Walking for the Relay Putnam County Junior High School students were out in force and in great spirits during last week’s slightly damp Walk-aThon. The students were walking in support of the upcoming Marshall-Putnam counties Relay for Life which will be held Saturday, June 13, from 4 to 10 p.m. at Central Park, 426 E. Park Row St. in Henry. This year’s theme is the tropical “Re-lei for Life” and will feature a hog roast dinner along with many other activities. According to the American Cancer Society’s website, the Relay for Life event, which is held in thousands of cities around the world, was originally created in May 1985, when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., ultimately raising $27,000 to help the American Cancer Society fight the nation’s biggest health concern — cancer. A year later, 340 supporters joined the overnight event. Since those first steps, the Relay For Life movement has grown into a worldwide phenomenon, raising nearly $5 billion to fight cancer.” The public is encouraged to participate and attend the Marshall-Putnam counties Relay for Life.
