Giving back to the community Bureau Valley District staff member Rick Wilkin works the grill Saturday at the Wyanet Locker. Every Saturday, the Wyanet Locker allows different non-profit community groups to host a barbecue luncheon. The standard menu includes ribeyes, pork chops, pork burgers, brats and hot dogs. Most times, the group hosting the cookout also sells chips, cold drinks and bake sale items. “They can sell anything they want,” said Wyanet Locker owner Scott Sabin.

“One hundred percent of the proceeds go to (the organization). I give them the meat at cost; they provide the workers; and we provide them the space to do it. We’ve been doing cookouts here for at least the last 15 years.” Cookouts run every Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sabin said the weekly cookout is a nice way for his business to give back to the community.

Timber Lake Playhouse begins 53rd season ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat’ opens this weekend MOUNT CARROLL — Timber Lake Playhouse, the professional summer theatre, in Mount Carroll, has opened its box office for ticket sales. The playhouse entertains more than 20,00 ticket buyers each year with a full lineup of shows and events through August.

Timber Lake Playhouse’s 53rd season opens with “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” from June 5-15. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s musical for the whole family has become an international hit everywhere it plays. “Les Miserables” will take the stage at Timber Lake Playhouse for the first time ever from July 31 to Aug. 10. Matthew Teague Miller spent several years as a performer in the first National Tour of “Les Miserables” and will return to direct this production.

White announces poetry contest Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White announces entry forms are available for the 10th annual Illinois Emerging Writers Competitions Gwendolyn Brooks Poetry Award.

“We created the Illinois Emerging Writers Competition to promote creative writing and provide a new outlet for talented writers,” White said. “Great

poems have the ability to enrich and enhance our lives, and I am looking forward to discovering talented new poets with this year’s competition.”

The competition is named in honor of the late Pulitzer Prize-winning Illinois Poet Laureate Gwendolyn Brooks and is co-sponsored by the Illinois Center for the Book and Kevin Stein,

who succeeded Brooks as Illinois Poet Laureate.

The competition is open to Illinois residents age 18 and older. Entries must be postmarked

by June 30. Cash prizes will be awarded for first ($100), second ($300) and third ($100) place and winning poems will be submitted for possible publication in the “Ninth Letter,” “RHINO,”

and “Quiddity” magazines and “Poetic License Press” publications. Winners will read their poems and receive their prizes at a ceremony later this year at the Illinois State Library in Springfield.

PEORIA — Tickets for the Don Williams concert at the Peoria Civic Center Theater at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 9 will go on sale at 10 a.m. June 6.

Don Williams came to be called the Gentle Giant in the decades he was a dominating country hit maker because of his unique blend of commanding presence and laid-back, easy style which has appealed to adults.

This man who loves the quiet home life can still fill an auditorium or stadium across the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe and Africa; his special role as an international ambassador for American country and pop music is ongoing, and his musical appeal, he has long since been astonished to

find, is about the same from the Central Time Zone to central Africa.

With hundreds of memorable songs in his repertoire, more than 50 of them major hits, whether contemplative ballads, affecting love songs or change-up rhythm numbers, have always been a core Don Williams strength and focus. Princeton Theatre Group announces summer camps PRINCETON — Learning Stage, the education committee of Princeton Theatre Group, has announced two summer programs which together will provide youth from grades K-12 the opportunity to experience and participate in live performances, while immersing themselves in the many aspects of bringing a show into production.

Both programs are being mounted in cooperation with Festival 56, which this summer marks its 11th season of bringing outstanding professional theater to local audiences.

Camp 56, to be held weekdays from June 23 through July 3, returns to mark its fourth consecutive year of providing a theater-based day camp for young people of primary and middle school age. Once again, camp director Lisa Gadomski will engage campers in a series of fun-filled activities including song, dance, make-up, costuming and visits to and with Festival sets, cast and crew. The culmination of their camping experience will be their on-stage appearances in the Festival’s production of “Oliver!”

The cost to enroll is $100 per camper. Financial assistance may be available to those who demonstrate financial need.

Theatre Boot Camp is the re-introduction, after several years’ absence, of a program for high-school

aged students with an interest in the dramatic arts. Running for six days beginning July 7, under the direction of Festival 56 co-founder Laura Brigham, the program will combine an opportunity for campers to hone their own performance skills while expanding their understanding of the dramatic arts through exposure to a variety of theatre professionals. The participants will attend three Festival 56 productions, appear in a Festival cabaret and stage their own showcase performance on the final day of camp.

The $250 fee includes theater tickets, daily lunches, Friday night dinner and a chaperoned overnight stay at the conclusion of the cabaret. A limited number of partial scholarships are available to those who demonstrate financial need.

Keith O’Neil will talk at the Living Works Suicide Walk on Saturday, June 7, in Princeton. He is a former NFL football player who played O’Neil for the Dallas Cowboys, Indianapolis Colts and New York Giants. During his professional career, he served as team captain and was a member of the Colts Super Bowl XLI Championship team. He is currently writing a book and speaking to audiences in the sports, faith and mental health communities. He is also the president and founder of the 4th and Forever Foundation which brings awareness to mental health and funds research for mental illness.

Look Good ... Feel Better program offered at Perry Memorial Hospital PRINCETON — The local American Cancer Society is sponsoring a Look Good ... Feel Better program from 10 a.m. to noon June 18 at the Perry Memorial Hospital White Oak Classroom.

The program is free and teaches self care techniques to female cancer patients in active treatment to help them combat the appearance-related side effects of cancer treatment. This program is offered nationwide in cancer centers, hospitals and other community settings. Trained volunteer cosmetologists teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.

The free cosmetic kits provided at the sessions are available in light, medium, dark and extra dark shades to enhance all complexion types.

Women also learn ways to disguise hair loss with wigs, scarves and other accessories. Participants will also learn about the local wig bank, how to care for a wig and tips for comfort while wearing a wig.

Thursday, June 12, Friends of the Library Book Club will meet at 4 p.m. and discuss “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd. Everyone is invited to join this group.

Also at Princeton Public Library, the staff is preparing for the 2014 summer reading program Paws to Read. They would like to feature some famous canines and felines from the Princeton area — namely, the dog and cat sculptures that were created in 2008 when Friends of Strays sponsored a public art fundraiser call “Art…Well Groomed.”

Many would love to have another look at these oneof-a-kind pieces, and the library is putting out a call to anyone in possession of one of the “well groomed” animals. The library would like to display these at the library this summer from June to August.

SPRING VALLEY — Spring Valley resident Victor Croasdale has changed his model displays to World War II-themed, with a countdown to D-Day. Friday, June 6, he will be at the library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. to discuss the events leading up to and including D-Day to commemorate the 70th anniversary.

The Young Rembrandts will again offer two drawing classes. On June 10, the first class is for 4-5 year olds at 9:30-10:15 a.m., and the second class is for 6-12 year olds

SHEFFIELD — The Sheffield Public Library is participating in the eRead Illinois Program designed to increase access to e-books across Illinois.

The initial funding for the program was provided by a grant from Secretary of State and State Librarian Jesse White through the Illinois State Library.

Sheffield library patrons with a library card can download the platform on a variety of devices including iPad, iPhone, Android, Windows, NOOK and Sony Reader devices, Kindle Fire, and many more. LADD — Registrations are now being accepted for the Ladd Public Library’s summer reading program. This years theme is Paws to Read. The program will feature stories, craft projects, various games, activities and prizes. Patrons will meet at the library each Monday beginning June 16 and concluding on July 21. In addition to the regular story time programs, the library will also have a few special events.

Scheduling for the regular programs is as follows: Children entering prekindergarten or kindergarten will meet at 10 a.m.; children entering first through third grades will meet at 11 a.m.; and children entering fourth through sixth grades will meet at 1 p.m.

Special events include: Game time at 1 p.m. June 27. Check back for future events.

June 4-7. The exhibit “Journey to Tomorrow” is a premier traveling exhibit on loan from the John Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to the exhibit, several additional components will be on display inside the library.

PERU — Tuesday, June 17, the Peru Public Library will host Rachael Mullen from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. An active genealogist for over 30 years, Mullen is an expert in English research. Presenting workshops since 1986 on English parish records, wills and basic English research, Mullen has presented at the Newberry Library and the Illinois State Genealogical Society. While aimed at the beginner, more experienced genealogists will find Mullen’s presentation an energizing boost to research. NASA space exhibit opens at LaSalle Library LASALLE – The LaSalle Public Library will host Journey to Tomorrow, a premier NASA traveling exhibit which will engage visitors in the history, technology and challenges of air and space exploration from June 4-7. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day.

Journey to Tomorrow is a 53-foot trailer transformed into an interactive informal learning environment, outfitted with user-friendly computer kiosk displays and hands-on workstations which communicate fascinating discoveries and complex concepts in easy-to-understand and memorable ways. The entire exhibit and parking is accessible for persons using wheelchairs.

Visitors are invited to explore at their own pace.

After viewing a video, guests will explore interactive kiosks like Improving Today’s Flight, which looks at the technologies of space flight. NASA Home and City, an exhibit which highlights spinoff products, created from NASA’s research programs, which improve our quality of life.

Sci-Fi vs. Science Fact lets visitors test their knowledge of space travel and the search for extraterrestrial life, while Brain Bites answers common questions about air and space travel. Guests work with a lunar landing simulator, and explore the earth, sun and solar system via Dynamic Planet. Additional workstations include glovebox activities, a planetary gravity demonstrator and a solar system scale where visitors can find

out how much they would weigh on the moon and on each of the planets. Journey to Tomorrow is staffed

by NASA scientists who are available to provide additional information.

Models of various space vehicles, rockets and launch systems extend the learning into three dimensions. The ultimate artifact is a real moon rock returned from one of the Apollo lunar landing missions.

Visitors can also examine an inflatable display of the Mars rover and, using X-Box technology, try their hands at landing the Curiosity Rover on Mars.

The Journey to Tomorrow exhibits are part of the LaSalle Public Library’s summer reading program, Space for Curiosity. Funding for Journey to Tomorrow has been provided by the Alwin C. Carus Trust. Accommodations for NASA personnel have been donated in-part by Days Inn, Oglesby. Additional parking areas have been made available by Trinity Catholic Academy and Kaskaskia Holdings.

MCNABB — Along Illinois Route 89 south of Spring Valley lies the little village of McNabb. If you move a little way west down Main Street, you’ll find Moreno’s on Main at 410 W. Main St. Prepare for some good food and a few new friends.

Linda Moreno opened Moreno’s 11 years ago after owning Moreno’s Town Club tavern in Gran-

ville for 30 years. Homecooked meals are always on the menu, and the cozy dining room feels like Grandma’s kitchen table.

“I call this the ‘Home of Comfort Food’ because everything here is homemade,” Moreno said. “We make our cole slaw fresh each morning. Our homemade pork tenderloin isn’t made until you order it.

“We have different things everyday. We have certain things on certain days, but some things are

“They’re things I’ve picked up through the years of being in business,” she said. “You add something; you take it away. It’s kind of like an artist, you add things that look better. Here, it’s so it’ll taste a bit better.”

In addition to her meals, Moreno also serves up what she likes to call “sinful” desserts. Homemade bread pudding is one of her specialties, but the house favorite is Fudge Overboard, a homemade fudge brownie topped with ice cream and homemade fudge topping and chopped pecans.

“We open at 5 a.m. everyday, and the farmers will come and figure out what’s happening for the day. Nobody usually eats alone in here,” Moreno said. “Everybody will come to this table or that.

If it’s someone we know, it’ll be, ‘Come over and sit down here.’ People like that. It’s kind of a homeytype place.”

Moreno’s ability to make everyone feel like they’re at home doesn’t stop at good food and hospitality.

Pour into 13-by-9-inch pan. Refrigerate 3 hours or until firm. Cut gelatin into 1/2inch cubes. Place in 3 1/2-quart serving bowl. Cover with layer of cake cubes, half of the whipped topping and the strawberries. Top with remaining whipped topping. Refrigerate at least 1 hour before serving. Store leftovers in refrigerator.

Three Layer Strawberry Pretzel Charm 3 tablespoons sugar 3 cups coarsely crushed pretzels 12 tablespoons margarine, melted 1 8-ounce package cream cheese, softened 1 8-ounce carton whipped topping 2 cups miniature marshmallows 2 cups powdered sugar, sifted 1 6-ounce package strawberry gelatin 2 1/2 cups boiling water 1 16-ounce package frozen strawberries Combine sugar, pretzels and margarine.

Press into 9-by-13-inch baking pan. Bake at 350° for 15 minutes. Cool. Combine cream cheese, whipped topping, marshmallows and powdered sugar; spread over pretzel crust and chill. Dissolve gelatin in boiling water. Stir in frozen strawberries and pour over cream cheese mixture.

Refrigerate and chill until set.

Frozen Berry Treats 1 cup boiling water 1 package (4 serving size) orange flavor gelatin 6 ounces (1/2 can) frozen lemonade concentrate (do not thaw) 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed, divided 2 cups mixed berries (blueberries, raspberries and coarsely chopped strawberries) Stir boiling water into dry gelatin mix in medium bowl at least 2 minutes until gelatin is completely dissolved. Stir in lemonade concentrate. Refrigerate 30 minutes or until slightly thickened (consistency of unbeaten egg whites). Add half of the whipped topping, stir with wire whisk until well blended. Refrigerate 5 minutes or until thickened. Gently stir in berries.

Spoon into 16 paper lined 2 1/2-inch muffin cups. Freeze 4 hours or until firm. To serve, remove and discard paper liners.

Top desserts with remaining whipped topping. Store leftovers in freezer.

Frozen Raspberry Shortcake Squares 1 pint (2 cups) frozen raspberry nonfat yogurt, softened 1 package (4 serving size) Jell-O brand Raspberry flavor gelatin 1 8-ounce tub Cool Whip whipped topping, thawed 1 10.75-ounce package pound cake, cubed Beat yogurt and dry gelatin mix in large bowl with wire whisk until well blended.

Gently stir in whipped topping. Add cake cubes, mix lightly. Spoon into an 8-inch square pan. Freeze 3 hours or until firm.

Cut into 12 squares to serve. Store leftovers in freezer.

Cranberry Gelatin Salad 1 pound fresh cranberries 2 cups ground apples 1 1/2 cups sugar 1 teaspoon lemon juice 1 6-ounce package raspberry gelatin 1/2 cup chopped walnuts 1/2 cup chopped celery Grind cranberries and apples separately in food grinder. Combine cranberries, apples, sugar and lemon juice and let stand several hours, stirring occasionally. Prepare gelatin according to package directions. When cooled, but not set, stir in fruit mixture, walnuts and celery. Pour into serving dish and refrigerate until set.

How to say goodbye to work worries while on vacation (BPT) — Summer has just begun and that longawaited vacation is on the horizon. Unfortunately, it can quickly pass you by and before you know it, that precious vacation time has been wasted due to inadequate trip planning or a basic inability to relax.

Twenty-three percent of Americans take no vacation time at all, according to a report from the Center for Economic and Policy Research. With employees skipping out on vacation days every year, the bigger question remains as to why this continues to happen, and what happens when employees actually take that time off? More importantly, how can an individual enjoy a vacation without being completely disconnected from work?

First off, it’s important

to understand the value of taking time off work. “A well-placed vacation can help break the cycle of everyday workplace-related stress,” says Dr. Joffrey Suprina, dean of the College of Behavioral Sciences at Argosy University. “Chronic stress takes a toll on our body’s health, disrupting its ability to resist infection, maintain vital functions and even avoid injury.

A new survey from Glassdoor found that 61 percent

of employees admitted to doing some work while on vacation. In a connected world of smartphones, iPads and Wi-Fi, that might not seem like a big deal.

It’s easy to work remotely.

However, many people aren’t getting the most of their vacation. Checking an email can easily lead to jumping on a project, which has potential to take up hours of your valuable vacation time.

“Taking time off has a positive effect on employee happiness and productivity, however many people are simply afraid to walk away from their work even for a few days,” says Dr. Carlos Tasso E. De Aquino, assistant dean of the Graduate School of Business and Management at Argosy University. “With globalization and increas-

ing competition, the workforce feels threatened to lose their jobs to people anywhere in the world, so they develop this ‘addiction’ and never stop working,” adds Aquino.

So before you leave the office for vacation, assign a person to help others regarding your normal responsibilities and let everybody clearly know who this person is — including them in an automatic email reply and voice mail.

“Consider a time blocking strategy, where you choose a small block of time to catch up on work.

Let your coworkers know that this is the only time you’ll be responding to emails, calls and other work needs. By doing this you’ll be in control of your responsibilities, setting employee expectations, and alleviating some of the stress that comes from having to constantly check in,” says Suprina.

Another good idea is to train your stand-in coworker well in advance. Consider having your employees partner up with somebody who understands their job.

When their counterpart goes on vacation, only they can contact each other if

something comes up. This means that all the attempts to access the vacationing employee have to go through their “gatekeeper” who can judge just how important it actually is to contact that employee.

Vacations give you a chance to unwind, enjoy life, and to keep your worklife balance from swinging too far toward work. They allow you to take a step back from your normal, stressful routine and enjoy a bit of rest and relaxation.

So go ahead this summer and take a few days off.

Go Fish ... it’s free in Illinois June 6-9 The annual Illinois Free Fishing Days celebration is slated for June 6–9. Free Fishing Days is a four-day celebration of fishing in Illinois in which anglers can fish without purchasing a fishing license, salmon stamp or inland trout stamp.

A fishing trip is much more than just going to catch fish. The excitement of getting the boat ready, packing a lunch, going over the checklist, picking out lures for the tackle box, buying worms, etc., is all part of the fun. The fishing experience teaches a child about patience, makes them aware of the sights and sounds of the outdoors, and provides a great sense of accomplishment from baiting a hook to catching that first fish. We all need to take the time to bring our children outside and teach them about taking ownership in caring for the natural environment. Help our Illinois youth get excited about fishing—if you can pass on your knowledge, you will be continuing a great tradition of exploring Illinois lakes and rivers.

Many fishing related accidents can be avoided with some forethought. Act on the side of caution, watch over children diligently, and teach by example.

• Young children should always fish with an adult.

• When in a boat or canoe, ALWAYS wear a life jacket.

• If weather turns stormy, be cautious and seek shelter or end your trip early. If you hear thunder, it is time to get off the water!

• Protect young eyes and skin on sunny days. The sun reflects off the water surface, and it can be easy to get a sunburn or damage eyes. Always have young anglers wear a hat, sunscreen, and sunglasses.

• Those hooks are sharp! Teach children to always be aware of where their hook is and not to let it get near anyone else. Set good rules about looking around before anyone casts.

• It is a smart practice to use barbless hooks or pinch down the barbs on your own hooks.

• Be very careful of Poison Ivy. This often grows along disturbed areas around boat ramps or in the woods. If you go on a hike, stay on the trail.

Free Fishing Days in Illinois • June 6-9 Conservation When/where to go?

Always teach and practice the Anglers’ Code of Ethics. Our lakes and rivers belong to everyone and we all must do our part to preserve them for future generations.

• Children and adult alike should keep only what you will eat and never wastefully discard any fish. For those fish you want to release, teach about best angling practices from our Catch-and-Release Guidelines.

• It is everyone’s responsibility to protect the outdoors. Do not throw gum wrappers, sandwich wrappers, soda cans, bait containers or any other trash in the water. Pack your trash out or dispose of it in a park garbage can.

• Teach kids that fishhooks and line can snag and kill fish, birds, turtles, small mammals and frogs when thrown into the water. These should be discarded in appropriate trash containers.

• Knowing the size and number of fish it is legal to keep is important for all.

Talking about regulations with your child provides a great opportunity to discuss why these are necessary and how they can help keep fish populations healthy.

PCA to host 5K Eagle Run/Walk PRINCETON — Princeton Christian Academy will host its inaugural 5K Eagle Run/Walk at 8 a.m. June 14, starting and finishing at Zearing Park in Princeton.

The purpose of the race is to raise needed funds for the school to purchase new bleachers for the PCA gymnasium. The race is open to people of all ages who will compete in several different age categories for medals. Those who prefer to walk are encouraged to participate in a non-competitive way. This is a family friendly event for all ages. Little ones who cannot run/ walk a 5K distance can ride along in a stroller for free.

Several food vendors, a band and other exhibits will be set up at Zearing Park for the convenience and entertainment of the participants and supporters of the race.

Those interested in running or walking in the Eagle 5K may register online at eaglerun5k.net or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/eaglerun5k. Prizes will be awarded for best times in each category and for overall winners; everyone who registers will get a T-shirt.

Morning trips are best as the fish usually bite better and it is not too hot. A good place to teach a beginner is from a dock.

This provides enough room to show kids how to put their worm on a hook, teach them proper casting, and observe other anglers. Sunfish often hang out around docks, making this a great way to view swimming fish and observe how fish are attracted to a lure.

I caught a fish! Now what?

In the excitement of catching a fish, here are some basic guidelines for the young angler: • Landing a fish can take some practice.

Teach the skill of “setting the hook” with one sharp pull up on the rod to force the hook into the fish’s mouth.

• Teach kids to keep the line tight and the rod tip up and don’t reel in the fish too quickly.

• It is tough for beginner anglers to know how to take a fish off the hook.

Encourage kids to closely observe and help out until they feel they are ready to handle a fish and not get poked by spines.

• Before handling a fish, teach the importance of getting your hands wet.

This prevents rubbing off the protective slime coating that fish have to prevent infection.

• What kind of fish is it? Point out colors, how to count spines, basic shapes, and other features that can teach kids about the differences of fish species. Download our Common Sport Fish Guide and refer to our Fish Species A-Z webpage.

• Because most fish have sharp spines that can poke your hand, always handle the fish carefully but firmly.

• If the hook is in too deep, it is best to cut the line about an inch from the fish’s mouth and let the fish go. Explain that many times the fish will get rid of the hook on its own and it is best to leave it in rather than cause internal damage trying to get it out.

Lady Panthers Golf Camp MCNABB — Putnam County High School Lady Panthers golf team will be hosting a minicamp from 6 to 7:30 p.m. June 9-11 at Edgewood Golf Club.

The camp is open to all eighth-grade girls as well as those who will be attending PCHS in the fall of 2014. There is no cost for the camp, but those who wish to attend must pre-register by calling head coach Eric Ciucci at 815-8669375.

St. Bede camps

St. Bede Academy is offering a variety of summer camps. For more information, call 815-2233140. Here’s a rundown: Wrestling Camp: Plan to wrestle, swim, play football, and wrestle for this 3 day camp.

Wrestling instruction covers physical and mental preparation, takedowns, escapes, and pinning combinations. Headgear and wrestling shoes are recommended but not required.

Illinois Valley Scene Snacks will be provided. New wrestlers welcome.

The camp runs June 19-21 and is open to students entering grades 2-8. Cost: is $50.

Swimming Camp: Coach Joan Jobst will offer camp time for competitive, beginners and intermediates from June 22 through July 3. Cost is $55 per swimmer Cheer Camp: New Academy cheerleading coach, Danielle Saletzki, will have sessions for grades K-4 and 5-8 on June 19-20 with a special performance for parents at 10 a.m.

June 21. Cost is $30 Speed, Agility and Quickness Camp: Under the direction of track coach Mike Skoflanc, this amp is designed to introduce to young athletes the training methods which will enhance their speed, agility and quickness. It will be held June 18-21. Cost is $45.

Lady Bruins Basketball Camp: The camp will emphasize the fun in playing as a team and the challenge of competition through games making it enjoyable for all groups. There will be sessions for grades 4-6 and grades 7-9. Cost is $50.

Girls’ Basketball Post Camp: Lady Bruins’ assistant coach, Stef Kaufmann will teach the

skills needed for all post players to play at a high level. Skills taught will range from basic post positioning to making the move to the basket to become better for your team next season. It is open to girls entering grades 7-12 on June 11-12.

Cost is $35.

Boys Basketball Camp: Under the guidance of head basketball coach Mike Kilmartin, his staff and players, the week long camp will consist of station drills, daily skill challenges, and individual instruction. The team game with competitions and scrimmages will also be a part of the instruction.

The camp is for boys entering grades 4-6 and 7-9. Cost is $45.

Volleyball Camp: Campers will receive instruction on all skills of the game including hitting, serving, blocking, and setting from our volleyball coach, Dawn Williams, and the current members of the volleyball team.

The camp is for girls entering grades 4-9, running June 23-27. Cost is$45 Lady Bruins Softball Camp: Learn basic hitting, fielding, and base running skills from Mike Urbanski, The camp meets from June 16-19 for girls entering grades 4-9. Cost is $45.

Tony Bonnell Memorial MENDOTA — The 12th annual Tony Bonnell Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Saturday, June 14 at Mendota Golf Club. The event is sponsored by the “Team Thrive” team of the Relay for Life of Bureau County in memory of team member, Tony Bonnell, who died in 2002 from kidney cancer. All proceeds from the event benefit the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Bureau County.

Open tee times are available from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The registration fee is $15 for club members and $40 for non-club members and includes 18 holes of golf with cart, refreshments on the course, games, snacks, and prizes. A chicken dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. at a cost of $8.

Bruin Golf Classic

SPRING VALLEY — The 18th annual Bruin Golf Classic sponsored by the St. Bede Academy Bedan Club will be held June 14 at Spring Creek Golf Course. All proceeds will be used to support the mission of St. Bede Abby and Academy.

The event includes 18 holes of golf,

cart, cart rental, lunch, dinner, refreshments and a gift. Cost is $80 payable by June 7. Check-in will be at 9 a.m. followed by brunch and a shotgun start at 10 a.m. with a four-person scramble.

PMH Foundation scramble PRINCETON — The Perry Memorial Hospital Foundation annual golf scramble will be held on Friday, June 20 at Chapel Hill Golf Club in Princeton. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. with a shotgun start at noon A prime rib dinner will be served at approximately 5 p.m. at the golf club. The cost for golfing is $90 per person which includes green fees, cart, gift for each golfer and dinner. First-, second- and third-place winners in each flight will receive free rounds of golf at various golf courses and each participant will receive a door prize.
