniversary The Bureau Valley Sams Chapter of the Good Sam Camping Club will celebrate its 30th anniversary in June.

The chapter was formed in 1986 with 12 charter members from Bureau County. There are currently 21 active and seven inactive members from Bureau and surrounding counties. The chapter camps once monthly, April through October, has a Christmas party in November and monthly luncheons January through March. The purpose of the chapter is to operate a social organization and to promote the use and enjoyment of recreational vehicles and outdoor fellowship among its members through trips and group activities.

“What a coincidence.

We’re learning about tikis today,” he said.

When Luke and I walked in class, there was writing on the board and pictures on the screen of tikis.

When Mr. Thars walked in the room, he started immediately with his lesson.

“On the last day we will learn about tikis,” he said.

“Tikis are wooden or stone carvings of a human figure, often a god the ones who are making the tiki believe in. They may be depicted holding spears, bows and swords. Some people are very superstitious about tikis, believing they are bad luck or even evil.”

The whole rest of the school day, all I could think about were those tikis.

I felt like their evil little eyes were staring at me, reminding me they were waiting for me.

At the end of the day, Luke, Lindy and I were

nearly trampled by classmates when trying to find each other as we exited the school. When we finally were safely outside, I thought I saw a totem pole with several faces, each showing a different emotion — there was one that was excited, one that was happy and one that was scared. A car drove in front of the totem pole and it was gone! Boy, I must need a summer break more than I thought because I may be starting to hallucinate.

Bedan Golf Classic SPRING VALLEY — The 20th annual Bruin Golf Classic sponsored by the St. Bede Academy Bedan Club is scheduled to be played Saturday June 11, at Spring Creek Golf Course. All proceeds will be used to purchase a defibrillator for the school as well as portable units for the athletic fields, complete with education for the staff.

The event includes 18 holes of golf, cart, cart rental, lunch, dinner, refreshments and a gift. Awards will be given in the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed divisions.

Check-in will be at 9 a.m. followed by brunch and a shotgun start at 10 A.M. utilizing a four-person scramble format.

The event is sponsored by the Breast Friends/Relay for Life team. Proceeds will benefit Relay for Life of Upper Illinois Valley.

Check-in will begin at 7 a.m. and the race starts at 8 a.m. The race begins and ends at Strouss Park. A pancake breakfast will follow the race.

SCGC Junior Golf

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Creek Golf Course is preparing for the 2016 junior golf season.

The junior league will be held Fridays beginning June 17, open to all IV golfers.

Ages 6-8 will play five shortened holes; ages 9-11 will play nine shortened holes; and ages 12-13 and 14-18 will play nine holes.

• The Lady Bruins Basketball Camp, under the direction of coach Tom McGunnigal, his coaching staff, and players will run June 13-16. There are sessions for grades 4-6, and grades 7-9.

In addition, McGunnigal will have a post camp June 14-15 for students entering grades 7-12 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. Cost is $40.
